Q: In dating, how to express preference that they listen to my answer after asking question

notmySOaccountI am a 32 yo American woman. I have noticed, anecdotally, that the majority of men I've been on dates with (age range: 26-50) can't focus on what I'm saying for even 10 seconds. Usually they ask me a question, but look away or even physically walk away as soon as I start answering. Their attentio...

I'm getting the backyard paved next Monday... Finally, no more mud puddle and I'll be able to hang the laundry outside on dry days! :D

Should be finished by Wednesday. Going to cost a few 10s of euros extra to have them come back later to finish making everything to size once the veranda is finished and fences are up, but since the veranda will arrive late June and I think this means we won't have fences before late August...

10s of euros dosen't sound too bad

It least it's not going to be hundreds :)
And yeah, not bad at all knowing the quality of life I'll get for it :)

8:59 AM
lol yup

Q: Is this headed for divorce?

Silent_GmMy wife and I got married in August 2021, then immediately moved to different geographic locations for career and schooling reasons, with a plan to join in the same city in summer 2022. I was paying her rent and sending her money for food. We were calling every night. My wife started to miss the ...

Yes, we shall separate that question from our site.

Today is veeery slow. Have a riddle:
Try to figure out which numbers go on the dotted lines. And lemme know how long it took you to figure out (without spoiling the answer!)
(apparently, an old school teacher of mine had a student come up to her saying she didn't understand this assignment, and the teacher had to think hard too)

@Tinkeringbell its easier if you do electrionics :D

I don't do electronics but I did find this 'childishly' simple too :P

MiG
got that one pretty fast :)

Hmm. Not sure if that reflects well on the teacher then :P

2:58 PM
@Tinkeringbell one's too old for calculators, one's too young? :D

Hahaha not sure. We did get 'calculator excercises', and I think that was when I was in her class too!

MiG
:D

I would've loved excercises/puzzles like this as extra work though, back when I was in school. Most of my extra work just was more 'story sums'

MiG
these things help expand the mental 'box' that most of us are stuck in a bit, every kid should be doing them

3:22 PM
Well 'every' kid is probably a bit too much of an ask. But definitely, the ones that have the mental capabilities to do so, should :)

MiG
4:19 PM
best way to find those is to get them to do tests like these :)

Fair point, getting kids to try once or twice probably won't hurt.

MiG
just gotta make sure you don't discourage them, just because you don't do well with tests like these doesn't mean you can't shine in other ways... reason I like the Finnish concept of having EVERY teacher, including primary school, be university educated

Still... in a sense I think the current school climate over here is pretty f-ed (I'm only observing second-hand though, no kids of my own but know people with kids!). If you see how much they have to do and learn and know and be capable of, and how much pressure there is to get a 'good' (havo or vwo) advice...

MiG
that means kids at every stage of their life are guided by highly educated educators
@Tinkeringbell I think people are looking at asia and trying to push their kids in the same direction... bad idea imo
I can tell from our PhD students there is a huge difference in problem solving capacities between products of the NL and CN education systems

Yep. Really bad idea, we need garbagemen too and it's a waste of public money to educate those in university :P

MiG
4:25 PM
ouch :x

Not serious ;)

MiG
sorry, first reaction was a cringe :)

If someone wants to and can go to university before becoming a garbageman, they definitely should. I wasted the same money by studying archaeology ;)
@MiG It is probably the best way to get politicians to suddenly start romanticising the job of garbageman though :P

MiG
I try to stay away from politics tbh, too many shiny-but-missing-the-mark-oneliners :P

I'm slowly getting the hang of those shiny-but-missing-the-mark-oneliners! Like those math puzzles, they're fun to come up with :P
And they stimulate out of the box thinking!

MiG
4:28 PM
there's this quote from The West Wing on education that I love: medium.com/@jdunns4/…
@Tinkeringbell waitaminute...
ARE YOU A POLITICIAN?
/me sloooowly inches towards box with rotten tomatoes

Of course not. I'm a moderator on the internet, it's even worse ;)

MiG
(don't ask me about the box with rotten tomatoes)
@Tinkeringbell true :D

I do ask about the box with rotten tomatoes. Now what?

MiG
well... ask and you shall receive :P
/me throws volley

Can't be worse than regular tomatoes.
Rotten tomatoes are good, it means they're almost GONE, out of this world, no longer existing.

MiG
4:30 PM
I suppose no bruises is nice, but the smell...
on a completely off topic note... Do you know Tom Waes?
thank to him I found out there's a Dutch guy who builds automatic potato cannons :D
ah dammit, can't find the link... turns out there are a lot of people that have solved this particular lack in technology now :d

I think I've heard the name once or twice, but I don't usually keep track of all the bn-ers :)

MiG
Flemish guy who does a very very off-the-beaten-track travel show - goes to hotbeds of tourism like Chernobyl and South-Sudan :x

Ah, that's where I probably know the name from too, yeah.
I don't really watch travel shows.

MiG
this one is pretty interesting, no sandy beaches and coconut drinks for mr. Waes :)

;-) I watched 'dark tourist' on Netflix, is it comparable? :D
Dark Tourist is a New Zealand documentary series about the phenomenon of dark tourism, presented by journalist David Farrier. The series, which was released by Netflix, has eight episodes. == Episodes == == References == == External links == Dark Tourist on Netflix Dark Tourist at IMDb

MiG
4:42 PM
lol no, that sounds... dark :D
this is very upbeat, and you can visit most of the places he does... they're just very... unconventional :)

I mean, the point of the 'dark tourist' series was that you can visit those places too... there's a whole tourism branch around those 'dark' things ;)

MiG
he actually went to NL during covid :)

Hahaha
When half this country went to Belgium, I bet :P

MiG
it's more of a 'weird' thing I think... I haven't watched all the episodes yet, but apparently he goes to the NATO bombing range on Vlieland :D
lol yeah :D
just the intro puts you in a good mood, they basically put this incredibly upbeat whistling song on top of all the outtakes and bloopers :D

Hahaha. Well, I don't think I'll have time to watch any soon, but I will try to keep the good reviews in mind ;)

Q: If I know my interlocutor native language, it is approprieate to respond them using it?

AtresmoI got an email in English from a staff member which turns out that speaks the same native language as me (which is not English) it would be rude to respond to the email in my native language?
