Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a detailed response. I agree social media isn't a good way to maintain a friendship. But this leads to a Catch-22 situation: it's hard to strengthen a friendship without meeting in person. And without at least a basic friendship, I imagine it would be weird to ask someone to meet up or even ask for their phone number. Is there a good way to break the cycle? Or are some friendships not meant to be? — Danny Chia 36 secs ago

@EmC Hi, and thanks for the feedback. To be honest, this answer simply builds a little on top of the other one I mentioned. I'm surprised it could be read as a kind of "try this" approach, when from my point of view it contains specific advice and even indicates what's noteworthy about it. Nevertheless, I made an edit hoping to improve further. Not sure I can do better than that; at least not right now, I'm afraid. — Marc.2377 1 min ago

"I still haven't received anything back, and the fact that my own brother doesn't pay me back money I need is hurtful" is passive-aggressive (contains an accusation and resentful demand). "You seem to have enough money to go on vacations and buy a new car" is accusatory and disapproving of someone else's decisions; while related to the matter at hand, could be avoided. "or because it is the decent thing to do" more passive-agressive, indirectly calls other person as indecent. "but because people remember" makes assumptions about someone else's future decisions and is also threatening. — Marc.2377 1 min ago

Also adding to what was said in the other Comments: "Anyone can share their thoughts and experiences that will be much appreciated." Is not just a bad Question format on this SE, but on every SE. As there is a lot of emphasize on SE being an Q&A platform and not a forum. We don't appreciate 'sharing opinions' and want specific questions that can receive specific answers. — dhein 32 secs ago

@DannyChia You got to ask yourself how people managed to make friends before social media. Long distance relationships / friendships are not anything new. Some people got married after nothing but writing letters to one another. If you are talking about people with whom you already have a real-life connection, no matter how vague, then I don't believe it is unusual to say "hey, we should keep in touch. Do you have a mobile number?", at least not in Western culture. — Astralbee 1 min ago

There is nothing wrong with children dressing up however they want for play, especially in the carnival season. There is nothing that the child is "appropriating" from anyone. No Native Americans' feelings were hurt. Hence, there was no need for the mother to intervene, and there's no need for you to lecture her on the topic (or, in the passive-aggressive version, "suggest she learn more about it"). Doing so would be indeed have been judgmental, as you said. Let it go, and try not to see everything as problematic. — Richard Metzler 44 secs ago

"Mostly because I don't know them and I don't know how they will respond." - this is your problem - how they will respond is actually not something you should be concerned with; you shouldn't be trying to anticipate how they will respond basing your actions around that, you should just "be yourself" and talk as if they would respond favourably; yes, you will find that you don't click with certain people who don't respond favourably, but that's the point; that's how you know they're not a suitable match for you. It's a good thing when this happens. — ESR 1 min ago

thanks. I was about to post another question, "Tactics to engage in deeper conversation despite little or no knowledge in the subject matter". Because I know someone who's facing a similar discussion while applying and being interviewed for job in a new industry. When the interviewer starts describing really advance subject matter, my friend is worried her questions will expose her ignorance on the matter, and discredit her in the eyes of the employer. @eirikdaude I took it more as allowing the boyfriend to broach the subject since he, I assume, knows the lady better and is better equipped to hand the conversation. Or, the boyfriend could make it seem that he noticed it and not the friend. It's more acceptable for a boyfriend to seem to be gawking instead of a friend. — Lux Claridge 1 min ago
