One Toronto cop was so high, he allegedly called in a "10-33". Police code for "need immediate assistance". Hours earlier his colleagues helped raid a drug dispensary:

All
Cops
Are
Based in a system were their job is inherently about enforcing oppressive laws, so when we say all cops are bad it is less a comment on their moral self and actually talking about their role in this system, which is very fascist and oppressive by nature
i'm sure there are some good cops who are upstanding and ethical and trying to do the right thing always but they need to be responsible for thin blue line and police overall not being accountable
anyway i feel the "fascist, oppressive" part of the thing is more related to overuse of force which is still fuct but astoundingly still WITHIN the law, as opposed to stuff which is still blatantly illegal
and maybe there is something to "cops feel like they are above ALL the laws" as a systemic thing, but if cops break the specific cop laws and then go to trial and are punished, then that part of the system is actually functioning properly
New from me: Julian Assange privately told Sean Hannity's secret Twitter account to use "other channels" so he could tell him "news about (Mark) Warner," the Dem leading the Senate's Russia investigation.
It wasn't Sean Hannity. It was a woman in Texas.

The Trump admin has notified Congress that last year’s bipartisan Russia sanctions bill is serving as a “deterrent” and as such, specific sanctions aren’t needed at this time. From a State Dept spox:
@GodEmperorDune "I have information on Chuck Schumer, but I'm worried about security, do you have a securedrop?" securedrops the definition of the word wiki
@Popehat Don't worry, I'm sure tomorrow will be be…hold on *taps earpiece* We're getting word that Rep. Nunes has just accused the FBI of crimes under RICO
On episode 5 of History's First and Only Podcast, @Ugarles, @muhmentions, @kept_simple, and @fleeroff get into the death penalty, a very salty Clarence Thomas, gerrymandering, and Milo suing his haters.

Breaking - CIA chief Mike Pompeo tells the BBC he expects Russia to try and interfere in US mid term elections later this year. He tells me he hasn't seen a significant decrease in its subversive activity in Europe or the US.
@TimStone I actually saw a thread on this, searching
Tl;dr: it’s that media people assume white cis het man is “neutral POV” and therefore if you are going for “unbiased” then that’s who you go to for making coverage decisions
What @avflox and @Lollardfish are talking about is the best answer I've heard to "why is the NYT running so many pro-Nazi pieces." https://twitter.com/avflox/status/957799315816136705
And among the only good things to come from the manifestbro is that it introduced me to some ultra woke googlers and xooglers that put fantastic pieces out there

Fuck, they have now charged that serial killer guy in Toronto with 5 first degree murder charges and they fully expect there to be more :/
Yeah, it's just horrid. There are some scary, scary people out there and I dunno how they become those kinds of monsters
user15026
@TimStone I said to my husband that it horrifies me some that I am reading in the news something that would fit into my mom's favourite murder mysteries
I mean, if Putin really wants to throw a wrench at the US, he could try "losing" the election and then claiming the US interfered. In which case, I'd actually believe him.
@TimStone Standard disinformation technique. Accuse your opponent of exactly the kind of crap you get up to, spread distrust and a sense of 'everyone does it that's just how the game is played'
When the timer runs out, we will stay in the same position, because we can't get out. Still in ECJ, Customs Union etc. We will lose our seats in parliament and gain nothing. Everyone will still be angry, and Brexit debates will continue for the rest of our lives.
@Unionhawk I mean it seems like a natural pivot since Berkshire Hathaway does realty for some inexplicable reason and JP Morgan Chase or just literally Jeff Bezos himself could do financing
That said, having read the Bloomberg breakdown, if it does actually provide affordable care for their employees it's not the worst thing to happen. Looks like the effort is being driven by Buffett, not sure why he brought World's Most Punchable Financial Villain on board but I guess if you want to do this Swole Bezos has enough people in his warehouses to make it appropriately scaled
Who interfered in election? Critics of Trump, Kellyanne Conway says on CNN.
“Everybody who said Donald Trump couldn't win...Every anchor, every pundit who said, ‘This is over, it's a joke, he can't win, he can't govern’ tried to interfere in the election.”
UK politics are always amazing. Apparently the Ministry of Defence sold off 55,000 military housing units at a loss of over £4 billion, homes now managed by a private company owned by a tycoon named Guy Hands
All that time spent on the UI (which was valid, granted) and it turns out that it was, in fact, the climate in which a missile attack on Hawaii would be likely was what caused the problem
> According to a preliminary FCC report, a supervisor's recorded message included the phrase "exercise, exercise, exercise" but also mistakenly included the phrase "this is not a drill."
Like the assertion that McCabe violated the Hatch Act versus literally anything else is just so mind-boggling stupid that we are so screwed
I had like the smallest amount of hope before but if people believe that kind of stupid shit and are willing to voice it on that kind of platform we are done
Pack up America everyone
This senator once said a play about a gay high school football player would lead to children getting HIV https://twitter.com/va_gop/status/958137790486761475
Omg, a Treasury Dept spox has confirmed to @John_Hudson that the new Russian “oligarch list” was taken from a Forbes ranking https://www.buzzfeed.com/johnhudson/trump-administration-admits-it-cribbed-forbes-magazine-to?utm_term=.ysq5z1zXo#.nx507a78L

News: Trump has told aides he wants Nunes memo released as quickly as possible, according two people familiar with the matter, but has decided against doing so before the State of the Union to avoid obscuring what they hope will be a unifying message
JUST IN: In a room full of television anchors invited to the White House, Pres. Trump told @DavidMuir, "I want to see the country united, to bring it back from tremendous divisiveness," adding, "I will consider it a great achievement if I could make the country united."

Absolutely MAD story: FOI documents show the NSW government spent $100,000 running a public competition to name a new ferry. The minister then ignored the result and named it “Ferry McFerryface” https://www.9news.com.au/national/2018/01/30/14/54/ferry-mcferryface-wasn-t-public-choice-for-new-ferry-name

Wow. The SOTU tonight apparently contains the line:
"I believe the time has come to bring that investigation and the other investigations of this matter to an end. One year of Russiagate is enough."
About the US having a yearly "Purge" where nothing is illegal for 24 hours.
And so people kill each other because they can get away with it.
The series has been getting increasingly political.
The last one revealed that the Purge is a way for the elite to distract the general populace by letting them kill poor people or something.
I dunno, haven't really watched the series.
I guess the new one is a prequel or something?
Although given that the US is split into 4 timezones, does the Purge in California begin at the same time as the Purge in New York or are they staggered?
And during the Purge, there would presumably be no speed limits.

I've read some fun takes on that sort of thing where people instead of being terrible did like all this socialist style stuff they couldn't accomplish otherwise
user15026
Although in current America...I don't see that happening
@Ash I mean, left anarchist types set up villages and such now, whether to block a pipeline or with probably a nonzero amount of permission to shelter the homeless
The slightly cheekier direct action that DSA chapters have done (and ours should do) is brake light replacements, which both promotes safe driving and at the same time seeks to minimize police interaction
Plus you don't need to take over two blocks of green space and risk having your village broken up by the city to do it
