Alberta education minister apologizes after test asks students about 'positive effect' of residential schools: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/…
> The choices were: children were away from home; children learned to read; children were taught manners; children became civilized.
> "It appears it was some years back because it adhered to an old system that we have," Garbutt said.

> "But regardless, it's inappropriate, it's out of line. We have deleted it and we're going to be reviewing all of our course content to ensure that this never happens again."
Just wow
At least they responsed correctly, but the fact this question was ever in the system to begin with is just unreal

@Wipqozn Yuck
Didn't Canada already officially apologize for those?

@puzzlepiece87 Pretty sure. We've apologized for a lot lately about how poorly we've treated some of our citizens.
Since the way we've treated some of our citizens is completely fucked

Trump blasts GOP over "ridiculous" spending bill: "Where is the money for the wall?" http://hill.cm/aoiQFfr
ummm, because you kept saying Mexico will pay for it?
Artist places prison bars on Trump's Hollywood Walk of Fame star http://hill.cm/BvZAInr
> The artist said his art was “quickly damaged by a Trump supporter,” but he added that the same person appeared to struggle with removing the bars for hours “to the amusement of thousands of passing tourists.”

He said he attached the bars to the star by applying an instant-drying “industrial strength double-sided sticky tape.”
well, at least it didn't get destroyed this time

12:28 AM
@Memor-X This artist is a better person than me. I'd have accidentally industrial-strength had the bars sticking to my hands.

Franklin graham has a take and it is an awfully shitty one

@GodEmperorDune On brand. 100% shitty takes straight from the Lord the hole where his heart would otherwise be.

@puzzlepiece87 yeah it's not unexpected but it is still awful

Melania Trump's spokeswoman gets warning from Office of Special Counsel http://hill.cm/NVkXQaf
> "Two months after my inquiry, the @US_OSC has confirmed that yet another Trump White House staffer has violated the Hatch Act. This administration's blatant and repeated disregard for the law is astounding and unacceptable," Carper tweeted.

"At the very least, we should be able to trust that those who serve in the highest positions in our government will follow the law. Instead, this administration seems to promote a culture where showing that basic level of respect for the American taxpayer is optional," he added.

That's fair, it's unreasonable to expect the investigation to help except for the investigation part
I regret to inform you that the Whelan story is now news
NEW -- Ford dismisses Whelan's theory in statement to WaPo: “I knew them both, and socialized with” them, Ford said, adding that she had once visited the other classmate in the hospital. “There is zero chance that I would confuse them.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/gop-vows-to-move-ahead-with-kavanaugh-vote-if-his-accuser-doesnt-testify-monday/2018/09/20/a7132ee8-bcf5-11e8-8792-78719177250f_story.html?utm_term=.753a70504c37
Mostly because it's ridiculous anyone even asked her about that

:/
@TimStone yeah
New, by me: Free speech champion @jordanbpeterson sent a legal threat to feminist critic @kate_manne for, among other things, "referring to him as a misogynist" in a @voxdotcom interview https://www.thecut.com/2018/09/jordan-peterson-threatened-to-sue-feminist-critic-kate-manne.html
They know that truth is a libel defense, right?

He didn't know about lobsters don't bank on it
> He had told people around him that he had spent several days putting together the theory and thought it was more convincing than her story
I would like to point out that first, that's insane
But second if this is what the rumbling was about the other day, hoooooly hell

1:44 AM
Deleting tweets of my own that included his thread for that reason. This is something Kavanaugh allies had privately said could be the case for days but doing it this way, as an apparent reaction to Ford likely testifying, suggests a level of panic. https://twitter.com/jaketapper/status/1042908203804188672
It literally was, this is the dumbest thing. This poor woman, jfc

2:44 AM
@TimStone Or could have just not reported it in the first place.

3:21 AM
> Nikki Haley slams New York Times: They "knew the facts" about curtains and did the story anyway
Okay I agree that was silly but also uh we're like ten cycles past that now
I'm gonna need you to let it go

is this about how much it cost for new curtains in the Oval Office?

It was curtains for her private residence that were ordered during the Obama Administration

... wait, what? I think my irony meter broke: Two christian organizations are suing to stop Drag Queen Story Time at a public library, because according to them that would violate the establishment of religion clause? Because being gay is apparently a religion according to them?
Warning about the usual religious anti-gay bigotry, sources kadn and ny post
Oh boing-boing is slow and this was from 2 september

9:03 AM
@KevinvanderVelden I wish the old testament stated that being LGBT was okay
because in that time period it actually was

As long as you were male I suppose

Like, I'm fairly sure the Greek partook in it

I wish people would set aside bronze-age and older believe systems and get rid of arbitrary divisions like religion. They've long outlived their usefulness

@KevinvanderVelden Honestly, I don't think Religion in itself is a problem. For some people, religion can provide a sense of belonging and purpose that's harder to achieve in the same way through secular communities
The problems start when religions start to dictate what you can and cannot do

That's... that is the entire point and goal of religion

9:08 AM
and effectively start a parallel morality system next to the more evolving legal and social systems

Name one religion that doesn't do that

@KevinvanderVelden It wasn't as severe in earlier religions

(I suppose paganism which is more spiritual and I don't have a big problem with excepting the bits where they blatantly ignore science in favor of fantasy)
@Nzall Citation needed

yeah, that's true

Unless you're talking about religions that are all long dead

9:10 AM
I think I might be somewhat more towards those lines yes

Yeah those are all dead because they didn't create arbitrary divisions between people and got absorbed into the currently-alive religions

Essentially, back when you had polytheism (Roman, Greek, Norse, Egyptian etc), religion had a different interpretation. You had different gods to worship and prioritize, and each of them had their own dictates on actions you could do

(And also yeah sure you got me on a technicality because I didn't explicitly specify current religions)
I don't have any problem with dead religions because they stopped harming people

Global News: Canada Post rural workers to get hefty pay increase, arbitrator rules.
https://globalnews.ca/news/4470392/canada-post-rural-pay/
> A spokesman for the Crown agency says a preliminary review of the ruling indicates rural and suburban postal workers, known as RSMCs, could see a 25-per-cent hike in their wages, plus increases in other benefits.
> Arbitrator Maureen Flynn issued the ruling to Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers today after the two sides failed to reach an agreement on their own by an Aug. 30 deadline.
> The union had argued that Canada Post’s 8,000 rural carriers — most of whom are women — were being paid substantially less than their majority-male urban co-workers.

Any lawyer want to give their 2c? An Irish Car Insurance company's algorithm discriminating based on the day of the week you were born. They've some leeway with age discrim but these sample quotes don't correlate with age just weekday. All other inputs identical RTs appreciated

@Nzall Did they rerun the test or is this just anecdata? It could be other A|B price testing factors in the mix.

@iBrianCarter Yup, tried different permutations of most other options Age Sex Address Car Licence No Claims Occupation etc. Same pattern
Unless that is not what you meant

@Nzall Seems like it. Running 7 different tests only wouldn't prove anything, but if they've run it over and over with differences elsewhere and this pattern emerges consistently then it's probably a thing.

user15026
12:04 PM
@Wipqozn ffs Canada Post

user15026
@Nzall This is kinda how they work, yes.

user15026
@Nzall you can play a lot of "wel....technically...." with the scripture interpretation in this regard, if you want to. No one does because taking it at it's literal word means we can be mean to more people and be lovely judgemental asshats, but...yknow.

@Ash I mean, the scriptures also referred to the people of current-day Israel longing for Egyptian men, "whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses", but you don't see people quoting that all that often except as a way to make fun of quoting the bible

user15026
@Nzall Cherry picking the Bible is a wonderful pastime.

12:30 PM
@GodEmperorDune Yep

1:14 PM
@Nzall The really weird thing here is how Friday isn't the most expensive day

This is why state departments of insurance exist to approve rates lol
"what the fuck are you guys on about, yes you're mandated to charge adequate but not excessive rates but what is this"

I saw this on the BBC and thought you should see it:

May: EU must respect UK in Brexit talks - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-45603192
Honestly it's looking like this might end with a no deal at this rate
Because May seems to want free trade, which is a huge benefit of membership, so obviously the EU is telling them to fuck off
I heard this morning that EU members were just straight up calling politicians pushing Brexit as liars with what they promised to the public
Which, you know, they are

@Wipqozn It's crazy. They don't want to be in the EU, but they want the benefits of being in the EU, but then even if they get the benefits, they'll still have to follow EU rules, but then they don't have any actual say in those rules.

you mean like how the conservatives don't want to fund the NHS so they can continue their project of underfunding it so some company like Virgin Health can come in and privatize the whole thing and save the day
weird

@Nzall Its because they never actually wanted to leave
This whole thing was just a political move by the right to get votes. It's obvious they never expected the thing to actually pass.

1:30 PM
@Wipqozn Well, it's too late for that now, is it?

Because everyone involved in it jumped ship as soon as it happened. They knew how fucked the UK was.

Like, the UK literally has only 2 options: rock hard Brexit, or taking a huge credibility dive by asking if they can retract their invocation of Article 50 or whatever it's called

@Nzall Its really not, the politicians need to get some actually bloody courage and admit 'we fucking lied to you because we're pieces of shit, and all those benefits we said were just lies. Let's vote again'
And then you toss those politicians into the sea

Like, Article 50 was an afterthought in the treaty of Lisbon, they never thought a country would actually be crazy enough to invoke it

(Sorry, this particular part of the current news cycle pushes some buttons of mine, as a survivor of such things in various incarnations, so I'm just like "everyone's awful lets just burn it all down)

1:51 PM
Nah I'm right there with you on the burn it all down front, there are just so many awful, awful people and we're clearly not prepared to deal with them in a wholesale way

user15026
Nope, and they all get to be loud and gross and opinionated and it sucks because it makes us all kinda go "well yeah, of course it's this way" and like...for this thing especially, going "well yeah of course it's this way" is just....eeergh

This is wild—and a bad sign for Republicans, especially as so many of them lean on Trump in their races. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-09-21/internal-gop-poll-pelosi-beats-trump-in-a-head-to-head-matchup?utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&utm_medium=social&utm_content=business&utm_source=twitter&cmpid=socialflow-twitter-business
Supposedly an RNC poll shows Pelosi with a higher favourability than Trump

how
Like, honestly
say what you will about donald trump,

The question isn't strictly about either of them which I think makes the difference

this is true
a @Uni institute poll sample size of 1 has them tied though

They talk about it being framed by them but honestly I think it's the latter part of the options that's doing the heavy lifting

for different reasons but tied

I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!
Just. Fuck.

user15026
Indeed.

I am taking what little solace I can muster in that he refers to her as Dr. Ford, unlike the rest of the media that's been demeaning her by referring to her as Professor Ford.

So Hungary has just banned gender studies degrees and all of the you-know-whos are crowing about you-know-what while ignoring the salient part of a government curtailing academia. And Hungary is one of the number of governments that are becoming increasingly autocratic. Gender studies ban now is likely to lead to other bans.

The advice was that it's legally questionable, I assume!

@Yuuki Seriously
That's completely fucked and I have no words

6:11 PM
there is a story about rod rosenstein in the nytimes that smells fishy

@TimStone Lol. Someone put test data into prod

@SaintWacko reverse, actually
prod usually has safeguarded access, test does not

@GodEmperorDune Hm, could be I guess

Here, Whelan betrays knowledge of who the female friend at the gathering was and where she lived.
Ah, that is weird

I figured it was that a developer had put their email in somewhere to test a feature
And that got into prod somehow

@SaintWacko ah you're right, that is also a possiblity
either way, please git gud twitter
@TimStone almost as if kavanaugh or his bro knew exactly who was at that party

7:02 PM
@Yuuki false, cats spend some of their 9 lives to do it
@Yuuki wat
not enough time to slow down?

Not so much slow down but rather less time to right themselves.
Usually when they fall, they fall with their backs toward the ground.
The higher up they are, the more time they have to twist their body around.

@TimStone To clarify this isn't like "developers who work for Twitter", it's "literally anyone who accessed the API"

And then spread themselves out to increase drag.
And then land on their feet/belly.

@TimStone ok wtf

Hearing Bill Shine rolling out media plan to build public support for Trump to fire Rosenstein
🙄

7:04 PM
this is a "we forgot to check permissions properly in the API code" error, for a year and a half!

Hahah Classic Twitter! slaps knee

@TimStone congrats NYT, you played yourself

My colleague @masoodfarivar relays from source who was in room (with DAG when he made the comment): “I remember this meeting and remember the wire comment. The statement was sarcastic and was never discussed with any intention of recording a conversation with the president.”
Is this an attack on Rosenstein or the NY Times?
Why is all this scheming so half-assed?

i don't even know
@TimStone AND YET IT STILL WORKS

user15026
wait, what is going on

7:06 PM
i think that's what bothers me the most about this stuff

@Ash The NY Times published a story indicating that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein wanted to seriously secretly record Trump and Do the 25th Amendment based on people who had talked to people who read memos of the meeting
People actually in the meeting said that he was making a sarcastic remark
But that doesn't matter because that would be boring
@TimStone Details

the story seems to be a way to get support among trump's base for firing Rosenstein
firing Rosenstein is likely bad because as Deputy Attorney General, he is the only one in the executive branch who can fire Mueller and stop the Mueller investigation. So any replacement would have the firing authority

But with Lindsey Graham and Bill Mitchell both going against the story I don't even know!
Plus Trump's definitely going to fire Sessions anyway, so Rosenstein may or may not still be relevant

if congress wanted to, they could rehire or transfer the mueller investigation to under congressional authority, making it so it's not longer in the executive branch's power to stop the investigation... but chances of that are also unlikely

NBC News has now been told by a source who was in the room that Rosenstein did indeed discussing wearing a wire on the president, but he did so sarcastically. Former FBI director Andrew McCabe appears to have a different recollection.
McCabe get lost bro

7:13 PM
@TimStone yes, important nuance, a new Attorney General could also fire Mueller and stop the investigation. The current Attorney General relinquished that power to the deputy AG early on and trump was extremely pissed about it (and has been ranting about it lately)

@GodEmperorDune I can't remember if deputy department heads have to be confirmed or not.

@Yuuki even if they do, they can appoint an interim one without a confirmation

@GodEmperorDune Is that the case? Trump's administration has a lot of vacant seats both because he hasn't appointed them and because the ones he has haven't been confirmed, I thought?

It's mostly because they didn't appoint anyone

@Yuuki i mean i'm not an employment lawyer or anything, but right after inauguration they fired all the department heads and had deputies be acting heads or interim heads

7:17 PM
And/or the positions are still operational even if not "filled"
Have a 3D printer? Make your own Harriet Tubman 20s. The Harriet Tubman $20 Stamp: https://kottke.org/18/09/the-harriet-tubman-20-stamp (via @nycresistor)

Would this be considered defacing currency? I mean, I know people do similar things all the time...

That's actually answered!
> Adafruit did an extensive investigation into the legality of this project. Their conclusion? “The production of the instructional video and the stamping of currency are both well within the law.”

The clause, IIRC, went something along the lines of "if the currency is rendered unrecognizable".

anyway @ash some historical context here is that firing attorney generals in order to go down the chain to someone who would stop an investigation into the presidency is what Nixon did (the event is called the Saturday night Massacre) and what caused Nixon to resign rather than be impeached

And one could argue that it could still be seen as a $20 bill due to all of the other features that are not Jackson's face.

7:20 PM
Yeah, I suspect there's a very large chance someone refuses to accept one and then it becomes An Issue and we'll hear about it a few months from now
Unless nuclear war or whatever

@TimStone probably that colorado baker

user15026
@GodEmperorDune ah, okay

user15026
so basically, it sounds like Trump is doing this thing potentially?

@Ash yes, or getting scary close to it

user15026
(Also, augh this has so many echoes to times when America went "dear President wtf" and WHY ARE YOU STILL LETTING THE WTF HAPPEN)

7:22 PM
Yeah, it's weird because the President's Large Adult Son seems on board but not the other lackeys
A WaPo source offers an alternate context/explanation for Rosenstein's alleged remark: he was sarcastically responding to Andrew McCabe. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/mccabe-memos-say-rosenstein-considered-secretly-recording-trump/2018/09/21/f4aa9a62-bdca-11e8-8792-78719177250f_story.html?utm_term=.d99c8093fd66

@TimStone lol no wonder mccabe is pissed

@TimStone Well, the other lackeys probably paid just enough attention in history class to remember Nixon.

@Ash yeah it's also an excuse to go really insider knowledgey and political reporters eat that stuff up

user15026
@GodEmperorDune like this doesn't even SOUND like it was serious but sure lets treat it as hella serious so we can detract from the actual serious

@Ash right, firing rosenstein (or getting close to it) is also a way to knock the media off of the kavanaugh coverage and what seems like a resurgent #metoo, so it's a multiple birds with one stone thing as well

user15026
7:27 PM
@GodEmperorDune pretty much, it's the news equivalent of going OH LOOK OVER HERE A DISTRACTION

user15026
@TimStone I am confused

@Ash diamond and silk are very strange but also very popular conservative youtube stars
they are doubling down on the rape apologism

As you can see none of their arguments really make sense, exactly, but they're treated as serious people anyway for some unknown reason!

user15026
ALL OF THIS IS DUMB EVERYONE INTO THE SUN PLZ

@TimStone they just parrot the standard talking points
@Ash yeppppppppppp

@Ash They appeared in front of congress to talk about how Facebook was discriminating against them because they were getting fewer views

@TimStone I really didn't need a third mandated reporter issue this week.
Even if this isn't an actual mandated reporter thing.

user15026
@TimStone aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

@Ash We need to fund the space program so we can build rocket ships to launch the entire human race into the sun.

@Yuuki yeah, everyone with a PhD is a "doctor" but not everyone in that group is a mandated reporter
and even if dr. ford is a mandated reporter, that doesn't apply to things in your own life, nor does it apply to when you were 15!

Ontario high school students walk out over curriculum beta.ctvnews.ca/content/ctvnews/en/national/canada/2018/9/21/…

Rod rosenstein shld have been fired long ago for being part of the ‘resistance’ and not providing documents to congress in order to save his corrupt pals. NOW HE MUST BE FIRED.
"Ahh Attorney General Judge Jeanine has a nice ring to it"
It doesn't even completely make sense but it's what she's thinking

@TimStone she's still mad she wasn't nominated to the supreme court

She tried for the AG position first! That was a thing that could have happened!

user15026
@Wipqozn I heard about this, I am super happy the students are pushing back

user15026
I hope that it brings change because seriously the curricula rollback is STUPID and not helpful and damn dangerous

7:39 PM
> Ford has enacted a snitch line to report teachers who continue to teach the 2015 content.
what is up with the snitch lines

user15026
@GodEmperorDune oh yeah that's old news, there were campaigns to flood that with messages of "wtf dude no"

user15026
Like the dude just....*sighs*

@Ash yasss
like how the trump admin set up a snitch line for "crimes by aliens" and got flooded with UFO sightings

user15026
hahaha yeah

user15026
A lot of people are pushing back hard on this sex ed stuff, and I am happy to see students speaking out too, it's nice that they are aware of the issues too (I'm not surprised that they are but a lot of adults keep acting like this isn't something kids/teens would realize is a problem)

7:43 PM
it shouldn't have to be kids stepping up, the adults shouldn't have failed them in the first place but i'm glad they are

Saw @GenFlynn today. Discussed the victory plan to defeat @RepMaxineWaters. He’s a man of strategy and distinct honor. We the people are going to shock the country and reclaim our time.
That classic election strategy in which you hang out with the dude being sentenced for crimes against the country

user15026
@GodEmperorDune yeah, I am pissed it got to that point, I am pissed they didn't listen to everyone already yelling about this being awful and them making excuses about how its not that bad

.@SenatorCollins: "I was appalled by the President's tweet,earlier...we know that allegations of sexual assault are one of the most unreported crimes that exist so I thought that the President's tweet was completely inappropriate and wrong."
yawns

user15026
but maybe since they seem to be incredibly dense, maybe teh literal children going "we know what you're doing and it sucks" will help

user15026
@TimStone nice CYA statement there

7:46 PM
@GodEmperorDune lolsob

@Ash IT probably won't

@Wipqozn how soon until doug ford has another election?

Ford made it clear he doesn't care about democracy or the will of the people

user15026
@Wipqozn oh probably not, Ford is super good at covering his eyes and plugging his ears

user15026
He does what he wants how he wants, the whole notwithstanding thing just proved that

7:49 PM
@Ash Yep :|

@GodEmperorDune 4 years

user15026
@GodEmperorDune eons. (4 years minus however long it's already been)

@Ash did he actually invoke the notwithstanding or just threaten it?

user15026
@GodEmperorDune threatened

user15026
7:51 PM
(he then got an Ontario Court of Appeal decision that stayed the lower court ruling, so he "won")

The whole thing is pure nonsense
I'm open to the idea of reducing the number of seats, but you can't do it in the middle of a bloody election or close to one
Plus, you know, It's obvious Ford is just doing this so he can make the districts favour conservatives
Also that was totally an accident, but I like it
IF you're confused just look at the history. HISTORY.

user15026
hahahahah nice edit

Breaking news: Republican state Rep. Jim Knoblach has abruptly ended his re-election campaign as MPR News prepared to publish detailed accusations from his adult daughter of what she described as his inappropriate behavior toward her since childhood https://www.mprnews.org/story/2018/09/21/minnesota-state-rep-jim-knoblach-drops-reelection-bid-citing-forthcoming-mpr-news-investi

It is becoming abundantly clear that the whole Pizzagate thing wasn't just blatant slander but also clear projection.

@TimStone ugh what the fuck
@Yuuki yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
no wonder the GOP is so pissed at the media in general

Former first daughter Patti Davis was sexually assaulted. In a op-ed for Wash Post she shares her full story for the first time — and why she'll never recall all the details https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/i-was-sexually-assaulted-heres-why-i-dont-remember-many-of-the-details/2018/09/21/8ce0088c-bdab-11e8-8792-78719177250f_story.html?utm_term=.b8a41fd230ee

Let it never be said that Erick Erickson doesn't have stamina, because my god

He's been having a normal day online for like five days

He managed to work a Title IX take in there, which whew
Two different sources close to the WH are indicating the Rosenstein allegations could serve as a pretext to put the president back in a mood to fire the Deputy Attorney General. @Acosta

@TimStone all i remember is him shaking the can of soup
and it was an old man soup can too

That would imply that Trump doesn't even care and this is all a game to make him care again because other people think they're exposed by association
Which hilariously absurd and thus the obvious explanation

@TimStone remember how i said that the half assedness is the worst part? i am revising that take
@TimStone goddammit, occam

9:59 PM
It does make sense though that Trump literally does not believe he did anything wrong and people went along with it until it started looking like Mueller might maybe make a compelling case and now they're like "mmm sir maybe you did do some Crimes" except he tells them to shut up because he's going golfing
