@NathanMerrill, @El'endiaStarman wow, Soulward has only placed #193 in the game jam

Sorry, I went into the wrong chatroom.

@MartinEnder yeah, I'm pretty surprised by that score.
Also, people are terrible at scoring. Like, we're still in the 4s by that time?
Too many people are giving 5s
I didn't give it all 5s, and I rated it the highest
I wonder if game jams are becoming manipulated by social media
I know for a fact that the top entry (Gooey Castle) was asking for reviews in comments on many games
Absolutely. And people are probably doing the ol' "Is it absolute shit? 1, is it actually a game? 3, Do I like it? 5"
oh man, and it only has 3 comments on it. This definitely feel abused
I think if I were itch.io, I'd not allow new accounts to vote.
Or at least, allow Game Jams to set that as an option
@NathanMerrill I'm not sure, the amount of ratings seems to have very little to do with the final ranking.
There's a lot of games in the top 100 with only a few ratings.
Right. I don't think that's an accident.
You have a lot more variance with fewer ratings
and if you convince just a couple of people to vote high, you're more likely to get top spot
Yeah, I guess. But I feel like you run the risk of convincing more people to rate honestly in the process.
14:18
possibly :)
So I think the best you could do to the game the system is not to promote the game but just let your mum rate it.
I didn't look, is it simply ranked by vote average? E.g. 1 10/10 > 10 9.9/10?
I'm not entirely sure. I haven't seen any games very high up with less than 10 ratings.
@Veskah basically. They do rank games with lower amounts of votes lower
Might have a minimum or weight math applied
14:19
but I'm not sure what the "minimum" number of votes is. It seems really low
If you look at the bottom games, you can see that their score has been adjusted
but games with just 10 votes didn't get adjusted at all
Well, we ended up with an average score very close to 4 and placed #326 out of the 2647, which i'm actually quite happy with for my first successful game jam. I also got four friends to play it on a big projector screen yesterday which was very fun to watch. :D
oh yeah, I think the median was 10 votes IIRC
I have no clue where I read that though
Top 13% ain't too bad
oh, at the top of the page
okay, so basically you want the median amount of ratings and make sure they're good, but not any more. yeah, I guess the ranking system could use some work.
That sounds quite decent. The factors of 10 and 2 seem kinda random (and 10 seems definitely too much for the amount of ratings anyone can reasonably get in a game jam), but the overall idea looks solid.
the accuracy should probably top out around 50-100 ratings for a game jam
the new (non-zachlike) Zachtronics game will be released is just over two hours
really curious how well they'll do outside their comfort zone :)
14:47
@MartinEnder This game jam sucks! *flips table*
@NathanMerrill That was a neat read.
Has anyone played Cell Lab? (Android game.)
Someone brought it up on the zachlike Discord, and it seems really neat so far.
@NathanMerrill Woah, oneshot ranked super high on that
That's cool
@MartinEnder Cell lab evolution sandbox?
that's the one
Or "voltaic cell lab"
Just downloaded it
@DJMcMayhem yeah. Many of my favorite games are rated high, giving me confidence that it actually works
15:02
grrrrr, Hollow Knight one spot below Cuphead :D
And right above Baba Is You
@MartinEnder and a surprisingly even number of reviews
Looks like page 3 has most of my favourite games :D
Dust on spot 92 is kinda ridiculous though
Oh wow, even Opus Magnum is on that list
It's pretty fascinating to me that three of the top four games are puzzle(ish) games.
Do you guys recommend Witcher 3? I've started it, and had trouble getting through it
Haven't played it yet. I wanted to play the entire trilogy but wanted to switch to something else 10 hours into Witcher 2.
Not even because it was bad or uninteresting, but after spending 45 hours on The Witcher 1, I just felt like playing something else for a change.
15:29
Have you platform junkies seen Exception yet? Releasing tomorrow.
I raise exception to that term
:^)
@AdmBorkBork Hadn't heard about it before. It looks really fancy, but I wonder how readable the gameplay will actually be with all those crazy level transformations.
Also, SM64 ABC (A-Button Challenge) rerouted to have a valid Ticktock Clock route (it was previously only individually valid because 5 of the stars needed a Preset Held Object Last Position value whereas you can only set it 3 times without pressing A additional times).
16:00
@MartinEnder Yeah, same. It certainly visually looks interesting, but I'm curious how it plays out.
Eliza is out now

Finally got a win on Defect. It was a sweeeet setup, with inserter and an innate apotheosis, and healing 2HP each time I use a power
