@TimStone Very relatable story.

I like the things that remind us the simulation is indeed crashing and we'll all be free soon

@TimStone Thank Zeus
Infinity ward to (finally) take a stronger stance against racism in games twitter.com/InfinityWard/status/1268297976901849089
I didn't look at the replies. I'm so proud.

1:03 AM
@TimStone lol:
at least they're consistent at doing this shit

1:15 AM
Love to have the rare Hitler byline in my paper
Oh hey DA Vance is on some bullshit again, asking Cuomo to use emergency powers to let him keep looters on bail

📺 @realDonaldTrump is no longer hiding that he’s a brazen authoritarian, so desiring of control and power that he’s willing to turn our once peaceful cities into war zones.

#AmericaOrTrump https://t.co/8Kn5Zi14Qx
Good videos too

@Wipqozn Oh shit. He's quoting Ecclesiastes. I've been quoting Ecclesiastes. The world is really upside down when I'm using the same words as Pat fucking Robertson.

2:41 AM
@TimStone and my twitter block list grows. Christ people are terrible.
> In a Wednesday afternoon news conference, Vallejo Police Chief Shawny Williams said the officer believed he saw the butt of a handgun poking out near Monterrosa’s waist, and opened fire “due to this perceived threat.”
Wow
Just wow

Open carry, while not legal in California anymore, is still typically only a misdemeanour not checks notes a reason someone should be extrajudicially executed
There isn't even the pretense that he was reaching for the weapon, just that the officer saw it 🤷‍♂️

3:15 AM
@TimStone didn't reagan do this one
checks
Oh no I think he did certain kinds of weapons maybe? Open carry gone as of 2012
Wait no he did do open carry ban, mulford act 1967

Yeah, the Mulford Act had the tinnnny loophole that it said you couldn't open carry a loaded weapon
And then somehow it took them until 2012 to go "Right so actually just generally"
But you can carry even a loaded weapon in certain jurisdictions
Because as with most things California is a mess
And also I guess there were less non-white people to discriminate against in the more rural areas where this is applicable

If I ran the Ohio National Guard twitter account I would simply not post anything for the next 3 months

3:33 AM
Based on that tweet from the other day I guess we know you don't now
lol god damnit I never made that connection
Of course
Amash and Pressley are co-sponsoring a bill to end qualified immunity
It boils down to "It'd seem pretty dumb if we said we were the Bureau of Prisons when we're not in a prison but seeing as we are good at messing crowds of people up we've been deployed to Miami and DC"

3:58 AM
I'm sure this will be fine and not go completely off the rails

4:38 AM
Wow! May I applaud @Wipqozn @Yuuki and everybody else in this room who are doing a great job at analyzing all the "fake news" we are being flooded with during these times. My only small request is that you change the name of the room to "Fake News Analysis" to make it easier for others to find this gold mine :-)
Or perhaps, "News Topic Analysis"?

5:02 AM
@Unionhawk @TimStone actually this was a weird roundabout attack on him?
To show what tactics he was using in the “psychological war” against America (this was pre-Pearl Harbor as you can see)

6 hours later…
11:29 AM
@Stormblessed If Fox has Biden polling above Trump, surely someone is realising how he's doing the totally wrong thing?

12:20 PM
@skillpatrol The name is a meme which is quite fitting:

@Mithrandir24601 I wouldn't exactly say he's doing the wrong thing. He's doing the wrong thing for us, but he's doing the right thing for his own base. His only real option is to flare up his base so they come out to vote in droves during the election, and at the same time try to suppress the democratic vote so they don't show up. Republicans have literally admitted that allowing easier voting would mean they'd lose, so they don't want to allow that at any cost

@Nzall I think they're point is that if Fox shows Biden polling above Trump, then that indicates even his base is starting to think Trump has gone too far.

Trump is doing the morally wrong thing. It's strategically correct for him, but it's abhorrent

but a lot of his base has also started to migrate away from Fox, since they think it's too "liberal"...which is just...yeah...I..yeah

because he has no chance with his base without further escalating and he's burned all bridges elsewhere.

12:25 PM
Like, the worst thing he can do right now for his own reelection is give in to the protests. It would disappoint his own base who wants him to be tough on crime, while not really convincing any democrat or even independent voters from joining him

He painted himself into a political corner that forces him to keep escalating the stakes in every. single. conflict.

12:39 PM
@Wipqozn yes, exactly
@Vogel612 And also this
Like, abstracting away from the current situation (um, sort of), it's wrong to murder someone. It might make you more popular with certain people, but it's still wrong

1:00 PM
@Mithrandir24601 fox is generally an accurate pollster surprisingly
Better than most somehow

@Unionhawk Huh, fair enough then

I mean there's no point of getting overinflated numbers for yourself that's how you get overconfident and lose Michigan

Reminds me of how (in the UK) the Daily Mail is known to be really biased, but then is the only newspaper who's good at science reporting

1:45 PM
@TimStone If those unmarked "federal officers" are really Bureau of Prisons, there is a lot concerning about that.
Prison guards aren't known for their measured response, nor for an emphasis on upholding of individual rights
Or, shorter, if they treat protesters like they treat prisoners, we're all f_cked
here's a WaPo article about them:
> For one thing, Watts pointed out, a civilian might refuse to respond to an order from a law enforcement official who doesn’t identify themselves in that way.
> “If I go out and I pull out a gun and I say, ‘Freeze,’ and they say why, I would have to say, ‘I’m an FBI agent’ or law enforcement officer or whatever,” he said, “because otherwise they would be totally in the right to defend themselves potentially."
And what's to prevent some militia bro from gearing up and trying to assert some authority?

2:05 PM
Nothing and they likely aren't bothered by that prospect
Incidentally being assaulted by police is probably better than being assassinated but actually sometimes these are the same thing

2:23 PM
Confirms what we already suspected:
guess it was part of the Congressional testimony yesterday
> Steve A. Linick, who was fired as inspector general last month, testified that Brian Bulatao, the under secretary of state for management, had “pressured him to act in ways” that he felt were “inappropriate,” the Democrats said. That included telling Mr. Linick that he should not pursue his investigation into whether the administration had unlawfully declared an “emergency” last year to allow the resumption of weapons sales to Saudi Arabia.

2:44 PM
> Every police department violating people's civil rights must be stripped of federal funding. - @SenSanders
hate to break it to you senator but uh
you could have saved 4 words and said the same thing

@BradC Or: 'reasons why civil servants shouldn't be appointed by anyone in or affiliated to a political party'

3:16 PM
@Mithrandir24601 FYI Fox is not a biased pollster actually
@Wipqozn fox polls aren’t of their viewers or something, they’re just normal high-quality polls

@Stormblessed Yeah, @Unionhawk explained. I just assumed they...well, wouldn't be high quality polls.

3:48 PM
Cincy PD: "Earlier today we reported that a driver of a black BMW drove toward demonstrators that were in the intersection of Plum & 9th St. This is a recording from street cameras. If you were at this intersection & believe this vehicle intentionally struck you please file a police report t.co/NM30os8J2g
Councilman PG Sittenfeld: "I was there. The driver and I looked at each other as he was speeding away. Everything about his behavior suggested intent to do harm. I spoke to the Chief about this earlier tonight, who told me they are doing an investigation."

4:17 PM
@Unionhawk Uhh feel like it would be an issue even if they unintentionally struck you but okay

watches a motorist drive through the intersection, stop, remain in drive, continue forward, stop again, continue forward, stop, then throw it in reverse and tear ass out of there "We do not believe the motorist intended to hit the crowd"

1 hour later…
5:36 PM
Also, I guess Facebook has been banning people for calling out white supremacists?
Zuckerberg is such a slimeball
I really wish I could just delete FAcebook, but it's my only form of contact with quite a few people.
damn you messenger

How many vox guys are going to post about how little they know about decades of police abolition writing today do we think
All of them?
Relatedly, The End of Policing by Alex S. Vitale is free on Verso right now:

6:12 PM
@Wipqozn Man, he is on a roll!

@TimStone Yyyyeeessss
Amazing

6:35 PM
Folks you love to see it:
> NOW: Mayor de Blasio appears at a huge George Floyd rally in Cadman Park, Brooklyn—his first time in front of the protesters—and hundreds boo him & chant “Resign!” and “Fuck your curfew!”
> Total disaster for de Blasio. My entire section of this huge crowd turned their backs on him. He could barely get a word in over the heckling. He gave up after about a minute and ceded the mic to George Floyd’s brother, Terence.

6:47 PM

7:08 PM
@Unionhawk amazing

How did they miss Covid in the first two autopsies?

@skillpatrol You have to specifically test for it, so it doesn't seem surprising that this isn't the very first thing they did

Right.

7:25 PM
Holy shit
Oh man @Wipqozn inb4d me
I feel terrible

So apparently Boris Johnson wants EU workers to come back and work in the UK
@fredley Rekt. Helps that I live in the same time zone (and province) as DeAdder
Nova Scotia has the best political cartoonists

@Wipqozn If only they had some sort of... cross-border work agreement or something.
That would have been so convenient

They need a mask on the Statue of Liberty.
Statue of Liberty *Justice

8:40 PM
> As Travis and his father Gregory McMichael attempted to head him off, Arbery turned and ran past the truck of Bryan, who filmed the killing, and Bryan struck Arbery with the side of his truck, Dial said.
My god. He must have been so scared.
Just hunted by these fucking killers

2 hours later…
10:25 PM
lol we did it folks, less op-eds from the NY Times

Ok so apparently the FBI is trying to tack on terrorism charges to people so remember the ONLY correct answer to questions is "I am invoking my right to remain silent"
(if you're not under arrest, "am I free to leave" is the correct answer I guess, and "I don't know" works pretty good too in some cases, but if the FBI asks you that's a whole different level since it's a crime to lie to them)
@TimStone lmfao they're processing so many unsubscriptions right now they people are getting put on hold

11:07 PM
@TimStone Assuming they're not lying, a rushed editorial process would certainly make sense. Having worked in a news room, when shit articles did get posted, it was normally because someone rushed it without running it past editorial.
Although the only time I remember that happening was during a strike, when the editorial department consisted of like, nobody, because it was a strike
Either way, makes NYT look terrible. Either "Congrats, you knowingly print trash." or "Congrats, your editorial process is worse than no editorial department at all."

11:38 PM
@Wipqozn Yeah, it's hard to tell but it sounds like there aren't enough English people wanting to do a lot of jobs previously done by non-English people, such as fruit-picking
(yes, there is a ton of irony in that)
> The U.S. Park Police denied using tear gas, yet acknowledged deploying a pepper compound, which the CDC and other scientific organizations list as one form of tear gas.

apparently bow and arrow guy is being charged with two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, one count of aggravated assault, and one count of threatening to use a dangerous weapon in a fight or quarrel
(he had previously been convicted of battery on a peace officer/fireman which is where "restricted person" comes in)
