@Ave an aggregate of smart takes i've seen on this: 1) it's a small step but a good step for people contributing to toxicity in tech to realize and admit the thing, 2) a lot more can be done, don't shower the dude in cookies for the first step of a long journey, 3) the "not understanding emotions" is entering the territory of blaming personal jerkiness on having autistic traits and that is not a good place to steer the conversation towards, for obvious reasons

and the classic 4) don't punish the behavior you want to encourage, so i hope for more but yeah this is a good first step

Also, opinions like "chuck'em in jail" are the moments when I most realize how many of my views are a result of my father.

Since he's got very strong left leaning views, and so many of my values are a direct result of watching and talking to him as a I grew up. He was in a union too, and is very pro-union, so even outside of the government I saw a lot of views on the worker vs the boss.

Anyways, gotta get back to work, but it's always interesting when you realize how much your upbringing influences the person you become.

@Nzall What you're saying is important too, but just to help you pick up on what I'm perceiving to be the nuance of the previous discussion, they were talking about situations where there are victims and the offenders are starting to make reparations. Sometimes they get discouraged off that reparatory track by initial (true) criticisms that their first reparatory actions are not enough - so you avoid punishing them with those criticisms so they continue reparations until hopefully sufficient.

Yours is similar but different enough that I wasn't sure if you were following (if I am indeed correct in how I was perceiving the nuance).

Small little local story, but the whole thing is just unreal

Tl;Dr is that a ticket was drawn in a local lottery with two names in it, an aunt and a nephew. The aunt sued the nephew claiming she only put his name on it for good luck, and that he's not entitled to any of the money (the lottery originally gave each half).

The settlement appears to have gone with 25:75 split in favour of the aunt.

More, because he should have settled for a token amount (50-100k), and less because, without further instructions, lotteries are supposed to assume equal shares between everyone on the ticket, which is what they did.
