GaMen

5:56 AM
Morning everyone

6:07 AM
@scohe001 raises hand
@Tinkeringbell fingers crossed!

A J
Morning!

Morning @AJ :)

A J
What's up?

So, so tired ... Days are longer and since I don't have curtains I wake up very, very early :p
Plus I have a cold... that certainly doesn't help.
But I'm happy! And what about you?

A J
Good.

6:16 AM
@Rainbacon hehe, I could say the same

A J
Just making an existing project multilingual

@AJ cool :)
@AJ ooh! I always wondered how do people handle translations in projects.

JAD
@avazula :o why don't you have curtains? Sounds like you need them. Or a sleeping mask

@JAD My house is from 1870, I don't have shutters. Also, I don't have curtains in all rooms and those who have some, aren't really dark. Light still comes through :p
I wish I could throw an IPS party at my place. Too bad we're all so far away from each other

A J
@avazula It's a little tiresome. You have to create files containing translations and include according to the selected language. It's just key-value dictionary.

6:22 AM
ooh. And then you test the region in all routes so that the page displays with the correct language?

JAD
hmm, all text on our website comes from a huge dictionary with text. This is done so business owners can adjust text on the website without requiring code changes. Making a translation would just mean duplicating the dictionary

A J
@avazula yes.
@JAD yep.

ooh
so people don't actually edit text in the site's code, right?
That sounded weird to me anyway :)

JAD
@avazula it's a bother when you find a typo and have to wait for the next release cycle.

A J
@avazula no. this way you can add as many languages as you want.
currently, I have two, English and Spanish.

JAD
6:32 AM
@AJ that actually wasn't really a concern for us, since we're just working within our own country.

Hey people, sorry to change the subject but do we have a broad idea on how many people will be voting on the IPS election? Like, on the Workplace, have many people did vote compare to the number of people who could have vote?

A J
@JAD Ohh. We are currently dealing with a Spanish client and they want it in both languages.

JAD
@Ælis trying to work out your odds? :P
@AJ ah yes.

@JAD Maybe :p

JAD
Our business is the website, so we don't have clients like that :P
@Ælis I'd say at least 5

A J
6:36 AM
@Ælis Not really. You can't say how many people will vote. There were more than 3k eligible voters but only 401 voted on Movies & TV
@JAD We have this company product which we modify a little as per client's requirements.

@AJ Do you know how many eligible voter there is for IPS?
@JAD I really hope that we will have more then 5 people voting, that would be really dissapointing ^^ Even 20 wouldn't be much

A J
@Ælis 1.7k

@avazula Only 11 hours or something to go! Morning everyone :)

@Tinkeringbell 11 hours until I go home? :p

@avazula I already am home!
I have to work quickly now, so I can get my work done. I still need to assemble three crochet parrots today too, so I can take them to our teambuilding activity tomorrow and give them to the team ;)

6:47 AM
@AJ Thanks :) That mean that we can hope for at least 100 people voting. That's nice :)

@Ælis It's on the election page too, that information:

JAD
@AJ ah gotcha
@Ælis that's why I said at least :P

@Tinkeringbell Oh, that's nice! And since 183 people visited, we might get more than 150 people voting!

JAD
@Ælis hmm, not everyone that visit votes or should vote
if you are eligible, you get a notification asking you to vote
but it's not nice voting on a site you're not that active

@JAD You should have said more than 0, you would have sure to be right :p

JAD
6:50 AM
@Ælis Eh, I think 5 is a safe bet

@JAD True that

@Ælis I'm not so sure... '0 visited the site during election' < That's weird though, I HAVE visited the site as well so that should be at least one. But if people only click the notification that says 'election happening', doesn't mean they'll vote..

JAD
@Tinkeringbell just click for the badge :P

@Tinkeringbell Stop destroying my hopes! :p

@JAD Well, then we might get a lot of voters too! There's a badge for voting :)

JAD
6:56 AM
@Tinkeringbell hmm maybe :P
I don't vote if I'm not active on the stack, if I don't know what matters in terms of moderation

I'm pretty sure there's less scrupulous people out there! :)

@Tinkeringbell is this for a gift?
oh, they are, I misread. Cool :D

JAD
@Tinkeringbell which I guess adds to the candidate score bias

A J
@Tinkeringbell It's only accessible to mods til the election ends.

@avazula Yep. Our team is called ARA (Dutch for macaw) :P Since one coworker found out I crochet, he's been asking me for a small parrot he can use as a rubber duck... and I decided on a whim last week to make one for the entire team, to distribute tomorrow. It's a fun pattern to make and I had loads of fun picking colours and stashbusting!

JAD
7:01 AM
@AJ WE'RE GOT A LEAK!

@AJ Oh. Well, it didn't scream at me that I couldn't share it :P

JAD
I just wanted to use that gif :P

@Tinkeringbell :D sounds like fun :)

@Tinkeringbell What I do for that is if I am not familiar with the candidates, I just place my votes, and reject them as soon I got the badge ;D

A J
@JAD could've used it at work. :P

7:04 AM
@avazula I just hope everyone can now find one with colours they like XD Maybe I should've just made 8 the same :P

I'm working on a beehive blanket. It's slow to make ... but I hope it'll be beautiful in the ned

JAD
@Tinkeringbell so your profile pic is also based on the team name?

@JAD Not really, I had a parrot before landing in that team :)

JAD
@AJ well, I am at work, so technically...

But I like my profile picture even better now :)

JAD
7:05 AM
I'm also working from home on a remote desktop, so the gif runs at like 1fps
@Tinkeringbell heh, nice coincidence

@avazula get some sun and warmth

@Mithrandir we don't really have such a thing in France rn ... it's like 10°C outside

:(
33C here today

JAD
7:22 AM
We've been having occasional thunderstorms for the past week. It's pretty nice

A J
@Mithrandir 46.8C here. ;P

@AJ they say on the news that people stab each other for water over there... is this true? :(
sounds to me like when foreign news were calling yellow jacket movement "civil war"

Sid
@AJ Only a slightly colder 44C here.

JAD
@avazula I haven't really heard about them in a few months, are they still active?

7:41 AM
@JAD TBH I don't know myself. They were still active before the European elections but I haven't heard from them since. Did you @Ælis?

A J
@avazula in a few areas, yes.

@avazula , @JAD Well, some stations of subway are still close every Saturday, so I guess there are still active (and it seems that there has been some dead recently but it wasn't in Paris)
.
I don't have time for this right now, but if someone want to answer to that:

Cory HunterMy apologies if this is off-topic here, but I can't figure out any better place. @avazula Oh dear, I just realize I have to cross Paris next Saturday to come to see you and some station between my place and the train station might be closed ><

@Ælis That doesn't need an answer at all... :P Just vote if you want to, and let it be ;)

@Ælis done
@Ælis oh no :(
@Tinkeringbell well I invited them to write a meta question if they want to discuss it. If it's just plain ranting, they'd likely drop it

7:57 AM
@Tinkeringbell Well, this is basically a rant but some point could still be addressed. Anyway, @ava answered it nicely already :)

JAD
@Ælis It's important to not just dismiss it, but I don't think it's anything new really.

@avazula We can only hope :P Or they write a meta that's just as bad...

@Tinkeringbell Aren't mod supposed to have infinite patience? :p

@Ælis Yep! And it's much easier to remain patient if you don't start a comment thread :P
(badmodadvice disclaimer)

@Tinkeringbell Oh, I see. So the secret to not waste energy moderating/arguing is to not moderate/argue at all, that's clever :p

8:07 AM
Yep!

JAD
It becomes even easier if you don't log in

A J
8:17 AM
@avazula It usually happens when it comes to farming. Farmers of one village will not let farmers of other village use their water else there will not be sufficient water for both.

@AJ :(

8:44 AM
The devs made a modification (asked by the PO) but now my tests are all broken :'(

@Ælis If it was just one modification, wouldn't that mean you only need to make 1 modification to your tests too to get them working again? And isn't that the devs job, to make sure the tests run before they drop it over the fence to you?

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I "only" need to do one modification but that is a big one who will require devs to add stuff to their code (so that I can test properly instead of doing something ugly). And no, devs don't run my tests before "dropping it over the fence" (I'm hoping this will change in the foreseeable future, but I have been waiting for that for 4 months already, so...)

o/

Sounds like you'll be waiting a lot more :( Sorry to hear that.

8:52 AM
Heya!

@Imus Hello, nice answer you just posted :)

thanks :)
I took a look at the other linked question (talking to community) which has an euhm special answer?

@Imus I didn't read the other answer yet, I felt like it would give me some mod work I hadn't time to do right now ^^

It does give some mod work :p
it looks to me like a "try this" answer without back up
and I'm not in the mood for mod stuff either
I probably should click the flag thingy though ...

@Imus Maybe just flags it then, someone else might then see it in the review queue and left a comment

8:57 AM
is that "not an answer" or "in need of mod intervention"?

NaA

I want an option "Needs a nice guy to explain the rules and help improve this answer"
I mean, the answer might actually work ... but needs backup and I'm not in the mood to help with/explain that :p

9:12 AM
@Imus What about dropping in here the link so others can give it a shot?

A: Multiplayer game - nice fake account of toxic player, community

AstariulFirst of all, as an authority figure (moderator), you don't want to take any side. Even if you are 100% sure, don't officially say that Mr. Newbie is Mr. Toxic. Then you have 2 side to take care of : Mr. Newbie / Mr. Toxic Send a private message to Mr. Newbie, warning him. Let him know that ...

@Imus We already have that, more or less in chat ^^ We usually write it like that:

how do you put the button?

with: [tag: comment-pls] (and without the space)

[tag:tag] turns into

9:19 AM
| just trying out button thing. Ignore this | link
yush, learned something new today

I commented on that one. I am confused tho as there is only 1 answer, how you could been speaking about this being "the other answer"

@dhein The OP of the question posted another question specifically about talking with the player (and not the community)

ah kk
Shouldn't this actually be kinda a duplicate? I mean for 1 can't this actually be put together in one post? As I was quite annoyed reading the very same text twice just to see its simply a copy pasted variant of the other OP...

it used to be 1 post

@dhein I dropped a comment on the second one. I feel that it needs tailoring to be more suited to be a question about the community (instead of the player ;) )

9:27 AM
OP split it up because people commented it would be too hard answering both at once

Hmmm not sure if this is any better this way :x

And I kinda agree... It's a whole different thing to deal with the community than with the player themselves... but they should be two questions with different sides of the story ;)

yep

yush, just needs some editting to make it actually different questions
or at least at the top "Same as LINK QUESTION but how to handle community instead of player"

9:52 AM
When you google stuff about cucumber the IT tools and only fond stuff about cucumber the vegetable...

there's no cucumber IT stuff
you've been lied to
hint: google with "cucumber tool"

Yeah, don't worry I have found a work around ^^

10:46 AM
@Ælis I commented. I'm much more prone to starting verbal fights than Tink is. I don't crochet.
Also WTH, the comments I've seen from curators here are formidable
Maybe you'll burn out after receiving too much crap, but they're usually much nicer than comments on other SEs. Especially @Rain's
He definitely does yoga.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Not so sure that was wise of you ^^ Also, crochet needles can be a deadly weapon :p

They're usually much nicer than comments anywhere on the internet

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ That's nice to hear, thank you :D

@Ælis I believe I'm much cooler headed now about these kind of debates. I remember I was way more snarky and cynical
Which is actually not always bad. Sometimes the opposing side is unbearably holier-than-thou and self-righteous.
Already made a martyr of themselves, and are now rising against systematic corruption.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I honestly still find your comment to be a bit too passive-agressive ^^

10:55 AM
It's more like a "come at me bruh". It IS probably a bit too combative for Eeps, but eh, let's see how it plays out.
P.S. I'm more of an outsider, so it can't look like a "knee-jerk from a loyal member of the clique"
In other news, I just probably started contributing to M&TV

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Well, you definitively sound like one :p

First answer actually being about kidney transplant, heh

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ in M&TV, really? Oo

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I'm currently reading it, I had to see that by myself :p

10:59 AM
Go ahead, it's not my worst answer

It seems like a fairly long answer. I will probably finish it after lunch so, see you later :)

Imagining a French lunch, with baguettes and coffee
@Pseudohuman Ow shut up, you're useless most of the time. You can't even make a dad joke.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ The server was not able to process your request.

11:02 AM
@Pseudohuman That's my point

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Failed to parse response

@Pseudohuman Now you're just being a smartass.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ The server was not able to process your request.

A J
11:17 AM
finally, it's raining!

it was raining this morning ... which I no longer enjoy now that I commute to work by bike
roughly 15km trip in the rain isn't really that enjoyable :p
especially if you miss a turn and end up riding 16~17km instead XD

A J
@Imus I do that by a cab. :P Quite enjoyable. ;)
window seat, earphones in.
great feeling

I'm not earning enough to commute to work by cab :o
at least I get paid for cycling to work :D

A J
@Imus Actually, that's a sharing cab. I won't be able to afford it too.

@AJ Not exactly how I would describe a bus, but OK ...

11:44 AM
@Imus Cabs in some places pick up people, just like buses.

A J
@Imus There are buses available too, but I use cab for fast services

11:56 AM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I know, the joke was that A J would secretly take a bus, but describe it as a cab instead

Ooof, that's subtle.
Even for me

note to self: sarcasm doesn't work (as well) in chat

It works if you're me

1 hour later…
1:07 PM
good afternoon dear @Rain

Hi @avazula!

I'd like to say long time no see but I can see you through my window ba dum tss

That's interesting, are there autistic folks outside your window often?

@Rainbacon not really, but when there's an SE election they're all over the place lol
How are you doing?

@avazula Oh, me too! :p

1:11 PM
I'm ok, I've had a scratchy throat the last couple of days that is hopefully on its way out the door. How are you?

@Rainbacon oh no! :/ I have a cold too but it's stuck in my nose rn

10 most important tips for cold people definitely ignore that'll blow your mind
Get good sleep.

my fiancee has it much worse. For the last 5 days or so she's been coughing as if she has a 2 pack a day cigarette habit

Keep it warm, but not hot
Some physical activity helps. If you dry the sweat, that is

Interesting. What are the repercussions of not drying the sweat? @M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ

1:25 PM
@Crosscounter In-doors would probably be okay if it's warm enough. You'd undo any good that it does if you feel cold while it's drying though

Are any of you good with SEDE?
If I remember correctly, I think @scohe001 is, but they aren't here right now

Rene is but I dunno if he's around

Ah got ya. Too bad cooling is what sweats are for

Is there a chat room for sede?

I heard a lot of your body heat escapes through the top of your head

1:27 PM
@Crosscounter Sure, and that part is okay. If the water is gonna absorb heat to evaporate, though
@Rainbacon If you have a question, you can ask it on meta.SE

@Rainbacon I writed some query but I wouldn't say I'm "good". What do you need?

Mostly I need help with the schema
My sql is fine, but I'm having trouble figuring out the tables that I need
I want to write a query that will pull the number of posts closed for a specific close reason

I think it had them listed in a help page or something

1:30 PM
But I can't seem to figure out how to get the close reason for a closed post

@Rainbacon There is a table named: "CloseReasonTypes". You might want to do a select * on it in order to see all the closed reason before writing your query further

I've done that, and I see what's in that table, my issue is that I can't seem to find any tables that have foreign keys into it other than the pending flags table

SQL is Greek to me

Ooh, that does help, I think

1:35 PM
Yay
I think

Ok, yeah. That query is what I was looking for, but also, that's a super unintuitive thing. There is a string field on post history called "comment". If the history event is a closure, then that field gets the id of the close reason type

Yep, definitively not intuitive (even thought it does make some kind of sense)

@Rainbacon did you end up figuring out your SEDE issue? Or did you still need help??

@scohe001 They'll always be happy to talk with you so I'm sure they'll say yes
Everyone's always happy when you're here

Yeah, I got it

1:44 PM
@avazula awww stop it, you!<3

See my previous comment and tell me, did you know that?

@Rainbacon lol every time I have to use SEDE I always have to relearn our table structures. I would've probably gone through and SELECT * FROM on every table I thought might be useful until I found what I was looking for
That particular relationship does sound tricky though...I wonder why we didn't name that column better

I think because it's used for different things depending on the type of post history
For example, if the history record is an edit, that column contains the edit message

Ahh that makes some semblance of sense. Still confusing

That's the kind of thing that ends up happening when you try to force polymorphism onto a relational database

1:47 PM
I believe there was an MSO post with all the relationships somewhere though (for next time)

A NOSQL database would make such a thing less complex, but it introduces other quirks

Q: Database schema documentation for the public data dump and SEDE

Stu ThompsonStack Exchange releases "data dumps" of all its publicly available content roughly every three months via archive.org, and also makes that information queryable over the Internet at the Stack Exchange Data Explorer (SEDE). Over time, as new features and other bits of data are introduced to Stack ...

Is "beggar" rude in English? Should I use pangandler instead?

"Comment: This field will contain the comment made by the user who edited a post.

If PostHistoryTypeId = 10, this field contains the CloseReasonId of the close reason (listed in CloseReasonTypes):"

Ooh, that's super useful

1:49 PM
Yup, there it is. I guess I'll have to consult that page first lol

@Ælis I don't think beggar is necessarily rude, but it certainly might have some negative connotations
Though panhandler might as well

@scohe001 This post have more stars than upvote x)

Yeah, I'd see both beggar and panhandler as having negative connotations.

I'm not sure if there's a better word though

^ Agreed. What's the context?

1:51 PM
Alright, thank you both for the help/opinion :)
@El'endiaStarman I'm writing an IPS question related to a presumably homeless person going around asking for money/food

@Ælis throw it in the Sandbox first and we can critique ;)
I need MVCE :p

@scohe001 MVCE?

@Ælis I doubt there's a word for someone who's begging for monney that doesn't have a negative connotation ...

@Imus Yep, but some connotation are worst than others ^^

1:54 PM
quick note: I have never heard of panhandler before

@scohe001 I might, I have been thinking about this question for months but was never able to write it in a satisfying way

@Ælis throw it up! I'll help you tear it apart :p
Also while searching for that SEDE link, I got lost in this one. Lot of cool stuff here:

BalusCLet's collect some interesting queries for the Stack Exchange Data Explorer here. How many upvotes do I have for each tag? (how long before tag badges?) SELECT TOP 20 TagName, COUNT(*) AS UpVotes FROM Tags INNER JOIN PostTags ON PostTags.TagId = Tags.id INNER JOIN Posts ON Pos...

2:10 PM
Interesting, IPS is somewhat happy
Yeah, that's a dangerous meta. Super easy to get lost in it

Welp. Never thought I'd see a smiley face as the result of a SQL query (being graphed).
Lol, Christianity.SE definitely ain't happy. :P
And CodeGolf.SE sure is. :)

2:36 PM
All done ;)

The Eight Parrots of Judgement

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, individually they are cute. Together, they look like they are plotting to overthrow the world

@Rainbacon They're definitely plotting something...
@El'endiaStarman Messengers of the apocalypse :P

2:53 PM
May the apocalypse be an adorable one!

why does the [chat] markdown in a comment not link directly here?
Instead it goes to a list of chatrooms for the site

@TheTinyMan Sounds good!

3:09 PM
@scohe001 Posted (but you probably already know that since you are the one who created the sandbox ^^)

Lol yup, just got the ping :p

@Rainbacon Yeah, that's what it's supposed to do... I think it's a bit difficult to make it link to the main room for each site, so it goes to the list of rooms instead.

It's annoying, I had to edit some things out of my comment so I could drop a full link to the room

chat.stackexchange.com/rooms?tab=site&sort=active is a kind of link that doesn't differ for each site ;)
@Rainbacon Your comment still looks very fine to me :)

Is "man asking for change" a polite way to say beggar? Because a "man asking for change" is definitively not a beggar in France. Just a man, asking for change (like: "I have this 10 dollar bill, do you have 5 dollar bills that we could exchange?")

3:17 PM
Maybe spare change?

@Tinkeringbell I went the closet back, I don't know what comment you are talking about :(

@Ælis The one on that meta answer you linked this morning ;)

I'm a little surprised that we only have 3 mod nominations

@Tinkeringbell And that penguin is certainly the God of Wrath.

@Rainbacon me too

A: Sandbox for Proposed Questions

ÆlisHow to interact with a man asking for change without giving them false hope? I live in a big city with a lot of homeless people. When I'm in the subway, I will often see them going around asking for money, food or "just a smile." I know these people--like anyone--probably don't like being ignor...

I'm not sure who else I would expect to run, but I kind of thought there would be someone else
Looking at the nominations from when EmC was choosen, there's only one nomination from someone who hasn't been in chat and explicitly said they weren't going to run and who hasn't already nominated

@Rainbacon I guess that, if we want plot twist and drama in this election, we need to create it yourself :p
