12:35 AM
@Unionhawk aka it's not going to happen, at least in the USA
Paris accords are a thing, and well, yeah
Not unless the GOP is kicked out of office anyways, along with Trump
And if china can do it, so can every other country in the world, considering how highly industrialized and population dense they are
Mind you china still has a loooooooooooooooong way to go, but so does the rest of the world

@Wipqozn at least they are steps ahead

@Memor-X yeah which is actually my key point

@Wipqozn Um soooooooooooo I know you were simplifying buttttttt

Since Trump and his base just love to go "GLobal warming is because of the non-white peo- err I mean the Chinese!"
@puzzlepiece87 But what?

@Wipqozn If we're increasing the nuance level, "Authoritarian one party rule country that perceived pollution as a legitimate threat to its stranglehold on power clamped down massively on pollution through a variety of good and questionable means" does not in any way lead to "so can every other country in the world".

12:45 AM
@puzzlepiece87 Except it does? Because all the matters is "IS this achievable with our current technology?"
I'm not making any comment on the politics of the things, it's just "THis is a thing any country can achieve if they actually tried"
Which they can, and countries (Well, most) are already taking steps to do it

@Wipqozn I'm not sure where you're drawing the line if you're ignoring politics. Literally we could just shut down every power plant and destroy every vehicle, no technology required.
Baseball bat manufacturers rejoice.

Okay but now you're just being ridiculous
The idea that we're incapable of making reasonable steps to reduce CO2 emissions is just false

@Wipqozn That's not what I said.

@puzzlepiece87 You're being extremely hypoblic

But pointing to China as a followable model is also false.
@Wipqozn What I said was that you're drawing the line somewhere and I'm not sure where you're drawing it.
@Wipqozn If you're able to give a little more detail I'll better understand where you're coming from.
@Wipqozn Let's take one thing that China has done in its biggest cities that isn't an abuse on its face and apply it to Canada.

12:50 AM
@puzzlepiece87 To be honest I'm not really interested. The only reason the world hasn't made larger progress towards CO2 emissions is because of politics and Oil companies promoting a false "global warming isn't real" campaign.

In China's biggest cities, they've increased the car registration fees to an amount well in excess of the total sales price of the car and furthermore said that if your license plate is odd, you can only drive on certain weekdays, other weekdays for evens.

and we can do so without committing civil rights abuses

Can we de-pin the message on the right?

@puzzlepiece87 Yeah, but the key thing is they've reduce CO2 by reducing the amount of fossil fuels from cars. Other cities could achieve that by better increasing public transport and better funding around electric cars.
Pursuring greener means of energy is another way
Parts of the USA under Trump are trying to actually make it illegal to have greener power since they want to keep the coal companies in business. Doing not that, and then also giving better funding around green energies helps with those emissions.
None of this is unreasonable or unreachable.
AS for China, my main reason for being China into it was that "Because China" is a reason the GOP have been tossing around past couple years of why they shouldn't even bother trying to fight climate change.
Whereas in reality, china is taking steps (regardless of how), so the notion that somehow there's no point in other countries even trying "Because China" is just a falsehood
@puzzlepiece87 I thought about that, but shog9 pinned it for a reason, and so I'm just going to wait for it to de-pin itself in a week and a half

@Wipqozn Oh okay, that's fair. Wasn't sure who pinned it.

1:00 AM
@puzzlepiece87 If you look at a messages history you can see the pinner

@Wipqozn Ah, so you can, thanks!
@Wipqozn Thanks for taking the time to explain more clearly what you were trying to say. I agree with you.

@puzzlepiece87 Yes I didn't mean to imply "yeah guys china totally isn't committing human rights abuses" because, well , yeah
I mean the iPhone plants with their suicide nets is just one example

@Wipqozn it's even a bigger project than that, I think, and we're running out of time.

@Wipqozn What I took away from your added detail is "What I'm trying to say is that every country needs to get its butt in gear and somehow do all the reasonable things that would help the situation."

A question came up in one of our readings, "do you think this project of organizing the working class might take another generation" and the consensus was pretty "we don't have another generation"

1:04 AM
@Unionhawk It is, but with the GOP in office it'll literally never happen
Especially under Trump
The democrats under Obama were obviously doing better, although I'm not sure by how much
But well Paris Accords were a thing at least

@Wipqozn The "somehow" and abandoning of the original "if China can then so can everyone else" premise brought me into full agreement.

@puzzlepiece87 Gotcha
Honestly the whole thing just stems from my growing frustration with the rights tactic of blaming "those pesky non-whites" for whatever problem is going on. Not just the GOP, because the Canadian conservative party is trying to pull the same nonsense with their "Birthing Tourism" complaints
Birthing tourism being that anyone born in Canada is a Canadian citizen
PC party recently voted that they're against it, and will take step to remove it if they get rid of it
Even though there's absolutly no data to support it's a problem
The statistic we have suggest the number of folks earning citizenship this way whose parents aren't already on the path to it is extremely small, and even then it's like...what's the problem? What's the concern?
Because it's not some way for parents to get aquick path to a citizenship. CAnadian citizenship is really hard to earn, and having kids with a citizenship is 100% irrelevant to the Canadian government. Having family with a citizenship only matters if they 18+, at which point they can sponsor you,but to sponsor you they need to show they earn a high enough income that they can support you if required.

Also yeah I was going to say this is a non problem even if it happens a lot

user15026
@Wipqozn Yeaaaaah

user15026
Like the whole thing is stupid

1:11 AM
So even if that was the parents plan, they sure are taking a long con, and in return Canada would get a citizen who pays a lot of taxes?

user15026
as someone dealing with Canadian immigration, like...what the hell

I'm not seeing a downside here to these kids getting a citizenship
@Ash Just tell your SO to travel back in time and be born on Parliament hill surrounded by beavers making maple syrup and eating poutine

user15026
Apparently that's all we need

@Ash IS there any actual timeline on when he'll earn his citizenship? Assuming that looks like what the ending will be

user15026
Well, kinda?

user15026
1:14 AM
Like we have to submit the application to CIC for permanent residence

user15026
so we do that hopefully when he is here in a couple weeks, if his background check arrives by then

Oh right you need to be a perma resident for a while first too, don't you

user15026
Then we wait for them to approve me to sponsor, then there's some interim stuff he has to do, then they approve him to be a permanent resident

I've never had to deal with it so I'm not familiar with all the inner workings, but I know it's not an easy process.

user15026
Then he has x days to come here to claim it (I do not know hte value of x, the internet is very quiet on that)

user15026
1:15 AM
then he can go home and get his stuff in order etc

user15026
We then have to wait 6-8 weeks for his PR card to arrive to me, which grants him the right to healthcare (although we have to apply to OHIP for the actual card), all the usual stuff minus voting rights and a few other bits that really in the grand scheme of things aren't really a big deal

user15026
then we wait 5 years (of which he has to be in the country for...3 I think, they measure it in days so it's confusing)

user15026
then he can apply for citizenship, do the test, say the oath, yadda yadda

FYI @Ash if it helps you feel accompanied on the journey, Mrs. Puzzle is doing the same thing for USA.

All of which is something any parents of birthing would need to go through too, starting at the day their kid turns 18

user15026
1:18 AM
@puzzlepiece87 I bet it's just as complicated, and I'm sorry that you have to go through it

So it would be an even longer con than I thought

user15026
@Wipqozn yep, pretty much

They'd have grandkids by the time they'd benefit from their oh so brilliant plan!

@Ash It's okay, we've had it relatively easy. We're just holding our breath, hoping things don't change in the next 2+ years, and keeping Mrs. Puzzle away from the cops.

user15026
nods

user15026
1:19 AM
Right now i am just like "Dear FBI please to be processing and mailing my husband's background check" because that's the LAST bit we need to mail the big scary packet

> A judge has ruled it is reasonable to keep a prisoner in solitary confinement at the Burnside jail for more than a year and a half due to his violent behaviour.

user15026
(and I have nothing to go on there beyond 14-16 weeks processing time, if I really want I can try to call and ask what date of reciept they're processing currently, but that means a phone call)

@Ash Googles NCIC's turnaround time these days

> Diggs, 24, has more than 50 charges pending, for offences including assaulting and obstructing peace officers, uttering threats, sexual assault, sexual interference, robbery, theft, resisting arrest, causing a disturbance, breaching probation, breaching a court order, property mischief, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breaching a weapons prohibition.

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 14-16 weeks if mailed

1:21 AM
> Jail staffers have filed 15 disciplinary reports on Diggs since he’s been at Burnside, Justice Kevin Coady says in his written decision that was given orally on July 9.
Holy crap

user15026
Faster if you do it through a channeller but that came with it's own set of complications

@Ash Geez. So slow. I'm sorry.

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 Hey this is week 14

user15026
(or 15, maybe? I forget)

@Ash My employment background check with them took like 20 weeks (more thorough than your SO's but also expedited due to importance). It's a long process.

user15026
1:23 AM
him coming here is close to when it should be processed, anyhow, and he arrives in 10 days 20 hours (barring flight delays)

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 It is :(

user15026
I mean, we do what we do

user15026
its more that that taking forever means we have filled out some of the CIC's forms a few times because they keep changing

user15026
and so many of them need signatures....

@Ash Our version of this was having to reapply for work authorization since the permanent resident card didn't come for such a long time that it expired. (Or rather, it came with a mistake and had to be redone and that took like 12 weeks to sort out. Someone else's picture was on it.)

user15026
1:25 AM
@puzzlepiece87 oh boy

user15026
Although...not going to lie, knowing you are doing this too makes me feel...better? Like it sucks but we are both dealing with the suck?

user15026
(also man, what a mistake for them to make)

@Ash I thought you might feel that way :)

user15026
Thanks for that :)

user15026
(also, thanks to all y'all for like putting up with my complaining)

1:28 AM
@Ash Also, I'm half-deaf so I don't like using the phone. And you can laugh about this with me, I asked one of my friends to help me hear since I couldn't take their background check call effectively by myself, and then the calling investigator insisted on interviewing my friend too. Oops :P

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 oh, fun for everyone :P

Mattis shoots down the Erik Prince contractor plan for Afghanistan: “When Americans put their country’s reputation on the line, privatizing it is probably not a good idea.”

@Ash This was all a long time ago and my extensive background check and all the personal information stored therein is now securely in the hands of Chinese OPM hackers for safekeeping :D

Let's hope it stays down this time, that was one of the more dangerously absurd possibilities being floated lately
@Unionhawk Yaaaaaaay throws self into the sun

to be fair that's probably correct

@Unionhawk True

12:16 PM
Also again I'm not entirely certain what they're looking to cut because from my understanding the protections largely do not exist

Per the article the concern is over a 6th Circuit ruling that actually the protections do need to exist

@Wipqozn Can we use that same argument to say that the second amendment wasn't intended to allow citizens to carry anything other than flintlocks?

@Wipqozn I mean, that works
But it's the other thinking face
Like finger to temple type thing

The possibility of Trump just shooting someone in cold blood and then absolutely nothing happening, because as that piece has pointed out, he's done so much shit and just the GOP and his supporters don't care

@Wipqozn Yep, they'll find some way to excuse it

@puzzlepiece87 There's a bit in there that I found interesting about how the superdelegate change created/fell along a racial divide.

@Yuuki Indeed, that was the most interesting point out of the points actually made, to me.
Generational divide among black voters

3:21 PM
I did also find it interesting that a common thread in the conversation was how the nomination should be quick and decisive.
You supposedly don't want second ballots at all.

3:40 PM
@Yuuki I interpreted it slightly differently.
I interpreted it as fewer ballots = more democratic, more ballots = more.. republican? Where you're not choosing directly? Am I expanding republic into an adjective there correctly?
And then the arguments from there seemed to stem from a personal preference from more chatters for a more democratic process, as well as a base assumption that that was the stated goal of the DNC reforms, to make the process more democratic.
And then some debate about whether that would actually be the outcome of the reform rather than just the intention.
@Yuuki So I interpreted it less as "you all don't want second ballots" to "I prefer a more democratic process (fewer second ballots), and but it's a tradeoff between democratic process and potential voter blunders (argument for republic..anism?)

I don't understand the argument that multiple rounds of voting is anti-democratic
Like, at all
That literally doesn't make sense
I suppose in the context of it becomes a free for all that delegates choose though, I guess

@Unionhawk This was the implied context yes.
Under the reforms, the superdelegates are excluded from first rounds but not later rounds of voting, basically.

That actually makes sense but perhaps,,, there are ways to make multiple rounds democratic

@Unionhawk Stop me if I'm misunderstanding you, but exactly, that's why I felt like they were dancing around STV without quite getting there. You don't need to pay for each round, you pay for one ballot and then it takes care of things from there.
> natesilver: There’s also the question of whether ranked-choice voting would produce a different result.
Nate got there but didn't go anywhere with it.

@puzzlepiece87 it's still a good change I think. While superdelegates have never directly reversed what would have been regular delegates voting, their presence in vote counts throughout the season still has a misleading influence
@puzzlepiece87 yeah there are various ranked voting systems with various "fairness" properties

3:53 PM
@Unionhawk I'd prefer more democratic processes as well, as much as I distrust voters at large, for the (demonstrating consistency) same ACLU reason that whatever change you put in to suppress bad ideas, like superdelegates, can just as easily be used to suppress good ones.

Ideally the job of delegates would be eliminated in favor of just running the votes through a stv or other ranked counter

@Unionhawk Agreed, that's my personal favorite and I felt like they were bumping against it like an invisible wall. It was like they were trying to find a solution to their stated problems and a great solution was right there, but instead they were talking tradeoffs between lesser solutions.

I mean, in my ideal world the whole thing is STV and we eliminate strategic voting entirely and maybe even elect a couple greens, but

I'm okay with STV also!

(for values of a couple greens meaning not the far right dude running on the green line in southern ohio somewhere lol)

3:57 PM
@puzzlepiece87 Personally, not a fan of Stranglethorn Valley.

I understand thanks to 538's analysis that partisanship in the US isn't just because of gerrymandering or FPTP, but it could certainly be eased by getting rid of those two things.
@Yuuki What do you have against ursas?
@Yuuki (I've barely played WoW, but I think that was a zone dominated by ursa creeps, right?)

It's a number of factors, but I think, for example, DSA's electoral strategy, is vastly weakened by the fact that we more or less have to work inside the machine

@puzzlepiece87 No?

and the machine chews up and spits out everything that enters it

@Yuuki Oops, where is it and what creeps is it dominated by?

It's at the southern tip of the Eastern Kingdoms.

@Wipqozn the race is between a very right wing person and very left wing person in a normally very centrist state... it's going to get wild

@GodEmperorDune I thought Florida was very right ring?

@Wipqozn recently yeah, but historically its a swing state

IIRC, Florida is a rather stratified state.

I am very hesitant to go "oh maybe he has the brainworms" because like...so many people do this, they get wealth and power and then we get to see how garbage they are because they feel like they're invulnerable now and can say and do what they want

6:06 PM
@Ash he's had money and power for a while though so I figured his garbage would have come out ages ago
It could just be another case of Trump making garbage people feel more empowered

I think it's just a general heightened consciousness towards these things

That might be exactly it
We just weren't paying close enough attention before

I think it's a good move that Riot is working with third-party consultants for this issue. They better listen to them though.
seriously get rid of beck

6:21 PM
@Yuuki its really the only option given how wide and high the issue is
If they actually act on anything will remain to be seen

@Wipqozn I could've sworn that similar companies with similar issues (cough cough Uber cough) haven't tried bringing outside consultants though?

@Yuuki clears throat and dons Super Cynicism Man costume That's because Uber's business model relies on acting like garbage and they are losing billions - Riot already makes money hand over fist.

user15026
@Yuuki This all sounds great on paper, I hope it actually bears fruit

@puzzlepiece87 Wish they'd put some of that money back into e-sports.
MSI took place in a studio and Worlds is in Incheon, not Seoul or Busan.

@Yuuki Sorry, Tencent needs it for further acquisitions. It takes money to buy all of the game companies.

6:31 PM
So what you're saying is that RNG better win Worlds this year.

@Yuuki machine voice One moment please, parsing the layers of this joke...

Context: RNG (Royal Never Give Up, the "Up" is silent) is a Chinese professional LoL team.
They've always done really well in the Chinese league but somehow never make it to international competitions.
Except for this year. They went to MSI and won and now they might go to Worlds. And maybe win.

@Yuuki Indeed, that's what my Googling just showed me. But I couldn't find their owner. Are they owned by Tencent?

Probably not, but it's more of a reference to Chinese nationalism.

@Yuuki I always assume that Chinese athletes are under "win or else" conditions.

6:35 PM
Worlds has typically been dominated by Korean teams. If RNG wins this year, it'd be another vector to display Chinese nationalism. And so Tencent might be... encouraged to make future Worlds more ostentatious.

> State-run news agency Nanjing Daily reported in 2010 that around 45% of Chinese athletes become unemployed after their retirement from sports.
> those who are entitled to benefits receive a monthly compensation of about $150.
@Yuuki Yes, this is a very good point ha
@Yuuki So circling all the way back, yes, RNG is your favorite team now if you want LoL's competitions to be higher grade :D
Thanks for walking me through all that, sorry I didn't get enough of it at first :)

One of dota or lol need to change their championship name
Worlds and The International are too close

@Unionhawk The easiest way would just be to include the company name, imo.

UPDATE to UPDATE: USPS #FOIA office says it has no record in its logs of America Rising's FOIA request for Spanberger's personnel file, meaning it did not process the request. HOWEVER ... 1/ https://twitter.com/JasonLeopold/status/1034841995858984960
(this is pretty wild, someone's full SF-86 being released like this)
McGahn believes Kushner and Ivanka helped push out news about him to force his hand, ppl close to him say. Ivanka Trump complained bitterly to her father about Times story on McGahn intvu w Mueller a few weeks back, per people briefed https://nyti.ms/2LCEHAn?smid=nytcore-ios-share

@TimStone Shoot, that's pretty extreme. Obviously if it is or is not truly needed depends on the nuances, but that's information that the person is never going to be able to change or put back in the bottle...
I was griping just yesterday about my own information being stolen from OPM, and that's still better than public release...

8:33 PM
DSA National has voted against the proposed endorsement of Cynthia Nixon
6-8
She is still endorsed by NYC
I'm honestly surprised by this development

9:08 PM
@Unionhawk Did any of the voters publish reasoning for or against?

2 hours later…
10:50 PM
NEW: Former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos has decided to stick with his plea agreement with special counsel Robert Mueller, his wife tells @ABC. https://abcn.ws/2on6VGa
lol, good call
Ah, I see the President is having a real one over North Korea and also I guess tweets count as official statements now for the record
@Unionhawk In other news,
BREAKING: NY Gov. Cuomo suspended Weinstein sexual assault investigation just as he raked in $25,000 from Weinstein’s longtime law firm https://capitalandmain.com/cuomo-received-25000-dollars-from-weinstein-lawyers-firm-as-he-suspended-probe-0829

@TimStone great, now he's talking in the third person

11:07 PM
The Trump administration is accusing hundreds, and possibly thousands, of Hispanics along the border of using fraudulent birth certificates since they were babies, and it is undertaking a widespread crackdown on their citizenship. http://wapo.st/2PNIf68
@TimStone must not be scared of Cynthia Nixon anymore

user15026
Loblaws is pulling out of buck-a-beer after Labour day which means only 2 breweries (smaller ones, afaik) are still doing it :P

@Ash it was such a dumb promise

@GodEmperorDune I'm taking it too seriously but your chronology is wrong. Wait maybe not.
@GodEmperorDune Yes you are exactly right.
I thought it had been suspended months ago, not in June.
My chronology was wrong.
(I don't think Nixon's run stretches back as far as early Weinstein days.)

Ehhh I was making a quick joke without reading the article

@GodEmperorDune Indeed, I often take things too seriously and I thought that's what you did :)

11:24 PM
@puzzlepiece87 i mean the trump admin stripping citizenship from latinos on the border (and ignoring documents that prove citizenship) is a bit more pressing
> In some cases, passport applicants with official U.S. birth certificates are being jailed in immigration detention centers and entered into deportation proceedings. In others, they are stuck in Mexico, their passports suddenly revoked when they tried to reenter the United States.

Coles (In Australia) resumes charging for plastic bags, expect people to bitch about because none of them have ever shopped at ALDIs (or Woolworths since they stopped a while back)

@puzzlepiece87 The vote is so far secret (which is troubling for internal democracy but whatever), but, the main things I've seen is based on feedback from members; that New York state was not in agreement on this, it feels opportunist, DSA endorsing an actual celebrity feels odd, etc

11:54 PM
@Ash I'm still trying to figure out how they expected this to play out tbh
Just out: The truth about Waymo... http://go.theinformation.com/4596b7125469ea51
Sounds like they'll need

Waymo time to work on it
/cc @Yuuki

@TimStone hue, a classic
@TimStone ugh, weird paywall

Ah yeah, my bad

Wait how can they have more rights than "Probably getting away with it"

user15026
@TimStone Considering how long it took him to have a platform at all, I'm kinda like "well this feels kinda on brand"
