@Ash at times like that i want the Pope to go "seriously, WTF America. like we still think homosexuality is unnatural and that, but at least we're being human about treating them"

I thought the church changed their stance on homosexuality?
I might just be thinking of Canadian churches, which have been performing same sex marriages for a long time now

user15026
@Wipqozn Some flavours have yes

user15026
some have not

OKay, I don't really follow churches in Canada becasue... I mean why would I
but I did know they became more accepting

user15026
Are we speaking all Christian churches here or just Catholic (before I go further)

11:06 PM
@Ash I have no idea
tbh I often forget just how divided Christianity is

user15026
Because like...Mennonites are pretty much a no-go zone

user15026
(I mean progressives, here, sorry)

I know whatever faith my grandmother practices does it, since I remember her telling me about a same sex marriage about 10 years ago she attended.
I was actually super proud of her, because I know she wasn't always accepting of same sex marraige, given when she grew up, but she's completely changed her opinion
I remember her saying it was one of the most beautiful wedding she attended

Mennonite Church Canada did this whole "Being a Faithful Church" thing and basically left it up to individual congregations (and some (cough Maple View Mennonitecough) are super in the "No" category) - and I think most Mennonites kinda land in the "you can be it but we won't marry you but we won't shun you" camp

score one of people who change their views even when their old and grey

Anglican churches seem to be more on board (I've seen a number with rainbow flags and such)

user15026
So yes, some improvement but not as much as I'd like but getting the church as a whole concept to agree on anything is like herding really irritated cats

user15026
(sorry, I have feelings about this crap, I'll see myself out)

@Ash No worries. I have strong feelings about this stuff too, it's just that for me it contributes to why I'm Atheist.

@Wipqozn I don't think there's any room for the catholic church to change their stance there. But there is certainly some room for change in the practical attitude, if not in doctrine

I don't understand the world in which this is necessary

user15026
11:20 PM
@TimStone why this thing

user15026
@Wipqozn For me it mostly results in subscribing to a faith not a religion

user15026
(although I am technically still a member of the Mennonite church, I think)

@MadScientist Not sure if I agree with that. Pretty sure they can just say they've interpreted the faith wrong all this time, that god is all loving, therefore he can't hate homosexuals.

@Wipqozn they can't really change that it's a sin

IIRC most of the stuff on that is from the Old Testament
and is also dubious translationally

user15026
11:22 PM
@quartata You would be correct yes

user15026
@quartata Also this :)

as with most things in the bible you can pretty much pick and choose what you want it to say :/
typical

@TimStone It's the same world where they've never come to grips with their poor 2016 coverage choices.

@Ash To be fair, getting angry at a conservative view of marriage is basically the Anglican Church's raison d'être.

user15026
@quartata Biblical cherrypicking is why we have so many Christianity flavours, yes :)

11:25 PM
*d'etre

user15026
@Yuuki Yep! :)

@quartata and @Ash, no need to go digging, but if you have any convenient links to the dubious translational parts, I'll take them.

I believe it's the Book of Leviticus

Right, and some Paul letters - I have easier access to that
I'm talking about the translation critiques

@MadScientist The old testament used to contain instructions on how to best handle your slaves, and straight up endorses it from what I understand. So I honestly don't buy the "they can't change their stance" argument. They just don't want to.

11:29 PM
@Wipqozn I don't think we're disagreeing. I just think it's much easier to change the opinion of individual church members than changing church doctrine. They're very resistant to any kind of change

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 I don't have any good critiques offhand

user15026
@MadScientist This. I think of it like trying to get people here to change stuff - handfuls of people might agree but causing sitewide change is much much harder

@MadScientist I suppose. I guess it's just impossible for me to understand that kind of mentality.

what on earth
no one is even mentioning it in the replies

@Ash Thanks for replying!

user15026
No problem. I just don't really spend a lot of time in that realm anymore.

11:55 PM
@TimStone what wrong?

JUST IN: Seven GOP senators are co-sponsors of the bipartisan Senate immigration bill that includes #DACA fix and border security package. Graham Flake Gardner Murkowski Collins Rounds Alexander
@Memor-X Main Street is supposed to be indicative of small business but that has nothing to do with large retailer profits
Which are the likely source of those gains
