Contempt of Congress is the act of obstructing the work of the United States Congress or one of its committees. Historically, the bribery of a U.S. Senator or U.S. Representative was considered contempt of Congress. In modern times, contempt of Congress has generally applied to the refusal to comply with a subpoena issued by a Congressional committee or subcommittee—usually seeking to compel either testimony or the production of requested documents. == History == In the late 1790s, declaring contempt of Congress was considered an "implied power" of the legislature, in the same way that the British...
> Presidential pardons appear not to apply to a civil contempt procedure such as the above, since it is not an "offense against the United States" or against "the dignity of public authority."
not 100% if it's talking about just the example of the entire thing itself. if the latter then they'll drag Giuliani kicking and screaming and Trump can't pardon him

2:44 AM
@TimStone say what you like about the New York Times being "fake news" or that they are making it all up. kinda hard to call The Australian Government "Fake News" for confirming that such a request was made

1 hour later…
4:05 AM
just popping in here to lol in general at this admin

3 hours later…
6:43 AM
Bojo Jojo's plans to avoid customs checks at the Irish border: Move the customs checks 5-10 miles outside the border

6:53 AM
@Nzall that counts as a hard border doesn't it?

@Memor-X It's called Refuge in Audacity

8:04 AM
@Memor-X does he have not-controversial tweets?

3 hours later…
11:13 AM
@Elva covfefe and hamberders

Made controversial by supporters and himself by pretending those were normal tweets

wait, the latter might be controversial because it came from him serving Macca's at the White House for guests

11:50 AM
A protestor shot in Hong Kong is in critical condition so naturally the President is tweeting out appreciation for the founding of China holiday
Police using their guns has historically been uncommon in Hong Kong, but the protestor was shot by a live round

@TimStone fuck, this was bound to happen ever since it was reported like a month or so ago that a cop fired a life round into the air

facedesks

@Stormblessed i just got that name
and if you follow it, their header image is Trump's tweet
though there is something off. i can't find such a tweet. so did they then delete it or did Trump actually make it up which if the latter...........

1:04 PM
@Memor-X the tweet is older than the account
So...?

3 hours later…
> Jury finds former Dallas police officer
Even though it's true that Guyger is no longer an officer, I don't like any possible misinterpretation that Guyger wasn't an officer at the time of the shooting.

Yeah, I'm just glad they actually convicted her
Keeping in mind that Facebook could easily sway an election given how much of the country gets its news from what shows up there and that's cool, cool

4:01 PM
@TimStone despite the ruling that the jury could consider Castle Doctrine, nice

Which is still incredible, because what

castle doctrine, in the case of someone walking into somebody else's house and shooting them
which is kind of reverse castle

Yeah but she thought it was her house so if you walk into the 7-Eleven drunk and say "I LIVE HERE" I guess you get to shoot whoever you want

I mean, I think I can see why someone would say consider Castle Doctrine but it's still dumb.

We were this close to having a ruling say, effectively, that murder is legal as long as it happens in a house

4:04 PM
We'd have to have a whole legal test for how you might accidentally think some other house was yours, good times

@Unionhawk I don't understand why I can't murder someone if it happens on private property, I'm pretty sure that's the third amendment

@Ronan It doesn't matter if it's not my private property. In fact, it should be legal for me to murder someone else on their private property.

It's a surprise duel

What's particularly dumb about this case, IIRC, was that the officer knocked on the front door after their key didn't work and then still shot the guy.

4:09 PM
@TimStone Online is apparently suspecting that this instruction may have been to keep it airtight from this kind of line of attack on appeal

Interesting

"please consider the castle doctrine in your deliberations [in the sense that applying the castle doctrine here would be beyond moronic]"

STATE DEPARTMENT HARASSMENT!!!

4:12 PM
If you read the actual letter itself, though, he is objecting to much more than just the dates

Put them all in jail, give the Sergeant at Arms the thrill of getting to lock up half the executive branch

"Where were you during the Great Trump Chaos, Grandpa?" "I was arresting the President's officials and hauling them off to the small cell in the basement of the House of Representatives!"

I think they can send them to any D.C. jail too if they run out of room, at least
Sure we'd have to litigate Congress' inherent contempt powers but it would be pretty funny in the meantime

@TimStone Even the actual rats think there's too many rats in the WH.

@TimStone lol

4:27 PM
looooooool Trump himself tweeted out that dumb "Impeach This" map after it made the rounds through his family?
Incredible

@TimStone is that the one that has DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) and Orange County all wrong?

Yeah it's not the right map at all
For starters
Secondly only one (1) person has to be impeached

My go-to indicators for electoral maps are DFW and Bexar County in Texas.
Bexar County contains San Antonio, which is far more liberal than people expect.

Granted, all of the major cities in Texas are more liberal than people expect but San Antonio is just small enough compared to Austin, Dallas, and Houston that people forget to color it blue when they make up fake electoral maps.

4:41 PM
Apparently, IIRC'dI ('If I Recall Correctly''d Incorrectly) earlier.
Guyger didn't knock on the door, the door was already ajar.

1 hour later…
6:10 PM
Using drones to deliver package? Genius. And by that I mean, the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

7:49 PM
> The mailers are labeled “2019 Congressional District Census” and inform recipients that they’ve been “selected to represent Voters” in Bozeman, Mont. The accompanying literature makes repeated requests for donations, urging recipients to send at least $15 to “help pay for the costs of processing [the] Census Document” if they are unable to afford an amount in the requested range of $25 to $1,000.

... that's a scam.

Doesn't that run afoul of...more or less any sort of election law?

I mean, that's not just sneaky donation begging, that's an actual scam.

Didn't Ted Cruz do this too? lol
Anyway this kind of "election material that looks like a bill/census/whatever" thing isn't new and it does seem like it should be illegal!

the FEC lacks quorum so there are no laws
it's campaign finance the purge folks

7:59 PM
chuckles Functioning government

(we as in DSA are operating under the assumption that they'll figure something out if DSA falls out of compliance, they'll throw together a quorum in order to throw a book at us)

"Somebody else did this wasn't punished" isn't a valid defense in the eyes of the law.
Which it shouldn't be, but also law enforcement should be required into the "somebody else" but well y'know...
3 mins ago, by Tim Stone
chuckles Functioning government

I'm just telling you why the FEC isn't going to look into this
aside from the fact that it might just be legal currently
just because it should be illegal doesn't mean that it is
not like ted cruz and his friends in the senate have any interest in making it so
and by his friends in the senate I mean all 99 of them

@GnomeSlice Using a massive 3D printer to build rocket ships sounds... neat and futuristic and stuff, but...
I dunno. I'd have to be persuaded it is better than the good-old traditional "make a tube of steel" approach
Guess whoever invested $140 million thought it was good tech
(Although, $140m doesn't sound like a lot in the world of rockets).

3D printing is good for when you don't want to have a massive production line dedicated for a niche component or object. But that's kinda exactly the sort of thing you want for building rocket ships.
As far as space goes, 3D printing would be useful when you're already in space and need a part or specialized tool but not so much when you're building a rocket to be launched, I think.

8:57 PM
@Yuuki Sure, you're not going to build 100,000 of each part, but, I dunno; do they really produce a cohesive and strong metal part, from individual layers laid down?

Where most 3D printers will fall down is multiple materials, I think.
I think most technology for 3D printers either takes advantage of melting things together, or using single material types and hardening them.
Even metal 3D printers basically melt metal dust into shape and let it cool. Same as plastic, just more specialized.

TIL that my polling place for this election will be...my apartment building.

@Ash Nice!

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 I move on Saturday, and just got the voter card for my current address. So I was like "hey I wonder if, since I am in the same riding and only moving 3km from my house I live in now, if that changes..." and it changes for hte better :P

user15026
It goes from "10 min bus ride" to "take the elevator"

That's fantastic.
