Well the short and skinny is that you mine and you craft

I actually have one question about it: How does anybody play that game without a wiki

because crafting requires putting materials in very specific spots

Not optimally, that's for sure

@NathanMerrill Most recipes make a kind of sense, once you get used to the mechanics of it. For example, a bowl is three wood in a V shape. It's the more esoteric things that are harder to discern, like making a book. There also exists an in-game recipe book that gets slowly filled out as you play.

@AdmBorkBork (1): You don't know what items even exist in the game, and (2): Hindsight is 20/20; Figuring out a recipe is much harder than discerning it after you know the recipe.

I didn't know they had a recipe book, so that's good. I suspect there are many recipe-book-less recipes though :)

Not quite. Meaning that once you discover an item in-game (let's say, diamond), then the recipe book will show you how to craft diamond tools, for example.

Right, the recipe book solves both of my complaints.

Everything craftable in game should show in the recipe book, provided you have some of the ingredients.

both DS and Terraria have an equivalent solution

Tbf, don't starve crafting is the easiest of the three, but crockpot recipes are the exception

Don't Starve will auto show you recipes when you are near the appropriate station.

You're totally right about crockpot

that's why I never use it :)

And Terraria has the guide

But Terraria is extremely specific about anything other than the most basic of crafting

Yeah, but terraria doesn't need as much crafting.

it focuses way more on loot drops

Literally my bed every time is a demon bed

@NathanMerrill Also in that case you're missing out. It makes food values way higher, and also let's you make monster meat safe. I like farming spiders

@DJMcMayhem I like farming. And bird traps. The problem is seeds :)

yeah. I agree. Building a house requires a wiki.

I just never cared for that part of the game.

The most advanced I'd get was to use a different type of wood for each NPC house

It's not the most fun part, but it's worth it for the NPCs

Also "wall" can mean two completely different things which doesn't help

@NathanMerrill It's been a while since I've played, but the other part that requires the wiki is the section of the game (which is like half of it in terms of progression) between hardmode and moonlord-tier bosses (cultist/pillars/moonlord). That's a lot of bosses that are hard to summon and have to be fought in order

(I think that's 5 bosses? 3 mechanical, plantera, golem)

what do you mean? The mechanical bosses will show up by themselves, plantera is like Queen Bee (kill the block), and there's no way you don't know what the temple key is for, right?

yeah, plantera does require you to explore the jungle, but that's true of pretty much all bosses

Hmm. I do remember relying on the wiki a lot in that stage of the game, but that's probably because I was looking for specific upgrades that required the bosses first

I mean, I agree. I started depending on it as well, but I think a lot of that is because it saves time.

rather than exploring all of the possible items, you just go to the wiki to see what the next big armor upgrade is

that's the point.

But as long as there is a discovery mechanism within the game (outside of try every possibility), that's fine by me

So, unlike point-and-click adventure games.
