Strawberries with needles allegedly found in Tasmania amid probe http://bit.ly/2pdQD2W
i honestly don't understand why people do this

1:06 AM
@Memor-X i like my fruit like i like my pockets: full of sewing paraphernalia

> The ban specifically prohibits adding partially hydrogenated oils, or PHO’s, to packaged foods and foods sold in restaurant.
> "With the ban of trans fats what's being predicted is that we would save 12,000 people having a heart attack over the next 20 years," she said. "So it's very significant."
> What trans fats essentially do is increase levels of bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) and decrease levels of good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol), one dietitian told CTV News.

Starting a thread of various videos today in HK and Shenzhen as the world’s strongest storm #TyphoonManghkut wiping our cities. (Videos are not mine but collected from messages doing the rounds w WhatsApp and WeChat) https://t.co/FXU5ITrFqN
Holy crap, I saw some crazy rain/wind while living in Hong Kong but nothing like that
Likely some dynamic with the building there too but that's one hell of a storm
Trump has summarily revoked the visas of Palestinian ambassador to US @HZomlot’s wife & kids & closed down his bank account. I’ve never heard of anything like this. https://plo.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dc8b9112a35b636f565c0b3e4&id=a4d4a472c4&e=b34ae3785e
@Wipqozn Hmm, I haven't read yet so maybe it's addressed but I'm curious what those projections are based off of, given how "no trans fat!" has become commonplace just off of marketing
Like would it have had an even larger impact if that hadn't happened, etc
@Unionhawk lmfao he did this for the presidential primary too, fantastic

3:08 AM
@TimStone i always thought that immediate family was covered under what ever agreement a foreign diplomat has in regards to not needing a visa

I'm not sure, especially since Palestine is presumably a "special case"

3:20 AM
Okay @Unionhawk if you were planning on toppling capitalism I humbly request that you go ahead and do it
@dvergano 👀 NEWZ in this crazy New Mexico Observatory story. Officials say they closed+evacuated Sunspot due to an investigation into criminal activity in which "we became concerned that a suspect in the investigation potentially posed a threat to the safety of local staff and residents"

4:04 AM
@TimStone holy shit
@TimStone hue is this the book that corroborates that someone named 100%DefinitelyNotKavanaugh did what Kavanaugh is accused of?

I think the incident detailed isn't quite as explosive but it does paint him as an extremely drunk teenager
"Bart O'Kavanaugh", lol
But yeah if you were someone with a history of getting blackout drunk, your claim that you definitely didn't do something doesn't hold up since at best you can't remember doing it 🤷🏼‍♂️
And that's not a defense, it just means your perspective is unreliable

user15026
@TimStone eeeergh and I thought what my Guamanian friends described when they had that hit earlier in the week was bad enough :/

Yeah as much as I miss Hong Kong I'm not gonna lie I am super stoked to not be living in the apartment we had there during this, we were floors 43-45 😐
Hoping the property damage is the worst of it, weather is just insane these days and it's crazy that a lot of people still don't care

user15026
4:22 AM
Yeah, I can imagine that would not be awesome right now

4:46 AM
I uhh, yeah 🤔
(as a recap Tom Arnold has, of late, gone crazy with "exposing" Trump, and Mark Burnett created The Apprentice and reportedly withheld damaging tapes or whatever)

5:01 AM
A southeast New Mexico observatory will reopen tomorrow after temporarily closing for mysterious reasons. But while authorities have offered few details, one employee KOB talked to discussed possible circumstances for the closure. MORE: https://www.kob.com/albuquerque-news/sunspot-employee-calls-facility-breeding-ground-for-crime/5072951/?cat=500 https://t.co/7WDFeU6j3x
It's a video, with obfuscated voice!
(tl;dw: equipment seems to just be carted off and pawned and some really expensive stuff went missing last month)

@TimStone umm wat

🤷
This is the new normal I guess

@TimStone to aliens

Much like that Blue Lives Matter tweet that's just like straight up pro-serial killer CBP officer

@TimStone i think hollywood was like this the whole time, it's just now that someone blabs it on social media

5:08 AM
Doesn't make any sense why you'd go there but they did!

@GodEmperorDune I can't 🤷

@TimStone dat first reply

lol yes

2 hours later…
That's, good? I think

Ave
It means that we won't get to read new mails with linus yelling at people, but I guess overall this is a very positive change for linus, linux and people sending patches.

@Ave an aggregate of smart takes i've seen on this: 1) it's a small step but a good step for people contributing to toxicity in tech to realize and admit the thing, 2) a lot more can be done, don't shower the dude in cookies for the first step of a long journey, 3) the "not understanding emotions" is entering the territory of blaming personal jerkiness on having autistic traits and that is not a good place to steer the conversation towards, for obvious reasons
and the classic 4) don't punish the behavior you want to encourage, so i hope for more but yeah this is a good first step

Ave
some people don't like it, but I personally think that this is a positive change too

@GodEmperorDune I live by that "don't punish good behavior". I own at least a couple of games that I bought simply because the developers Did The Right Thing.
Even if the game itself isn't really my cup of tea

Tariffs have put the U.S. in a very strong bargaining position, with Billions of Dollars, and Jobs, flowing into our Country - and yet cost increases have thus far been almost unnoticeable. If countries will not make fair deals with us, they will be “Tariffed!”
This is not going to end well, and it looks like he'll go through with the additional tariffs on China

10:40 AM
It's not at all. The man's completely unstable.

11:01 AM
@MadScientist or the alternative could, and hear me out on this, is not to deal with the US at all? like sure it would be huge if every country cut ties with the US but the more he pushes the more it could become a reality

@Memor-X I don't think you can change trade this drastically, but tariffs certainly will shift around some parts to countries with lower tariffs

11:29 AM
Honestly I'm all in favour of the entire world cutting off all trade with the US and letting them just sit in the mess they've made, but all other countries would need to do a massive increase in trade amongst themselves to make up for the all the trade loss with the US.
It wouldn't be easy
or even possible for that matte
Considering just how huge the US economy is

11:49 AM
Speaking of Trump
> During the night, hordes of protesters shouted to be allowed inside the Ontario Legislature as they voiced their opposition to the bill inside Queen's Park as well, heckling Progressive Conservative legislators with cries of "shame, shame" until the Speaker cleared the public galleries.
Doug Ford should seriously be chucked into jail for this
"this" meaning trying to force this bill through after the judge said "No", since it's so obviously a intended to be a very direct attack on democracy
Anytime a politician tries to abuse their power to hurt democracy they should be chucked in jail as far as I'm concerned. We seriously need harsher punishments for politicians abusing their power. Absolutely no mercy should be given as far as I'm concerned.

He's outright said that he doesn't think there should be judicial checks on the government

Yuuuuuup

12:13 PM
Also, opinions like "chuck'em in jail" are the moments when I most realize how many of my views are a result of my father.
Since he's got very strong left leaning views, and so many of my values are a direct result of watching and talking to him as a I grew up. He was in a union too, and is very pro-union, so even outside of the government I saw a lot of views on the worker vs the boss.
Anyways, gotta get back to work, but it's always interesting when you realize how much your upbringing influences the person you become.

@GodEmperorDune @Ash Near the bottom, at the "Renaming Indian Hill Loop to Mi’kmaw Hill Loop" section, is a perfect example of how any situation with "welp, turns out this name is offensive" should go. FIgured you two would appreciate that. Basically 1) Welp, we really should change that 2) Contact the leaders of the community who are the naming scheme is offensive towards (or whatever) to get their input 3) Listen to their input 4) ??? 5) PROFIT!
also applies to statues, et cetera
I totally posted this in the wrong room
I mean it's not news but it's intended to be commentary on the recent stuff going on with statues and renaming schools et cetera in both Canada and the USA
4 messages moved from The Bridge
There we go
Anyways, the government and communities currently debating about statues and naming should really look at situations like this as an example

@Wipqozn IMHO, it fits squarely into this room, because it's an opinion on political decisions.

1:56 PM
@Nzall Yes

I mean, I think by now we established that this room is for news, politics and discussions on either

@GodEmperorDune I mean, if we're going back to tropes, then it's obviously Barron

@Unionhawk You're only truly American if you can trace your ancestry back to 12th century Britain.

@TimStone Tbf it's the Buffalo Bills.

user15026
2:13 PM
@Wipqozn yes! This is how you should do the thing.

@puzzlepiece87 he’s so good at the cyber

@Nzall That's more like rewarding good behavior than not punishing it...

@puzzlepiece87 Exactly. If you want people to vote with their wallet, you shouldn't just not buy the games that do stuff you don't want, you should also buy the games that do stuff you do want. Reinforce it both ways. Instead of making publishers worry about getting less money, they should try their best to get more money

Yeah but I already have enough problems with games in my library that I don't play.

@Nzall What you're saying is important too, but just to help you pick up on what I'm perceiving to be the nuance of the previous discussion, they were talking about situations where there are victims and the offenders are starting to make reparations. Sometimes they get discouraged off that reparatory track by initial (true) criticisms that their first reparatory actions are not enough - so you avoid punishing them with those criticisms so they continue reparations until hopefully sufficient.
Yours is similar but different enough that I wasn't sure if you were following (if I am indeed correct in how I was perceiving the nuance).

2:27 PM
@puzzlepiece87 Oh, okay, like that

@puzzlepiece87 I love the nuclear, the devastation.

@Ash yeah it's great. I was just on the Bluff Trail yesterday, so I was looking at the website today reading up on the longer loops, and then I saw that.

user15026
@Wipqozn oh, neat, I was wondering how you found that out.

@Yuuki So really it's more like a Comics-ghazi because it's mostly flash and little substance?

@puzzlepiece87 I suppose. It's probably just Gamergate people trying to stir up trouble.

@Yuuki Yup true.

I still feel incredibly out of place being on Quesada's side though.

Even Reason magazine posts a decent opinion once in a while.

3:33 PM
pls to comicsgate into the sea so I don't have to deal with this feeling anymore

@Yuuki yeah it gets much worse than that

@GodEmperorDune Yeah, I read the /r/SubredditDrama post and didn't feel it was appropriate to mention the other stuff linked.
Because it's some terribly inappropriate shit.
And horrible.

comicsgate people have started making "their own comics" that are basically a cross between white supremacy and male gaze

@GodEmperorDune Oh, is this like that whole Hugo awards thing where they basically plagiarized one of the nominees but also threw in alt-right stuff?

@Yuuki i think there is a captain america knockoff with a confederate flag instead

3:40 PM
wewboy

@GodEmperorDune lmao

Okay this is the only Trump voter interview I will accept
Al Stapleton, a retired Teamster from Brunswick, Ohio, says he voted for Trump to kick corporate asses and drain the swamp. But Trump has instead attacked unions, dismantled Wall Street regulations and ignored the threat to his $3000-a-month pension. https://politi.co/2OAvfju
Solely based on the admission of being hornswoggled

5:53 PM
Ah, this is why you read the article not just the headline
Newsweek headline: LINDSEY GRAHAM SAYS THAT LYING TO THE FBI IS NOT 'A BIG EVENT'
Interim reaction: skeptical but gfy Lindsey Graham if true
Actual article: "Graham downplayed recent convictions and plea deals. In particular, he said that former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos’s guilty plea to a charge of lying to the FBI was not that significant."

So actual informed reaction was "yes Lindsey Graham still spinelessly promotes the party line in all circumstances" rather than "gtfo with that"
(I personally would put Papadopoulos's guilty plea as a medium deal - he's a crook but not enough of a crook that anything is actually going to happen with him)

@TimStone Solely based on the presence of the word “hornswoggled”.

Yes

6:22 PM
NEWS: @OrrinHatch just spoke to Kavanaugh and Kavaaugh denies being at the party in question per a Hatch aide. Hatch told me kavanaugh is “honest” and “straightforward” and said after talkng to Kavanaugh the woman might be “mixed up”
Oh wow they're now going with the "It was Bart O'Kavanaugh!" defense
Also Hatch vouched for Rob Porter so 🤷

6:34 PM
Chase the Ace court battle between aunt and nephew ends in settlement: cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/…
Small little local story, but the whole thing is just unreal
Tl;Dr is that a ticket was drawn in a local lottery with two names in it, an aunt and a nephew. The aunt sued the nephew claiming she only put his name on it for good luck, and that he's not entitled to any of the money (the lottery originally gave each half).
The settlement appears to have gone with 25:75 split in favour of the aunt.

6:49 PM
@Wipqozn Not too surprising. The nephew is simultaneously getting more and less than he deserves. More, because he should have settled for a token amount (50-100k), and less because, without further instructions, lotteries are supposed to assume equal shares between everyone on the ticket, which is what they did.

@Wipqozn Judging the aunt so much right now, so much.

@puzzlepiece87 All of Nova Scotia has been doing this ever since the story first broke.

@puzzlepiece87 There are two things that determine whether unconditional love is in fact conditional: 1) coming out as LGBT and 2) money.

7:11 PM
Tangent: I've recently noticed an increased occurrence of the term "heavy" in reference to someone's weight. Am I wrong to think that this is just fat-shaming by another name?
Or is it actually a more accepted/acceptable term?

user15026
As always, depends on context

user15026
Usually it's a polite way to not say they're fat

President Trump's full quotes defending Brett Kavanaugh, per pool. "I think he’s very much on track. If they delay a little bit just to make sure everybody’s happy – they want to be happy."
He's probably so happy we stopped talking negatively about him for a few days

7:41 PM
@TimStone So... wait for people to stop paying attention to Kavanaugh and then confirm him while no one's looking?
I guess that's been the working strategy, just wait for things to fall out of media attention.

How can I place a prop bet on Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Ben Sasse, Jeff Flake, and Joe Manchin voting to confirm

@Yuuki Nah they're positioning themselves to handle it "by the book" instead of the "terrible mishandling by Democrats"
So they'll interview them and find a way to shrug it off and maybe confirm him a day or few late

8:00 PM
Quote From Man Sued: “I hope he fucking sues me”

@Unionhawk oh Elon
Unrelated, this is why we can’t have nice things
Only hours after Christine Blasey Ford came forward to accuse Brett Kavanaugh of attempting to rape her in high school, the internet swamps had posted her address, cooked up conspiracies about her family, and attacked a porn account of a similar name https://thebea.st/2OxVKFU
Aaaaaaand the hurricane floodwaters are now full of shit
Just in — at least one hog poop lagoon has breached due to flooding from Hurricane Florence

8:19 PM
@GodEmperorDune Jeez, that one picture with all those dead pigs.
> "What's he going to do, stab me?" - Stab victim

REFRANCE LOCATED

@Unionhawk all of these stories are made better by adding elonsFaceAsHeDidntInhale.jpg

Collins: "If Judge Kavanaugh has lied about what has happened, that would be disqualifying."

@TimStone and yet she still will vote for him

Non-zero chance they'll end up yanking his nomination and replacing him, I doubt McConnell seriously wants to bring them in under oath
It sounds good but it's quite a risk
I mean McConnell didn't want him to begin with, sooo 🤷

8:24 PM
GOP has no problem throwing Professor Ford under the bus in a televised committee hearing though

@GodEmperorDune wtf is wrong with people

That might actually finish him off, if there is anything to it

@GodEmperorDune It's more about making Kavanaugh testify about this stuff under oath, because you have to hope that, like the article @MadScientist linked, nothing else comes forward as a result
Should have gone with Kethledge 🤷

@TimStone that assumes that the GOP cares about him lying under oath and dems being able to ask good follow up questions

8:29 PM
@TimStone I wish you were right. I think Trump nailed it, actually.
Manchin, Jones, etc. just want an excuse to be able to vote yes.

@GodEmperorDune IMO McConnell would rather avoid the show altogether, I don't think they particularly care who gets confirmed so long as someone does and whatever path is easiest to get there
But I'm not sure if Trump is in the same boat, I think he picked Kavanaugh because he thinks he gets something out of it and he doesn't particularly care about most of their agenda items except "let me have money"
JUST IN: Mueller says FLYNN is ready for sentencing.

@TimStone yeah he didn't want this from the beginning

Yeah, whether he knew about this, the other rumours, or just assumed something would come up based on Kavanaugh's history, he likely wasn't happy with Trump's choice making things more difficult

@TimStone Trump gets a "get out of jail free" card if Kavanaugh is confirmed.
That's the something that he gets out of it.

@TimStone (Specifically delayed so that nothing is given away until after the election)

8:37 PM
@Yuuki Exactly.

@Yuuki ehhhh he'd probably get the same from anyone on the heritage list of judges that want to do standard GOP policy things

@Yuuki Something along those lines would be my guess

@GodEmperorDune Kavanaugh's the one that's least likely to have a "crisis of conscience" on that list though, given that the apparent ties that he and Kennedy's son have to the Trump campaign.

@GodEmperorDune This is tricky because I'm not sure unfettered executive power is a universal happy path in those circles
Much easier to retain control of the Senate, arguably

@TimStone unfettered executive power while a republican is in charge

@puzzlepiece87 yeah we had a bit of discussion about this last night
i mean it is a big deal so more discussion is great, just want to provide a reference for anyone who missed the points raised earlier

@GodEmperorDune Oops! Thanks!
I do my best not to re-post news but I forgot about that.
Congrats, I know you work on improving toxicity in tech

@GodEmperorDune Right, but you can't bank on that. Obviously Kavanaugh's position changed because the shoe was on the other foot but also because it's what this President wanted to hear. It wouldn't even have had to be a conversation under more normal circumstances where the President wasn't a threat to their own party's system of power

You must be happy to see this.
Do you think he'll ultimately return?
I'm at 80% return 20% leave

@puzzlepiece87 dabble and follow people that do the real work, but close :D

8:47 PM
@TimStone Oh wait, this was referred to prosecutors?

@TimStone i've been seeing some of the comments this FEMA admin has made and whew

Ah yeah
Love to be a grifter and an asshole

i've held back on posting them to this room because they are basically shitposts
checking all the racism and misogyny boxes

@GodEmperorDune If we prohibit shitposts, I can't post any Trump tweets anymore

Along with sending donation mailers disguised as fake legal summons, Ted Cruz has been spreading rumors that Beto wants to ban BBQ along with "he eats tofu".

8:49 PM
@MadScientist lol
@Yuuki BBQ tofu is great tho

Which is odd because Cruz's wife is vegetarian but I guess he's never shied away from throwing his family under the bus.
@GodEmperorDune And Texas grows a lot of soybean.

@MadScientist I wouldn't be against this xD

It's almost as if Cruz knows nothing about the state he's supposed to represent.

(Just because lying liars gonna lie)

@puzzlepiece87 i hope he's sincere and comes back, maybe encourages his fans to do better

8:51 PM
@Yuuki Or will say and do anything to stay in power.

@Yuuki i mean he's from the bay area originally, right?
then fled after that thing in the 70s

lol
Diane Neal of Law and Order: SVU is officially going to be on the ballot in NY-19 http://www.recordonline.com/news/20180917/actress-diane-neal-wins-appeal-to-run-against-faso-delgado

@GodEmperorDune Me too - I think he's sincere, I just think 20% chance it's too difficult for him to overcome in the near future so he goes away instead (to some other project or without kernel leadership)

🙄

@TimStone i'd vote for her or stephanie march
the other ADAs were ehhhh

8:55 PM
@GodEmperorDune I should make that some time. Tofu is great for absorbing flavors.

@Yuuki it really is

It's unclear what the hell she's doing here though instead of making a mess of things, it's unfortunate that the Board of Elections decision was overturned on a technicality

The issue is that basically only source of good tofu recipes I can get is my mom because every tofu recipe online assumes you're vegetarian.

(she had more invalid signatures than valid ones)

@TimStone i forget why her character left the show... was it for crimes?
writers, you can do better

8:59 PM
She [Novak] was "disbarred" because she [Neal] got (maybe?) fired
Ah, sorry, after double-checking Novak was merely censured for her Brady rules violation, a sorta-retcon that you only find out about when she returns to the show in Season 12 apparently

yeah it was going to bother me so i looked it up as well

9:33 PM
Japan is shaping up to be a pretty serious case study in what happens when you have severely limited immigration in a developed nation.

Trump orders DOJ "to publicly release all text messages relating to the Russia investigation, without redaction, of James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, and Bruce Ohr."

@GodEmperorDune that's going to backfire just like any of the previous releases of any information related to the probe

when you're definitely not trying to distract the media from a mess with your SCOTUS nominee

> "So did you get that copy of the pee tape I attached in my last e-mail?"

the "without redaction" part could cause some trouble

9:40 PM
@GodEmperorDune Do we already have the other pages unredacted, or?

@TimStone i don't know if everything was released or just samples

I'd have to check, I already had a headache before this but now that we're in Devin Nunes territory it's getting worse

@TimStone just wait for cucker's take
@MadScientist oh it most definitely will cause more problems than it solves but this admin does't really plan ahead for such things
he also might be mad about the flynn sentencing
or the manafort plea

What would be a better anti-Cruz campaign strategy: publicizing Trump's criticisms of Cruz or publicizing Cruz's criticisms of Trump?

Nah this is what Nunes was asking for because he's dumb as hell

9:45 PM
The second strategy sounds kinda dumb until you think about the type of people who would vote Cruz.

@Yuuki publicizing that your opponent looks great shirtless and was in a band when he was younger
aka vote BAEto

Right now, I think Cruz supporters are less Cruz supporters than Trump supporters.
So maybe publicizing Cruz insulting Trump might cause them to not vote for him.
But who knows.

@TimStone yep, 100% collateral damage and self owns then
RIP sources and methods
Source confirms that Ford and Kavanaugh will be invited to a public hearing.

Featuring a cameo by 1 degree of Kevin Bacon

@TimStone hollywood, wut u doing

9:58 PM
@MadScientist Sadly, it discourages additional informants from coming forward :(
I'd say it's more damaging than schadenfreude

.@SecPompeo just announced the refugee admissions goals for FY2019: 30,000 the lowest number EVER. This is appalling. In the midst of the worst global refugee crisis, we should be welcoming refugees not shutting our doors to those fleeing violence & persecution. #RefugeesWelcome

@TimStone goddammit white supremacists

The second: a letter from an inmate to family members describing how to smuggle drugs through a popular book donation program

@GodEmperorDune Now scheduled for Monday, assuming nothing happens in the interim

You will note that the letter does not in fact describe these things

10:03 PM
This is what happens when you stoke anti-immigrant sentiments.

@Unionhawk this is about smuggling books though

Japan is currently scrambling to get young adults to have kids.

because the jail is being jerks about which books are allowed in and which are not
@Yuuki but economic reality is undermining this iirc and young couples are not pairing up

@GodEmperorDune Yeah, was about to mention that capitalism is not cooperating.
Every other developed nation subsidizes their declining birth rates with immigration.

@Yuuki germany tried to supplement with refugees and the leading party is in a shambles now

10:07 PM
Japan has been on the forefront of anti-immigration policies though. And they're a clear example of what happens when you internalize a culture of xenophobia.

@GodEmperorDune it's not like we intentionally did that

@TimStone If you close your eyes you can actually see him tilting his head and going "Christine...Ford? Christine Ford. Hmm, I don't recall that name"

@TimStone -1, Kavanaugh would pronounce Ford incorrectly the first time.

@MadScientist nope, from what i've heard its the AFD ruining long term policy for a shot at short term power

@GodEmperorDune the AfD is quite noisy and does manage to steer the current discussion. But they're not in power, and likely won't be

10:10 PM
i hope so

The Air Force estimates that standing up and running a #SpaceForce will cost $13B over the next five years. I talked to @SecAFOfficial about that and other parts of USAF's Space Force proposal. #ASC18 https://www.defensenews.com/digital-show-dailies/air-force-association/2018/09/17/air-force-secretary-space-force-will-come-with-13b-in-added-costs/
SPACE FORCE

@TimStone oh i thought that was the newest salesforce acquisition that dealt with spaces vs tabs

lol

@TimStone also sneaky of them to do a 5 year estimate instead of the standard 10 so it seems cheaper

@PioneerPress Even if true, teenagers! Frankly, I don't believe her. Almost 40yrs and now she self righteously comes forward to save us from a dangerous sex offender. This type of allegation seriously jeopardizes women with a legitimate claim, for who will believe them.
Ah well
You know, having no stake in the game as a state senator one might simply not comment on the issue
But hahah this is 2018 time to go all in

10:17 PM
@TimStone What does "even if true, teenagers!" even mean?!

Sexual assault is nbd if you're young of course

@Yuuki nothing good

WHOMST AMONGST US (except the non-rapists)

@TimStone who tf is this?

A sitting Minnesota state senator

10:19 PM
i saw a "rape apologist bingo" thing floating around twitter and well, bingo
because this bro has checked many of the boxes
@Yuuki ran out of characters for boys will be boys and wanted to throw some victim blaming in for good measure

Yeah, it's one of the more impressively bad takes
I mean, it's no Erick Erickson, but

@TimStone was erick erickson the "all men should be scared" or the "as a father of sons"?
megan McArdle has a whew take as well

@GodEmperorDune Uhh he's covered the field at this point I think, but primarily the first with the "Dems are on the offensive!" slant

@TimStone oh yes, love to erase sen franken from existence

10:34 PM
lol is "lucid" some elon shade?
aww they are competing in the luxury space first

lol, unfortunately their blog post about the rebranding doesn't go into detail, but it was two years ago

Today in nope, nope, nope
Spiders blamed after broken siren played creepy nursery rhymes randomly at night to UK townsfolk https://boingboing.net/2018/09/17/spiders-blamed-after-broken-si.html

@GodEmperorDune That... doesn't really make it any less creepy

@SaintWacko everything about it is creepy

trade wars are so easy to win!
cc the hornswoggled guy

@GodEmperorDune I assume you're not watching Castle Rock?

@puzzlepiece87 nope, never heard of it

War is bad, the military shouldn't be venerated and sent everywhere. The draft should be reinstated.

although that sounds like the lannister home base

@GodEmperorDune Castle Rock = the town at the center of a lot of Stephen King books. There's now also a TV series by the same name about the same place on Hulu.

10:53 PM
@puzzlepiece87 if they could somehow make the draft a draft on everyone and not just poor people who can't afford to get out of it, maybe

(to be clear, when I say the draft should be reinstated, I mean that we wouldn't fight so many terrible wars of choice if everyone was affected and not just 1% sent on impossibly high numbers of redeployments)
@GodEmperorDune Exactly.

and there should be a balance between punishing vets for the shitty decisions of leadership by withholding medical care (a la vietnam) and making vets into political porn (a la trump)

@GodEmperorDune We should pay for all of their medical care forever. That would also help, if we had to pay the real costs of war instead of just a portion of them.
It's infuriating.
And if everyone's families were going, then Congresspeople wouldn't get away with only paying for substandard armor, etc.

@puzzlepiece87 i agree, but my concern is this incentivizes using private mercenary groups instead of the military (just like the private sector does with contractors instead of FTEs), because then we save money on benefits
(of course medicare for all means that everyone's healthcare is paid for and this dodge no longer is useful, so yay)

@GodEmperorDune Yay!

10:59 PM
@GodEmperorDune Erik Prince's theme music plays

@GodEmperorDune You're exactly right, I didn't think of that. Partner it with a federal ban on mercenaries? I'm dreaming, might as well dream big.

1/ In our Census case, we just got this email to Wilbur Ross that the court ordered the Govt to unredact. It shows that when Commerce first asked DOJ to come up w/a pretext for adding the citizenship q, DOJ balked b/c it was already getting bad press with "the whole Comey matter"
Woopsy daisy

@TimStone why did they put this stuff in writing? did no one know how FOIA works?

I mean probably not because they suck
But Wilbur Ross also likely forgets things if they aren't written down
DC federal judge ruled today that the Dept. of Energy didn't do an adequate search in response to a FOIA request for docs about Qs sent by Trump's transition team in Dec. 2016 about staff who attended certain meetings about climate change https://ecf.dcd.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/show_public_doc?2017cv0779-20
(to the first point)

@TimStone To be fair, so do I :D
Note to self: don't do crimes because I'll forget them or incriminate myself in writing.

11:09 PM
@TimStone wow is like they didn't understand what "but not limited to" means

@GodEmperorDune I would suddenly lose my understanding of that phrase given the same request also.

Flake says he told Cornyn yesterday if Ford didn’t get a chance to be heard before committee, he would vote no on Kavanaugh nomination
(it was obvious at least one of them did)

11:39 PM
I have a hundred dollars on flake voting yes

@Unionhawk Exactly. Get the victim up here, have them endure tons of internet harassment, don't act on a word she says, mission accomplished, ready to vote yes.
More victims? "Concerned." Vote yes.

It's going to be a solid 52
That's the official prediction
Best case scenario is we somehow hold out until the 116th which won't be possible
That case also assumes taking the senate

@Unionhawk only 50 days remain

11:55 PM
until electing the 116th
When do they actually sit

ahhh, early january i think

« first day (391 days earlier)      last day (2058 days later) »
