ViacomCBS Brands To Go Dark As Tribute To George Floyd deadline.com/2020/05/…

1:39 AM
Pro tip of the day: do not hand people to the police at the anti police brutality protest thanks
Meanwhile, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department:

2:01 AM
I have been reminded that this Sheriff lost the primary 70-30 get owned

2:18 AM
I resemble this:

2:45 AM
@Unionhawk It's a minor thing but I remain extremely annoyed that when on the flag it is a thick blue line

@TimStone it's also technically against flag code but like
What are they going to do arrest the sheriff

3:09 AM
Anyone else watching MSNBC?

@Jolenealaska Nope
Why?

Just beat the final boss of Bioshock
And then it froze :(

@Wipqozn just a crazy moment in DC, just maybe two blocks from the White House.

No I'm just following local journalists
atm

The correspondent used some profanity when he was hit by a rubber bullet or something.
So the anchor told him to stop talking.
It would have been pretty funny had the circumstances not been so fucking awful.

Seeing many reports of folks who did war correspondence in the past getting shot at for the first time by police in the past few days
@TimStone NYPD's budget is nearly 6 billion dollars

For that kind of cash DeBlasio could defund them, stop getting owned, and corruptly build a private tunnel directly to the gym

it'd be less embarrassing than giving a speech like "actually it was good that the police did a hit and run" and then the sheriff's union posts like "I should be allowed to shoot bill deblasio"

Partially relatedly guess who might be getting into a fight over police "unions" it's meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee come at me national
(I wrote a bylaws amendment to exclude law enforcement and so-called police union organizers from our local but I'm pretty sure the second part is not allowed yet sooooooo)

(it's essentially the IWW rule plus the police union bit, no individuals sworn badged and armable by the government to enforce the law, no prison guards regardless of who pays them, and no union orgnizers that represent any individuals belonging to the aforementioned groups)

"Physical condition: Apparently Normal"
Apparently they've managed to set the White House guardhouse on fire
Although I think looking at the map that building is actually on the far side of Lafayette Square

oh no that notification
> Something about Biden visiting a Delaware protest idk I dismissed all to quick
no thanks

I think he's just supposed to have a virtual town hall with Wilmington city officials tomorrow

author of 1994 crime bill etc etc I'm tired you write the rest of the post
I don't get paid enough for this

3:44 AM
> Delaware State Rep. Mike Smith (R-Newark), via a Facebook video, said there was "intelligence out there that there could be some incidents similar to what happened in Wilmington and other areas."
lol, this asshole
a) there wasn't
b) the median household income of the area he was talking about is over $100k
So he knew what he was doing

what, happened in wilmington? The same shit as everywhere?

intelligence suggests that people in more than one city are unhappy about a guy getting murdered by a cop
they may all be paid since as we all know people can't just act on their own wills

The mall was supposed to open tomorrow but they'll be delaying now because while it was totally cool if my fiancee got COVID, can't risk the tiniest chance of looting

4:04 AM
jk they counted the tigers and they're all there

4:24 AM
Cops took a knee with protesters in Oakland just now. Good moment.

Another good moment!

Does the government actually waste money maintaining these?
I’d assume so?

kpop fans overwhelmed Dallas PD's snitch app with fancams until they had to take it down

8 hours later…
12:24 PM
@Stormblessed Confederate monuments? Absolutely
A large portion of Americans love their tributes to slavery monuments

Footage from around the whitehouse last night: reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/guek6f/…
Officer who pushed over a kneeling girl gets confronted by another officer reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/gubleh/…

@Unionhawk Oh apparently he did walk around talking to people in Wilmington

lol fucking amazing
some streamer tried to get protesters to flip over a truck, and they called him out for being a piece of shit, and then he ran reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/guajeu/…
Cop dropping off water for protesters reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/gu968x/…
You know, it's amazing how much more receptive to police protesters are when the cops aren't trying to shoot or choke them...
I'm sure that's not an indication of anything. NOPE.
The Terminator talking about how there's "No Two Sides to Bigotry" reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/guiddj/lets_terminate_hate

@Wipqozn He's had some really good ones these past couple of days

@MBraedley Yup. Him and Bruce are always greatr.

Is he capable of not editorializing it?

@MBraedley I really liked his cartoons, but I had to unfollow him during my politics account purge

Yeah, makes sense

2:09 PM
So it looks like cell jammers are being deployed in various locations
Kind of wish I had a HAM license right about now lol

> To better secure your personal information, the FCC no longer displays your Password or Personal Security Answer.
did... the FCC display your password in plaintext upon registration in the past
God this website has some great UX lol
ok so a GMRS license is $70 for 10 years... hmm
If I'm declared a terrorist does that make me eligible for CIA money to pay for this

2:35 PM
Just to see the other side...
Guy getting laughed at by rioters after they burned down his small business reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/gu7heh/…
Folks saying it don't matter since he's got insurance, probably, but uh, I don't think people realize how much insurance companies will try to screw over anyone that isn't a big business
Insurance companies aren't your friends. IF you don't got expensive lawyers, they'll try to fuck you over as much as possible. Small businesses included.

I mean, they'd have no standing to deny this claim
what are they going to do, try and cite the war exclusion?

Different angle of a video from yesterday of police just randomnly breaking into some car attacking people: reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/gu8pa8/this_is_fucked_up
@Unionhawk Mostly they can try to delay, underpay, et cetera

I do wonder if the past few days is going to be considered catastrophic loss lol

oh sounds like they got fired: ajc.com/news/breaking-news/…

(CAT loss is reported in another bucket, to distinguish "town hit by tornado" from "restaurant has grease fire")

2:39 PM
@TimStone anything really important?
Like, from an outsider perspective, I can't tell what most of those cases are about

More examples of protesters and cops getting along reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/gucy1d/…
Again, I don't know what the difference is between the examples when protesters hate cops and when they don't....hmmm..
Certainly has nothing to do with the behaviour of the police officers. Nah.
NAAAAAAAH

Most of these cases I've seen they just kind of
grab a photo and then gear back up

@Unionhawk lol yeah depends on the cop. For me it's all about highlighting how if the cops weren't, you know, being terrible then things wouldn't be so bad.
When cops arne't like, abusing protesters, then the protesters have no problem with the cops.,
aka cops stop being fucking terrible, and we wouldn't be in this situation right now

@Nzall They skipped the more contentious rulings, the most well known one in this lot was probably the case about whether Puerto Rico's oversight board selection was constitutional and the answer was yes

These protests are already having a positive impact, though, since quite a few cops have been fired for excessive force during the protests (like above).
Hopefully this leads to this becoming common practice going forward.

2:44 PM
@TimStone I like all the 7-2 with Alito and Thomas dissent lol

more skyhigh footage of crowds reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/gu4vi4/…
Chicago

Officers harassing more reporters reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/guib8q/…
You know, if you're so concerned about being recorded, probably a sign you're doing bad...
@Unionhawk Good, good
Also I'm sure it'll be depressing lol but good

Ave
@Wipqozn acab

@Ave All Cats Are Beautiful? I agree!

Ave
agreed

9Actually right now my younger cat is being a mschief maker
He almost posted a zoom link here for my comany wide meeting. What a guy. WHAT A GUY.
Also he's not got a taste for Mil-k+
All those typos are becasue of him
not that one though

Also DC has imposed another curfew but also has an election open until after the curfew so hmmm 🤔
Oh good now he's talked to Putin, who I'm sure gave him sane advice about dealing with protests

4:14 PM
> MORE: Trump tells governors: "You’ve got to arrest people, you have to track people, you have to put them in jail for 10 years and you’ll never see this stuff again," per audio obtained by
@CBSNews
Holy fuck that's absolutely insane
> TRUMP ADDS: "You know when other countries watch this, they’re watching this, the next day wow, they’re really a push over. And we can’t be a push over. And we have all the resources – it’s not like we don’t have the resources. So, I don’t know what you’re doing."
Actually what we're thinking is you're a dictator

@TimStone Woooow
Honestly, whenever I think he can't sink any lower, he does.
At this rate I'm wondering how long it'll be until protesters and rioters just storm past the white house gates

4:57 PM
Obama wrote a thing medium.com/@BarackObama/…
> So the bottom line is this: if we want to bring about real change, then the choice isn’t between protest and politics. We have to do both. We have to mobilize to raise awareness, and we have to organize and cast our ballots to make sure that we elect candidates who will act on reform.
Sure is interesting to see the difference in response from the current POTUS and the previous one.
@TimStone Related article: cbsnews.com/news/…
> "You've got to arrest these people. You've got arrest these people – and you've got to charge them," the president said to the governors. "And you can't do this deal where they get one week in jail. These are terrorists, these are terrorists, they're looking to do bad things to our country. They're Antifa and they're radical left."
@TimStone Fuller quote:
> And Illinois Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker called on the president to tone down his political rhetoric. "We have to call for calm, we have to have police reform called for. … The rhetoric coming out of the White House is making it worse."

> "I don't like your rhetoric much, either," the president said before moving on. "But that's okay, we don't agree with each other."

5:39 PM
> Biden said "there are a lot of different things that can change" about police training. One example he said was if cops rushed by unarmed person, they could "shoot them in the leg instead of the heart is a very different thing."

5:50 PM
so apparently Cincinnati just held hundreds of people outside last night
"It's dangerous for you to violate the curfew" yeah man you run the risk of getting beaten up by 6 cops in full riot gear
and then get zip tied and left outside for 9 hours

wow this is so great, Vox (an insane far-right horrible political party) in Spain is using Trump's declaration that Antifa is a terrorist organization for political gain
@Nzall he said "an armed person with a knife"
didn't say that they should shoot unarmed people
still should be shooting less people either way

Honestly given that a lot of them train with the IDF it's surprising that they don't shoot more people in the leg

@Unionhawk what's the IDF
oh Israel defense forces?

Yeah

do they come here to train them or is it that police go there for training?

5:59 PM
Departments send guys there to train

@Unionhawk uhhh wtf

Welcome to hell
Population: 1 guy who is surprised american cops don't play "see how many kneecaps you can shoot", and also the rest of you

@Unionhawk we should not do this
police should not train with a military, that’s insane
also one with so many problems with very excessive force

6:17 PM
If looting is bad murdering a small business owner is worse right?
> Conrad said it is unclear if the person who was shot was the person who also fired at the officers
Hmmmmmmmmmmm

I uh, don't think that was unclear
Pretty sure that's actually "clearly did not"

tfw you were definitely shot at but not sure if you shot the person who shot you, since it could have been someone else you shot
The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is firing indiscriminately at other people

6:51 PM
@Nzall lol

@Nzall Uh, okay

7:11 PM
I think the content was discussed above, but here is a full WaPo article on Trump's call with governors:
> Trump also called on the governors to take back the streets and use force to confront protesters. He said if they did not, they would look like “fools,” alarming several governors on the call as they communicated privately, according to the officials.
Yeah, soooooooooooooooo not what we need right now

1 hour later…
8:32 PM
@Unionhawk Hmmm apparently the police didn't have their bodycams on either! The police chief has subsequently been fired

8:43 PM
@TimStone Sounds like the chief was already retiring this month

Of course

@TimStone Also no, because material goods are more valuable than people.
At least, that's certainly what a lot of people seem to think...

So I watched the video from inside the courtyard of the Hamilton County Justice Center, where hundreds of people were held outside, overnight, with no food, water, bathrooms, or blankets, for over 9 hours, and I'm not having a good time right now

8:59 PM
@Unionhawk That's in Cincinatti?

@BradC yes
1 prisoner had a seizure and needed to be revived

@Unionhawk That's beyond fucked up

Trump: 'I wish we had an occupying force' cbc.ca/player/play/1744994371721

9:43 PM
go back into your underground bunker, dude. Stop getting ideas

> President Donald Trump could announce as early as Monday night that he’s invoking a 213-year-old federal law that would allow him to deploy active-duty U.S. troops to respond to protests in cities across the country, according to four people familiar with the decision.

@BradC He's really trying to escalate shit. I just hope that in the end nobody follows as most power is still with the states as far as I understand. He could override that, but then he'd also have no easy way to shift responsibility away from jim
@Wipqozn It's probably Stephen Miller egging on Trump, and a bunch of other assholes.

> But the president could invoke the Insurrection Act to deploy active-duty troops without a request from a governor. Those troops would be allowed to conduct law enforcement missions. To invoke the act, Trump would first have to issue a proclamation to “immediately order the insurgents to disperse and retire peaceably to their abodes within a limited time,” according to the law.
@MadScientist It would certainly explain how he knew this was a thing that existed.

@MadScientist probably
> Some of the president’s aides have been encouraging him for days to invoke the act, as he weighs options for exercising executive powers to address the crisis. The act was last invoked during the 1992 Rodney King riots in Los Angeles.

If there is one thing Trump understands, it's shifting blame to others. I think that might be the only thing preventing him from invoking that kind of power
Right now he can just blame the governors.

10:39 PM
OAP Claims He’s Been Mysteriously Receiving Pizza Deliveries He Didn’t Order For Almost A Decade igvofficial.com/…
I really want pizza now

10:58 PM
DC police apparently aren't even involved, this is all the federal government clearing people out for Trump's photo op

How did park rangers even get their hands on tear gas?

I'm assuming it was some combination of federal agencies

Trump threatens to deploy military amid national unrest axios.com/…
The fact he doesn't even seem to address, you know, the incident that started all this and the police brutality just speaks volumes about how little he cares
Videos from outside the whitehouse twitter.com/atrupar/status/1267586046595923968
He makes a point to say he's protecting your second amendment rights. Fucking psychopath.
@TimStone Good thing he tear gassed all those protesters to do that

"Is that your bible?" "It's a bible"

11:42 PM
Bill de Blasio is apparently going to use the first veto of his mayorship
He's going to veto a ban on the use of chokeholds by NYPD
@Wipqozn oh huh
I just saw this presented as a possible angle
The Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) (H.R. 3210, Pub.L. 107–297) is a United States federal law signed into law by President George W. Bush on November 26, 2002. The Act created a federal "backstop" for insurance claims related to acts of terrorism. The Act "provides for a transparent system of shared public and private compensation for insured losses resulting from acts of terrorism." The Act was originally set to expire December 31, 2005, was extended for two years in December 2005, and was extended again on December 26, 2007. The Terrorism Risk Insurance Program Reauthorization Act expired...

@Wipqozn Holy fuck the GOP already tweeted it out as an ad clip

@Unionhawk tl;dr?
@TimStone Holy shit. Wow.

@Wipqozn If you're involved in a terrorism your insurance company doesn't have to pay out

@TimStone Gotcha

"Ah sucks you lost an eye but shouldn't have been involved in a terrorism, since by protesting you are clearly antifa, and thus a terrorist, because you're anti-fascist"
