9:00 PM
Being horrible people is already so, so bad, but why do you have to be ridiculous on top of it?

and as @ash pointed out, the "ongoing social debate" is whether trans people exist or not. must be nice to be so comfortable that you don't have to argue for your rights and can just leave whenever you get some pushback

@TimStone 😶

@TimStone the refugee group is at the southern border of mexico though.... are you gonna wait several weeks for them to move up?

> “Well why did you come, is what I’m asking you. Can you tell me why you came illegally?" Jenkins asked an unknown woman.
> The woman responded: “The situation in Honduras. You cannot have work in there because the criminals will always get your money.”
Ah well I'm sure he feels like a big man now 🙄
I'm sure they later went on to say "WhY dIdN't YoU jUsT aPpLy FoR cItIzEnShIp?" or something in complete disregard for the associated costs and difficulties

i guess this is slightly better than watters interviewing people that don't speak english in english for lulz

9:05 PM
@TimStone I can't say this enough:

@TimStone or the fact that the trump admin dgaf about legal immigration either

Indeed

There is no path to citizenship in the US that doesn't involve employer/family sponsorship, invested money, or asylum
There's no line you can just get at the end of
A lot of people (like Fox) either don't understand or actively don't care/support this situation and will happily parrot the "WhY nOt JuSt ApPlY?" and it makes me very mad.

I'm trying to remember how my parents came to America because it wasn't option 1 or 3.
Or at least I don't think it was option 1.

@puzzlepiece87 and when refugees show up requesting asylum, the trump admin (as CBP/ICE, not even a judge) goes "lol nope" and detains/deports

9:07 PM
@GodEmperorDune Yup exactly.

And I don't think they had enough money for option 2.

@Yuuki It hasn't always been this way - Ellis Island used to be a thing, after all.

@puzzlepiece87 Yeah, I think people just don't care and it's easy to assume it can't be hard if you never had to do it

@puzzlepiece87 Well, they came over in the '90s.

@Yuuki option 2 is half a million, iirc

9:09 PM
@Yuuki I think the open line ended when they did the family sponsorship thing thinking that it would lead to more whiteness because America was already white and then that backfired because Europeans didn't actually want to come here.

@TimStone except a lot of the right wing always complains about how terriblely inefficient govt and bureaucracy is

So now it's chain migration and they want something else intended to be racist

@puzzlepiece87 there was a point in the 1800s where if you were from the wrong part of europe, you weren't considered white

@GodEmperorDune Yup, white used to mean northern European but also not Irish.

irish wasn't white enough

user15026
9:10 PM
@Yuuki If it is anything like here, option 1 used to be a lot easier than it is now

@GodEmperorDune Neither was Italian and South/Eastern European.

user15026
(and here, option 1 used to be "you married a Canadian? GREAT COME OVER HERE", among other easier options)

@puzzlepiece87 yep

@Ash It's possible that my dad had an employer sponsorship, but given that he immediately went to college for computer science, I'm not sure about that.
Family sponsorship is right out because we're the only part of our family in America. Or at least until my cousin came over a few years ago.

@Yuuki Oh, wouldn't it just be student visa --> find sponsoring employer then?

9:12 PM
@puzzlepiece87 Possible.
But it's definitely an odd one because my dad already had a bachelor's for chemical engineering.
Getting a student visa to study for an entirely different major and a bachelor's at that?

user15026
Curiouser and curiouser!

That is still the main way to find a sponsoring employer these days. Student, do internship, "We like you, we'll apply for an H-1B", "We really like you, we'll fully sponsor you"

user15026
@Yuuki doesn't seem outside the realm of possible

@Yuuki i'm surprised it wasn't an energy company that sponsored him then

@Yuuki That's fairly common. I'm at a Chinese church with lots of students. For those that come over, the idea is to just get here any way they can and work out the details later.

9:14 PM
@GodEmperorDune It's possible (I've lived in Houston for awhile now after all) but not likely given that we lived in South Carolina for the duration of his study and his original field of study in chemical engineering had little to do with petroleum or hydrocarbons.

user15026
School is an easy way to bridge that gap of getting here, yeah

@puzzlepiece87 H-1B is not quite that simple, there are a bunch of politics about which companies even get the H-1Bs to apply

It is nearly impossible to have anything substantial lined up before you get here. Finding someone who wants to fly you over for interviews, etc.

@puzzlepiece87 with tech these days it's easier

I'll probably ask when I get home.

9:15 PM
@GodEmperorDune Yup, I know from my involvement with the church/friends/my wife. So people who want to stay study things that lead to jobs that are H-1B eligible.

@puzzlepiece87 i've heard of companies stringing people along with the promise of H-1B that never materialize

My wife almost lost her chance because her company put "Accounting Assistant" as her occupation on her application instead of "Accountant". The former is ineligible, the latter is not.

Yeah, there's a lot that's unsaid or unrecognized when people think of the stereotype of Asian families wanting their kids to study medicine.

or they have one H-1B for several people

@GodEmperorDune Taking advantage of interns and underpaid labor? Why I never! How dare you, sir?

user15026
9:17 PM
All of that sounds awful

user15026
Mind you I have not as much knowledge of how it works here beyond Express Entry and Skilled Worker streams

@puzzlepiece87 not to mention that once you are in the H-1B process you are literally stuck with that company for something like 7 years or you have to restart the process when you switch employers

Next thing I know, you'll be telling me that Elon Musk himself makes frivolous promises of free rollercoasters and yogurt so Tesla employees won't unionize.

@Ash it is a nasty gross system in need of fixing.... unfortunately the trump admin is not likely to make it better for the future citizens

@GodEmperorDune 1. Yupppp 2. Each visa is actually 3 years and you can earn a maximum of 2 visas. After that, employer sponsorship or gtfo.

user15026
9:19 PM
@puzzlepiece87 This part I knew!

@puzzlepiece87 damn you're right, i may be mixing H-1B and green card application

But yes you're quite right about the visa not traveling with you, and good luck if the position you accepted disappears, the company goes under, you have a boss who hates you, etc.

user15026
(someone I used to live with went through the HIB process)

@puzzlepiece87 Or your company would like you to move to a new location every year.

user15026
@GodEmperorDune nods I am just not sure if ours is better or not

9:20 PM
@GodEmperorDune Green card --> citizenship is 7 years yes. We have our fingers crossed for two more years for Mrs. Puzzle before we can get her citizenship and breathe a small sigh of relief.

I'm sure you can say no. But you won't. Because of the implication.

user15026
Like I think it sucks less? But I didn't research it all that hard once I figured out that spousal was easier for me

Small vintage plane down on the 101 @ Liberty Canyon Rd. Pilot not injured. FD responding.

@TimStone pilot did nazi that coming
oh hey the 101, this is my area

Yeah I feel like we've already heard about this pilot?

9:22 PM
@GodEmperorDune You nailed that joke Fuh-sure

@puzzlepiece87 i struggled with it

@GodEmperorDune There was so much humor to mein, you had to really be choosy.

(also sorry Newsweek link)

If the “healthy conversations” thing made you think it was about curbing harassment/toxicity, sorry. It’s about onboarding new and infrequent users who find the platform confusing (the eternal issue, by a new name)

9:27 PM
@TimStone Ah so America lands Nazi planes on their highways twice in two years, got it. I'm surprised this doesn't happen wehrmacht often.

user15026
@GodEmperorDune greaaaat

oh for those unaware, the above tweet was about twitter's internal "healthy conversations" project that they touted whenever people complained about toxicity on twitter

@GodEmperorDune I mean it's kind of confusing why there are so many nazis so maybe start there idk
Scoop from @Kate_H_Taylor: Leaked documents reveal McDonald's is expanding its breakfast menu for the first time in years with sandwiches that contain 3 times the meat https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-new-breakfast-sandwich-triple-breakfast-stacks-2018-10?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=topbar&utm_term=desktop&referrer=twitter via @businessinsider
Okay but maybe just bring back the BLT bagel you cowards

@TimStone You know what's even better than a BLT on a bagel?

@TimStone is this a move to increase trump's heart disease?

9:38 PM
A BLT on a croissant

user15026
@TimStone I loved that

@TimStone i do love the UI in this training guide actually

@TimStone So... "new"?
It's basically just adding more sausage patties to the existing single patty breakfast sandwich, right?

user15026
@Yuuki and bacon

I suppose that's new given that I remember having to choose bacon or sausage but not both.

9:44 PM
@Ash Right? It was still McDonald's but my body felt a little less regret

user15026
@TimStone exactly!

Nevada Republican's family blasts his campaign in op-ed: 'It's all fake' https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/oct/23/adam-laxalt-nevada-governor-candidate-family-op-ed?CMP=share_btn_tw

> “You can’t pick your family,” Gosar responded in a tweet in September. “We all have crazy aunts and relatives etc and my family is no different. I hope they find peace in their hearts and let go all the hate …”
When you're calling all of your siblings "the crazy one in the family", maybe you're the crazy one...
Probably not a good rule of thumb though.

> Even Josh Kushner, younger brother to White House utility man Jared Kushner, has been seen bucking familiar political solidarity. He was spotted at a March for Our Lives event and reportedly donated $50,000 to the anti-gun violence movement.
lol "utility man"
is that some british shade?

10:06 PM
@GodEmperorDune It's a sports term I believe. It means versatile.
Jared is basically "in charge" of like 10 different things.
Usually versatile means performing in all of those different areas rather than being completely worthless in them, though.

10:23 PM
@puzzlepiece87 oh snap
Senior VA official had portrait of KKK's first grand wizard hanging in his office http://hill.cm/qGUkOeP
> David J. Thomas Sr. told the Post that he was not aware that the man in the portrait, Nathan Bedford Forrest, was the white supremacist organization's first figurehead. He said he removed the portrait after a Post reporter explained Forrest's significance.
> he knew Forrest only as "a southern general in the Civil War."
and yet you didn't think that hanging up a portrait of a confederate general in the civil war was a bad thing to do?

"I didn't know he was racist. I thought he just fought to keep black people enslaved"

10:54 PM
> David: i thought he was a southern general in the Civil War
Reporter: then why would he be wearing that white outfit?
David: because he's a scary ghost of a southern general in the Civil War
Man accused of groping woman: Trump "says it's OK to grab women by their private parts" http://hill.cm/8bTBFIs
> According to the affidavit, Alexander told officers after he was placed in handcuffs that "the president of the United States says it’s OK to grab women by their private parts."

> The painting, by artist Don Stivers, shows Forrest wearing a gray military uniform and astride a horse. It is titled “No Surrender” and depicts the general fleeing a snowy Tennessee battlefield in 1862.
Wait is this like the actual artist's description of the painting or? Is this irony art world? 🤔

But also of all the people not to know,

@Memor-X i mean he literally did

The guy with that statue seems to be low on the list, lol

10:59 PM
@TimStone lol i knew this was coming
and tbh i would've replaced the portrait with a pic of this statue

@GodEmperorDune i know it's just, well maybe i should stop assuming these people have brains to know that the president is an idiot when he says something stupid like that

user15026
@TimStone this is terrifying

11:29 PM
@TimStone as it turns out, this is right before one of my teammate's exit
so his commute is going to be quite nasty

@GodEmperorDune That sucks :|

11:49 PM
(is that better? idk, trying to be more aware of that >_>)

user15026
@TimStone I think so, yes.

user15026
@GodEmperorDune And isn't traffic like...already terrible for you guys?

@Ash Great, thanks!

@Ash yes

user15026
Great, he's like...never getting home now

11:53 PM
Literally raining nazis to ruin your day smh

traffic around all the alternate routes is a deep burgundy
because this isn't like the city parts where you can just take streets instead of freeway, the streets don't really link up in this area

@Memor-X This is the example the commander in chief sets.

and everyone who gets booted off the freeway takes the same alternate route so yay
