Q: Making a (second) first impression on mother-in-law. How can I survive this?

PkmmteMy mother-in-law hates my guts and we haven't even met yet. This weekend, my wife and I will be meeting up with her parents for the first time after they kicked her out unexpectedly. This will be the first time I'll ever get to talk to her parents in person, or verbally even. You see, my wife ...

Q: How do I uninvite my friend's boyfriend from Dungeons and Dragons?

AlexA few months back, four of my friends and I started meeting monthly for Dungeons and Dragons sessions. We weren't all close at the start of our campaign, but are now a tight-knit group. One member of our group (let's call her Jill) asked if her boyfriend (Let's say he is Jack) could join at the e...

Why does comment with an "High toxicity" not "published" here (when they aren't also detected as something else)?

@Noon looks like it fits the question

@Noon it does. I just don't think anything has ever been high enough

@Mithrandir Well, this comment interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/18405/… is marked as "High toxicity" in the closed but doesn't seem to have been posted here (unless I missed it)
@JAD Yeah, except the OP is asking for a friend...

Oh, right - the OP is excluded from reports

7:05 AM
@Mithrandir Maybe we should change that when the comment is marked as "High toxicity"?

Probably

@JAD Ahah, yeah XD But I think that, in this case, it really is "for a friend" (which sad, because he would need the answer too)

Hello :)

@Noon sup dawg
tryna write a research statement now :)

@JalapenoNachos Nice, what is it about?

7:33 AM
@Noon broadly speaking, mathematics :)
@ElizB silly question but... did you indent at the beginning of your paragraphs on your statement of purpose?
why does indenting seem strange and old-fashioned to me hmm
I feel the last time I did that was like in high school
@Mithrandir should I indent to start a new paragraph

Q: How can I counter the argument "there is better and there is worse"

I think that this argument is an easy trick to avoid any change and sometimes to just avoid a discussion. Example : A...

@JalapenoNachos I don't know in what language you are writting but I was always told that, if I write in French, I must use indent without line break. But if I write in English, it's the opposite. All this to say: if you don't write in English, you should ask someone who speak the same language as you.

@Noon interesting hmm ...
indenting looks funny, like, too much space almost, "less professional"-looking
hmm I'll look around the internet to see what comes up - thanks :)

@JalapenoNachos I usually use a smaller indent that the default one (which, indeed, seem like "too much space")
@JalapenoNachos No problem :)

oh, interesting - thanks @Noon :)
@Noon btw, not sure whether you meant to spell "writing" the way you did in your profile
you wrote "writting" :)

7:48 AM
@JalapenoNachos Ah, thanks! (know I have to found where I can update my profile)
Found it! Thanks again :)

@Noon no problem :)
btw, where do you go to update your profile? I'm going to update mine too :)

SuimonSo there's this girl I was dating back in may I matched on Tinder. I was over that pretty quickly and I still don't have any romantic interest in her. @Noon The algorithm is here, and not really secret at all. meta.stackexchange.com/a/61343/369802 if you multiply -5 (we're talking your question, right?) with the answers etc... it seems you get a negative hotness, so negative scored questions won't reach HNQ

@Tinkeringbell Thank you :) (and yes, I was talking about my question)

2:30 PM
@Tinkeringbell huh. I could've sworn it was (at least somewhat) based on view count as well

Anyone here? Dropping this one here:interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/18866/1599. Op made some edits but for some reason I can't find out on mobile it isn't showing up in the reopen queue yet. I think they're pretty much good to go though!

@Tinkeringbell the English of the last two paragraphs is pretty tough to decipher
And seeing as that's where the actual question they're asking is, I'm not sure I get what the goal is

@scohe001 Ah, okay :). I think I can give the English an edit once I'm home... Im guessing the goal is something like getting the uncle to stop so they can still accept their help, but that might need another comment

@Tinkeringbell It's ambiguous whether she wants the friend to "stop behaving like this" (blaming OP and being mean) or if she wants the uncle to (creepily coming onto her). And then just not sure what the last paragraph is trying to add

4:18 PM
@scohe001 The OP responded to me in a chat. I edited to make it clearer. I think it's good now

@Noon Nice, thanks!

Hey, I judge silently. You're not supposed to notice ;)

Nah, that's the face of 'just pooped all over that sleeve'

Hi all, Nice to see you all here, I am new comer

@DDD howdy, newcomer

6:50 PM
@DDD Hello! Hope you're enjoying IPS so far?

DDD
I am fine. I am from India. There may be problem for few days to understand your language. But will learn soon
Yes, I am enjoying. Previously I didn't know about all the sites. I only knew stackoverflow. But later I surprised about so many sites. I glad to know about this all sites
:-)

@DDD English is my second language too. :)

DDD
Ok
You all talking here on questions only or on friendly topics also?

@ElizB dang really? I wouldn't have guessed! What's your native language?

DDD
"Marathi"
heard anytime about this language?

6:53 PM
@scohe001 American Sign Language.

@DDD i remember being the same way. I was on SO for years before I realized there was a network at all. I'm glad you found the network if it brought you to us :)

DDD
Ok.
where are you from @scohe001
?

@ElizB Guess I should've guessed that one lol is there a written version though? Or was written English your first written language?
@DDD just moved out here to Texas a few weeks ago! So just a hop and a skip from India ;)

@scohe001 English is my first written language, but what is signed is very different than what is written. ASL has its own grammar nuances

DDD
Ok

6:56 PM
@ElizB interesting. I guess I always assumed it was just taking English words and signing them instead of speaking them, but it'd make sense that that'd take waaaay too long. You guys probably cut stuff like articles and other useless things, yea?

@scohe001 Yup!! if i signed word for word it would take way too long
oooh i know a video lemme go find it

DDD
Actually, In our family and with surrouding people we speak in 'Marathi' or "Hindi" language. But we are mostly writing and learning in English. But communicating in other language. So problem while day to day speaking

DDD
ha ha ha

This is a really cool comparison between Signed Exact English (SEE), Pidgin Sign Language (PSE) and ASL (American Sign Language)

DDD
6:59 PM
:-)

Pidgin sign language is a mix of ASL and SEE
PSE and SEE (obviously) follows each word as it is said in english but ASL is different

DDD
what is timing there?

@scohe001 do take the time to watch each one and see if you can "catch" what the words are. It is basically him describing his house.
@DDD In the video? It's a funny way to show that ASL takes much less time than PSE and SEE

DDD
ohh
I am asking watch timing there?
its 12 am here

user15026
@ElizB oh, yes, ASL gets things done much faster, wow

@Ash i forgot about that video until DDD brought it up
i loved his comparison and the ASL side was waiting for the PSE and SEE to finish haha

user15026
@ElizB I liked that bit

7:14 PM
@Ash haha plus reading a linguistics book

user15026
Yes I thought that was great too

user15026
I've always found ASL to be an interesting language.

@Ash Thanks :)

user15026
I have a few different books that like...list signs and stuff for words, but I always felt like that was such a weird way to learn a language, I know I'm missing like all teh grammar and such that holds it together

user15026
so I could like...cobble together a one word at a time thing, but I'd probably sound really silly to someone who knew the language. And I have no idea how like...verbs and such work, so I'd likely sound very stilted and strange!

7:18 PM
@Ash missing the people, yo.

user15026
@ElizB yes!

@Ash Practice with people is the absolute NUMBER ONE thing that really makes it doable

user15026
It just feels so weird that these dictionaries are always pushed as "teach yourself to sign" and I am like "this doesn't feel like I am going to learn anything useful"

user15026
@ElizB Yeah, like any other language. Like when I've worked on learning Russian in the past, having people who spoke it to speak with helped.

For example @El'endiaStarman learned in high school, but didn't actually really use it until he went to a camp for deaf and hard of hearing folks in computer science
He really picked it up and his knowledge took off from there
@Ash yeah, absolutely
Check out the channel that the video came from: youtube.com/user/chsasl/featured
this guy has a facebook group called ASL That! and he posts the videos there, plus it's a discussion hub

user15026
7:22 PM
Oooh, it looks like he has a number of good videos

Check out the ASL stories. Those are seriously so cool. They use the letters of the fingerspelled alphabet from A to Z or Z to A, or 1- whatever number, usually 10 or 20
they use those hand shapes to create a story.

user15026
Oh, I was going to ask you if that's what that was!

user15026
(also if at any point my questions/interest is too much/annoying etc, let me know)

@Ash Nah your questions are great!! if i tell you the same thing more than three times thats when I start getting annoyed

user15026
7:27 PM
That's reasonable, I think

Super hilarious guy. This is a CODA- Child of deaf adult that is a comedian

user15026
I can't watch it now, but I am definitely going to check all these videos out when I get home tonight and I will report back :)

This particular guy isnt afraid to make somewhat crude jokes :P I'm not a gigantic fan of him. Yeah, he's funny but i think he lays it on the "hot girl" or sexual jokes a bit much
yeah! the ASL that! page also has great learning ASL tips

@Ash That might help with some of the ASL you are trying to practice

@Ash ok, thanks :) I'll do that then ...

@JalapenoNachos I agree on using quotes in that particular instance. (That you said it's for a research statement now has me intrigued.)

user15026
7:38 PM
@ElizB Excellent! I am just like...a bare beginner, but I figure the more help I have to learn, the more I can feel like I am doing it correctly (or closer to correct) so I don't have to unlearn bad habits later :)

@Ash That's a really great mindset.

@El'endiaStarman ok, thanks :)

@IPSCommentBot tp

Condescending much? Oi.

@El'endiaStarman it's really exciting stuffs :)
but still early on, though

7:51 PM
@ElizB I'm horribly lost. But I love the facial expressions!

@scohe001 I love the facial expressions the most. That really shows the inflection and tone of what we're saying in ASL

Is that typically how expressive your face is when you sign?

@scohe001 usually, yeah. signing or no signing, I still am expressive either way, it's so ingrained in my habits now

Haha that's awesome though! I'm sure it makes it easier for @El'endiaStarman to tell when he needs to be quiet and sit on his hands :P

@scohe001 hehehe sometimes
one glare from me usually does the trick.

7:57 PM
I can see why people unfamiliar with it may mistake it for an act though
I think I remember you saying that you went to a concert and people mistook your interpreter for a performer :/

My mom calls it the "mom" look, because I can put my younger siblings in place with that if they know what theyre doing wrong

@ElizB haha you've trained him well!

@scohe001 I like to think so. :P
I wonder when he'll come on here and find this :P

bahahahaha oh gosh. hahaha

8:00 PM
Hahaha smart man :)

would you peeps know if a roommate can hog up much of the wi-fi bandwith? if so, how could they do that? by having a faster computer? haha
seems whenever they're home, my wi-fi connection slows down considerably :(

@IPSCommentBot dagnabit. Caught myself red-handed again

(my macbook is pretty old, >5 years I think)

@JalapenoNachos could be torrenting. Or streaming a bunch of HD videos all at once. Or downloading something huge. Or any combination of the three

ah, ok :(
thanks @scohe001 :)

8:05 PM
@JalapenoNachos Could also be that one of your neighbors has your WiFi, does some of these things and just happens to get home around the same time every day :P
You should be able to see usage by IP on the router settings page though I believe...

Where is your router located? is it in a different room?

@scohe001 Oo interesting
@ElizB yeap, near the kitchen

That happened when mine and hubby's wifi was in another room, then when we moved it was dramatically better

I'm furthest from the router

i mean when we moved it next to the computers it improved dramatically./
Try getting the ethernet cable and move the router

8:08 PM
@ElizB Oo interesting - do you mean being physically closer to the router would help, even without connecting an ethernet cable?

@JalapenoNachos Either connecting your computer directly with the ethernet cable or moving it physically closer to your computer will help

Yeah, if there's a lot of stuff in the way (like two walls and heating/cooling equipment in a utility closet), then the signal gets weaker and it takes more time to get all the requested packets across in good shape.

^

wow, I didn't know that could happen haha

It's like listening to someone shouting from across a big room. You need them to repeat some stuff you missed or didn't hear correctly.

8:10 PM
ah, ok
cool, good to know - thanks so much @El'endiaStarman and @ElizB for the tips! :)

No problem! :)

@JalapenoNachos we did that to our router, so we know now! glad to help!

ooh, i like Thomas Bergersen. I'll listen...

8:43 PM
@Mithrandir That was a pretty nice song.

user15026
8:57 PM
@ElizB If you can't move closer and ethernet isn't possible either, a powerline adapter set might help, because then you can put one end near the router and the other wherever you are, and use that connection

I will also say good things about the AirPort Express - basically serves as an external wifi adapter for my PC
can be connected to a PC via ethernet and just the APE put closer to the access point as opposed to having to move the PC

user15026
@ArtOfCode That's smart - I was doing that with a WRT-54G for a while til it finally died, so I finally got an actual wifi card in my desktop and it has this lovely little antenna tree cabled to it that I can move about

cool, i agree. The one with PH is so inclusive of so many people from all over
musicality has a great diverse group as well

I think I liked the PH one for the fact that...they weren't all professionals, they weren't all trained but you could feel how much they put themselves in it

user15026
I liked the diversity of musicality and how they let like so many people have shining star moments

yeah definitely. there was one person signing but it was not really sign language

user15026
10:26 PM
@ElizB I was going to ask you if it was, I wasn't sure, it didn't look right but since I am such a beginner, I wasn't sure

@Ash it's more of an understandable gesture
"and we will come back home, home again"... I could videotape myself signing that line if you want to see it in real ASL?
I could dig up something if someone else did a video of them signing that song

I agree with @BKlassen, this is a great answer actually. +1 — bob 21 secs ago

Fair enough :)

10:30 PM
@Ash yeah, that's what sign is. I imagine it as painting a picture. Her sign was basically a stick drawing in comparison
hate to be judgmental but we like being represented well

first of all that is the proper sound quality, sign quality, and proper clothing!!
that was so good oh my gosh
there's only so few of these REALLY good quality videos out there.

user15026
@ElizB Proper clothing? Like....not distracting?

10:36 PM
@Ash Exactly! If she was black, wear white. She's white, she wears black.
you can see her hands easily

ah, yeah, contrast, that makes sense

you're not distracted by anything else except for her hands moving

user15026
Yeah, that's really hard to tell what's going on.

10:39 PM
yeah, you can see how rare it is to have such a great video like that

user15026
Definitely.

Also, this is a great article about GUns and Ships being pretty fast (and Hamilton being a speedy sung thing in general): fivethirtyeight.com/features/…

Amber Galloway Gallego is one of the "louder" interpreters out there but she is really good at doing music interpreters
@Ash Cool article!
woah. watching the guns and ships... thats awesome.

user15026
@ElizB "louder"?

user15026
@ElizB Also, that is one of my favourite Moana songs! :D

10:50 PM
pink hair, not afraid to do explicit music

user15026
@ElizB I can't sing that fast, I can't imagine signing that fast either, her hands just gogogogogogo

she's translating the song meaning not signing word for word...
that's what makes it easier
but still it's a lot of work to keep it up and practice

user15026
@ElizB yeah, I figured it wasn't word for word because as you've been teaching me, ASL isn't direct but still that's a lto of meaning to squish into not a lot of time

@Ash yeah absolutely. listening/watching "my shot"
I wanna see hamilton!!! dang

user15026
Me too. It is apparently coming to Toronto next theatre season, I am going to try so hard to get tickets.

11:04 PM
@Ash you can get alerts for when they come out: toronto-theatre.com/theaters/coming-soon/hamilton.php

user15026
@ArtOfCode yep. Depending on what Mirvish has for the rest of the season, I might subscribe again.

user15026
(I didn't this season because I didn't like a lot of the shows, but I have in the past, it was a fun treat for myself)

I just showed hubby, just came home. I am really, really wanting to get tickets. They come in august 2019 to the local theater

user15026
Oh, I hope you're able to, that would be such fun

11:21 PM
yesss i am so looking forward to it. I have tickets to Anastasia soon- October 14th!
Musicals are more and more my thing. I havent seen them all, just the good ones haha

user15026
Oh, that's awesome.

yeah :D

user15026
I love musicals! Part of why I didn't subscribe to the theatre season in Toronto this year is because there were hardly any musicals.

ahh gotcha
This song is on the list as second to "Guns and ships" from Hamilton, and I am amazed....
68 words in 11 seconds in the fastest line.
