> The ban specifically prohibits adding partially hydrogenated oils, or PHO’s, to packaged foods and foods sold in restaurant.
> "With the ban of trans fats what's being predicted is that we would save 12,000 people having a heart attack over the next 20 years," she said. "So it's very significant."
> What trans fats essentially do is increase levels of bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) and decrease levels of good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol), one dietitian told CTV News.
Starting a thread of various videos today in HK and Shenzhen as the world’s strongest storm #TyphoonManghkut wiping our cities. (Videos are not mine but collected from messages doing the rounds w WhatsApp and WeChat) https://t.co/FXU5ITrFqN
Holy crap, I saw some crazy rain/wind while living in Hong Kong but nothing like that
Likely some dynamic with the building there too but that's one hell of a storm
Trump has summarily revoked the visas of Palestinian ambassador to US @HZomlot’s wife & kids & closed down his bank account. I’ve never heard of anything like this. https://plo.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dc8b9112a35b636f565c0b3e4&id=a4d4a472c4&e=b34ae3785e
@Wipqozn Hmm, I haven't read yet so maybe it's addressed but I'm curious what those projections are based off of, given how "no trans fat!" has become commonplace just off of marketing
Like would it have had an even larger impact if that hadn't happened, etc
@Unionhawk lmfao he did this for the presidential primary too, fantastic
Okay @Unionhawk if you were planning on toppling capitalism I humbly request that you go ahead and do it
@dvergano 👀 NEWZ in this crazy New Mexico Observatory story. Officials say they closed+evacuated Sunspot due to an investigation into criminal activity in which "we became concerned that a suspect in the investigation potentially posed a threat to the safety of local staff and residents"
I think the incident detailed isn't quite as explosive but it does paint him as an extremely drunk teenager
"Bart O'Kavanaugh", lol
But yeah if you were someone with a history of getting blackout drunk, your claim that you definitely didn't do something doesn't hold up since at best you can't remember doing it 🤷🏼♂️
And that's not a defense, it just means your perspective is unreliable
user15026
@TimStone eeeergh and I thought what my Guamanian friends described when they had that hit earlier in the week was bad enough :/
Yeah as much as I miss Hong Kong I'm not gonna lie I am super stoked to not be living in the apartment we had there during this, we were floors 43-45 😐
Hoping the property damage is the worst of it, weather is just insane these days and it's crazy that a lot of people still don't care

Yeah, I can imagine that would not be awesome right now
(as a recap Tom Arnold has, of late, gone crazy with "exposing" Trump, and Mark Burnett created The Apprentice and reportedly withheld damaging tapes or whatever)
A southeast New Mexico observatory will reopen tomorrow after temporarily closing for mysterious reasons.
But while authorities have offered few details, one employee KOB talked to discussed possible circumstances for the closure.

It means that we won't get to read new mails with linus yelling at people, but I guess overall this is a very positive change for linus, linux and people sending patches.
@Ave an aggregate of smart takes i've seen on this: 1) it's a small step but a good step for people contributing to toxicity in tech to realize and admit the thing, 2) a lot more can be done, don't shower the dude in cookies for the first step of a long journey, 3) the "not understanding emotions" is entering the territory of blaming personal jerkiness on having autistic traits and that is not a good place to steer the conversation towards, for obvious reasons
and the classic 4) don't punish the behavior you want to encourage, so i hope for more but yeah this is a good first step
@GodEmperorDune I live by that "don't punish good behavior". I own at least a couple of games that I bought simply because the developers Did The Right Thing.
Even if the game itself isn't really my cup of tea
Tariffs have put the U.S. in a very strong bargaining position, with Billions of Dollars, and Jobs, flowing into our Country - and yet cost increases have thus far been almost unnoticeable. If countries will not make fair deals with us, they will be “Tariffed!”
@MadScientist or the alternative could, and hear me out on this, is not to deal with the US at all? like sure it would be huge if every country cut ties with the US but the more he pushes the more it could become a reality
Honestly I'm all in favour of the entire world cutting off all trade with the US and letting them just sit in the mess they've made, but all other countries would need to do a massive increase in trade amongst themselves to make up for the all the trade loss with the US.
> During the night, hordes of protesters shouted to be allowed inside the Ontario Legislature as they voiced their opposition to the bill inside Queen's Park as well, heckling Progressive Conservative legislators with cries of "shame, shame" until the Speaker cleared the public galleries.
Doug Ford should seriously be chucked into jail for this
"this" meaning trying to force this bill through after the judge said "No", since it's so obviously a intended to be a very direct attack on democracy
Anytime a politician tries to abuse their power to hurt democracy they should be chucked in jail as far as I'm concerned. We seriously need harsher punishments for politicians abusing their power. Absolutely no mercy should be given as far as I'm concerned.
Also, opinions like "chuck'em in jail" are the moments when I most realize how many of my views are a result of my father.
Since he's got very strong left leaning views, and so many of my values are a direct result of watching and talking to him as a I grew up. He was in a union too, and is very pro-union, so even outside of the government I saw a lot of views on the worker vs the boss.
Anyways, gotta get back to work, but it's always interesting when you realize how much your upbringing influences the person you become.
I mean it's not news but it's intended to be commentary on the recent stuff going on with statues and renaming schools et cetera in both Canada and the USA
@puzzlepiece87 Exactly. If you want people to vote with their wallet, you shouldn't just not buy the games that do stuff you don't want, you should also buy the games that do stuff you do want. Reinforce it both ways. Instead of making publishers worry about getting less money, they should try their best to get more money
@Nzall What you're saying is important too, but just to help you pick up on what I'm perceiving to be the nuance of the previous discussion, they were talking about situations where there are victims and the offenders are starting to make reparations. Sometimes they get discouraged off that reparatory track by initial (true) criticisms that their first reparatory actions are not enough - so you avoid punishing them with those criticisms so they continue reparations until hopefully sufficient.
Yours is similar but different enough that I wasn't sure if you were following (if I am indeed correct in how I was perceiving the nuance).
@Ash yeah it's great. I was just on the Bluff Trail yesterday, so I was looking at the website today reading up on the longer loops, and then I saw that.
user15026
@Wipqozn oh, neat, I was wondering how you found that out.
Okay this is the only Trump voter interview I will accept
Al Stapleton, a retired Teamster from Brunswick, Ohio, says he voted for Trump to kick corporate asses and drain the swamp.
But Trump has instead attacked unions, dismantled Wall Street regulations and ignored the threat to his $3000-a-month pension. https://politi.co/2OAvfju
Ah, this is why you read the article not just the headline
Newsweek headline: LINDSEY GRAHAM SAYS THAT LYING TO THE FBI IS NOT 'A BIG EVENT'
Interim reaction: skeptical but gfy Lindsey Graham if true
Actual article: "Graham downplayed recent convictions and plea deals. In particular, he said that former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos’s guilty plea to a charge of lying to the FBI was not that significant."
So actual informed reaction was "yes Lindsey Graham still spinelessly promotes the party line in all circumstances" rather than "gtfo with that"
(I personally would put Papadopoulos's guilty plea as a medium deal - he's a crook but not enough of a crook that anything is actually going to happen with him)
NEWS: @OrrinHatch just spoke to Kavanaugh and Kavaaugh denies being at the party in question per a Hatch aide.
Hatch told me kavanaugh is “honest” and “straightforward” and said after talkng to Kavanaugh the woman might be “mixed up”
Small little local story, but the whole thing is just unreal
Tl;Dr is that a ticket was drawn in a local lottery with two names in it, an aunt and a nephew. The aunt sued the nephew claiming she only put his name on it for good luck, and that he's not entitled to any of the money (the lottery originally gave each half).
The settlement appears to have gone with 25:75 split in favour of the aunt.
@Wipqozn Not too surprising. The nephew is simultaneously getting more and less than he deserves. More, because he should have settled for a token amount (50-100k), and less because, without further instructions, lotteries are supposed to assume equal shares between everyone on the ticket, which is what they did.
Tangent: I've recently noticed an increased occurrence of the term "heavy" in reference to someone's weight. Am I wrong to think that this is just fat-shaming by another name?
Or is it actually a more accepted/acceptable term?
President Trump's full quotes defending Brett Kavanaugh, per pool. "I think he’s very much on track. If they delay a little bit just to make sure everybody’s happy – they want to be happy."
Only hours after Christine Blasey Ford came forward to accuse Brett Kavanaugh of attempting to rape her in high school, the internet swamps had posted her address, cooked up conspiracies about her family, and attacked a porn account of a similar name https://thebea.st/2OxVKFU
@GodEmperorDune It's more about making Kavanaugh testify about this stuff under oath, because you have to hope that, like the article @MadScientist linked, nothing else comes forward as a result
@GodEmperorDune IMO McConnell would rather avoid the show altogether, I don't think they particularly care who gets confirmed so long as someone does and whatever path is easiest to get there
But I'm not sure if Trump is in the same boat, I think he picked Kavanaugh because he thinks he gets something out of it and he doesn't particularly care about most of their agenda items except "let me have money"
JUST IN: Mueller says FLYNN is ready for sentencing.
Yeah, whether he knew about this, the other rumours, or just assumed something would come up based on Kavanaugh's history, he likely wasn't happy with Trump's choice making things more difficult
@GodEmperorDune Kavanaugh's the one that's least likely to have a "crisis of conscience" on that list though, given that the apparent ties that he and Kennedy's son have to the Trump campaign.
@GodEmperorDune Right, but you can't bank on that. Obviously Kavanaugh's position changed because the shoe was on the other foot but also because it's what this President wanted to hear. It wouldn't even have had to be a conversation under more normal circumstances where the President wasn't a threat to their own party's system of power
Along with sending donation mailers disguised as fake legal summons, Ted Cruz has been spreading rumors that Beto wants to ban BBQ along with "he eats tofu".

@GodEmperorDune Me too - I think he's sincere, I just think 20% chance it's too difficult for him to overcome in the near future so he goes away instead (to some other project or without kernel leadership)
It's unclear what the hell she's doing here though instead of making a mess of things, it's unfortunate that the Board of Elections decision was overturned on a technicality
She [Novak] was "disbarred" because she [Neal] got (maybe?) fired
Ah, sorry, after double-checking Novak was merely censured for her Brady rules violation, a sorta-retcon that you only find out about when she returns to the show in Season 12 apparently
Trump orders DOJ "to publicly release all text messages relating to the Russia investigation, without redaction, of James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, and Bruce Ohr."
.@SecPompeo just announced the refugee admissions goals for FY2019: 30,000 the lowest number EVER. This is appalling. In the midst of the worst global refugee crisis, we should be welcoming refugees not shutting our doors to those fleeing violence & persecution. #RefugeesWelcome
Japan has been on the forefront of anti-immigration policies though. And they're a clear example of what happens when you internalize a culture of xenophobia.
The Air Force estimates that standing up and running a #SpaceForce will cost $13B over the next five years. I talked to @SecAFOfficial about that and other parts of USAF's Space Force proposal. #ASC18

@PioneerPress Even if true, teenagers! Frankly, I don't believe her. Almost 40yrs and now she self righteously comes forward to save us from a dangerous sex offender. This type of allegation seriously jeopardizes women with a legitimate claim, for who will believe them.

@GodEmperorDune Castle Rock = the town at the center of a lot of Stephen King books. There's now also a TV series by the same name about the same place on Hulu.
(to be clear, when I say the draft should be reinstated, I mean that we wouldn't fight so many terrible wars of choice if everyone was affected and not just 1% sent on impossibly high numbers of redeployments)
and there should be a balance between punishing vets for the shitty decisions of leadership by withholding medical care (a la vietnam) and making vets into political porn (a la trump)
@GodEmperorDune We should pay for all of their medical care forever. That would also help, if we had to pay the real costs of war instead of just a portion of them.
It's infuriating.
And if everyone's families were going, then Congresspeople wouldn't get away with only paying for substandard armor, etc.
@puzzlepiece87 i agree, but my concern is this incentivizes using private mercenary groups instead of the military (just like the private sector does with contractors instead of FTEs), because then we save money on benefits
(of course medicare for all means that everyone's healthcare is paid for and this dodge no longer is useful, so yay)
1/ In our Census case, we just got this email to Wilbur Ross that the court ordered the Govt to unredact. It shows that when Commerce first asked DOJ to come up w/a pretext for adding the citizenship q, DOJ balked b/c it was already getting bad press with "the whole Comey matter"
But Wilbur Ross also likely forgets things if they aren't written down
DC federal judge ruled today that the Dept. of Energy didn't do an adequate search in response to a FOIA request for docs about Qs sent by Trump's transition team in Dec. 2016 about staff who attended certain meetings about climate change https://ecf.dcd.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/show_public_doc?2017cv0779-20
@Unionhawk Exactly. Get the victim up here, have them endure tons of internet harassment, don't act on a word she says, mission accomplished, ready to vote yes.
