12:00 AM
Hell YES

In which case I guess I'm surprised more law firms don't financially vet their clients first?
To make sure they can actually afford to pay?
I'm missing some piece of logic in the system that makes it work.
@Unionhawk I'm behind, what is this?
@Ash Maybe it's just in the law firm's perception of the client's ability to pay? Because if this was an option to more people I bet we wouldn't see as many unjust plea bargains.
Maybe the other people are perceived to be too poor but law firms think a Hope Hicks or Roy Moore will be able to pay them? Not sure.

@TimStone surprised he ran out of money so quickly

@puzzlepiece87 lawyers do work first then bill you later
like "hey we spent 69 hours keeping you out of jail at $420 an hour"

@GodEmperorDune Yup, just wondering why they don't cut off their clients sooner I guess.

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 Depends on the case, I suspect

12:03 AM
@GodEmperorDune Like, "Here's the bill for the first 35 hours. Oh, you can't pay? I guess we won't do the second 35 then."

@puzzlepiece87 it's not like there are clear stopping points

@puzzlepiece87 lefty magazine

@puzzlepiece87 I mean I don't think he thought he could lose despite everything so I guess he's just doing whatever now

@GodEmperorDune Ah got it, there's my blind spot then.

usually it's an ongoing thing that is time sensitive

12:04 AM
One of our people did an interview regarding the library campaign

or like "represent me in this case" and the case will do nothing, then flare up in a lot of activity, then die down
and go on like this for years

@TimStone That's another piece of my naivete, I guess since I'm a budgeter that I was expecting most people to budget.

@puzzlepiece87 budgets on campaign things are a bit of a mess

@GodEmperorDune Makes sense, I just thought it would be more like "For cases like this, how many hours does it usually take? What ballpark estimate could I expect for my thing?"
I know it's law and not a window, but still. I guess I'm just an unreformed numbers person.
I'm a fan of the litigation financiers in The Good Fight lol.

@puzzlepiece87 that might work on a small contained thing like a traffic ticket
but big cases are much more swingy

12:06 AM
"We like this case but not the judge, we won't finance." "We'll get the judge changed, then come on board." "Deal."

and at the upper level you just pay retainer, which is like a flat monthly fee and they do whatever you need

@GodEmperorDune Makes sense, thanks for explaining.
@Unionhawk Congrats to DSA on getting into Jacobin.

I mean we're in all the time but the chapter being in is cool

however, something like an ongoing case you're not going to get away with just retainer, because of the work involved

@GodEmperorDune Yup, I guess Roy Moore doesn't pay retainer.
@GodEmperorDune Ah there we go.
To someone unversed like me that sounds suspiciously ripe for abuse like insurance though lol.
"We'll cover you" big thing happens "Oh, that? Act of God, not covered"

12:08 AM
@Ash I'll send you the article when it comes because it's going to be cool library campaign stuff

(I'm simplifying, I know insurance is more legally spelled out)
(But that's often how their premium increases and stuff feel like)
("We'll cover you for roof hail damage. Wait, you actually had hail damage? More monthly payment!")
@Unionhawk Me too please!

@puzzlepiece87 its more like retainer will cover one lawyer to do basic things at your whim but when it goes active then you need multiple lawyers and support staff to do lots of work, and it gets expensive

@GodEmperorDune Ahhhh got it. And then Roy Moore theoretically thought he could afford that but guessed wrong basically.

pretty sure they will tell you it will get more expensive, but you don'twant them to write half of a legal letter and wait for the money to continue

@GodEmperorDune Whereas for me my natural emotion would be to react like "I can afford at most one more lawyer on this"
(rather than just "surprise me")

12:12 AM
@puzzlepiece87 yeah the politician goto is more of "i want to win, i don't care how much it costs"

@GodEmperorDune "We'll issue bonds for that"

especially with campaign stuff because they are paying the lawyers with campaign funds
but once campaign is over, all the bills come due

Makes much more sense now, thank you!

and it's not like you can collect money for the next campaign and use it to pay the previous campaign if you lose
(but you can if you win :D)

12:14 AM
(like in 2008, obama asked for donations to hillary's primary campaign to pay off her debt)

America!

also on the church board front, the group i am involved with is also doing praxis

galaxy brain: if people are so intent on arming teachers, maybe we could fund that by levying taxes on gun manufacturers?

@GodEmperorDune You're probably typing, but tell me more.

turns out that a big person in the church from decades ago was a literal nazi supporter
so we pressured the board to rename a thing that was named after him
of course he was a rich white dude so there is literally stuff all over town named after him
hospital wings, buildings at caltech

12:18 AM
Nice, way to chip away.
Were you successful?
Also don't let me interrupt if you're still narrating, I can't tell.

our church board voted to do it
we will be publicizing it
but nothing is officially done yet

RockClapping.gif
Good work, congratulations!
I bet that feels good.

also i am not 100% sure of the name of the guy, so i'm not going ot slander him
we are also moving to make the board more diverse

Very nice!

because now its a bunch of white people that like to talk about being woke

12:20 AM
So this is a group inside your church?
That's the group you're working with?

and yet most of the diversity on church staff is in the maintenance dept
our church is big on social justice

Common problem
I'm glad you're pushing them

user15026
@Unionhawk Heck yes please do

they kinda sorta sponsored a group called white people for racial justice, but it's not religiously affilitiated

I am involved with Intervarsity outside of my church. We are doing better every year and I was happy we invited a BLM activist/pastor to speak at our huge every three years conference, but we're still working out getting more diversity in leadership.
Thankfully the new President is not white, that will help.
Or excuse me

12:22 AM
basically the church overall talks a big game about being diverse but people of color don't feel welcome and the existing church people get huffy and defensive when that point is raised

so as a group of white people we are basically signal boosting the people of color group at the church and being like "we think you should do this too and listen to them"

@GodEmperorDune Awesome awesome awesome, so needed.
Way to go.
It will hurt for them, but they'll be better off afterwards.

it's baby steps but we are trying to support without whitesplaining, basically

Very nice, thank you for educating yourselves and doing things the right way.

12:24 AM
and we figure even if we go down swinging, at least the people of color don't feel like the entire church is against them

Yes absolutely, I bet you it is seriously helping.
Sometimes people just need one friend

they have said as much :D

I'm cheering for you big time
I have to go, but here are my results so far at church
Every nomination committee since I joined the board has been either 4-3 female or 5-2

yeah, we got people of color on the nomination committee too

And when they put out a slate of candidates that was 3 males 2 females but both women were bad picks because they didn't want to serve, I got it sent back to committee to redo it

12:26 AM
it seems small but it is such a huge thing bureaucratically
nice

So far we haven't actually gotten any new women on the board but we haven't gotten any new men either - while I'm here I'm going to make sure we get a good slate of candidates or nothing.

aha, found the nazish dude on wikipedia
Robert Andrews Millikan (March 22, 1868 – December 19, 1953) was an American experimental physicist honored with the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1923 for the measurement of the elementary electronic charge and for his work on the photoelectric effect. Millikan graduated from Oberlin College in 1891 and obtained his doctorate at Columbia University in 1895. In 1896 he became an assistant at the University of Chicago, where he became a full professor in 1910. In 1909 Millikan began a series of experiments to determine the electric charge carried by a single electron. He began by measuring the course...

And seriously having majority women on the nomination committees is something I'm really proud of and know will lead to good eventually
Also, we fall into the experience fallacy so often at our church

> A more controversial belief of his was eugenics. This led to his association with the Human Betterment Foundation and his praising of San Marino, California, for being "the westernmost outpost of Nordic civilization ... [with] a population which is twice as Anglo-Saxon as that existing in New York, Chicago, or any of the great cities of this country."
his name is on so many things

"This person isn't a good candidate because they have no experience." except everyone in leadership is male so only men are gaining experience
And it's such bullshit because I had led precisely nothing at my church before being nominated to the freaking board because I was a warm-blooded male.
Such bullshit.
Anyway, I'm chipping away.
Gotta go to my church activity for tonight. Have a good weekend everyone!

12:30 AM
bye

Dems massively outvote GOP in Texas primary, setting record for early voting in non-presidential election years http://hill.cm/w6d0C2X
lol the Olive Garden dragging is on point

@TimStone RIP ted cruz for human president

Working class movements always draw on and reanimate memories of past struggles in moments of conflict. This is the cultural core of the process of class formation.
thread/yes

12:48 AM
@TimStone But early voting tho...

Better than not showing up

My point is that I’m always a bit wary at crowing about early voting numbers.

@Yuuki fair point

Yeah but record-breaking! People are showing up, MID-TERM SHOWDOWN
An incredible story about Oracle and it’s activities in Washington DC. https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-silicon-valley-giant-bankrolling-devin-nunes
Holy shit
Despite it being this, the year 2018, I would have never expected Oracle would find an amazing way for us to hate them even more

fuck oracle tbh

12:57 AM
LaGuardia Airport, looks more than a 65 mph wind gust to me. #Riley https://t.co/lqWp8qxgCg

@TimStone NUUUUUUUUNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Ah well, that seems less than ideal

them buying sun was the worst thing they've ever done, nothing else can shock me

@GodEmperorDune OF ALL PEOPLE

seriously wtf
time to boycott java y'all

i mean if the trump admin is running anything on oracle it explains a lot, tbh
shitty interfaces

You will be unsurprised to find the government uses a lot of Oracle

But we use Postgres. Because we're not heathens

we use peoplesoft from oracle because ugh
UGH
it sucks
the worst vendor product we use

1:13 AM
@Unionhawk oh they own peoplesoft? no wonder
i used it a while back and it was terrible

yep

1:30 AM
I was in college and it was the wooooooooooorst

strike fund is at 69,000

@Unionhawk nice
i'd give $420 for the lulz but i don't have that kind of money sitting around

who makes those stupid ass bots anyways
also pretty sure the math is off on that lol

1:48 AM
@GodEmperorDune it's actually at like 69,900 but
you know

One chef’s social experiment: Charge minorities $12, white people $30. http://wapo.st/2tbdZuO
@Unionhawk time to make a withdrawl imo

I mean, leaving aside the fact that it's faster than light

it's a gofundme
so
lol

@quartata working as designed
@Unionhawk next stop, 420,069

@GodEmperorDune purified salt in the comments

1:52 AM
@quartata I feel like that might be part of the point.

I saw this image of Rep. Mike Bost delivering Trump a bag of 'thoughts and prayers' and thought it was satire or The Onion. Nope, this really happened.

@Unionhawk there's the creeper smile again

You really did not want to fuck with meatpacking workers during their 1948 national strike.
Dam
(there's like a 90% chance the strike impacted Cincinnati lol)

2:07 AM
@Unionhawk This dude is unhealthy for my WTF-meter.

oh shit yall
according to maggie haberman, trump is trying to push jared and ivanka out of the white house

HA

trying to track down the article

Ayy, Hayes apparently talked about the thing

take that whoever said he'd throw large adult sons under the bus first

2:10 AM
finally

I win 69 cents

@quartata me

yes that person

though technically large adult sons were already out of the white house

ostensibly at least

2:10 AM
@quartata i would've coughed up 4.20 but 0.69 is nice too

sounds like someone has disposable income
someday I hope to be able to have $420.69

your payment should arrive in 69 weeks

I accept a one cent per week payment plan

i sent it in thiccoin of course

2:25 AM
it's pretty funny that the president farted out a tariff on a whim and the EU immediately launched a well-thought-out plan to target industries from the speaker's, senate majority leader's, and house minority leader's states https://twitter.com/jimsciutto/status/969629745192333312
Probably drafted that shit months ago and were sitting around when an aide came in and said "Sir, I regret to inform you that the American President h-" "Henri just please press send on our response"

user15026
nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna852651?__twitter_impression=true yes good, country music. Don't put up with Mike Huckabee and his bullshit.

UCLA basketball players' release from China was secured before Trump got involved: report http://hill.cm/geNtJhK

2:41 AM
@TimStone rekt

What does that have to do with his musical views tho

3:06 AM
@GnomeSlice Country music artists can be gay too, I guess? Plus, Huckabee’s musical pursuits have always been more rock-ish than country.
The thing is that country music is often unfortunately stereotyped with traditionally socially conservative viewpoints.
And perhaps the board didn’t want to be associated with those views that Huckabee is very well known for.

I see

Besides, why is a politician on the board of a music association in the first place?
He’s not known for his artistic prowess after all.

@Yuuki Yeah it seems like the whole thing could have been avoided by someone going "Oh right why are we asking Mike Huckabee at all?"

user15026
@GnomeSlice Maybe it's not directly tied to it, but I can see country as a thing wanting to distance itself from things that make it seem like they promote views like his. Considering it already has a bad rap for being poor white trash music and all.

user15026
And like...if you knew he thought you were a terrible person for existing, would you want to work with him?

user15026
3:18 AM
""This man has made it clear that my family is not welcome in his America. And the CMA has opened their arms to him, making him feel welcome and relevant." Owens wrote in the letter, which was obtained by Music Row.

"Huckabee speaks of the sort of things that would suggest my family is morally beneath his and uses language that has a profoundly negative impact upon young people all across this country. Not to mention how harmful and damaging his deep involvement with the NRA is. What a shameful choice," Owen added."

user15026
(That's quoting the openly gay head of a rather large music management company, Jason Owen)

user15026
So, yknow.

user15026
You can't really divorce those views from stuff. Because regardless of his musical views or inclinations, he's got some really garbage ideas about things, and that matters.

He's also an extremely bad twitter comedian incidentally

3:35 AM
I'm so tired

@Unionhawk apparently hope hicks' diary is govt property and belongs to the presidential archive

My daughter sees @TuckerCarlson report on TV saying California is becoming 3rd world and asks me why. I tell her CA has highest taxes in USA that make it hard for people to afford to live here. She responds “Don’t you get paid to fix it?”
Buddy if you think that's what he's talking about boy do I have news for you
Also I think your daughter just burned you but that's neither here nor there

@GodEmperorDune see, if she just watched west wing tho...

@TimStone even his profile pic looks like he's getting dunked on

lol it does

3:50 AM

@TimStone that pairs really well with the avatar

@TimStone wat.
Seriously. What the fuck America?

4:07 AM
Yeah, it's a serious problem :/

@TimStone this is coming up as rebecca black

@TimStone he doesn't even know he just got toasted by his own daughter
eeeediot
some nice white supremacists ranting about the reconquista in the comments there
thinking it might be a nice idea to take Tucker on a """«'compare and contrast»" fact finding mission where he goes to San Francisco then to rwanda one-way so he can learn what third world means other than people who disagree with you

5:11 AM
@quartata please don't harm the people of rwanda by exposing them to tucker carlson, they've been through enough

6:08 AM
@GodEmperorDune Man, imagine the Trump Presidential Library...

4 hours later…
10:11 AM
@Yuuki it's a single computer that's on 24/7. only program to use is a browser and the network firewall blocks everything except twitter which is always logged into Trump's account
no one knows why it's there as no one ever uses it because Trump tweets on everything else, but the staff at the white house just watch it magically post tweets

4 hours later…
2:23 PM

2:33 PM
@TimStone I feel like taxes isn't even a primary reason why cost of living is so high but also Nunes would be opposed to fixing high rents
And for reducing the SALT deduction

3:14 PM
Chant at the tech workers rally: “JavaScript! C plus plus! Bourgeoisie don’t f—- with us!” Shame on @Lanetix for firing 100% of its software engineers for filing for a union election. Stand with @News_Guild & #CWA
sadly I'm certain it's really easy to find scab devs (or outsource) lol

3:58 PM
12 hours ago, by Tim Stone
Yeah, it's a serious problem :/
There are a whole host of reasons behind it, none of which are defensible IMO, and a lot of which are exploitative

I see I wasn't the only one with this reaction

user15026
@MadScientist what the hell

Especially in the cases where it's being done because there is a pregnancy, the actual situation would usually be that a rape has occurred and that's being shoved under the rug by forcing the marriage

@TimStone If I read it right, pregnancy is the only case where it's actually allowed under 16, which is especially fucked up

user15026
" "Decisions involving a minor child should be made by a parent, not the court."" HELL NO

user15026
4:01 PM
Because in this case, if you want the parent to make the decision, its' because you know the judge won't

there's not really any need to children to marry before they're 18 anyway

user15026
Let them be children!

user15026
Sorry, this sort of thing just makes me want to throw things and/or throw up

@MadScientist Yeah, I'm not sure if it's true in all states which allow this (of which Kentucky is unfortunately not the only one), but putting the rape aspect aside this is their "solution" instead of abortion
Abortion is totally an unforgivable sin or whatever but forcing your child into marriage with their rapist is A-okay

user15026
Yeah that makes 0 sense to me

4:09 PM
It's not completely uncommon for these arrangements to involve a financial transaction from what I've understood, which is a boon for parents who were already taken by drug abuse and what have you
The whole business is just gross to me and while it doesn't surprise me that it's still prevalent here it does make me pretty sad :/
There was a report last year about this, and it's not just a "Hahah backwoods Kentucky" thing
I need to double-check, but I think my state only allows judicial approval for 17-year olds, which still seems entirely unnecessary to me but at least is closer to the legal age outright :/

@TimStone What the fuck US.

user15026
@TimStone That is horrifying

user15026
That did make me check Canada's law

user15026
which is age of majority, or 16+ with parental/court consent (what consent is needed varies by province it looks like). But no lower than 16.

hmm, looks like the German law also changed recently. Now you have to be 18 to enter a marriage, and below 16 the marriage is entirely invalid. It used to to be allowed above 16 if a court made an exception

4:29 PM
Belgium has age limit of minimum 18, below that a judge can make an exception, also: no marriage between family, except when the King gives an exception.

@Ash huh age of majority is pretty low

user15026
@quartata 18 or 19, so not super low

user15026
Seems to be on par with a lot of other countries

I think he just missed an or there

user15026
Oh, yeah, that would make sense

5:05 PM
Oh right I forgot Atlanta was a candidate city for hq2 sweepstakes
lol

user15026
Hm?

@Ash yeah I misread thought it was 16 which was confusing

@Ash And they just tossed Delta's tax break so it's possible they'll look at that and go "hm, maybe no"

user15026
@Unionhawk I think i am missing context here

Gotta look good for Amazon

user15026
5:08 PM
@quartata Ah, okay :)

Leftists: Raise corporate taxes! No Amazon HQ! GOP: Oh yeah? We'll show you for attacking the NRA! https://twitter.com/catvalente/status/969660866177232896

something something own the libs by passing the laws we want

5:31 PM
Strike fund is up to 90

5:56 PM
@Unionhawk Linky-linky
Oh wait the shady business practices of that wall company were that they stiff subcontractors?
That's fantastic, do they just have a conference for people who do this where they met Trump?

pretty sure that's the point of mar-a-lago

If the E.U. wants to further increase their already massive tariffs and barriers on U.S. companies doing business there, we will simply apply a Tax on their Cars which freely pour into the U.S. They make it impossible for our cars (and more) to sell there. Big trade imbalance!
lmao
So I virtually guarantee he is unaware that many car makers do in fact have production plants inside the US
We literally already went through this, but somehow he still is unaware

6:11 PM
lololol

@TimStone so easy to win a trade war

Fox News host attacks Sessions: He has "lost his prosecutorial balls" http://hill.cm/oZSAqI5
Prosecution is stored in the balls don't @ me /cc @Unionhawk

that gives new meaning to prosecutorial misconduct

lolol
Ah, of course it's Pirro wanting Sessions to investigate Clinton and Uranium One

didn't we already explain this to them like 2 years ago

6:16 PM
Yeah but if they didn't keep going on they'd have nothing useful to talk about

rehashing material lol

It's just funny to suggest that if there were a case he thought he could win that Sessions would randomly not move forward with it

obviously he's been bribed by deep state george soros agents with keebler ice cream cones to stay quiet

@TimStone muslim ban tho
ah nvm, that's the reverse

JUST IN: Trump attacks media as "crazy" hours before attending media dinner http://hill.cm/h0Ys6JP
Oh wait the WHCD is tonight? lol

6:26 PM

@TimStone HUE

@TimStone can't believe he's actually going
can't wait for him to just get up and shout "WRONG" right in the middle of a skit

@quartata I can't wait for them to show them the door for being a horrible person.
Also: the media is not being mocked, Trump is. And Fox news.

user15026
6:54 PM
Oh, Pence, you goddamn horrifying piece of humanity: msn.com/en-us/news/politics/…

lolol
not sure what generation he's referring to but does it really matter

@Ash Can we please abort this dude out of the space-time continuum?

Florida's Senate approved a two-year moratorium on the sale of the AR-15

@Arperum kill -6 I believe

But because this is Florida they immediately moved to Reconsider and then shot it down

user15026
6:57 PM
Damn, for a second there I had hope

Yeah, sorry, I kind of set you up for the "Wow what the hell Florida?" moment
Because why even pass it to begin with if you were going to turn right around literally minutes later and undo it?

user15026
Yeah that makes no sense

user15026
Thats a Charlie Brown football moment

@TimStone just so that they can say they passed it
leave out the rest and it looks good

The vast majority of healthcare wonkery is brainstorming new ways to rescue private insurers from collapsing every time they're asked to do the one thing they exist to do https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2018/03/02/589577443/time-running-short-for-congress-to-stabilize-individual-insurance-market
lmao, if you're going to do that then why would you even have the private insurer to begin with?

7:03 PM
@TimStone So the private insurer can send money to your campaign fund.

@TimStone only 2 years too, lol
"surely this gun crisis will be solved in 2 years"
not like it started 20 years ago or anything

7:22 PM
Why do all these campaigns want me to sign birthday cards? Like I like y'all, and hope you do good politics, but I don't know you like that 🤔

@TimStone the only silver lining is that Trump might go too far with the trade war for the Republicans. If he's no longer just the useful but dangerous idiot for them, but only a dangerous idiot.

Are they beating you?

I think they stole one of our circle cutters while we were taking a WV strike solidarity photo but other than that
We have a large pile of papers left
And a large pile of button blanks we bought
We bought like $30 worth and they're like ten cents a piece
We just gave them a bunch of women's day stickers because we also made those

Trump has begun asking those around him whether they think Kushner or his family's company could have done anything wrong. https://www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/politics/pure-madness-dark-days-inside-the-white-house-as-trump-shocks-and-rages/2018/03/03/9849867c-1e72-11e8-9de1-147dd2df3829_story.html#click=https://t.co/UuSr2J4zPh

speaking of the dumbass tariffs, apparently california imports steel from abroad and shapes it into things
so thanks trump

Steel production vs consumption jobs is a fun difference

so even the "domestic will be cheaper" thing is gonna be well, actuallied
apparently cheaper to ship on boats than by rail

@GodEmperorDune I've also read an article of a company that was like, we were going to do a huge steel -related industry thing in the US, but if this tariff happens, we won't. So we'll wait for a bit now. This was talking about an investment of hundreds of millions.

Holy shit
@KanielaIng Rich kid Billy in his shined shoes doesn't get to play baseball with the low-income school kids who are in tattered jeans because they don't like him because he is rich. Discrimination not always about upward.
Holy shit
Stab me in the face
(re to)
@joangreeneaz Discrimination is systemic, more than oth thoughts and acts. Members of an oppressed class necessarily cannot discriminate upward.
Reverse economic discrimination
Fucking, amazing
Fuck
