Morning!

6:53 AM
Morning!

2 hours later…
9:04 AM
awkward. Where's everyone today?!

working? drinking coffee? :P

Probably!
I should work too.
But people keep interrupting me.

I see

I just came up with a question for main :P

Yaay :P IPS needs some good questions xD
I'm currently setting things up for the department weekly meeting
this afternoon

9:09 AM
Yeah I have a meeting at 12.
But that doesn't need much setting up.

Good thing xD

Q: How to gently turn down digital small-talk and prevent any new attempts at having it?

TinkeringbellThe corona virus has everybody working from home. And it seems all of management is recommending to 'stay in contact', to talk with each other digitally. Which may be fun, when it's actually planned and doesn't interrupt work. In this case, my team has already have lengthened our daily standup to...

Talk about not being able to concentrate XD

:P
I'm not going to work from home anytime soon i guess
I barely talk at work :P

That's good :P
I usually am very good at limiting the distractions to lunch break... but it seems no one has a sense of time anymore.

Do you use DND (Do not disturb) for any instance?

@CaldeiraG See footnote ;)
> More technical solutions like turning off the chat clients aren't an option, my team lead wants me to be available on chat clients in case of work related things happening. The same goes for putting it on 'occupied' or 'absent' for the whole day, people start ignoring it because if it's there the whole day, it can't be true, you've probably forgotten to change your status

Ah, i totally missed that one lol

9:59 AM
anything that blocks people from contacting me on chat clients isn't allowed, and anything softer just has them contacting me anyways :(

lol, that's why i missed it
@Tinkeringbell :(

@CaldeiraG It'll be okay, but I'd love to see if people can come up proper expectation management techniques ;)

12:20 PM
@CaldeiraG this is so relatable.. When I'm sitting in the cafe with my laptop and someone stops by, I handle it by politely and often jokingly say that don't feel forced to sit.. I'm comfortable alone

:P better off alone

@Tinkeringbell People are used to me being terse on chat.
At work, on the clock, I am a chatty one

I've tried to be terse.. 'how are you' 'fine' 'here too, but bladiblah'... I think I just really messed up by talking too much with them about not-work stuff at work, though it's really just lunch breaks.

AH, I don't ever on chat :D
In person "GEEK! DID YOU FIND A GIRL?"
In person: (fun holiday near quarantine story)

12:35 PM
I dunno. I hope I can get rid of it, it wrecks my days. Just assume I everytime I'm chatting here, or modding something... I was just brutally jerked from my concentration span by a non-work-related-work-chat-message :/

On chat: "No. Not yet. Still looking"

And you can kinda see...
How often that is :(
@JourneymanGeek Still looking? Pffft. Taking long.
:P

@Tinkeringbell Corona might be a help or a hinderance
Moving will be difficult. I'm feeling like a horrible person for thinking this, but the economy tanking might be helpful

Meh, you're not the only one hoping that the economy tanking has good consequences.

Economical crisis here will be even worse than the 2009 one, the news said

12:45 PM
Yeah, same here. They're predicting more inflation than in '08

@CaldeiraG folks were comparing it to the great depression :/

> Adverse scenario: Portuguese economy is expected to experience a deeper recession, with GDP dropping by 5.7% in 2020
@JourneymanGeek :/

And I don't feel like I'd want to have a benefit from that, even for something that's not moved in 3 years

I'm mainly hoping it means a.) properly funded healthcare b.) people realizing they can't have everything and c.) more work from home because this is showing it's really possible.

@Tinkeringbell apparently we need to wear masks at work
I'm trying to talk myself out of one of those fancy ones with active cooling :D

12:47 PM
Maybe. We'll see. I don't think they'll get people to do that over here.
They're basically breeding grounds for bacteria. But so is an office...

@Tinkeringbell 300 dollar fine too ._.

@JourneymanGeek some are using here but very few

@Tinkeringbell ya, mine stinks.

I'll see. If I can work from home more, and get that thing with coworkers pinging me solved, I'm going to be happy :)

I wash it after every use and dry it but after a few hours its rank
and ... the place where I wanted to buy spares is closed cause its non essential :D

12:49 PM
Realistically, without a vaccine until early 2021 you're vulnerable either way and even if economy restarts and everybody goes out it will once again increase cases

Yeah. I don't think we can safely go out before we have a vaccine.

Schools are closed here until the next school year which is september
School is giving my sisters institutional email accounts because soon enough they will start using MS Teams for remote classes
My backup laptop broke off so now one of my sisters uses a 10-year old pc lol
bad luck i guess

I don't know about schools here. I can imagine them just remaining closed too, they've already said people supposed to graduate this year will graduate without state exams, so their school exams determine if they graduate or not. There's talk of special exams to make up grades that are too low though, which I think implies some kind of classes and going to school to take the exam?

@Tinkeringbell I used to want more work from home. After 5 weeks (I think that's how long it's been) of this, I've actually been finding it harder to work from home
My coworkers are pretty good about not walking up and interrupting me for trivial things, but my wife and dog aren't

Ah, yeah. My mom and brother learned quickly. We now have an agreement that I may be called for lunch + tea in the afternoon, and that's it.

12:58 PM
@Tinkeringbell not sure but yea
@Tinkeringbell that's great

That sounds nice
The dog has to be watched constantly when she's out of her cage, she'll randomly walk up and start nipping at my feet, and my wife will just start talking out of the blue about XYZ

1:15 PM
@Tink, looking at your drone question the mavic mini looks really nice and it's 249g, free of registration but it's 399€ :o xD
I would want it to be honest xD

I don't want to crash 400 euros, to be honest XD

same :p

I had actually expected that to be closed, it doesn't exactly meet the stuff the e-mail mentions the site should be about. But pro-tip: Keep the drones talk in the drones chatroom. It can probably use the traffic and teambuilding ;)

yep, i'll do it next time

Q: Horrid Neighbours

Launa ThompsonI live alone in a Victorian house that's been converted into flats. I live downstairs, they live above me. It's supposed to be a 2 bed flat but there's about 5 or 6 men up there, sometimes I hear young children running around up there also. None of the people seem to work, there's somebody up th...

@ExtrovertedMainMan Tough but should I do question
Best option is to call the police
brazil is manipulating coronavirus cases for political reasons. How can out of 26k confirmed cases, 16k already recovered?
They probably just waited 14 days and declared those persons as recovered
Portugal on the other hand has 18k cases and only 383 recovered (the patient needs to have 2 negative tests to be considered recovered)

Q: How should I allow my girlfriend to treat me?

Keith FormosaMy girlfriend treats in a very demeaning way... We have had issues in our relationship because I suffer from ED and she had issues with my family which were somewhat resolved.. some months ago I decided to visit a doctor to seek help for my condition and didn't tell her as I was afraid she would ...

3:57 PM
evening

Hey :)

How's parrot life going?
I thought shifts would be the only problem but now the bosses are playing us out against each other

Like telling the other shift, "oh, well Magisch did X amount of work today"?

no more in a lord of the flies kind of scenario
they told me to start documenting what my coworkers do and learn that too
completely ignoring the fact we talk about everything in our team and it's entirely transparent what they're trying to do

@Magisch Parrot life has been good :) Real life a bit less so, I got so little work done today :( But I'll hopefully catch up tomorrow.

4:03 PM
so now I have a multidimensional social situation to deal with at work too
to be honest I want to go home and scream in my pillow then go to bed

Yeah, that sounds like a mess :(

4:26 PM
heh
at least there
is some drama free social interaction here in chat

drama free? :P Be careful what you wish for :P

@Tinkeringbell is it bad that i want to go up and pet them?
I assume thats disallowed or at least ill advised
I could totally see myself cuddling the lil cows :)

Yeah, no petting allowed. The official sign says you have to keep 25 meters of distance... but they come up pretty close sometimes there's no avoiding them...

I cycle by a farm every morning

The little ones are very cuddly! But you can see how they're all moved to the 'other' side of the big cows, for protection ;)

4:36 PM
the chickens are definitely pettable

This one is blurry, but it does show how close by the cows went...

and the cows always look so friendly, even though I've never been really close to them

I'm guessing the big cows wouldnt be too happy if someone went up and cuddled the little cows

These are very laid back too, you can basically just walk right past them, as long as you keep your hand to yourself and never try to walk between mom and little ones.
Oh, definitely not.

4:39 PM
The chickens near my place have no care for humans whatsoever
you can pet them, cuddle them, most of them are even used to being picked up

That's so nice!

there's also a horse riding operation and to nobody's surprise the housed horses are very nice also
you're allowed to feed them apples if you wash the apples first

:D It's almost like they like being taken good care of?

there's a "beware of the dog" sign

Because he'll cuddle you to death?

4:42 PM
the dog is a big burly german shepherd who I'm firmly convinced is unable to hurt anyone
will come up to you and play fetch or go for pets

Heh. My grandpa used to go from farmer to farmer picking up livestock back when young... He tells this story of a farmer telling the big dog to 'go get him' and he was jumped/licked :P

although it is kind of scary the first couple of times when there's a unleashed german shepherd running excitedly towards you
little do you know he wants to make friends
the cows have an electric fence so I never got to see one really up close but usually they just moo at you a lot

The farmers over here sometimes have open days, and there's usually a calf or two you can pet, sometimes also the big cows.
I think cowcuddling is a thing here.

it should be
animals in general can be so nice. I'm still convinced the crows have some sort of hive mind going on
like they remember who feeds them

Costs on the first google hit: 47.50 euros for a single person, for about three hours, which includes tea and stuff so it's not even all spent cudding a cow :P

4:50 PM
I get along with animals a lot better then with humans usually
animals are rather easy to read and a lot of them are nice to you by default

Hmm. Depends on the kind of animal, I do not very much like dogs, they are loud. Same goes for chickens and roosters. I like giant rabbits though. Fluffy and dog sized, yet no noise! :D

most dogs I know aren't overly loud
like the havanese terrier we have in the office is completely silent
the farm dog is a bit loud when he's excited, but nothing too bad

Hmm. I must know the wrong ones then, you know... those that keep me awake at night/early mornings? :P

I'm immune to that kind of stuff, too many years of living right next to the railway track or heavy goods manufacturing
I'd like to see and cuddle a giant rabbit someday

If I get one, I'll let you know. You can decide if that's worth coming over ;)

3 hours later…
8:13 PM
@Magisch I'll reply to your email with more details. But the doc that you wrote is something that is very much in our active planning. As you know, it is a sizeable project, so requires more dedicated time for a dev to do, thus needs to be planned out more in advance. But it has not been forgotten (and anything that you add, either to your doc or to mine, will be seen).

@YaakovEllis Thanks for the update! as I stated, I don't put this on you at all. I know how you have a million plates spinning right now and are very busy :)
I'm very much available for further questions or in case anything develops on the topic, I just can't do much on it until then
(it's an odd hour for me to be online but I got late shift this week so still at work)

9:11 PM
Can I haz roast doc??
