Q: Is it possible to talk politics while knowing little about politics?

user191799So I want to have conversations with some people at my school who are pretty political - they're in debate club and taking all these social sciences in school so they have a lot to talk about. Me, being a more math and science oriented person, don't really know much about what they're saying some...

3:50 AM
@ExtrovertedMainMan Here on IPS we are all for talking shit... such an important 'skill'

@RichardU I don't know, you seem to have an exceedingly cynical view of police. In all my interactions with them they've been forthcoming and helpful
Even the one time they thought I was drunk (wasn't) they were pleasant about it all and caused no undue hassle

interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/12982/1599 NAA: question is now about boundaries, no longer about what to say
And I'm sad that this got deleted: interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/2741/1599

@Tinkeringbell It's already in the LQP queue

@Magisch I put it there... glad to see people agreeing on that at least

7:59 AM
@Magisch Usually its great for me, although one time I was too drunk to stand, vomited on the pavement, then again in a public bin and they shoved a $400 fine in my pocket... ooh to be young and a moron :D
@Tinkeringbell im surprised OP turned around and was a bit more reasonable, continuing to try and make edits... based of the first lash out I had guessed they were just going to be a total twat but they ended up genuinely trying
idk if its completely fixed now but im impressed that you all managed to push for so many edits

@Jesse Basically, there weren't that many edits IMO, just a lot of comments explaining that asking for the skills to use is a list-type question (just like asking for libraries on SO) and that the way the question was currently set up made it also look like it was asking for a script (like Beofett said on meta). interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/2739/….

Sid
@Jesse why would you want to be around cops when you are drunk?

It only improved after it was closed, and was followed up immediately by a meta complaining that I made them do something they didn't want (Guess what? You're not obliged to edit a closed question, just don't expect it to get reopened)

@Sid Just trying to get home
@Tinkeringbell mmmm, well i guess its a bit mixed, better than nothing but still annoying

@Jesse Yep...
Ah well. At least that question went better than the one with the brothers being estranged

@Jesse shouldn't you be in a cab when you are drunk?

(Oh, that one finally is on hold too, 3 hours ago: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/12965/…)

@Sid Didn't I mention that I was young and a moron... and drunk, clearly I was not making good decisions
but also... no I probably wouldn't take a cab, too expensive and they would not let you in if piss drunk
Nowadays I just wouldn't drink so much, or I would hang around until i sobered up

Sid
@Jesse get a few friends to come with you, then? That would reduce the expenses

@Sid It was just a small story from years ago about when i got fined... I did have friends with me and we can stop nit-picking all my bad decisions, I am aware they were bad decisions

Sid
He he. Sorry. Didn't want to nitpick

@Mithrandir Not before there's a comment suggesting what should be improved!

@Tinkeringbell meh. feel free to write one.

The standard method to avoid saying the truth without lying is to decline to answer. You say your parents will expect an answer, but not what you expect their reaction will be if you decline to provide one, so it's unclear why that's not an option. — fkraiem 1 min ago

People might want to take a look at this one, it seemed to have slipped between the cracks yesterday: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/12963/1599... To me, all those different situations in the question make it too broad, and a little unclear what actual skill this is about (small talk? telling people not to curse/boundaries/assertiveness?)

@pipe: Then perhaps we merely differ on how to handle real-world situations. I think that if we act more firmly on our moral principles, the world will be a much much better place. And I also think that it is precisely because we don't in general do so, that the world is such a horrible place in many aspects. Hence I indeed think that the best interpersonal approach to such issues must include a forgiving but uncompromising stance towards unfair prejudice. Of course, I can understand if you disagree with that, but not on the morality aspect. =) — user21820 51 secs ago

I am very bothered by people suggesting to just roll back to the original version. That's not a solution: it will invalidate the votes of people that voted to reopen after the edit... but not automatically put the question back on hold?

Wait what? I didn't think rolling back undoes votes at all.
It disputes rude/abusive flags but I don't think that's applicable here.

@Magisch I've worked with police and I have a dim view of them. connect the dots

@Mithrandir The original version was put on hold. It was edited to ask about setting boundaries instead of replies.
That version was reopened
Rolling it back to the first version in a way invalidates those reopen votes

@D.Hutchinson mmmmmm The great new jersey sandwich. And it is Taylor ham, accept no "pork roll" as a substitute!
that's a real Jersey girl, she knows it's Taylor Ham

@RichardU Maybe national differences
cops are more like civil servants here

@Magisch last time I looked, the German police didn't gun down a man in his own home because someone called in a fake threat
Nor is there any footage of a German officer shooting an Australian woman because "he felt threatened"
German police officers are not known for beating the hell out of epilieptic women and then justifying it by saying she was not complying (she was in the middle of the seizure).

@RichardU Firing your gun at all comes with a mandatory suspension and investigation
Happens so rarely it usually makes the news in the town it happens in

@RichardU Oo I see - thanks for the tip. I'll be sure not to settle for a "pork roll", when I go to the Jersey Shore this summer :)

@Tinkeringbell you're suggesting a substantial change to rules for asking questions, I think that's definitely something that needs to be discussed on meta first
@Tinkeringbell the meta post isn't really related at all so linking it just made it seem like you're trying to use an intentional misunderstanding of the definition of "diagnose" to further your own idea of what a question should be
so yeah if there is no actual relevant meta guidance, go ahead and just put your reasoning out there, but it is still something I would expect to wind up on meta eventually

1:48 PM
@ExtrovertedMainMan That could use some pedantic rephrasing... Because right now it isn't focused on the OP but on changing his friend's opinion..
And before I dump it on meta: Anyone agree that 'interactions' in this is maybe better replaced by 'skills'?
> using or understanding interpersonal interactions to resolve specific problems or prevent problems from occurring with a specific goal in mind. This includes interactions with family, friends, work/school associates, acquaintances or strangers (or anyone else).
It's the help center/on-topic text
I was rereading it today and the 'interactions' part is bugging me

@Tinkeringbell I think I understand why it bugs you, but I'm not sure if changing it will make much of a difference.

Maybe not, because I get the impression pretty few people actually read the help center before asking..

But it might help them understand better when we refer them to it, or when they go there themselves after a question is closed, and we might see a drop in meta questions arguing 'why was mine closed'
Or in the reopen voting on closed questions that shouldn't really be reopened
I dunno, maybe it's a case of 'there's bigger problems right now...'

2:06 PM
I certainly agree that too few people read the help center before asking. That being said, it has seemed to me that there is a lack of understanding of what interpersonal skills actually are, and I don't know that changing the language from 'interactions' to 'skills' will solve that issue. Though it could help with the reopen voting issue.

I immediately VTC any query that starts with "how can I" It's token resistance, but still.

@RichardU If you also immediately leave a comment explaining what to do to improve it, I might just agree with it

@Tinkeringbell I'll start doing that as a custom close

@RichardU Sounds good ;)

What's this Taylor ham you speak of?

nickname for a pork roll in jersey

2:31 PM
Looks more like a Spam-like product?

I think it's a crossover between liverwurst and spam :P At least, that's what it looks like to me

Taylor originally called his product "Taylor's Prepared Ham", but was forced to change the name after it failed to meet the new legal definition of "ham" established by the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.
That doesn't sound encouraging... Have to try it.

looks and sounds like spam to me too
esp. "doesn't meet the definition of 'ham'"

@Cashbee Die blasphemer! Taylor Ham is not synonymous for Pork Roll! It has to be made by the Taylor company!

@Cashbee But spam comes in a can... not a sausage shape

2:35 PM
It is the food of the gods

@RichardU Then it definitely isn't this stuff:

BLECH!
no, it's not

@Tinkeringbell can't it be a sausage-shaped can?

Taylor ham is popular in New Jersey because we are strong.

@Cashbee Never seen those... In the netherlands, all we have are the shapes of cans I linked above... with a pull tab that leaves an opening slightly smaller than the spam, so you're never able to get it out in 1 piece XD

2:37 PM
I have never seen sausage shaped cans, nor have I seen taylor ham. This can't be coincidence :)

In the South, we take ham pretty seriously.

Heretic

@apaul Why? It's only for combining with cheese... :P

Mmmm, the salty, sour taste of a Taylor ham, egg, and cheese sandwich cooked on a grill to perfection, served on a Kaiser roll.

I like them best with brie

Yes, and I asked you in my first comment, what do you expect them to do if you decline to tell them? Clearly, when someone asks a question, they usually expect an answer, but in this life expectations are not always met... Because, one way or another, not answering is what you want to do, so I think it is important to know what kind of reaction you are likely to get, since the goal is to appease it. — fkraiem 1 min ago

Is there a meta post about that somewhere?

@Rainbacon I'm almost pretty certain it is indeed a duplicate. I just fired up the PC to look at it ;)

@D.Hutchinson I find it amusing that your question got closed, especially at what remains open. Next time, include something about being trans, and dealing with bigotry, and it will make HNQ

@RichardU Luckily, Pick Up Artistry was already determined to be off-topic too ;)

@Tinkeringbell as were "How can I" questions, which are almost never closed.

@RichardU exactly my thoughts just now. I was just reading the transwoman's question asking for what to say to people misgendering her, and that was kept open and welcomed.

7:25 PM
@RichardU Well, I'm glad to see it picking up...

or rather "How can I get X to do Y"

@Tinkeringbell it's not pick-up artistry. I already have her number.

@Tinkeringbell it was how to approach.
much different.

@D.Hutchinson Then why are you constantly asking how to ask different girls on dates? You can't possibly be seriously dating all of them at once..

yes, approach, transition, etc.

7:26 PM
Pickup artistry is "I know this really hot babe, and like, I want to get her to go out with me, how do I ask her for her number"

@D.Hutchinson Also, pretty bold move after what Shog told you after the headphones question...

this was about how to make conversation when the only topic was a sandwich\

@RichardU We aren't a dating advice site.

@Tinkeringbell He could, there's a quite large polyamorous community in NYC

@sphennings then why are all the dating questions, and advice for the lovelorn still open. And this wasn't a dating advice question.

7:28 PM
@RichardU How can I ask a girl out for dinner?
That sounds like dating to me.

asking out a girl who gave you her number is way more straightforward than e.g. the misgendering situation. there was no indication that there is anything tricky about this situation. why do you need help transitioning the conversation? the question included "I'm not exactly sure what to text her about" and all the answers just boil down to "text her this", which is why I VTC

@sphennings no, it was how do I transition from a to b

what sort of answer were you looking for if not "tell me what to talk about next"

@RichardU Pretty much anything that ends with "Want to get dinner sometime?"
"Here's a segway. Want to get dinner sometime?" "Speaking of the weather, want to get dinner sometime?" "I like turtles. Want to get dinner sometime?"

@EmC If the question had been platonic like "I know this person who is a brilliant astrophysicist. However, the only topic we've discussed to date has been a New York style sloppy joe. I want to become friends with this person, but how do I translate that to a conversation on physics" Would that be OT?

7:30 PM
@RichardU I'd say no.

@sphennings then what is the difference?

We don't do "What should I say?" for the same reason that Writing doesn't do "How do I write this?"
@RichardU OT is ambiguout. I mean that "No that would be off topic"

@RichardU IMO that's also a pretty weak question, what is stopping them from "hey great talking to you earlier, I wanted to ask, what do you think about <physics topic>?"

@sphennings So, should we close any question that asks "How should I approach a friend who is grieving, what would be the appropriate thing to say?"

Why are your sleep habits inconveniencing her? Unless you are trying to drag her away from parties because they are too late for you, what cause does she have to want you to conform to what she wants? This has nothing to do with people being "emotional" at night, which as far as I know, isn't even a thing. It sounds like she wants to talk to you when everyone else she knows has gone to bed. And as far as bedtimes, there is nothing unreasonably early about going to bed before midnight. — swbarnes2 2 mins ago

@Tinkeringbell oh, gotcha

@sphennings but talking to someone who has lost someone is a social skill, and there are appropriate phrases such as "I am sorry for your loss". So why would that be off topic?

7:34 PM
I'll echo what Tinkeringbell is saying. Stop producing intentionally inaccurate flags or the situation will be remedied
8

@RichardU I think that'd be a dupe anyhow ;)

@EmC a dupe only means it's been asked before, not that it's invalid

@RichardU Because questions about phrasing are off topic.

@RichardU (going through the "grief" tag)... the good questions there seem to be focusing on approach, not wording

@sphennings what isn't about phrasing. That's the social skill of "tact"
@EmC So, essentially anyone on the autism spectrum who is trying to improve tact is screwed then?

7:37 PM
@RichardU no. IMO asking about the approach is fine. asking us to write a script for you is not.

I hate to use the term "ableist".. but this is sorely tempting.
@EmC was my answer to @D.Hutchinson's question a script, or an approach?

@RichardU Questions are judged on their text not the answers that are provided.

It was highly answerable without any sort of script at all.

@RichardU a script - you give an example of what to say, not why to say that

@sphennings The text was pretty clear to me, that's why I provided the answer I did, which was not a script, and one which answered the question.
@EmC the simple fact is that this question was closed because heterosexuality is never the answer

7:40 PM
@RichardU lol, no
obviously I can only speak for myself but I wrote exactly why I voted to close it.

because heterosexuality is never the answer?

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because questions asking what to say are off topic for this site. — Em C 57 mins ago

Why not edit it then.... in fact, I will.

I'm hetero. I don't think there's anything wrong with D asking her out. I imagine that's what she probably was expecting. I just think the question is a bad fit for this site.

@RichardU So, what are you going to make of it?

Q: How to distance yourself form someone that is growing overly attached

Joppe KoersMe (M,18) and my best friend (F,18) have become friends with Amy(F,17), we do not really like other people, but Amy was recently distanced from her usual group of friends, so we decided to adopt her. Amy is not mentally stable and has delt with anorexia and depression. It is going better with her...

@Tinkeringbell I made it about transitioning to a broader conversation

@RichardU The problem isn't that it's about dating. The problem is it's asking "What should I say?"

@RichardU that might be good, but it won't honor the OP's intent: They want to switch to a second, narrow conversation topic, which is asking her out?

@Tinkeringbell death of the author

@RichardU Lemme google that, or please explain it ;)
I'm finding a book...
probably not what you meant

7:47 PM
@RichardU If you really wanted to prove your point about heterosexuality change the genders to make the question about an unambiguously queer couple. That would still have the problem of asking about "What should I say?" though.

@RichardU Actually I vtc because, like the majority of D.H's stuff it felt fabricated. As in not a real question. Not to mention that it's an incredibly broad question, about an incredibly narrow situation. It suffers from being open to pretty much any answer, while at the same time being a situation that's so narrow it's unlikely to help anyone else.

@apaul That's actually a good point too, I think it will hit low on the 'good subjective questions' checklist...

@Tinkeringbell One of the principles of the stack is that the question isn't about the author, it's about whatever is on topic.
@sphennings that was just a sarcastic quip

@apaul I too was slightly skeptical of the sincerity based on the early conversation in here about Taylor Ham

@apaul so we edit the post to make it On topic. we do that elsewhere all the time.

7:49 PM
@RichardU I think we have had plenty of metas on editing questions to change their intent though... I'm not saying I don't like it, but ... Well... We can't do that lightly. Even when an OP edits a change in themselves, they might be unhappy with it ...

@Rainbacon Don't ever doubt the sanctity of Taylor Ham to a Jersian
@Tinkeringbell a user can rollback if they disagree with the edit. That's another feature and check against abuse that SE maintains.

@RichardU Oh sure... see that example question in the meta I just linked: There was a suggestion of doing exactly that. AFTER it was reopened.
I think your edit would have been fine, but before it was on-hold

@Rainbacon New Jersey's radio station, NJ 101.5 FM has had entire shows dedicated to it, and the state even has a Taylor Ham festival.

Because right now, it might attract reopen votes in the queue and then get rolled back
invalidating both some close-votes and reopen votes

In NJ, Taylor ham is SERIOUS BUSINESS
@Tinkeringbell that's nothing new, and it's not common place enough to be a concern.

Q: Why was my question closed?

D.HutchinsonMy question How can I transition a conversation about Taylor ham, with a girl, into other topics was closed as off-topic, and I don't agree with this. The reasons given in the comments, as well as in chat, were that I can't ask for help on "what to say". However, there was recently a questio...

@RichardU Come on now... You pride yourself on your ability to spot nonsense and trolls. Don't you think this one should raise some alarms? I'm sure you love Taylor Ham, that's most likely why it was used in the question. It's a tactic. And it looks like it worked.

@apaul I don't just live it, I'll die for it.

Is that a good reason to defend this smoldering pile?

Y'all... clearly you've all got really strong feelings about ham... but can we moderate them a bit?

@Catija this is nothing compared to what north jersey and south jersey get into over Taylor ham. It's such a NJ thing that people who move out of the state have it shipped IT EVEN HAS IT'S OWN WEBSITE

7:56 PM
they're just hamming it up

You know, the weather report for tomorrow is cloudy, with a chance of meatballs

Great book!

But, if anyone is going to be in NJ in may, the 2018 pork roll festival is going to be held in Trenton
you can even get Pork roll Sushi
and there is a pork roll bike tour

@RichardU Yuk... I had a piece of sushi once, I hate it... it was slimy
