Q: How to get someone to speak less cryptically (with less idioms)?

hectorpepper(For a bit of a backstory, this question is related to this one here) I have a friend called Bob. He's part of a group of friends I meet with regularly. Bob has a very direct, yet cryptic communication style. I find this is rare because usually people who are poor at communicating are not direct...

Hello!
Oh, I can't ping @Rainbacon because he hasn't been here for too long :'(
Anyway, I have 7,707 rep on MSE and I find this number beautiful!
@EmC Too bad you aren't on the same timezone as me, though
Also, tomorow is a day off! \o/

Have you tried asking them to not use idioms? Maybe point out that saying " holding your feet to the fire" take much more time than just "pushing/pressuring you"? — SZCZERZO KŁY 50 secs ago

That's impressive, but I still like your 117 better

Was hoping to reach 100k on January 1st but that's looking rather unlikely... oh well

@Mithical Fun fact: it's already been 2020 for over 2 hours in part of the world. There's a UTC+14 time zone.

Christmas Island FTW

Kiritimati. I think Christmas Island is near Australia isn't it?

@chump do you have a cat for us?

That one is super cute! Both are actually

@chumpbot Ahah, there you go, have a star :p

12:23 PM
I'm a sucker for cats but kittens in particular

@Belle I believe a lot of people in this room are too :p

One of my colleagues hates cats. I don't understand how! I think they are adorable and cute, even while they are plotting our downfall.

This makes me sad for your coworker. I understand that you could hate moskitos or wasps, but cats???

@AJ I mean it's hardly a coincidence that you posted it as soon as it was possible for you to earn the hat ;)

Does chumpbot have the hat now?

@Belle Not yet, but soon (the hats aren't instently awarded)

@Mithical I already got it.

So, I'm having some issue automating some mobile tests. I found a question from someone with the same issue and the only answer was mostly "you are doomed, you should do that manually instead" ><
(but I'm trying to automate tests, so saying "just keep doing them manually" isn't an option)

1:03 PM
Manually running test every day is also a type of automation, I guess? I hope you can figure it out.

@Belle I probably wasn't clear, but what they were saying was that "automating mobile test is useless". They were saying that, in the case of mobile tests, you should do everything manualy without automating anything (because it's too complicated)

I don't agree with some parts of this answer. First, I find the approach of learning a couple of lines to say rather unusual. Maybe it would be better if you focused on explaining what you want to get across and then include 1-2 examples as you did later. Then, the positivity thing is definately not universal. This might be correct in certain countries or if you are in a business context, but none such thing was given by the OP. This is about two friends, be direct man. If you talk with them like you would at a job interview, that's way worse — Raditz_35 41 secs ago

@Ælis What?! That's nonsense. Automated mobile testing is a blessing. My tests actually caught a lot of little bugs the next day that I would've missed for a week or longer because it's impossible to manually test a decent sized application on multiple devices every day.

@Belle I don't know for mobile testing, but automated web tests are definitively a blessing indeed. And I really don't understand why mobile testing should be any different (but maybe I missunderstand the answer?). In any case, I will definitively keep trying to automatise my tests

What kind of application are you testing? We used Selenium and Google Chrome. Chrome can simulate various devices.

@Belle A custom mobile app developped with ReactNative. I'm (trying) to test it using my phone (android) + appium + selenium (+java). But I don't know anything about mobile testing, and I'm having a hard time figuring things out

Ah, I know very little about android development :\ can't help you there, sorry. I've written automated tests for native iOS apps before with XCTest and 'generic' mobile tests with Selenium and Google Chrome for a webapp.

I miss how easy I find to test web app, now that I have a lot of knowledge about it. I hope I will find testing mobile app as easy very soon. I don't like being stuck and not understanding what I'm doing wrong

@Belle chumpbot has been hatted, thanks for reminding me :D

Let's have a little cat @chump

@chumpbot Nice glasses :p

Also I appreciate all of the happy wishes for next year from y'all, but you're thinking too small here. With that in mind, I want to wish you all the most exciting and fulfilling next decade of your lives on this amazing planet :D
