Q: How to get an employee to think more independently?

user56834I have an employee (my first), and I give them tasks to do. However, often they will do the task in a way that officially meets the description I gave but doesn't exactly do what I want, because I was thinking about it in a way that was implicit but obvious to me. It seems to me that what is...

1:02 PM
@ExtrovertedMainMan I find this question very interesting. I think I can answer part of it, but I would really enjoy reading other answers as well

1:23 PM
@Ælis Short answer: The job now basically involves making implicit things explicit, so do that.
Instead of expecting the employee to do so... you can mention you're struggling with it, and ask them to encourage you... but it's not really their job.

Yep, definitively that (even if it's only partially where my answer is going)

I'd wait a bit actually... there's pretty little about how they've given their feedback so far, and it could really do with an example of stuff they thought was implicit but not picked up on by the employee..
So it's a very easy conclusion to make but ... well... I can't be sure yet ;)

Well, my answer is more a "here are all the things that you definitively shouldn't do" with a little of "doing that might work". So I don't think an example/edit to the question would change my answer

Ah... hmmm.
We're technically still a site for 'things that work'. Otherwise we can go write answers to each question that say 'I definitely know that shooting this person doesn't solve your problem' ;)

I probably wasn't clear enough x) It's more a "my last manager screamed at me which wasn't giving the result he wanted but my new manager does that instead and it's working better"

1:38 PM
Ahhh that sounds a bit better yeah ;)

But yeah, "shooting this person doesn't solve the problem" x)

XD
It's a bit of an extreme example but... it's also a very clear one, one that makes it clear that asking 'what should I do' isn't very great, but also illustrates that answering what you shouldn't do isn't all that good either all the time :P

Yeah, the list of all the things you shouldn't do can be pretty long indeed x)

Pfft, just 3 more crochet squares to sew in ends, then to put the colors in Ravelry and add them to the project, and put the squares on the blocking board...

Then I can go fold laundy! :/

Good luck with your laundry then. On my end, I have some dishes to wash. It's been a week since I haven't washed anything and I can't postpone again because I don't really have dishes left x)

1:47 PM
My laundry? :P That'd be feasible, that would be 3 pairs of underpants and a towel or two...

I'm stuck doing the stuff from mom/dad/brother too, so there's about 20 underpants, 15 pairs of socks, 4/5 pants, and a full load of towels (usually 15-20)...
I hate folding that much laundry in one go :/
@Ælis Oof, that's probably no fun either..

@Tinkeringbell I can understand that. I usually don't mind doing laundry but I don't really fold it ^^' I just sort things which I find kind of fun because I like sorting things but, yeah, the folding part isn't that much interesting (which is why I don't really do it ^^)

Perhaps I can get away with not folding stuff too when I have my own place ;)
At least, laundry will be one/two small loads on weekends, not a neverending stream of it...

@Tinkeringbell If you don't really mind crumpled garment, you could definitively do
@Tinkeringbell I only do one big load a month x) (yeah, I have 30 sockets and panties ^^)

Well, we usually just kinda shake our clothes out really hard, when they come out of the washing machine? Then we already put the shirts on hangers to dry, and the pants on a line... usually, that means there's almost no wrinkles in anything.

But the small stuff needs folding, just so we have space to put up new laundry to dry, and mom doesn't want unfolded stuff in the closets :P
@Ælis That's a really really big load... I guess I prefer smaller ones. Don't take as much time to hang and fold :D

@Tinkeringbell Your mom probably shouldn't take a look in my closet then, it's really horrible x) Sometimes I would take an afternoon to sort and fold every clothes I own but after that, I just go back to my regular self of not folding anything and my closet quickly become a mess again

1:58 PM
Hey!

Oh, my mom dislikes a lot... :P I wouldn't waste too much energy on pleasing my mom :P
@brug Hello!

@Tinkeringbell I too prefer smaller ones, but I don't own a washing machine so it cost less if I just do one big per month (preferably at my parents/grandparents house so that I don't have to pay anything :p )

gah I hate folding laundry.

@brug Yello! :D

In a house of 4 I do 1 large load of laundry a day.

1:59 PM
I personally believe the right way to handle laundry is seperate bins for each sort

@Ælis Ah! You don't hear that often anymore, that people don't own one and have to pay for laundry! That makes a lot of sense then :)

@brug Oh, my dear Oo

and one for dirties :D

If I miss a day it can quickly get overwhelming...

@JourneymanGeek We have that!
@brug Yep, we've been 5 for quite a while and now 4, but laundry needs to be done basically every day...

2:00 PM
@brug That's why I basically never fold mine :p

I suspect FHMG might disagree :D

Or, like now, just do 2 loads in a single day and tell your kid to fold all of it ;)
Future H? Miss Geek?

@Tinkeringbell almost old enough. That experiement doesn't go too well yet.

Hypothetical, Mrs
I think a little miss geek is a little premature :D

Hey, I'm glad I already figured out at least the direction that abbreviation should go :P

2:01 PM
@Tinkeringbell I'm kind of sad to not have my own, but instilling one in my current apartment would be difficult and I'm not sure about how long I will stay there, so I'm doing without for now

@Tinkeringbell its a long running joke :D

@JourneymanGeek Titles aren't my best, in English. But yeah, Mrs is married, miss isn't ;)

@JourneymanGeek The solution to that is to continue doing the laundry. If you are the one doing it it doesn't matter if she disagrees

@Tinkeringbell Ms can work for either. Some girls like Mz
@brug I don't mind doing laundry
and our system for air drying is wierd for someone not in singapore
(we dry clothes on poles)

We don't air dry. We prolly should...

2:03 PM
most places use lines

@JourneymanGeek I know, never seen the abbreviation before though ;) You always took the time to write it out!

@Tinkeringbell true :D

@Ælis When I get behind this is what happens for weeks

@Ælis Makes sense :D

@brug See, this is the way to go :p

2:05 PM
But when my clothes are burried with 3 others peoples it gets very hard to find.
And then the kids are late for school cause I didn't pull out a uniform the night before... :[
My new plan is to just throw out used clothes and buy new ones.

Hah, in a time where every other article is writing about how we should repair our clothes, or trade them/get them second-hand because we apparently only wear them 7 times on average?

@brug I had the same issue when I was still leaving at my parents'. The trick is to sort them (make differents pile for different people) but, well, the folding isn't that important :p

@Ælis yeah that could work...

@Tinkeringbell ....
Mine tend to get worn till they don't fit, or the fabric gives out

@Tinkeringbell I only joke about intentional unethical consumption. ;]

2:08 PM
@brug I know ;) That was sarcasm :P
@JourneymanGeek Same here...

I know
@JourneymanGeek same

(and I have a few items of clothing from my teens for sentimental value :D)

I wish I could be a bit better at repairing stuff though.

@JourneymanGeek Same, but it drives my mother crazy. Because I would "always wear the same things"

I can crochet pretty well, but I've never been able to sew/repair something...

2:09 PM
@Ælis I'm not allowed to buy black shirts.
@Tinkeringbell I can fix things, but its rarely pretty :D
I learnt to sew/repair dog toys using dental floss :D

I fixed a few of my brother's favorite plushies when I was younger... but only because mom refused and it certainly didn't look pretty.

@Tinkeringbell My favorite plushy is worn out too much for it to be fixed anymore. It breaks my heart but I don't know what to do. Mending can only go so far (and trust me, he already has a lot of fixing done on him)

@Ælis That's why parents usually get a second plushie that looks exactly the same :P
But yeah, that sucks. Put the plushy in a good spot to look at, but don't touch anymore?

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, but I already lost one version of him when I was little, so I have no back up anymore :'(

@Ælis Maybe some internet stranger has one lying around ... you hear that sometimes...

2:17 PM
@Tinkeringbell Nah, can't do that. I probably keep it by my side until there is nothing left of him anymore

@Ælis At least he was loved to death <3

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, but how do you find them? Do you google "pink horse with blue stars"? It doesn't really give the results I'm interested in
@Tinkeringbell Yeah <3 :'( <3

@Ælis Do you have an average of how old he is, and does he have a brand you know?

@Tinkeringbell No brand :/ But he was probably buy in 1995

What does he look like? :D
I think the closest I get to your description is this:
user image
2

2:26 PM
@Tinkeringbell It's him! <3

Those are from 1991, so it doesn't seem too farfetched to have people buy one in '95 :)

How did you do that? Do you have magicall powers???

@Ælis 1995 horse plush pink in google ;)
Then scroll through the results a bit ;)
Came across an image with a description.
He's a Fisher Price puffalump horse, goes for around $75 or more on Ebay

@Tinkeringbell I think I love you right now <3

I love me too :D
I like doing stuff like this :)

2:29 PM
@Tinkeringbell That's good, keep doing that! :D

Hahaha :)

@Tinkeringbell I'm very glad I talk to you about this then :D
Also, chat won't let me upload picture from my computer ><

Probably too big or something then? You could try to resize it a bit...

Oh, you're right, it's too big. Why wouldn't they give an error message?

Chat is like that ;)

2:34 PM

Oof, yeah... that horse has seen stuff! :D

Yep ^^

I think we had a puffalump too when I was younger... I remember the fabric being very smooth?

I would say yes, but I'm a bit biased :D

;) I can't find it though... I remember ours actually being pretty brightly coloured, while most of the stuff I find through Google is either more muted or a rhino... ours definitely wasn't a rhino :P
Can find yours having never seen it... can't find the one from my childhood XD

2:39 PM
That's a bit ironic indeed x)

I'll ask mom, she might've actually kept it :P

In my family, not keeping a plush is considered a crime :p

Hahaha Well we did donate a lot of ours, but I know mom kept a few important ones. I'm also fearing she kept my Donald Duck, and not the puffalump.

I hope she kept both of them then

2:45 PM
That was impressive google skillz :D

@JourneymanGeek Impressive? You are clearly underselling it!

@Ælis I was british once. Understatement is in the water :D

Ahah :p
I knew @Tink had magical power when it came to finding SE questions/answers, but I had no idea she could use the same magic with google!

@JourneymanGeek Honestly it was just major luck, there's a whole bunch of pink horses with blue stars on the Google images page, but this one looked like he might have the age to actually be someone's old plush ;)
I should really go fold that laundry now :)

@Tinkeringbell the Masters make it look effortless then claim it is luck.

2:51 PM
@Tinkeringbell Have a happy folding then!

3:09 PM
Well, I posted my answer. I hope it's not too off-topic and that I didn't forget too much stuff.

3:53 PM
@Ælis It looks good enough to me ;)

@Tinkeringbell That's good news then, thanks :)

2 hours later…
6:14 PM
That one was smelly.

2 hours later…
8:04 PM
Part of my brain is probably 4 years-old again because I cannot not do this joke:
@Tinkeringbell No U
:p

Oh, I am smelly :P
Haven't showered yet today XD

Well, that makes two of us :p

I guess it's weekend... I might just skip showering until tomorrow...

I think I spend a total of one hour being dressed before going back into my pajama (my pajama is soooo comfy!)

Mine is too! (It's a stackexchange t-shirt :P)

8:10 PM
Oh, that's nice! Mine is much more warmer than a t-shirt, though. I'm currently wearing a warm pajama under a warm vest under a warm blanket x)

That sounds lovely too!
I'm mostly sleeping in t-shirts because I have thick blankets... and somehow if I get too hot, I wake up all itchy. So t-shirts help. I do have a few very warm pj's for when it's really, really, really cold, like freezing more than 5 degrees at night ;)

T-shirt, sweatpants, and a down blanket. Cold for five minutes and then toasty.

@Tinkeringbell I do hope the freezing is happening outside your room. Otherwise, ouch!

Sweatpants and a sweater here... And cozy socks :)
@Ælis I sleep with my window wide open.
Like always, but if it freezes really hard I might just open it only halfway

Ah... mouth drop

8:15 PM
Yeah :P
I just don't like the air when I wake up otherwise... very smelly...

I was going to make a comment about how I never understood people who sleep with their socks! But maybe you really need it x)

Hahaha nope, no socks. Unless again, it's very freezing.

user15026
I only wear socks when I have to (aka when I leave the house)

My brother sleeps with his socks... but he gets really sweaty feet and doesn't like it when he touches his own sweaty feet in his sleep, apparently.
@Ash Do you have carpet in the house?
I can't imagine living without socks otherwise...

user15026
Nope, we have laminate floors

user15026
8:17 PM
I hate socks, they make my feet unhappy

@Tinkeringbell I'm surprised that you notice it. I usually need to get out of the room and in again to realize that the room is smelly
@Ash Definitively agreed on that!
My father calls me "The Hobbit" sometimes because I would always walk around barefoot everywhere

I have stone floors. Something on your feet is a must.

I'm almost always wearing socks. Unless it's really hot, but even then I always wear slippers... We have laminate floors too, but somehow even on hot days barefeet is just annoying, it's like I feel every little bit of dirt sticking to my feet :/

@Ælis You have an excuse for second breakfast then!

@Mithical Ahah, yeah x)

8:19 PM
and yeah... cold floors too. That may change, the new apartment has floor heating :D
@Ash even Happy Socks? :P

user15026
@Mithical yeah, that might convince me to wear socks

user15026
@Tinkeringbell giggles

user15026
I tend to put up with them when it's cold but at home I keep it warm so I don't have to

@Mithical I understand, but my technique in those case is usually to not touch the floor (by not walking around) and to put my feet under a blanket

user15026
Like in the summer when I can wear thong sandals? Socks don't see me for daaaaaays

8:21 PM
@Tinkeringbell I hope you will be happy about it. Most people I know who have that really aren't because it cost them way too much :/
@Ash Why even wear shoes? When I'm on summer vacation (outside of the city), thong sandals don't see me for days! :p

user15026
@Ælis Because work and stores require me to :P

@Ash Yeah, some stores are annoying with that. Thankfully, not all of them \o/

I mean there is also something to be said about shoes. I generally prefer wearing shoes over going barefoot, which I'm getting the impression is rather unusual :P
@Ash No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service?

@Ælis Hmm. It's supposed to be energy efficient....

Well... I really hope it will be then ^^'

8:27 PM
@Ash I'm usually lucky if I get to wear sandals for a few weeks during summer vacation... Sometimes its too cold, most often I wear socks and my hiking boots ;)

user15026
@Mithical I don't like going fully barefoot outside. I like having something a bit covering the soles of my feet

@Mithical It might depend on the culture. In my country, going fully barefoot is seen as weird. But I like it nonetheless :D
