Per judge's order tonight, prosecutors have now filed the redacted 302 (FBI interview notes) prepared after agents sat down with Michael Flynn on 1/24/17. Here it is: https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/5633260/12-17-18-Redacted-Flynn-Interview-302.pdf

NEW: i did a deep dive into how exactly Russia weaponized the tools of the influencer economy to turn Instagram into a disinformation machine, and it’s without a doubt wilder than you’d expect. https://www.wired.com/story/how-instagram-became-russian-iras-social-network/

user15026
@GodEmperorDune well, it wasn't wilder than I expected, it was about exactly what I expected, but a good article nonetheless

> there are two unsettling reasons for the Russians to hawk merch: transaction data and ad targeting. Transactions could have given the IRA access to a wealth of personal data about the purchaser, including their name, address, email, and phone number, and perhaps even payment details—all of which could have been used to further target divisive ads and more IRA content in the future.
@Ash i mean i know little about insta so it was wild for me
It sounds like Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey really mailed his beard hair to Azealia Banks https://trib.al/qgfHoHi
how is this guy still in charge of twitter?
and it's not as creepy as the headline suggests
still weird though

@GodEmperorDune Wait how?

> She tweeted about this exchange in 2016, writing that Dorsey “sent me his hair in an envelope because i was supposed to make him an amulet for protection.

12:17 AM
Also how is it Azealia Banks again? lol
Hmm that's somehow weirder but less creepy, accepted

> At the time, Banks said Dorsey promised to promote her mixtape Slay-Z in exchange for her promoting his cash transfer app Square and her crafting him a magical object that might protect him from ISIS, which had threatened Dorsey in a video earlier that year. (Dorsey never tweeted about the project and presumably never received the amulet.)

@GodEmperorDune My god that was a sentence

what's more messed up than Trump America? Brexit!

@TimStone she's like the disaster guy of tech CEO meltdowns
also not sure if its a race thing where "hey this is the only black lady i know, i think she can do something magical for me"
or Azealia Banks going "sure i'll make you an amulet to protect you from ISIS... no refunds"

12:20 AM
@Memor-X No, I'm pretty sure Trump is pants on fire crazy.

y'all. Y'ALL. WHY ISN'T ANYBODY DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS?!?! Y'ALL ARE ACCEPTING THIS!?!?
looooooooool

@TimStone because you can't stop stupid

12:35 AM
@TimStone uhhhhhh is this grift the new gofundme?

@GodEmperorDune Apparently but also I have to go destroy him now that's the law

@TimStone yours doesn't say tim tho

tbf I'm not 100% sure his actually says Roger, but this was back in the high school days when it was cool to refer to everyone by their last name
Also the colouring on those googly eyes has not held up at all, lol

Okay this time it's that Kennedy /cc @GodEmperorDune

@TimStone that was the first thing i noticed

1:32 AM
@TimStone sadly accurate for the future of the democratic party
@TimStone lol, cuck
@TimStone uhhhhhhhhh i could see how you are angry at the news media, commissioner
@TimStone this one is a cluster
@TimStone yeah i would probably get a name change if i was in this person's shoes

@TimStone lmao

@GodEmperorDune Not even in the slightest at this point

didn't jk3 sign a "I won't take money from fossil fuel companies" pledge? or was that just a "no corporate pacs*" pledge

Look he's not taking money from the companies he's taking it from their stocks

*exclusions apply, etc
he literally owns oil and gas companies, so to speak
That's only sort of an overstatement

@TimStone i mean it was foolish to think that energy companies wouldn't get some of this green new deal money

That's why he invested!

they knew about climate change for decades and have had time to diversify into green energy too

and, again, predict that melting ice would help their business anyway

@TimStone I like this.

3:39 PM
@Unionhawk Well that's nice
Just...wow. I can understand needing additional professionally trained personal to help with "Riot Control"... buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut holy fuck. Hold another bloody vote.
and holy snap, politicians, get some bloody integrity
Just admit already to your populace that everyone running that Brexit campaign just straight up lied to you, and played on your fears of immigration and other shit just to win the next election
why else do you think everyone involved in that campaign bailed as soon as the vote happened?
ETERNAL 2016
oh and well you're at it
Maybe actually toss those politicians in jail, for like, a really long bloody time
Since lying like that as a politician to advance your own agenda and to get in power should be punishable with very serious jail time
Perhaps life imprisonment

3:59 PM
@Unionhawk Accurate

@TimStone VF laying it on pretty thick here in this Prep article.

New York attorney general says Trump Foundation “has signed a stipulation agreeing to dissolve under judicial supervision, with review and approval by the attorney general of proposed recipient charities of the foundation’s remaining assets,” and lawsuit will still move forward.

I guess, need to see the rule
Flynn's sentencing is also now in progress
WHOA. Judge Sullivan says the circumstances of Flynn's FBI interview, as raised by his attorneys last week, "concerned the court." Sullivan says they raise "issues that may call into question his guilty plea."
Asks Flynn if he wants to challenge the circumstances of the interview and Flynn says no
looooool he openly admits that he knew lying to the FBI was a crime what is going on here

I don't think that matters here though, lying to the FBI isn't one of the weird white collar crimes that have ignorance as a valid defense

it looks like they're walking back the entire argument that there was anything fishy about the FBI interview

Yeah, it's like totally a smack upside the head to the conspiracy theorist and the President and his lawyer which is redundant
Judge: “Is it your contention that Mr. Flynn was entrapped by the FBI?” Defense lawyer: “No, your honor.”

4:28 PM
I find it interesting that lying to the FBI is actually illegal. It isn't illegal to lie to the police in general in Germany if you would incriminate yourself.

Meanwhile
As soon as white people who love Trump are threatened with 16 months at club fed, Canteen Kurt is ready to become antifa

lol

@TimStone but how will he slush fund the 2020 race then?

@MadScientist It's actually making false statements in any regard of a federal jurisdiction, it just happens to come up most often with the FBI. But you can refuse to say anything, of course
It's not great though!

In Germany you can actually lie. Not if you're a witness, but if you would incriminate yourself.

4:35 PM
@TimStone “did you murder this person?” “No comment”
Anyway whilst on the topic of lying...
I wrote about influencers faking sponsored content deals https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/12/influencers-are-faking-brand-deals/578401/

> Google isn’t the company that we should have handed the Web over to

This is a company that, time and again, has tried to push the Web into a Google-controlled proprietary direction to improve the performance of Google's online services when used in conjunction with Google's browser, consolidating Google's market positioning and putting everyone else at a disadvantage.

A person claiming to be a former Edge developer has today described one such action. For no obvious reason, Google changed YouTube to add a hidden, empty HTML element that overlaid each video. This element disabled Edge's

@TimStone Please let this mean McConnell loses his goddamn seat in the next election.

Judge Sullivan to Michael Flynn: “Arguably, you sold your country out."
DID FLYNN COMMIT TREASON? Sullivan is now asking the special counsel's office whether it ever considered charging Flynn with treason. Prosecutor Brandon Van Grack struggles to answer, saying it wasn't considered.

@Yuuki KY governor is a 2019 election

Kentucky is pretty red and a statewide office going Democrat may or may not mean something.
Especially if the GOP candidate is losing to both of his Democratic competitors.

Bevin is also a dumbass though.

But yeah, also we're still a year out.

And we'll see if that actually plays out
Right
Recess in the proceedings at Flynn's request after the judge said "Hmm maybe treason?" which I suspect is not a happy thing to hear from the person sentencing you

@TimStone sad trombone noises

5:08 PM
it sounded like the judge is considering a pretty heavy sentence,

@Wipqozn moans sadly in caribou

The judge begins by clarifying that he wasn't suggesting Michael Flynn committed treason, he was asking to get a sense of offenses — "I was just curious." Prosecutor Brandon Van Grack says the government had no reason to believe Flynn committed treason
lol, "I was just asking guys"

@TimStone it sounds like he misunderstood the timeline a bit

user15026
@GodEmperorDune I think the thing that like breaks my brain the most is that most of this is teenagers

user15026
Like...what sort of world are we in that teens are like "yes this hustle and lying and fancy crap is what I want"

user15026
We have created this disgusting monster.

@Ash I mean, this is more depressing in its way, but it's not like teenagers doing bad things is new. The Georgetown Prep article was posted here in the last 24 hours.
Just a different manifestation of the same human nature we always see.

6:17 PM
@GodEmperorDune That would certainly be my preference, but this method will probably result in less people losing their jobs. Also probably cheaper for the government?

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 Well, yes, I know that - it's less for me about teens doing bad stuff, actually

user15026
It's more "we have created this capitalist hellscape where this sort of sponsorship glitz and glam hustle to sell people stuff is a thing people aspire to"

user15026
Like the whole idea of "influencers" as a job feels ridiculous. You're basically aspiring to be living breathing ad space

@Wipqozn cheaper in the short term, more expensive in the long term because of externalities, like climate damage
@Ash yeah the whole thing is a mess

@GodEmperorDune Unless I'm misunderstanding the money is intended to be used for them to start investing in greener energies.

6:20 PM
@Wipqozn they should've done that with their previous profits
instead they were investing in building pipelines and fooling around with tar sands and other extremely inefficient ways to get more oil
@Ash at least with the gig economy people are getting paid something. as a wannabe influencer, you are rolling the dice to maybe get paid down the line

user15026
@GodEmperorDune Yeah, that's the other weird part, you're doing all this hustle to maybe get noticed by some random place that will likely at most give you free product which isn't really sustainable

user15026
(Like this feels like Scott Westerfeld's Uglies/Pretties/Specials books coming to life and that's...terrfiying!)

@GodEmperorDune I mean, I don't disagree with you. I'd much rather the government just invest that money into other companies that are just dedicated to green energy and for the oil execs to just get tossed into the sea. But the oil & gas industry employs 6% of the Alberta labour force (~140k people), so if they go under it's going to leave a lot of people unemployed.

user15026
@Wipqozn Yeah, that's something people forget, too - like yes, cleaner energy is good, but also not dropping huge piles of people out of work in the process is also good

@Wipqozn the time for less disruptive measures to address climate change was a decade ago
have the government pay all the laid off people directly

6:29 PM
this is also, partially relatedly, why dsa's medicare for all principles include a just transition for workers in the industry now (billing departments, insurance companies, etc)

user15026
@GodEmperorDune Sorry, but....that's...not practical.

or nationalize all the energy companies

user15026
Like I get that we're talking pie in the sky sort of fixes, but....

user15026
@GodEmperorDune We kinda tried that, and now Ontario has OPG threatening strike action, which means that if they strike, large swaths of Ontario could be without power. In the winter. So that's....not a perfect solution or an easy one either.

user15026
This stuff is messy and awful and awkward and terrible

6:31 PM
@Ash winning is easy, governing is harder

user15026
.....yes? I know.

It is true that any necessary drastic shift must not leave workers behind, but that does not make such shifts less necessary
But it is not enough to throw money at an existing energy company with existing oil and gas operations and go "hopefully they look at the long term cost-benefit and make the right call"

@GodEmperorDune I don't disagree with you that drastic steps need to be taken, but those steps also need to be practical. Large portions of the population being unemployed or without power isn't practical.
@Unionhawk We really don't know enough about how the Government plans to enforce the conditions they've faced on this money to say it's them just going "hopefully this happens"

Forgive me for having no faith in Doug Ford's provincial government here
wait

@Unionhawk This has nothing to do with doug Ford

6:46 PM
@Wipqozn 1) large portions of the population are already underemployed and will likely be permanently unemployed going forward as we automate more and more things. Large portions of the population being employed is not practical long term unless you do make-work programs

@Wipqozn I swear I googled this and google told me ontario this is too confusing
I am declaring war on canada

When they say "money from Ottawa" it means the federal government, @Unionhawk. Maybe similar to "money from Washington", if that's an expression in the states?

oh

@Unionhawk Ottawa is from Ontario yes.

Why can't ottawa be its own weird state like a normal country
Thereby reducing confusion
of me

6:47 PM
2) we have public utilities all over the place that are keeping the power on, don't blame workers for the strike, improve working conditions

Rephrased: forgive me for not having faith in Justin Truedau's government here then?

@Unionhawk There's more oddities than that in the government system. The provincial government and the federal government parties are basically completely unrelated to each other, from what I can tell. Like the NS conservatives are way more left than the federal conservatives.
shits weird
@Unionhawk That and a combination of the Alberta premier, I think.

@Unionhawk Don't indirectly encourage Quebec

@Wipqozn hm, yeah
:/
We shall see I guess

@Ash Well said regarding what influencers boils down to.

6:50 PM
Breaking = A state district judge has denied the request of @HPOUTX and the city of Houston block implementation of Prop. B / firefighter pay parity. "While this Court is sensitive to the budget difficulties...Houston voters decided they would rather have pay parity."

anyways, I gotta get back to work. Like I don't disagree this isn't an ideal solution, but I'm not even sure what an ideal solution would even look like, especially if it's just individual countries taking action.
but getting companies to start investing in green energy more seems like a good step forward, even if it's not a large enough step

lol Tucker got dropped by IHOP

I mean the best step would be to just straight up ban the sales of all new non-electric vehicles starting in the year 2020-something, since I believe vehicles are far and away the biggest contributor to climate change in Canada (especially during the winter).
which I'd love to see, honestly.
I know Nova Scotia has been making efforts to increase the availability of electric charging stations, which is certainly the first step on that path

@TimStone i think @Yuuki said the firefighters broke election laws while advocating for this

anyways, I actually do need to get back to work

6:54 PM
@TimStone tfw being an open white nationalist is potentially problematic for your sponsors

@Unionhawk i dunno, pewdiepie is making it work somehow

No he's just doing it by accident

Apparently Just For Men dropped him too which is a commitment since the Stephen Miller demographic is a core audience

@Unionhawk yeah but he still made a ton of money

@GodEmperorDune imagine making videos of yourself namesearching on twitter dot com

yep
which like 1) why does anybody care and 2) lol

@Unionhawk 1) brown people surpassing a white man? well i never 2) hue

Well, completely trampled in the normal sense, but actually very legal and very cool due to the border doctrine which actually encompasses a large swath of the United States!

"Nearly two years after the FBI trapped Flynn, the crime the Justice Department was investigating remains unknown," writes @EliLake https://bloom.bg/2EsuaI5

tfw when you have no rights because you're in stereotypical border town checks notes Los Angeles

iirc around 2/3 of the country lives in the CBP 100 mile zone

user15026
7:02 PM
@puzzlepiece87 Thanks! It's just what bothers me most.

@Unionhawk Can you imagine the arrogance you have to have to publish that right before the dude goes up to bat?

including all of NYC, the entire state of Florida, etc

"We owe him an apology"
"Did you do the crimes?"
"Yes"
"We owe him an apology?"

@puzzlepiece87 the coasts count as a border zone?

yep

7:05 PM
Kind of impressed that they haven't tried to bend it so that every port of entry (i.e. any international airport) doesn't also count

heh
they can already get a solid chunk of international airports
as it is

Right but 100 mile radius from every one of them would get most of the country

@GodEmperorDune Anywhere counts as a border zone if you try hard and believe in yourself.

@puzzlepiece87 the real treasure were the civil rights we trampled along the way

@TimStone yeah, it's missing CVG (which I think has an international flight still), DEN, ATL,
DFW I guess
DAY, yeah, you'd get most or all of Ohio actually

7:09 PM
> Rodriguez asked Elsharkawi to unlock his phone, which he declined to do. He then also refused to answer further questions without having an attorney present. Another officer told Elsharkawi that he was not under arrest and as such had no right to an attorney—at which point he asked to be released.

Officer Rodriguez responded by stating that Mr. Elsharkawi had an attitude, was obviously racist, and had a problem with the uniform of CBP officers. Officer Rodriguez told Mr. Elsharkawi to put his hands behind his back, and handcuffed him.
@Unionhawk @TimStone You'd be amazed how many regional airports in the middle of nowhere are international airports supposedly somehow.

Yeah I know, CVG is tiny (was a delta hub) but I think they still run a couple

Two in Akron Ohio alone.

mexico, dominican republic, and canada only though

Appleton, WI
Bangor Maine, Rochester Minnesota (No, not that Rochester, the other Rochester apparently)

@puzzlepiece87 iirc it’s based on size of the runways so that they could theoretically accomodate an international aircraft even if they don’t have flights

7:17 PM
Either way, the status quo now is dumb
@GodEmperorDune Not necessarily, HDN is Yampa Valley Regional, only services regional flights, has no customs etc, but lands 737s every day

@Unionhawk well then I was lied to as a child
Speaking of lies
I'm paraphrasing here, but the White House press secretary said they're not asked for wall money from taxpayers, they're trying to get it from government agencies.
This is like verbal money laundering

Extremely not to be confused with Steamboat Springs Airport (SBS), which absolutely can not take off a 737 (it can technically land one, I guess, in that one has landed there at least once)
(and had to be disassembled)

> **Despite the name, Reagan National does offer limited international flights to destinations such as Canada and Bermuda. Reagan National although, does not have an International Passenger Handling Facility operated by US Customs. Therefore, it does serve international flights but does not meet the full definition of an international airport as it does not have the capability to process international passengers in a CBP processing facility.
@Unionhawk ooooh, I definitely would have guessed landing would be more stressful for a runway than taking off! Oh, I'm super dumb, it's not about up/down forces, it's about length of space needed to take off/brake. You can brake faster than you can speed up apparently.

pre-9/11, fortunately for everyone aboard

7:24 PM
though TWA said it would be able to fly out, that may or may not be the same story I'm thinking of

@puzzlepiece87 oh so you need a customs area to be an international sirport
@puzzlepiece87 yeah, heavier planes need more runway to get to a faster speed to take off

Either way, that plane was extremely not supposed to land at that airport

> Officer Jennifer also commented that Mr. Elsharkawi had a lot of apps and a lot of unread emails on his phone.
Uhh... I regularly don't read all the email I have.

@puzzlepiece87 so... it has international departures but not arrivals?

Now I feel like I have to clear all my notifications before I get shot by border control or something.

7:30 PM
I guess?

@Yuuki More importantly to the CBP you're also not white.
@Unionhawk I'm not clear on that!

My version of android added a "lockdown" button in the power off menu

@Yuuki Don't forget to clear your ethnicity as well.

It disables fingerprint to next unlock, and hides all notifications

@Unionhawk Indeed I appreciated that addition.

7:32 PM
This is the CBP 100-mile zone.
Pretty sure that covers every major city in the US.
Incidentally, all of Michigan is in the CBP 100-mile zone.

@puzzlepiece87 no hm I see AA4232 from Toronto arrived and a couple others at least

@Yuuki maine too

> All immigration and customs screenings for these flights take place prior to boarding at the point of origination.
there it is

@GodEmperorDune Possibly Hawaii as well. We can't know for sure as it's not on the map.
Never mind, just scroll a bit.

7:37 PM
Yeah, all of hawaii, maine, michigan, florida, and the occupied parts of alaska

@puzzlepiece87 I was thinking of a steamboat springs incident that was probably the TWA flight from 2001 above
March 2001 though so it was mostly fine
Imagine that happening in October 2001

@Yuuki tbh anyone who sneaks into the US through alaska's northern border should just be let in

@Unionhawk You recall correctly: "Two-thirds of the US lives inside this so-called 100-mile border zone, which includes several entire states, including Florida, Michigan, Maine and Hawaii, according to the American Civil Liberties Union."

@GodEmperorDune Santa for real

Are there any Wii fitness games that incorporate heart rate monitoring?

@barlop Not that I know of, but chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/35

@puzzlepiece87 seriously. that would be the worst place to station CBP agents

@barlop tbf I've heard there's some tremendous games out there but you have to hire the best people to play them, everybody says so

7:42 PM
for the agents anyway

@puzzlepiece87 hire the best people to play them? you've lost me

@barlop its a political joke

@GodEmperorDune tfw when staying up to watch for Santa Claus is your job

Is there any game console that includes a heart rate monitor in its games?

@puzzlepiece87 doesn't norad do that

7:44 PM
@barlop Sorry for confusing you. Being serious again, you're in the wrong room. Go to the room Unionhawk recommended. Good luck!

@GodEmperorDune Racism in action.

@Frank yeppppp. they blamed it on "we had a lot of fraud lately" and being overzealous

@GodEmperorDune Yeah but that's cheating, you're not doing it right if you're not huddled in the (Alaskan) dark with an eye on your Christmas tree (and 100,000 of its closest friends, assuming there are forests that far north)

@GodEmperorDune Easy out

@puzzlepiece87 nope once you get far enough north there are no trees
not even bushes really, just grasses and moss/lichens

7:47 PM
@GodEmperorDune Ah thanks!

i mean eventually its just ice but before that part
@puzzlepiece87 pictures
Reporter: Where are the additional monies for this wall going to come from and why is [Trump] asking the American taxpayer for them when he promised Mexico was going to pay? Sanders: We’re not asking American taxpayers…We are looking at existing funding through other agencies https://t.co/9YaXRL4UTG

@GodEmperorDune Fantastic, thank you

@TimStone ah
Text messages to the student say "Sorry. I really just wanted to f--- you," the records show. The student responded, "Please stop. This is unprofessional."
wow

Alan Dershowitz Is Lying To You https://www.popehat.com/2018/12/18/alan-dershowitz-is-lying-to-you/

do they not realize that text messages can be subpoenaed?

@BradC I find it interesting that he also disagrees on what the law should be. I'd agree with this, and I find the idea that simply lying to the authorities about your crimes is already criminal dangerous

10:15 PM
@MadScientist Right. Some of his prior writings linked in the last paragraph show he's consistent on the issue, no matter who gets caught in that trap.
As much as I want to see Trump and his entire criminal mafia go to prison, I'm hesitant painting the FBI as the "good guys", broadly speaking

I think this law makes it a bit too easy for law enforcement, and gives them too much power. And not necessarily in a way that catches more bad guys

@MadScientist Yep. Similar in many ways to the "FBI should have back doors into your encrypted tech" debate. Uh, how about no?

I mentioned it earlier, but in Germany it's explicitly allowed to lie to cover up your own crimes, as long as you don't do stuff like intentionally throwing suspicion on someone else

@MadScientist Right, because "no I didn't commit crimes" is kind of... a clear result of the original act, not a new crime in and of itself
(or, should be, but it is in the US, in some contexts)

@GodEmperorDune Do you... not understand where that money comes from?
