Q: How should I handle a case of accidental racism on my part?

ConcernedI was in a quiet place in public talking to some family members when the topic of the Paris Spiderman came up – the recent case of an immigrant rescuing a baby hanging from a balcony in Paris by climbing up the building Spiderman style. One of my family members asked me where the man was from, a...

hi to you too

@TiagoCaldeira Yeah, I did. And @Sid, it may indeed look a little like noodles XD

@Tinkeringbell good afternoon!

i feel sickly, and the application that im writing does not work anymore on the cloud, with no clear reason
already wasted last friday to find the reason

@Cashbee Ugh... That's no fun indeed... Maybe just take a day or two off, on sick leave ;)

@Tinkeringbell ive done that last week >.<
at least i dont feel as bad as then

Interesting thing happened at work, though doesn't sound good.

Q: How to be friends with a man, but not with his wife

A random ladyBackground: I live in Germany and come from an eastern-european country, I am 30. Another guy, let's call him Ben, is from Germany, he is 55, he recently married Alice, she's 40 and also comes from an eastern-european country (and speaks my language). Alice is a friend of my ex, through whom I me...

> Another guy, let's call him Ben, is from Germany,
@Mithrandir ben could be bi
oh yeah but i didnt see username lol

Took me a while to spot the username. Without that I would've assumed male up to the point of romatic interest. If I HAD to guess I would probably go for trans/ambiguous. Following the romantic stereotyping I would guess female.

I'm gonna edit that in, since I am not alone ^^

Then again, does it really matter? :p

yes
I mean, it can very well matter for answers
it doesnt have to

9:39 AM
On that, I agree :)
I'm curious on whether or not people think it could work and especially if someone can speak from experience

i wonder if I also should edit the part where she says why she dislikes alice. it seems kinda rude
@Imus I don't but no exp
@Imus ah well, she just doesn't want to be alon ewith her i think that is achievable

The stay friends with him and not his wife is in itself perfectly achievable. And setting boundries from the start can be as easy as just explicitely say what he can expect of the friendship (on this I speak from experience). But bumping into his wife on their common sport will most likely turn awkward.
Since OP is not interested in her the conversation will either drop dead fast, or move more towards Ben which can cause jealous ideas in his wife (Why is OP always talking about you and meeting up with you but not with me?)
My problem is that I can only guess that last part. No experience means I might completely misjudge it

Q: How to handle double space after period and edits?

AHamiltonI recently rejected an edit where the only improvement was elimination of double spaces after periods. To be clear, on the internet, double spaces are unnecessary. If you look at the preview panel when you add a second space, most browsers just ignore it. I still do it out of habit from time to ...

@Imus I think OP needs to set boundaries for herself.

@Dastardly You okay? :)

@Magisch My answer would have been something like 'Do you want the job? Then you'll have to make it a word format' :P
Hey @sphennings :) How are you doing?

Hey @Tinkeringbell :) I'm overloaded on family gathering to honor how awesome my grandmother was.

@sphennings Oh damn, she didn't make it? :( My condolences...

Philip KendallWelcome to the real world. Sometimes you have to work with other people - while you may prefer to keep your CV in LaTeX or whatever else, that's not how the industry works. Came across to me as too much of a "tell me what to do" question.

I think we can extrapolate some question out of it.
It should be a bit clearer though.

11:51 AM
> My problem with this is that I want to make my point clear without being to aggressive which would make it unlikely for me coming through to him. How can I find a good balance?
seems fine to me
second question is poorly worded but would be ok. ("how can I tackle this problem in a conversation" - how can i tackle should be reworded

Maybe we can call our old friend, the word "tactfully" ;D

this has nothing to do with our old friend :)
@EmC that is one nice answer. have a late UV

I looked up american purity culture and now I need a shower

that's pure BS

@Cashbee aw, thanks ;)

@Cashbee hm?

@Magisch yup. it's pretty awful

straw poll: if I have the opportunity to do a race tomorrow, but I have a sore throat and a broken gear, should I take it or not?

No !

hm... I'm inclined to say no because you should be resting if you are sick
also fix the gear first? :P

12:10 PM
no because physically exerting yourself while already sick is how otherwise healthy people die preventably

It's not that bad, my throat is just a bit sore. I don't know when the next time I'll have a chance to race with the pros is.

I'm not kidding either in my school a 19 year old died from complications following tonsilitis when I was still attending
You have to be the judge of that but I wouldn't

I suspect the sore throat is from an allergy flare up.

I wouldn't race if I was healthy anyway. Sports... Brrr...

@EmC I've been trying for like a month

12:13 PM
@Mithrandir dang :(

I can't bend the teeth back and the shop hasn't ordered a replacement despite me requesting it lots of times

that's frustrating
does it interfere with using the other gears?

If they replace it, you wont buy a new bike (or whatever the gear is fixed to)

Yes.
the bike shop here is a little incompetent

Q: How to deal with discussions about finances with SO without it escalating?

12:21 PM
@Mithrandir I say go for it. a sore throat does not sound too risky, as long as you don't have problems with breathing. The gear, well, I don't know what teeth you are talking about, but if you can drive you can drive. If the broken gear could have implications on your safety while driving, then ofc it's a no go.

the most dangerous part is probably that i'm still learning how to maneuver the cleats

what kind of race is this anyways?
mountain biking?

street biking on mountain bikes

cleats on mountain bikes? haven0t heard of that before 😀
well, if it's dangerous in any way, prepare accordingly or don't do it

A J
@Mithrandir That's a wrong use of mountain bikes! Where should I complain?! :P

12:26 PM
alternative; get the result of tomorrow's race with the finishing times and then try to beat them another day alone. Nvm just realized the'll probably close the streets for that

@SQB I saw the question yesterday, I've asked around ;)
In the meanwhile, it didn't seem 'bad' enough to warrant an unilateral closing

@Rainbacon I wish we had enough sun over here to worry about sunburns ;)
@EmC Oh that's gonna itch so bad!
Hey @TheTinyMan are you just going to lurk or actually chime in? :P

@Tinkeringbell ahh, don't remind me :P

@Tinkeringbell I dunno! xD The sun is evil so I can only presume that this plant is as well. xD

@Tinkeringbell I went to the beach. Didn't put sunscreen on my feet, now walking is an adventure in pain

@Rainbacon I know that feeling ahah, portuguese here

@Rainbacon Nice, beach!

@Tinkeringbell, the optimist :D

@Rainbacon haha me too, I'm shedding as we speak >.<

The beach was fun, walking to the train to go to work this morning wasn't

@Rainbacon :( Any chance you could cycle or something that doesn't hurt as bad?
@EmC I try ;)

1:26 PM
No, it's a bit far away for that
It's ok, the sunburn will go away in a few days

@Rainbacon That's the spirit!

I was outside yesterday for like an hour helping my girlfriend plant a tree, and the heat rendered me miserable. You people who sit out in it are nuts, if it's anywhere near as warm where you are as it is here! ;-)

I once read a Dutch book, it introduced the principle of 'omdenken' (reverse thinking?)... Basically, you don't think 'Ugh, my train is late again' but 'Oh nice, now I have time to go buy a chocolate bar' :P

34ºC in my city right now, it's great but bad: more headaches especially when I'm home

19C over here, and cloudy/windy. I hope we get some sun again soon :)

1:32 PM
The high here is 33C today, currently it's 27

@Tinkeringbell Ohhhh, yeah, that's why I need to move to the Netherlands. xD

@TheTinyMan Hahaha good luck on that, you'll need to find housing first. Apartment hunting is going horrible for me :/

It's been getting to 34C regularly where I am. It's terrible! :-P
@Tinkeringbell Oh, no, I'm sorry to hear that! D: It's okay, I can be a hobo at those temperatures! xD

@TheTinyMan We do get those temps more and more too ;) And rising sea levels because of it :P

@Tinkeringbell Hmm. You're not selling the place as well as you sometimes do. :-P How scary is the direct sea level impact there?

1:37 PM
That's what's left if there's only a 5m sea level rise
I'd basically be living in a town at sea then, or it'll flood too

5m is a lot...but, oh, damn! O . O

@TheTinyMan It does a nice job of getting rid of the "Randstad" though XD
I don't particularly like cities :P
But then again, we'll also lose all the land we so carefully created :( Lelystad is nice.

Haha, is that part of why you can't find housing, because you're not looking in cities? ;-)

@TheTinyMan I'm looking only in particular cities, but most of them are on the east of the country anyway ;) It also wouldn't make sense job-wise to go west
(and I hate wet feet)

Wet feet? :-P If the sea level rises that'll be the least of your problems there! ;-)
Soon, you'll find a place, and then it will be Snuggies all winter long!

1:45 PM
@TheTinyMan Welllll... I do hope it won't rise 5 meters in a single night XD
@TheTinyMan Hahaha yay! Snuggies and some rig so I can use my desktop from the lazy couch instead of having it on a desk :P

SQB
The 1953 North Sea flood was a major flood caused by a heavy storm that occurred on the night of Saturday, 31 January 1953 and morning of Sunday, 1 February 1953. The floods struck the Netherlands, Belgium, England and Scotland. A combination of a high spring tide and a severe European windstorm over the North Sea caused a storm tide; the combination of wind, high tide, and low pressure led to a water level of more than 5.6 metres (18.4 ft) above mean sea level in some locations. The flood and waves overwhelmed sea defences and caused extensive flooding. The Netherlands, a country with 20% of its...

@Tinkeringbell That's way easier than it sounds to some people. xD
@SQB Wow, that is pretty terrifying... hey, @Tinkeringbell, please don't die! :o

@TheTinyMan Don't worry, we now have:
The Delta Works (Dutch: Deltawerken) is a series of construction projects in the southwest of the Netherlands to protect a large area of land around the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta from the sea. The works consist of dams, sluices, locks, dykes, levees, and storm surge barriers located in the provinces of South Holland and Zeeland. The aim of the dams, sluices, and storm surge barriers was to shorten the Dutch coastline, thus reducing the number of dikes that had to be raised. Along with the Zuiderzee Works, the Delta Works have been declared one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American...
They made a big fuss about having closed all the locks for the first time ever last winter, in a storm. Turned out 1 was closed just to see if it still worked, and another because it's paired with one that needed closing... So no need to worry yet :)

Why not just design it for him, but just a little bit off-spec. E.g., open up a text editor, pick a random font (say Comic Sans) and type: "You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you. I am the LORD." -Leviticus 19:28 — dr jimbob 10 secs ago

@Tinkeringbell dutch hydroengineering is pretty darned cool ;)

1:54 PM
This is all really interesting reading. There are some really cool stories on the flood page! :o

@JourneymanGeek Yep :D It's also very cool to watch in action :) If it's storming, people go visit the Woudagemaal (oldest steam powered still working one, that's fired up in 'emergencies') and the closing of the Maeslantkering for example :P We're probably the only people that go play tourist on such days XD

@SQB How many meters is that? Only a tiny Limburg part is still above sea level?

SQB
That's 70m. in steps of 10m.

@TheTinyMan If you ever do visit the Netherlands, you could go to the 'Neeltje Jans'. It's a visitor center for part of the Delta Works, and pretty interesting. Or, if you'd like to see how people lived before we turned the ZuiderZee into the IJsselmeer, go visit the Zuiderzeemuseum at Enkhuizen. Just the drive across the Afsluitdijk is worth it ;)

SQB
1:58 PM
The first image shows a substantial part of The Netherlands flooded. However, that is the current sea level. That's what we'd have without any hydroengineering.

@SQB That's a lot!... Is there even a chance of 70 meters if all the polar ice would melt?
@SQB We'd survive 70, and go on a hydroengineering spending spree to reclaim our country :P

SQB
The problem is, we just don't know. There are two factors that are difficult to model. The first is thermal expansion of sea water. Water expands a little when it gets warmer. Only a little, but there's a lot of water.

@Tinkeringbell In the midwestern region of the US people play tourist with tornados

SQB
The other one is melting of land ice. Sea ice doesn't make much of a difference, but land ice (Greenland, Antarctica) is water trapped in solid form that is not currently part of the sea.

@SQB but I thought ice would have more volume than water

2:02 PM
@Tinkeringbell That sounds like fun to me! :-)

or is it at the lowest volume at 0°C?

SQB
@Cashbee Ice does, but most of the world's oceans are already water.

@SQB on the other hand, water takes up less volume than ice
@Cashbee bah! :P

Maybe this would be a nice question for Worldbuilding :) How rapid of a climate change and how much melting ice do I need to flood the Netherlands XD

SQB
2:04 PM
Only the North Pole has sea ice, and that's just a tiny sliver compared to the total amount of water.

@Tinkeringbell If you don't ask, I might do just that :)

@Mithrandir24601 Hmm... I'm smelling that one might reach HNQ :P I might just do some research tonight. If I haven't posted it by tomorrow, this time, go ahead :P
Of course, we do need to take into account things like how much money and effort can be spent on just improving our hydroengineering

@Tinkeringbell do you want a hard science answer?

So I'd need to find out at least the current rate of that?

2:06 PM
worldbuilding should be named "world wrecking" ;)

@Mithrandir24601 I don't know yet, can I get a soft-science one too? Like 'Just have it rain for 40 days and nights'? :P

We should just build a big bubble and let it submerge! xD

@TheTinyMan Oh cool! We'd be a real life atlantis and we can charge tourists for visiting XD
@JourneymanGeek I've never really done anything over there :P Except look at a Santa question and managing to step on HDE's toes :P
As the author of the Santa question on Worldbuilding, I'd like to say that it wasn't really asked for fun; it was a serious question. I was inspired by the season to work on the basics of a short story; I seriously do need the relevant calculations done. So I wouldn't really be inclined to cite that as an example of a "fun" question. — HDE 226868 ♦ Dec 23 '17 at 0:00

@Tinkeringbell Sounds like a plan to me! Boom, I've solved The Netherlands' problems! ;-)

@Tinkeringbell i post vaguely trolly answers ;p

2:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek Meh, I wasn't raised like that XD

A: What is the least expensive way to annihilate humanity?

Journeyman GeekWait Eventually the sun will explode expand into a red giant, taking out most of the solar system with it. What remnants of humanity that have left the solar system would likely meet the same fate elsewhere, or gradually evolve into something we wouldn't identify as human. Eventually? Perhaps ...

"I wasn't raised like that" is probably why I'd never ask questions on IPS ;p

@JourneymanGeek Hahaha Okay, that one's sharp!
@JourneymanGeek Well, we do expect people to stick to the premise, and answer with something that's culturally relevant (or disclose that it's not)... So, you can go ahead and ask, just comment on everything 'Why do you think this will work in my culture' :P

well, a good troll answer is plausible
just unexpected
@Tinkeringbell more that I sort things out first lol
I'm currently trying to cut my dad out of my matchmaking process since he monumentally messed up contact with someone I'm actually interested in talking to ;p

@JourneymanGeek Is that even possible? :/ I got the impression you were pretty much stuck with him being the middleman?

which would likely be a great IPS question
naw. I want to get my aunt to do it
she's got experience
Its a bit like sometimes you go
"Dad, put down the wrench and let me handle that water pipe, you're too old for this shit"
at the same time, you can't say that
so...
"lemme take a look!"
@Tinkeringbell so far, of most of the folks he's picked out...

2:16 PM
@Tinkeringbell most of what I post there is quite sciencey and gets a few upvotes and a few 'ooh, interesting' comments. Except for the one where I was just like 'TV tropes!' and got over 40 upvotes :P

about half are unlikely to be interested cause they kinda want specific requirements like location...
one or two... erm...

@JourneymanGeek Then go ask! :P No use if you wait until after he's mad at you :P

@Tinkeringbell lol
Naw, I'll just... get things moving

And the current lady, did he pick her out? Or your aunt, or you? (I think you've already said this but I forgot)

oh god
It was an accident

2:18 PM
A happy accident? :D

story of some people's lives :p

My parents know this guy who runs a sort of place which they do religious rituals for hire....

@Mithrandir24601 I at least need to do some research on how worldbuilding is supposed to work ;)

we use them for when dad's in india and needs to do his parent's annual rites
their daughter is mildly cute, and supposedly available
but she's not ready and.... gave us a random ID...
And well
Mom was like "she's cute"
for 3 days... got her ID and "actually... wait.... she speaks 5 languages, and does crafts as a hobby...."
then dad's been trying (inadvertantly?) to sabotage the whole thing lol

Dad doesn't want you to go with the cute multilingual crafter? Or does he want it too much and sabotages without realising himself?

2:21 PM
I think as such, I've had...
@Imus dad's dad.
He's one of those folks used to having other people do everything for him
and was annoyed I asked him if he sent the email, and when he wasn't sure cause he couldn't find it... asked again a week later...
That's fine though
I'd rather light a candle than curse the dark

I don't think I'll ever understand the parents selecting date for you thing. I can see that it can work better than the randomly bump into your "perfect" match and hope you get to talk in our culture. Just saying I don't understand the alternatives XD

To be fair, I also don't fully understand the whole dating thing here... I kinda never went on a date with my soon to be wife ^^, Worked out perfectly anyway

tbh I really need to see if that would work as an IPS question ;)
... how did you meet then?

Went to university together

2:27 PM
So a bit of background...
I'm part of a very small, slightly discriminated against community.

in one computer lesson I was late so no more available computers. Randomly sat down next to her. Started talking. Gave her my mail adress and didn't really stop chatting after that ^^,

We're kinda all over the place - so there's few of our folks around
Its a mix of finding someone of the same caste and language...

That might make it rather hard to randomly bump into a significant other :o
Hope for you your parents find a good match :)

Some folks do marry outside the community - one of my cousins did, and tbh I like her husband more than i like her XD
yup!
Its a mix of random people off websites and... "I know someone who knows someone..."
@Imus I think there's about... 200 families of us in singapore - hence trying to find a future mrs geek in india
and ya, its likely to be someone who's a total stranger
and it can, potentially, go horribly wrong

That's not much different from the current "swipe right" match making here

2:31 PM
worse websites? ;p

At least your parents might know someone who know someone that could be a decent date :)

I personally want to do it through the aunt-ernet, but..
@Imus ... not really

SQB
I think we should employ Buckley to answer our "dear Abby"-questions.

both their initial "we know these folks" suggestions didn't work ;)

@JourneymanGeek Sorry, had to run or miss the bus XD. But I've caught up, good luck on getting your aunt to help :)

one's not ready. The other's family is super odd, and the uncle who's married in there basically warned my mom's off
also, mom seems to keep picking girls with dead dads...

Not ready or not ready yet?

@JourneymanGeek How many did she pick? ;) Maybe that's just a coincidence

@Tinkeringbell 3 so far... well one had a dead mom

@SQB That would be great! ahah

@Imus If she changes her mind and I'm still single, we can talk ;)
but I don't see the point of pushing the matter if she's gonna make up stuff to avoid it
@Tinkeringbell tbh, I hope it is XD
but she... keeps pointing it out

2:40 PM
@JourneymanGeek That would weird me out...

@Tinkeringbell Its wierding me out.
I mean, the first one, she had a soft spot for, cause we've known their family for years...

@JourneymanGeek Hahaha see! Western culture isn't that dissimilar after all XD

@Tinkeringbell hah, singapore's vaguely western.
And I joke we basically became what we hates the most.... the victorians ;)

For more context, maybe it would help if you specified: (a) what country you're in, (b) your age, (c) whether or not you and your brother live together. — Radu Murzea 1 min ago

@JourneymanGeek Hahaha ah well, I do like Victorian era clothing :P

2:44 PM
oh, well, sarees have petticoats ;p

@JourneymanGeek If I had the figure to pull those off, I'd wear them every day :)

@Tinkeringbell heh, sarees?

@JourneymanGeek petticoats ;)

ahh ;p

Although if sarees are comfy, I won't dismiss them outright ;)

I like the idea of that kind of clothing but they usually mean layer upon layer, and I generate too much heat for that. xD Makes LARPing awkward.
Gahhhh, I have a LARP in three weeks and I'm gonna fry.

tries to imagine @TheTinyMan in a saree

@Mithrandir Do you even know what I look like? xD
Or are you just imagining my icon, Tiny from Secret of Evermore, in a saree?

Your avatar.

I agree. However my experience is the person you are talking to will take it that way regardless, unless the OP self degrades themselves. — Elysian Fields 1 min ago
