@uhoh If you read through, I was never questioning that tides are more complex than the basic picture or that tides at some locations can't be explained by a simple tidal bulge. My qualm was with the statement that tidal bulges don't exist.
@zephyr yep I see what you mean. I remember seeing very simplistic pictures a zillion years ago when I was in school where the ocean was drawn as a layer of water completely covering a smooth Earth-ball with two giant bulges sticking out. It was planted in my head so early and so firmly that I never questioned it.
I just like this GIF so much that I look for places to use it. :)
