12:03 AM
Reports he killed his grandmother too

12:21 AM
yeh i heard that. also heard that he went too the school but
> The student body at the school consists of children in the second, third and fourth grades, according to Pete Arredondo, chief of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Department, who also addressed reporters. In American schools, those grades are typically made up of children ranging from 7 to 10 years of age.
and it was reported he's 18 so not sure how he was connected to the school
for those more versed in the US and the application of their gun laws particularly in Texas, if you was walking down the street with a gun towards a school, how likely are you to be stopped by police (and for arguments sake, lets take race out of it)

1:02 AM
@Memor-X I think Texas is open carry, so unlikely I'd suspect

@Memor-X if he was brandishing it, he would be stopped (I think) pretty much wherever he was walking. If he was just carrying, he wouldn't be stopped, probably.
Alaska's pretty fast and loose with guns too, but it's not okay to have them out among people.
By the time somebody noticed he was close to a school, I imagine it would be too late to stop it.

14 hours later…
2:42 PM
@Memor-X Can progressive politicians at least start talking about repealing the second amendment? I know a repeal would be something like 40 years away if the conversations started now, but it'll always be at least 40 years away until those conversations happen.

3:03 PM
@MBraedley I personally wouldn't go as far as repealing it. I think the main problem is that the current 2A is way too black/white in that it says the complete right to bear arms cannot be infringed. I would change that something in the style of "The right to responsibly bear home defense and hunting arms shall not be infringed"
You do not need an AR-15 for home defense or hunting. If you want to use a gun, you need to do so responsibly, meaning you need to undergo training and a background check, and your guns need to be stored securely

3:30 PM
@Nzall In what other democratic country do you have an explicit constitutional right to own and use guns?

@MBraedley Depends on your definition of "democracy" and what you consider to be a constitutional right, but Chile, Haiti, Mexico and Panama all have some form of constitutional provision that allows their citizens to own firearms
Gun laws and policies (collectively referred to as firearms regulation or gun control) regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification and use of small arms by civilians. Laws of some countries may afford civilians a right to keep and bear arms, and have more liberal gun laws than neighboring jurisdictions. Countries that regulate access to firearms will typically restrict access to certain categories of firearms and then restrict the categories of persons who may be granted a license for access to such firearms. There may be separate licenses for hunting, sport shooting (a.k...

I cant remember the guy that had that joke in a monologue as to why its the second amendment.

The founding fathers were sitting down to write the constitution.
- Ok guys, so what should be the foundations of our country?
* some guys in the back * Guns!
- Nah it should be free speech. So 1st amendment; Free speech. Thats done. What next?
* The same guys in the back, louder this time * GUNS!
- Okay I guess guns, so they will just STFU so we can work in peace. There, GUNS. Whats the worst that could happen.
There was an ad that was so great. A guy comes clearly to shoot up his place of work. But he has a musket. Aims at his boss. Misses. Then spends what feels like a half hour reloading.

With a caption saying: Guns have evolved since the writing of the consitutions. Why shouldn't our laws.

3:50 PM
@Nzall Each of those examples include regulation by legislation. Sure, you could add a reasonable limits clause to the 2A, but that's a half measure at best.

Fla. class president told he couldn’t speak about being gay uses hair metaphor actionnews5.com/2022/05/23/…
> However, Moricz had been warned that his microphone would be cut off if he made any mention or reference to the law that goes into effect in July or any reference to his activist efforts on LGBTQ rights. He organized a student walkout in March against the then-pending legislation and a similar protest in downtown Sarasota.

@Wipqozn Clever, but the fact that it's necessary is depressing. As is too much else at the moment.

@TRiG Yes. It's beyond frustrating.
Hopefully that student is able to find a more accepting place to live after high school.

1 hour later…
5:30 PM
@Wipqozn Really feels like anybody with half a brain will bail from florida when they can.
Kinda like why the bible belt is red AF now. Anybody that has half a brain declared it a lost cause and moved out

5:40 PM
@Fredy31 Easier said than done though.
Not cheap to just pack up and move, sadly.
> The gunman who killed 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school barricaded them in a single fourth-grade classroom, authorities said on Wednesday, as the deadliest U.S. school shooting in a decade reignited debate over gun laws.
> Ramos began his rampage by shooting his grandmother at the home where he lived with his grandparents. He then drove to the nearby school where he crashed his car and entered the building wearing tactical gear and carrying a rifle, authorities said.
> His grandmother survived but is in critical condition, and investigators hope she can shed light on a motive for the shooting. Multiple children were also injured, although authorities have not provided an exact tally.
Grandmother is alive... although I wonder if she'll wish she died :/
This is just so fucking tragic

6:08 PM
> The Facebook posts were the only advance warning of the rampage, Abbott said
> Ramos purchased two rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition days before the attack
Gee, Greg, that looks a lot like advanced warning...

2 hours later…
7:44 PM
> The Jan. 6 select committee has heard testimony indicating that then-President Donald Trump — after rioters who swarmed the Capitol began chanting “hang Mike Pence” — expressed support for hanging his vice president, according to three people familiar with the matter.
I thought I was past all possible surprise where Trump was concerned, but apparently not

7:57 PM
@MBraedley Yeah, I saw that mentionned. Just look at them try to blame Facebook for not calling law enforcement because someone post some cryptic hint that they were about to do something.
@BradC Crazy to think. On Jan6, if they had put their grubby hands on any elected official except the 2 Qtards in parliment, they would have literally killed them.
And I shutter to even think of what those images would have looked like

8:17 PM
@MBraedley There are 3000 guns sold in Texas every DAY
Many of them to first time gun owners
So you can't really use gun sale statistics or even individual sales as any form of advanced warning
Unless you somehow find a way to figure out if any of those gun sales involve people with a certain background. If only there was a way to check that

8:38 PM
@Fredy31 and yet, the GOP continue to defend themselves and court their vote. It's absurd.
@BradC Seriously, holy hell.

@BradC Uh...how is Beto the "sick son of a bitch" in this situation?
You know what's disrespectful to the families of the victims? Doing absolutely fucking nothing every time this happens.

9:55 PM
@Wipqozn yep. A politician making a political statement about shootings at the perfect right time. The whole gaggle of reporters followed Beto out into the parking lot for an impromptu counter-press-conference
Abbot's quote: "It could have been worse", even if perhaps strictly true, isn't likely to be much comfort to anybody. What a revolting statement

10:29 PM
@BradC ...I can't believe he actually said that, and yet I actually have no trouble believing it
