White House fires back at Graham over Stephen Miller using Graham's own words: "He's been an outlier for years" http://hill.cm/k4NDbe1
The only solution here is Thunderdome

.@dougalrobinson: Lawmakers in the US are hoping to come to an agreement in the next 6 to 8 hours before federal employees are due back at work. http://bit.ly/2ru8PJg https://t.co/CxwU65s9k6

@TimStone 2 men enter no man leaves

It would be quite good/hilarious if to avoid taking any personal responsibility Trump just dumped it all on Miller and fired him
gets starry-eyed I can dream

@stevenmiller sir... Your fired

12:33 AM
"I mean, I like him, but he's no deal maker, he's no Donald Trump. And he kept leaving molted skin everywhere, it was disgusting, just awful. So I let him go"

> Trump: he was so insistent on keeping the Wall as it is despite me wanting to compromise to stop the government shutdown so i fired him
Miller: that was you
Trump: see, just like Bannon when i fired him he went mad, he's talking crazy

@TimStone i think it's still early for that

Probably, yes

user15026
.....welp, after conversation in here earlier I looked up FBI background check processing times

user15026
12:48 AM
14-16 weeks

user15026
Yeaaah, I think I'mma gonna hold the heck off on mailing this stuff even if I do get it together this week, because we gotta do that and I don't want to send this and them ask for that and have to go "hahahaha so about that"

@Ash wait why does canada use an FBI background check instead of a background check by canadian authorities?

user15026
@GodEmperorDune For him not me

user15026
I suspect to make them have to do less stuff and chase less stuff, if I had to guess

ah, gotcha

user15026
12:52 AM
I don't know, I've stopped trying to think of the "why" for all this because that makes me more anxious, I just treat it like "one more checklist checkbox checked"

user15026
I am glad I just happened to look at that though

user15026
(It's only slightly shorter here, RCMP is currently listing "120 days or less" as their criminal record check processing time)

user15026
(oh, never mind, I misread)

user15026
Canada is 120 days IF your fingerprints match, 3 days if nothing pops up

user15026
I wonder if the FBI's is similar.... their site is less clear

2:05 AM

are they serious right now

user15026
....oh boy

That seems a bit too on the nose

user15026
I hope so

2:44 AM
No deal tonight, they’ll try again tomorrow (us govt shutdown)

It's horrible but on the plus side my gamble in putting off some stuff I should have done has totally paid off

@Yuuki every young conservative Twitter account is a leftist psyop and you cannot convince me otherwise
You cannot convince me that @YALiberty is real

@Yuuki was that reply talking about the stock market crash?

@Memor-X yeah

3:31 AM
George W. Bush's favorability pulls a 180 via @CNN polling —> 2009: 34-62% 2014: 46-51% 2015: 52-43% 2018: 61-33% (!)
love too continuously shift the overton window such that W qualifies as good somehow

lol
George W. Bush's latest favorability numbers in our new @CNN poll include a 54% favorable, 41% unfavorable rating among Democrats (!!!).
Holy shit you're right
Literally is favorable because he's not Trump
What on earth

@quartata it's like what happened with Roy Moore. there were people who didn't like Doug Jones or the Democratics but voted for him because he wasn't Roy Moore

4:07 AM
Not sure if this has been posted here before but this thread is 🔥:
I am the very model of a Very Stable Genius. I have a mighty button and no problems with my penius. I have no time for television, golf, or social media Since my brain is way way better than the best encyclopedia.

4:22 AM
@Memor-X I mean to be fair Jones is a member of the Senate Garbage Democrats Caucus so
Him with like, Manchin and such

4:34 AM
I mean plus George W Bush does paintings instead of war crimes now so there's no pressing reason for most people to have a strong opinion of him, I imagine
Hmm I forgot that I now have to once again consider whether I'm doing The Crimes by working on XYZ-related stuff during the shutdown

4:52 AM
Just claim that you are and don't do anything

I actually have stuff I need to get caught up on, lol

Well now it's Steven Miller's fault that's a thing

During a shutdown you're literally prohibited from working though, even voluntarily. I think that since our contract is already paid for though I'm technically exempt.

5 hours later…
10:07 AM
@TimStone So the US army is currently forbidden of doing a thing? Or are they excluded?

2 hours later…
12:30 PM
@Arperum the shutdown is limited to nonessential operations only. So in some cases perhaps, but active duty personnel are still active

@TimStone ask your boss for certainty. don't want you to get dishonorably discharged for disobeying directions

1:10 PM
iirc he is his boss lol

1:55 PM
@Unionhawk Didn't the USA just elect a stable genius with a big red button and a wall fetish as president because of a similar action?

2:21 PM
The scene in the Knesset today as Arab members protested VP Mike Pence's remarks and were escorted out. https://t.co/zNJAtmxFGy

also lol the NYPD police union rank-and-file members are mad that their get-out-of-jail-free cards are getting cut from 30 to 20 (20 to 10 for retirees)
(I do not know what that number is, really, 20 per ever? 20 per year?)

2:47 PM
I honestly didn't know that was a thing. I thought you at least had to "donate" to the force or whatever to get the stupid sticker

I think that might be the case but they can now only get up to 20 instead of 30

It sounded like they literally hand something out like this is a thing that's on the books and everyone is inexplicably okay with it
At least the donation is a "wink wink nod nod" thing, which is still horrible but less stupidly blatant

I mean, the police donate their bodies to the force, is that not enough

lol damnit
#BREAKING: House Dems raise record-breaking total in 2017 http://hill.cm/rR3EKpy
Ryan's PAC also raised a record-breaking amount
C'mooon billionaire showdown

I mean he got the tax bill done so yeah he raised a lot
He'll yeah Citizens United

1. Police unions are a gang
2. 'MERICA, F YEAH

wtaf

See point #1

22 mins ago, by Unionhawk
I mean, the police donate their bodies to the force, is that not enough

Let the bodies hit the force

3:15 PM
This is now my go-to line for police-related matters because I'm like 100% certain someone has used that in earnest before

I used to want to emigrate to the US. Now, not so much.
Not that Britain isn't totally fukt, but at least it's not that bad

BREAKING: Sheriff's office says a shooter is in custody after a high school shooting south of Dallas; no injuries reported.
@fredley If you're gainfully employed and male and not a minority it'll probably be fine
Plus hopefully it'll all get better or we'll all be dead from nuclear war

@TimStone brb, coming over to tk yer jerbs

Yeah just have a police union friend who can hook you up with a card

@Unionhawk Man, I thought I was almost as left as you, but you totally routed me over the weekend :P

3:20 PM
To be fair, like, the Friend Of Police type cards will get you out of like, a relatively minor traffic stop
Which is already pretty discretionary anyway because Reasons

Free water has its issues, particularly if you're in California or something. Have a (high) cap, and gradually more expensive metering above that cap.
The idea being most people never hit the cap, but the guy with 2 pools has to pay a bit

@Unionhawk But you also might then not get shot so
Trump known to use an Indian accent to imitate India's prime minister: report http://hill.cm/FnedT20

@fredley Yeah it wasn't a fully armed and operational take

Oh wow guys I think the President might be a racist doing typically racist things

@TimStone I mean if they roll up on you like they did in Cleveland that one time you won't get a chance to show your "friend of cops" card

3:24 PM
This is true. Rear window decal FTW

btw 3 billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri is a pretty good film
It's by the same director as In Bruges
Similarly dark humour, midget content

@TimStone No. All of these "lowest ever" headlines are like "If the prices are always dropping at Wal-Mart, how come nothing's free yet?" The real story is that Trump's doing fine, barf: projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings

@TimStone Actually has anyone considered just printing a bunch of those to mess with them?

That's probably a crime for some reason
Forging Official Police Union Documents (misdemeanor I)

YoU WoUlDn'T dOwNlOaD a CaR

3:26 PM
@Ash Speaking as someone who underwent a highish priority background check, they're so far behind on background checks that a couple weeks won't add significantly to the delays you'll experience, most likely.

Broken Taillight
Lying To Police (defendent claims that I broke his taillight)

jfc I don't understand what it is with people pulling u-turns in the middle of the road outside my window. There are literally two very close entrances to my complex that they could use to turn around

@Ash Also, these words were said to my wife last year as she received her green card: "Normally, you'd need to be married two years for this to be permanent. Since it's already been two years, it's permanent."
(Read: we had a very delayed interview)

GOP lawmaker tears into Dems: They are trying to hold the government hostage to get what they want http://hill.cm/TZESgpB
Inject the disingenuousness right into my veins

binch they offered a 3 day CR with CHIP only to keep it open and you guys said no

3:31 PM
AFAIK literally no one is hinging on "open border"

Yeah no that's not their plan are you serious

CBP and ICE and the wall are all terrible and stupid but bring DACA to the floor and this is over immediately

They want just DREAM Act and they'll throw in the wall for free
Act now and they'll double the offer and throw in 50% reduced legal immigration at no additional charge
YOU GET TWO WALLS FOR THE PRICE OF TWO
But yeah no we're not hinging on All 11 Million what
I mean maybe we should be but that isn't the current fight presented by the party

@Ash Oh excuse me, sounds like I misunderstood the situation, I take it all back. You're immigrating to Canada.

Think it’s these bad boys: 1: https://m.ebay.com/itm/2018-NYC-Police-Lieutenants-COUSIN-LBA-Card-ONLY-NOT-A-PBA-SBA-DEA-FOP-/282811352634 2: https://m.ebay.com/itm/NYPD-2018-CAPTAINS-PBA-CARD-VERY-HARD-TO-GET-/142659473438 https://twitter.com/maxwellstrachan/status/955458583562473472
lmao
That you can get this shit on ebay is just icing on the cake

3:35 PM
$3.50 shipping too

There's an All Hands meeting but the conferencing thing apparently has an occupancy limit so they sent out multiple links, lol

@Ash Good philosophy.

@TimStone Hey R's, let's talk about the last time there was a government shutdown.

@Unionhawk tbf about this quote though it was supposed to be like a "Fine you want a stupid f'ing wall? Look, I'm building your stupid f'ing wall. Stop being an asshole and save the DREAMers" but because words just make sentences in text it was, as usual, an epic fail of communication

I mean yeah but that doesn't mean they're not willing to throw it in as a token of bipartisanship
DACA, wall, chip would almost definitely get 60

3:41 PM

The worst part about this whole thing is like
Instead of finding and hiring a different doctor they covered it up?
Like

It's really a sickening failure of so many people
Kid Rock donating over $100,000 from teased Senate campaign merchandise to GOP voter registration effort http://hill.cm/UiX8d99
That entire sentence broke my brain
People gave him how much? And GOP what the what now?

@fredley my city’s water gets more expensive per gallon the more you use.

Just convince the guy with two pools that using Raw Water would be better so that he spends all his money on filling his pools instead of just some of it
tbh

It's important to capture your excess nutrients by drinking from the water in which you swim
@GodEmperorDune I think this might be true here but also water is included as a flat fee in my rent so
Living that watershed life

3:59 PM
@Unionhawk pools are actually not much more water hungry than lawns
We had scientists do the math
Unless you are like draining and refilling it daily or something dumb like that
But like replacing evaporation is not much water

these look pretty simple to manufacture

> Staff stopping Trump from striking compromise with Dems to end shutdown
> "Another weekend not being able to golf and he’ll fold like a cheap Trump suit."

"hilary.krieger: Yes, that is my view too. But also, embracing a more extreme, confrontational, tea party-style politics seems to be what the Democratic base wants, and this may motivate them more."
She's talking about @Unionhawk you all :P He's famous!
(It motivates me more too!)

ALL  ELEVEN  MILLION

@puzzlepiece87 ugh i am so done with the equating of left groups with extreme right and fetishizing centrists
the overton window is a thing
and this shtudown fight was entirely avoidable

4:06 PM
Oh yeah when they think extreme they think
idk
chuck schumer

"1. Democrats are frustrated with Trump and feel like he is weak and can be beaten on every issue"

so to reopen the govt, the dem's main ask is for the GOP to unfuck up things they intentionally messed up months ago, CHIP and DACA

@GodEmperorDune Sensible.

@GodEmperorDune I agree with you. Separately, I'd say that I myself and a few people here are somewhat extreme.

sure, people in the base can be extreme, but i don't see any dem senators as remotely far left as the tea party senators are far right

4:09 PM
right

@Unionhawk No, left.

I mean the best we got on the left in any national capacity is Sanders
And a handful of others are decent

@Unionhawk It's like someone did clipart

@Arperum up?

@KevinvanderVelden That's most certainly not what the US is doing, that's more like down.

4:10 PM
@Unionhawk sanders isn't even that left

@Arperum maybe they're trying to go up and got the map wrong

far left like tea party far right would be someone advocating in the senate for dismantling the patriarchy and capitalism

"perry: I think Anna disagrees here, but I have always expected Trump to have to eventually adopt some kind of DACA policy, because the concept behind DACA (people brought to the U.S. as young children should not be under any risk of deportation) is very popular."

Usually perry is the person on the team I agree with most, but I have noooo idea why he thinks Trump would be forced to do anything positive for minorities.
The man literally got elected on an enflamed base, not general appeal.

N.C. doughnut-eating champion is arrested again, accused of breaking into Dunkin' Donuts. http://apne.ws/t0yhhY8'

@puzzlepiece87 Perry... Former Governor of Texas, Perry?
Or Perry, Tyler?

No, perry one of the 538 team members
They do a thing where they talk on Slack and then just post the transcript
It's like a podcast except, not, a podcast

ouf
that's shitty...

4:30 PM
tfw you accidentally give money to the poor

@fredley ikr

That's a lot of money
For some people

use a community bank instead of hoarding cash in a fake soup can
i dunno

Or just don't lose your soup can
It sucks that it happened to them

i mean this has been a plotline in sitcoms for a while

4:34 PM
@cazc_941 It was probably even more money for the people that found it

@fredley So? It still sucks
Like yeah at least it wasn't lost to the ether forever but still

@cazc_941 It sucks for the people that lost the money, it probably made the year of the people that found it
The overall happiness in the world probably went up

If I lost my wallet and somebody found it and took the $100 that was in it, is that a gain for the world

@cazc_941 Depends, are they richer or poorer than you? If they're poorer yes.

lol that's not how that works

4:36 PM
It kinda is, from a raw utilitarian standpoint

what if they were saving for a car or something
ah whatever I don't even know why im arguing about this
feel bad for those people

i feel bad that poverty is so bad in this rich country that people have to personally donate to keep each other afloat

FWIW I agree with @cazc_941, at least for people below the "lol money doesn't matter to me because I have a metric shitton of it" level
Since there's a lot of complexity there
But I also agree with @GodEmperorDune that keeping that kind of cash around is just bad >_>

well yeah

4:39 PM
Motion to censure @fredley for his dumb Shen reference tbh

wat

@GodEmperorDune I'm with you and @fredley on this one.

5 mins ago, by fredley
The overall happiness in the world probably went up

@Unionhawk What's Shen?

Oh so you accidentally that one "my bike got stolen" comic
That's pretty amazing

4:41 PM
@cazc_941 i'm just giving you an extra hard time on this, it's bad for all around

Oh that Shen
I think I have seen that comic, but it was a while ago

well yeah whoever found it is probably pretty happy

@Unionhawk That's a pretty basic sentence/conclusion from basic understanding of utilitarianism... Amazing?

Listen, my brain is poisoned by online

4:42 PM
Just imagine if the news article was written from a different perspective.

> Soup kitchen volunteers elated after finding $2,500 in can of soup.

And a motion without a second sees no further discussion so by roberts rules of order

Uhh actually they do not need the answer to that question

RIP US Government

@TimStone it is an important question for Rs though because they absolutely cannot reverse blame if he vetoes it

4:44 PM
Btw I hope the incident doesn't RIP that couple's marriage or anything.

So they aren't going to pass anything at risk of veto

@Unionhawk What's the longest shutdown to date?

@Unionhawk Yeah but they don't have to answer it they just lack the will to deal with the consequences

21 days

Was that 03 or 13

4:46 PM
'13 was only 16 days I think

@TimStone 'only'
inb4 Trump goes golfing during a government shutdown

Can't launch without the static fire first. This is why we can't have nice things.

@fredley He's still trying to go to Davos on Friday at least

@TimStone lol

@MBraedley Obviously need to privatise more things then this wouldn't be an issue
@Gallifreyan wtf

Seemed like a great header image for this room, given its name, if Stack chat rooms had header images

🤔
Now someone photoshop Trump into it, and try and get it printed in a national newspaper

@fredley (SpaceX is a private contractor already)

@Unionhawk I know, obviously hobbled by the inefficiencies of Governmetn

4:53 PM
Broke: NHS, woke: Virgin Health

@Unionhawk hahahaha

lol

words fail to express my utter lack of surprise

A review of bills Chris Christie vetoed that New Jersey Dems will likely advance quickly now that they control government: paid family leave expansion, minimum wage increase, automatic voter registration, gun control, & more. http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2018/01/phil_murphy_christie_veto_bills.html
Manchin also suggesting the government will be open by 12:10/15 after emerging from meeting
Which like, even procedurally it will take longer than that but eyeroll

@fredley 'what they don't know, is that that money was given by accident'

@TimStone AVR WOOOO
AVR and same day VR are underrated

5:19 PM
inb4 Democrats sell us downriver as expected in a few minutes

Yeah
But at least NJ will probably get AVR
Schumer is a yes, it's probably over
Schumer warns McConnell though that if he doesn't hold up his end of the deal, he'll be betraying Dems and some of his own members.
trusting mcconnell to own the libs
or something
Welp, yeah, it looks like that's where we're at
Trusting McConnell to uphold his promise he already made to Jeff Flake months ago and never made good on

"Senate has enough votes to approve government funding bill: NBC" - reuters.com/article/us-usa-shutdown-senate-report/…

good luck with that

Isn't that only a month or so they're voting on? So if McConnell doesn't keep his word, he will have only delayed this by a month

I've lost track

5:28 PM
This really makes me grateful that the most dramatic thing to happen in Canadian politics recently is that the PM bumped into someone
ELBOWGATE NEVER FORGET

yeah 3 weeks
Feb 8

I wonder if that means they have to vote on the 8th or on the 9th
Because preventing Trump from a vacation trip last-minute Friday is the tiniest bit of joy we can squeeze out of this
As I’ve said repeatedly over the past week, shutting down the government is an irresponsible way to do business. All of our important business for the American people had to be put on hold while this manufactured crisis was dealt with.

That's... Kind of mean tbh. I mean sure social assistance programs have stopped so people could literally starve, but trump missing his vacation is the REAL tragedy. Not fair to mock him for it.

lol love too be the good faith dealkepper

@TimStone Minus however many years ago...
> shutting down the government is an irresponsible way to do business
But that's exactly how Trump does business. Does he not know about Trump and bankruptcy?

5:41 PM
It's just incredibly frustrating that they're so evil but refuse to just admit it

HOW DARE YOU SAY I'M DOING THIS FOR THE RICH I GREW UP IN THE DEPRESSION AND WORKED MY WAY THROUG HLAW SCHOOL

Like just say "Hahah I don't care I'm running the show" so we can skip the acting

WHO HAS THE GAVEL MISTER BROWN ME OR YOU

I'm gonna need to take a trip to my senators' offices and lie to their face so they can understand how easy it is and why you can't believe anything anyone says

@TimStone i mean he left out how his party manufactured the crisis but accurate otherwise

5:50 PM
Agreement in Senate: gov’t will re-open and Senate will work on big bill: to lift defense/non-defense spending caps; disaster aid; and on immigration/border/DACA. AND If no agreement by February 8, the Senate proceeds to vote on immigration legislation with an amendment process

tbf mcconnell could've held the DACA vote before the reopen govt vote and still found some way to backstab dems

So DACA either makes it into the actual spending bill or gets voted on independently first, I guess?

I don't know
It's probably going to get voted down
lol
fuck

That seems to be the agreement. So there's the tiniest bit of assurance but it's still not something they should have hung their hats on

i mean he pulled this with the tax bill, iirc
susan collins got smoked

5:53 PM
I mean all she really wanted was to be able to say "i tried"

@GodEmperorDune He promised her a vote after her vote, so slightly different but still pretty baseless
Because an actual spending bill still needs to be passed, eventually

@TimStone nah, CRs forever

probably

AFAIK CRs wouldn't allow for new policy though right?
Like it's just a continuance of the current budget?

I don't know, I mean, they passed like a trillion dollars in defense spending before this so?
Or was that technically last fiscal year

5:55 PM
No knows..wat
BREAKING: Ivanka Trump is leading the search to replace John Kelly, reports @GabrielSherman http://vntyfr.com/Hmlo3SH
>_>
But why? He and Miller are surely racist besties

hire clap more clap women clap chiefs clap of clap staff

@TimStone like she is going ot be chief of staff?

possibly

@GodEmperorDune I assume she's just making suggestions
Perverse kudos to McConnell though for being like an anti-TMNT, supervillian-ly finding a way to make people like the Democrats even less

mcconnell is the slickest politician in a very long time

5:59 PM
Ryan, much less so. But he has a wide majority for the moment, so

Find someone who cares about you the way Democrats care about what GOP voters think of them

@TimStone does Ivanka have any actual official positions in the government? Because last I checked she wasn't elected

she is an advisor to the president
or something

We covered this the other day, what was it?
"Assistant to the President" or some nonsense?

Is a president s assigning their children official position in the government a thing that usually happens?

6:02 PM
Ah yeah she is an Advisor

General Kelly standing outside of Kushner's office chanting "You Will Not Replace Me" and insisting it has no other meaning https://twitter.com/VanityFair/status/955491968536203269

@Wipqozn In the same way Presidents making sexual commentary about their childrern is a thing that usually happens

I'm sorry

@TimStone nah ryan comes off as a tool and seems sad that people don't like him
mcconnell literally dgaf
@Wipqozn no, but it's not officially against the law because loopholes

Oh my god
The Hill image person, bless you
JUST IN: Senate votes to end three-day shutdown after McConnell promises immigration vote http://hill.cm/mVOnAhB

6:04 PM
:(

@TimStone yep
sneaky turtle

He's about to bust out laughing at how funny it is anyone would trust him

dems know better, they must be ok with it

@TimStone same

6:07 PM
@GodEmperorDune I genuinely think that most of them, including my Senators, think that Republicans actually give a damn about honour, which I assume means they're all having amnesia and we need medical assistance stat

Good thing they're all on ACA Platinum Deluxe(tm)

The Navy built a ‘fast, agile’ warship for $440M. It’s been stuck in ice since Christmas Eve. http://wapo.st/2mZZtiZ

Actually that's not true
some of them are on medicare

@TimStone or they assume that they will be able to convince swing voters that the republicans are dishonorable when they inevitably betray them and that messaging hasn’t worked for the dems in the past
With the fake news era, I think it will work even less

To me it's more that negative messaging only gets you so far

6:11 PM
I don't think they're that clever. I suspect that in these meetings the Republicans are all "Oh yeah we totally understand" and like they work with these guys and they don't seem so bad and then Oh Wow They Just Shoved Some Children Into That Meatgrinder
