It's a completely valid question, but Americans also go to the bathroom regularly, even though that's typically omitted from movies unless relevant to the plot or for comedic effect :) — Zach Lipton 26 secs ago

I’m voting to close this question because as per our help center, questions asking us whether something is reasonable, rude, racist etc. are off-topic. Everyone is going to have a different opinion on that, and this site is for questions and answers, not polling others opinions or brainstorming. Take a look at this post and it's answers to see what direction a good question could take. — Tinkeringbell ♦ 1 min ago

This is a great question and something that has irritated me about TV/Films for more than a decade. It just ruins the integrity of the scene imo. I have come to believe over the years that this has evolved as a part of making TV / Films, and that they believe that act of saying 'bye' is too mundane, and so by instead just hanging up, they believe that this adds some element of 'things left unsaid'; a sort of tension / emotionality to the scene. In reality, it's just nonsense and looks daft when you compare it to reality - once you see it, you can't unsee it and it always looks ridiculous. — YorSubs 2 mins ago

Hi @Tinkeringbell, I think you might have misunderstood stood my use of 'reasonable'. I was not asking whether this is right, wrong, rude or racist; I was asking about reasonableness as it relates to understanding the interaction and the etiquette of asking for help. — WithRegards 2 mins ago

I don't see how that differs? You're asking whether something is reasonable, which is similar to asking whether something is right, wrong, rude, or racist. In short, you're asking us whether there is an issue, which the help center states is off-topic. A lot of people misinterpret 'understanding the interaction' as a free for all to just ask 'what did she mean' (which we can't answer, we can't mind-read, and again, asking whether or not there is a problem is off-topic) 1/2 — Tinkeringbell ♦ 30 secs ago

Understanding interactions means as much as asking 'why is a good handshake important', which can be answered with preferably social science, not asking us whether or not it's reasonable to expect a certain way of handshaking (that, again, is asking us to judge, which is off-topic). 2/2 — Tinkeringbell ♦ 2 mins ago

Hi @Tinkeringbell, I can see how it could be confusing in this case. Etiquette assumes there is a set of rules or customs governing accepted behaviour; by asking whether that is reasonable I am asking whether the behaviour is in line with those rules/customs that govern asking for help, not whether the behaviour is morally right or wrong. — WithRegards 2 mins ago

Still, this site is not here to judge whether someone else's behavior is in line with rules of etiquette, that's simply not what the site is for. I don't know how many ways I can/need to put that: We're not here to put out a verdict on someone else's behavior, whether that's about morality or the letter of the rules. What problem are you trying to solve by asking us to do so? You already know sharing would be academic misconduct... — Tinkeringbell ♦ 1 min ago

Hey YorSubs! It seems you're quite busy 'discussing' how movies treat phone conversations, while this is a site about Interpersonal Skills. As such, both the question and the answers should focus on interpersonal skills and interactions, and not as much on the movies. If I were to edit your post, all that's left is the sentence "However, as we all know, in almost 100% of situations, people do say 'bye' at the end of a phone call, and it would be almost unthinkable not to ", which is a duplicate of the first posted answer. 1/2 — Tinkeringbell ♦ 17 secs ago

As we try to avoid having duplicate answers, it's probably better for this post to either be substantially edited (focus on the interpersonal skills only and not repeat the first answer) or deleted. I am sorry you encountered this post on the HNQ list and realize you just wanted to help out, it was not a good post to be on there as it's definitely one of those questions where the details and talk about movies distracts from the actual topic of the site (the behavior people use to interact well with others). 2/2 — Tinkeringbell ♦ 1 min ago

Also: why are you not writing this comment on the many other answers here which discuss the realism of film. Why are you focusing on mine? Please read the first meta post I linked you! On a good subjective site, what you 'believe' doesn't matter, and answers should stick to the question asked, not discuss matters tangential to the question (see the section on 'the larger picture') Like I said, this should've never ended up in HNQ and gave you the impression that such behavior was okay, but all I can do now is try to clean up the mess it left one answer at a time... — Tinkeringbell ♦ 2 mins ago

Literally every answer on here discusses matter tangential to the question - please, go and look. Literally every one. No offence, but honestly, I don't think you need to worry about this. Why not just let people talk? Where is the offence exactly? Why do you feel that you need to clean everything up. People should be allowed to explore ideas (even if we stray a little). You don't need to clean anything up. You see that, right? — YorSubs 1 min ago

@YorSubs No, I don't see things that way, and I honestly think you might want to take a few breaths before we continue talking, as you're coming across as quite agitated right now. To get this back into shape, it would help if you could edit your answer to get rid of the list of fun movie facts (I liked reading them, but they have to go, sadly) and just state that the movies are wrong, people do say goodbye or thanks depending on the context of the call. 2/2 — Tinkeringbell ♦ 39 secs ago
