12:10 AM
@IntrovertedMetaMan. better late than never.
@Catija @HDE226868 Any thoughts from the "no fun" gallery?

user15026
Considering it was posted just an hour ago...give them time?
2

That wouldn't be any fun.

user15026
You just said they were no fun

user15026
so, you know ;)

Also... And I can't really stress this enough... We aren't here to make decisions for this site. The mods are here to help keep the site in shape when the users can't... but we're not all-knowing magicians who have all of the answers. If we have something to say, we'll say it... but... You all ... you're the site. Don't wait on us.
3

12:18 AM
Ya'know some people use humor to relate in an attempt to form group cohesion...

user15026
@Catija This! If the community needs mods to make all their decisions, there is such a big red flag there

12:30 AM
@Catija Hmm... Guess I can skip the step of pretending to value moderator opinions? :P Seriously though, I was looking for input from our moderation team because sometimes you all see things that we don't, have access to info that we may not, or have related experience from moderating other sites that may have tried something similar in the past.
Same team, right?

Of course... but I'm tired. I'm really tired. And I'd like to see the users of this site stand on their own... show us that they can.

user15026
12:46 AM
@apaul Which is all well and fair, but like...give them time to respond, to think it over, to give the community a bunch of time to mull it over and discuss it between themselves

user15026
Because the flip side of this is if mods step in and say stuff right away, the community often goes "oh the mods know best" and they stop trying
2

user15026
and that's a super super super not good place for a community to get to

1:00 AM
@Ash "oh the mods know best" is pretty high on the list of things I've never said, but I suppose that's a fair point.
We seem to be running short of people who care as of late... The community is still here, but it seems to feel a lot less like a community lately.

user15026
@apaul you might not have said it explicitly, but trust me, the community will trend towards saying it/implying it

user15026
@apaul Then thats what needs work, and part of that is learning how to get that without the mods having to swoop in

Also helps not to be so accusatory...

user15026
I'm not accusing anyone of anything, I'm just working on my past experiences with various betas and sites

user15026
And you're saying "the community is broken", so then you gotta do that first and that can't come from just the mods

user15026
1:04 AM
They can help, they're useful tools, but you gotta build teh community together

Two tangentially related thoughts. Not many people who seem motivated to care about this place. Mods seem somewhat less involved as well.

user15026
Mods are exception handlers, and all that good stuff

user15026
@apaul Maybe that's because they've had to be super involved to the point of just needing a break, like @Catija mentioned?

user15026
At some point, a community has to stand up on it's many feets

user15026
And either it falls or it figures out motion

1:07 AM
Right.
Any plans for that?

user15026
What do you mean?

user15026
Plans for what?

user15026
Do you mean do I have plans to fix it? Nope.

user15026
I can't singlehandedly tell you what to do here

user15026
I'm not even that high rep here

user15026
1:09 AM
There's lots of how this site works that I don't know

user15026
So I can't say "do this" because each community is going to have to sort out what sort of success they want and what that looks like

user15026
It's not really a universal thing

user15026
And it is going to take a lot of time

user15026
And you likely won't ever be "done".

user15026
Even big established sites change ideas and policies and such over time.

user15026
1:11 AM
Basically, teh big challenge seems to be kinda twofold here - how do you get people engaged and staying so, and how do you get people posting good content

@apaul give it time
The site is still relatively new

user15026
Oh yeah, this site is just an itty baby! All hope is far from lost

As it grows and gets new actual users, the pool of those willing to help out will grow

user15026
Basically, you're playing a really long game here.

The voting on this site can give the impression that the site is much bigger than it actually is

user15026
1:13 AM
@Mithrandir Especially on IPS, where you can get those controversial bits so easily

But that's mostly from HNQ. The dedicated user base is still actually really small
@Ash yeah, exactly

user15026
COntroversy draws temporary eyes. So maybe another question could be "is tehre a way to get those people to stick around and be good users instead of drive by looky-loos?"

user15026
(I have no silver bullets here)

I know, was more making a note of a troubling trend. The core users that used to be here on the regular kicking things along seem to be getting a bit fed up lately. May just be me, but I'm pretty sure I'm noticing a pattern.

user15026
It's like the mod exhaustion problem, but larger - if you can't get a community to grow enough that the same 5 people aren't VTCing all the time or whatever, then people are going to burn out :(

1:17 AM
I know that I've slacked off a bit from my regular participation here because I've been stretched like silly putty in real life the last bit.
The HNQ brings lots of attention and inflates the amount of work the regulars have to do by a much higher margin than I've seen anywhere else.
You're bringing in a ton of crap and the site is actually still really small and not well equipped to handle it.
IPS has actually dealt with it fairly well, all things considered.
But what needs to happen is getting more dedicated users.
^take everything I say here with a grain of salt, these are my 3:20AM-with-a-cold thoughts

HNQ has been the source of an awful lot of issues... Hey look a bandwagon! I think I'll hop on, or join the mob attempting to tip it over.

user15026
1:32 AM
@Mithrandir they're good thoughts.

@apaul There have been a lot of days - like today, actually - where things have gone on behind the scenes beyond even stuff like handling flags, stuff that we can't share or talk about. We always try to be as engaged and transparent as possible; the ideal mod isn't removed from the community, but is a firm part of it. But we can't always be interacting with the users on a variety of topics . . . and like @Ash and @Catija said, the community has to be independent.
4

1:54 AM
@apaul I was trying to highlight a potential abuse vector. Not imply that I think that you would abuse it. I'm sorry if you felt singled out.

2:29 AM
my current rep is 1,666 - I'm gonna get bad karma tonight ...
I have some thoughts ...

If you know what you're going to do is going to poorly received, perhaps think about not doing it.

@sphennings was that for me?
because I was gonna add some stuff to that convo up there ^
that apaul, HDE, mith, and ash and catija were discussing ...

@D.Hutchinson Feel free to clarify.

2:49 AM
so ... the popular-but-controversial questions that get over 10k+ views, hundreds of votes and several hundred comments ... it's like ... on the one hand, leadership people such as Shog and the diamond-mods reiterate that we, the users, decide on the content and site policy -- so this seems to imply that they trust the voting system that is in place.
But on the other hand, *once the community has spoken*, has voted, has posted answers and endless comments, and have visited such questions that are popular-but-controversial *tens of thousands of times* in total, we then want to make these question writers, e.g. myself, feel bad for posting a question that got so much attention, attacking the question as a "bandwagon question".
Again, using myself as an example, none of the rep that I've earned from the headphones question was enjoyable, due to Shog's backlash for me. But, what if the community just simply considered my question "good content", something worth checking back in to IPS SE for nearly a week. Why would we then say that it's not good content? Doesn't ... the community ... get to decide that? So, that was baffling to me ... and demoralizing.

@sphennings It looks an awful lot like we're wasting a lot of energy trying to prod users into asking better questions, being able to show one to one examples might save some effort in the long run. See bad question about subject, turn it into good question about subject, show it to next new user who's lost on how to form their question...

user15026
@D.Hutchinson That question should be considered an outlier.

user15026
You don't want that sort of engagement on every question.

@D.Hutchinson The boost in viewership and votes from HNQ does not do a good job of reflecting the will of the community. The HNQ effect is mostly due to people with the association bonus getting drawn in by a sensational question title.
6

user15026
Yeah, exactly. You don't want every question to be HNQ because HNQ is not the community

user15026
2:55 AM
Also, number of votes alone isn't a good indicator of quality

It's common on sites that close questions slowly to need to close questions that have received many votes from HNQ viewers.

user15026
That question was controversial. You don't want a site full of controversy all the time.

user15026
(Also, I don't think people ever said it was bad content - most of the discussion revolved around people's interpretation of it and what they felt the best course of action was, so it was more about the answers rather than the merit of your question)

@D.Hutchinson The second highest voted question on Worldbuilding was closed as too broad.

3:07 AM
I see ...

user15026
If the votes and comments and stuff come all from drive by people, it's not helpful.

user15026
You want your established community being the ones that vet most of the content.

user15026
(also, like...one question does not a pattern make - I think it's kinda time we let that question kinda go and let it be done)

@Ash It's far past time if you ask me.

user15026
Okay yes but I was trying for diplomacy

3:15 AM
@sphennings I wasn't being specific about my question ... I just used it as an example of what the community reacts to, responds to, and votes on ...

user15026
Like I get it, you're kinda carrying some hurt it seems around how it went down, but like...it's just one question out of however many you've asked. There was drama, it was resolved, learn from it (like we keep saying), and most importantly, learn when to let things go

yeah ... I'm just saying ... are we going to criticize the next question that's going to attract the same amount of attention - whatever it's going to be about, I dunno ... or ... are we going to embrace the short-term growth / volume that the site experiences

user15026
@D.Hutchinson The thing is, HNQ rarely gives long term benefit

user15026
People literally show up for that question and then leave

user15026
So yes, we should be criticizing things

user15026
3:16 AM
And we should be looking at them extra carefully if they get a lot of attention

user15026
because we gotta make sure it's the kind of attention we want

@D.Hutchinson Stop doing that? It's not. The HNQ lookie-loos are not the "community" here. Pick any post that doesn't have +500 views instead.

user15026
Exactly.

user15026
You want to find stuff that keeps your community engaged

user15026
Who cares about the rest of the network poking their noses in when there's an HNQ, that's fleeting

Matched regex(es) ["you\\W(really)?(need\\Wto|should)"]

@IPSCommentBot sigh

@Ash And confusing. Because stuff that we'd probably delete otherwise, gets lots of upvotes and no downvotes because people from the HNQ can't DV.
@ArtOfCode I really, really need a comment lock.
But I have a feeling I won't be getting one any time soon.

user15026
@Catija Yep, it can really skew things

weeeelll

@Catija Can you comment ban users?

3:21 AM
Probably possible to do a userscript that lets you post a comment saying "comments are locked" and then instantly delete any further comments
but that sounds like work

@sphennings I can if I suspend them.
... but... yeah. I'm unlikely to suspend someone just for comments.

@Catija That feels excessive.

@ash but that's the huge question -- who gets to decide what's the attention that the site should desire?

user15026
@D.Hutchinson You want long term content that sticks around and keeps people actively engaged with the site in more ways than just the brief flash in the pan HNQ is
2

@D.Hutchinson Like most things on this site, the community gets to decide.

3:22 AM
@Catija Yep. And that also means that it's harder for normal users to cast delete votes on answers that should be deleted (e.g. NAAs that get positive scores).

@HDE226868 Yeah, we get so many of those.

user15026
The community being the IPS community not the wider Stack community

@D.Hutchinson The people who are active on meta, who participate in community moderation, who edit answers to improve them, who help people revise questions to make them a good fit for the site, who flag things for moderator attention, who attempt to encourage better behavior from the users of the site.

Basically, the people who do the work so that Catija and John and I can go to sleep at night and feel confident that the site won't blow up.

user15026
Amen to that.

3:26 AM
@HDE226868 And me.

@Catija what did you mean by "stop doing that"? As in, don't confuse drive-by voters as being part of the community or don't post such a controversial question again? (I didn't know it'd be controversial, btw ... )

@D.Hutchinson You have repeatedly, in this current chat, tried to use that question as an example of something that the "community" reacted to. Stop using that question as an example. It's not.

@Catija, well, Shog reacted to it ...
and not so nicely either ...

user15026
@D.Hutchinson Shog is one person. You gotta let that go

@D.Hutchinson You should listen to what they had to say. You should also understand that they aren't the IPS community.

user15026
3:30 AM
He isn't the almighty be all and end all of opinions here.

@D.Hutchinson I'm not really sure what that has to do with the price of peas in Persepolis... Shog is a CM, he's good at his job, but ... he's just Shog.

user15026
(In fact reall you should take more notice of what doesn't create CM notice)

user15026
because like..you dont want them to have to have an opinion or force them to intervene, that's not the point

user15026
(Also like...please, stop making everything about your question....pick other examples)

@D.Hutchinson Consider it a failure every time a mod needs to get involved. Consider it a even worse failure when a CM needs to get involved.

3:34 AM
Not sure I'd go quite so far as to call it a "failure" if a mod has to get involved. I mean, we're here to step in when things get rough. But if a CM has to step in . . . something's broken down pretty bad.

@HDE226868 A failure the same way that an exception getting caught is a failure.

@sphennings Ah, true.

@HDE226868 but what if I - and probably thousands of other readers over the past week - thought that my question and its answers have been super useful?
do we not get to ... feel that way?

@D.Hutchinson Have the votes been removed?
Has the question been deleted?

no, but Shog said it was a beyond-worthless question, and although he's technically just one person, his opinion is magnified by a factor of 10, at least ...
and that's hurtful ...

user15026
3:38 AM
@D.Hutchinson nope.

@D.Hutchinson I . . . don't think anyone's trying to say that you don't get to find it useful. But that's not the optimal evolutionary path for a question. (I'm trying to find a good analogy, and failing.)

@D.Hutchinson I think there's something you're missing. The *community* is charged with doing what's best for the site and what keeps the site in line with the Network's policies. This includes not always allowing the "fun" questions that everyone loves and wants to weigh in on. If we allowed those, the Network would be full of subjective questions and no one would actually be able to get anything real done. We must keep the higher goals of this site in mind.
That's the true meaning of "We hate fun".
2

user15026
His opinion, in this case should not carry any more weight

@Catija This.

There's several of you diamond-mods on here now, so here's another thought: were you guys around a few years ago, when math.SE was like ... Amazing? Lots of subject matter experts, many that I still distinctly remember, and lots of great questions. Then, there was a long period of time where there was an aggressive closing / deletion campaign and edit wars.
The result is that, these days, math.SE is pretty much a ghost town, compared to what it was in the past. Many of the subject matter experts seem to have to left, too. So, this is mostly in regards to Tinkeringbell's latest Meta question - if we start an aggressive closing campaign, as I think Sphenning's wrote in an answer, this site could soon also turn into a ghost town.
math.SE got wrecked ...
and the effects could be irreversible ...

3:48 AM
@D.Hutchinson hoooold up. You were throwing up your question as an example of something. I disputed that.
Don't get all sad-panda about it 'cause I didn't like it.
I don't like most of the questions here.
Lots of folks don't.
That doesn't mean there's some conspiracy to damn a whole subset of people.
(something you & apaul have tossed out there at various times)
Just means there's a lot of squishy questions here that lots of folks try to answer, badly, and that really irritates some of us who prefer... Less squishy stuff.

@D.Hutchinson There are about 350 questions asked on math.se in the last 12 hours. That doesn't seem like a ghost town to me.

Y'all are gonna have to figure that out, without getting all offended whenever your question gets lousy answers and downvotes.
Because, that's par for the course with squishy subjects.
Y'all knew that going in, or should have.
If I tell you 5/2 is 2, that's either right or wrong, depending on context.

@D.Hutchinson It's the 7th highest trafficked site on the network, has the second most number of questions total, gets almost 600 questions per day... I'm not seeing how it was "wrecked"?

If I tell you not to talk to a gal wearing headphones... Well that's also right or wrong depending on context, but the contexts where it's right or wrong are a LOT more complicated.
And chances are, my answer doesn't do either one justice.
So if you're gonna ask questions like that here... You better be prepared for a lot of half-assed answers. Or figure out how to ask more specific questions.

@sphennings @Catija minimal voting, not a lot of answers, and many notable high-rep users from there are now gone ... lots and lots of meta drama too about the closing / deletion campaing ... you had to have been there in the past to see the difference now ...

3:52 AM
Maybe both.

@Shog9 I'm listening ... lemme catch up to you ...

And if you're not... Well, it doesn't matter what I or anyone else things of your question, you're gonna be sad and try to blame other people, and they're gonna get mad and things are all gonna go to hell.
So know what you're getting into.
I don't have to like your question. No one does.
Whether you ask it or not should depend on your need to get an answer.

Heck, I dislike perfectly on topic questions on some sites...

and that's ALL I got to say about THAT!

:mic drop:

3:55 AM
@Catija I dislike a lot of on topic questions on this site.

Eh... I don't think we know what's "on topic" here well enough to use this site as an example.

@Catija Questions I don't feel are appropriate to vote to close.

@Catija what are some immediate changes / improvements you'd like to see?
that you may not want to do yourself, since, as Ash had noted, if you did do it, then the community doesn't learn it themselves ...
what's like most critical now?
"better" questions?

Most of the stuff I want to fix can't happen unless we have users who are more willing to learn and accept the rules we have for questions here. I'm really annoyed at seeing questions yo-yo back and forth being closed and reopened and closed. Rep is easy enough to get there that many users have the ability without knowing what we actually consider on topic.

I see ...

4:06 AM
Do you? You say that a lot but I don't actually usually see any sign of actual comprehension.

Do I what? I'm not sure what you're asking ...

@D.Hutchinson I've only been active for 2 months and I'm almost to 5k. I'd like to think that I've spent the time to read the appropriate discussions on meta and asked for clarification when I wasn't sure but 2 months isn't enough time to really trust a user with almost all the community moderation privileges.

like, I understand how to analyze things better now, @Catija
for instance, I can tell when an answer is not a good one -- usually, it won't offer an IPS solution, no matter how well-intentioned the answer was ...
before, I wasn't able to distinguish that ...
and whatever "felt good" I thought was a "good answer"

@Catija Are there enough high rep users to bump up the VTC requirements? Is that something that can be done during beta.

in terms of moderation tools, like close / re-open voting, I haven't used these too much - but I can be more careful about it, sure ...
and I think I've been flagging stuff pretty fairly ...

4:12 AM
@D.Hutchinson There are answers on this site with over 200 upvotes. Ignoring rep-cap that's enough votes to go from nothing to access to moderator tools in one answer.

and I've been following Meta a lot ...

@Catija I don't know if it is site specific but lowering the reputation cap could help prevent people from getting high privileges off a single HNQ question.

I doubt that the CMs would consider disenfranchising close voters because we throw rep around like we're billionaires.

I'm mostly throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks.

:D Yeah, I get it.

4:17 AM
I wouldn't campaign for any of them at the moment. I'm more curious what is possible

It's possible, pretty sure... whether they'd do it... unlikely?

Meta is tough to follow, I'd have to admit ... because so much of it is built on top of what was previously discussed in great detail, with long write-ups already. Whereas at other sites' Meta site, the questions are more ... independent ...
it's almost like reading contract law ... with many, many revisions ...

@D.Hutchinson nah, all meta sites are like that to some degree

I see ...

@Shog9 cough
Thinking that you tend to hamfist isn't the same as thinking that you're apart of a grand conspiracy. It's just me thinking that you handled something poorly and that, well, we seem to see the world differently.

4:30 AM
Every exchange seems to have this unkillable idea of there being a secret cabal of high rep users.

Q: How to talk to somebody about a StackExchange addiction

user13925Do you know somebody that gets a little bit too into sports? They'll yell at the TV, curse uncontrollably when their team does poorly, and get so emotionally invested that they'll make everyone a little bit uncomfortable? That's my significant other. Except instead of sports, it's Stack Exchan...

regarding comprehension, @Catija, I did apologize to apaul, sphennings, and tinkeringbell, btw - I realized that I was foolish for pushing for a more balanced IPS site, when that meant balancing it with angry men who were coming here trying to enforce site policies with relentless anger and rudeness ... instead of arguing their points in ways that you suggested to them ... ways that the community follow already ...

One would think that if a CM doesn't like squishy subjects they could pass the task to someone perhaps better suited. But then again, what would I know with my judgement so clouded by "evangelism"

@ExtrovertedMainMan Now there's a question.
@D.Hutchinson Please don't use comments for jokes.
The purpose of comments on main was brought up on meta last week, in question you participated in.

4:49 AM
@apaul heh... I'd hope you wouldn't think I'm conspiring. That was a reference to this

he's ... backkkk ... thanks @shog9, I'll think more about what you said ... gonna brush my teeth ... bye everyone ...

I saw it as a nice opposite to dh's complaint.

... should I stick around? anything that needs to be said now? i've got my toothbrush, ProNamel toothpaste and some orange juice ... but I could hold off ...
@sphennings yeah I hear ya -- that post was clearly a joke question, though ... so I figured a joke comment wouldn't hurt

@D.Hutchinson Then VTC it.

5:05 AM
ok :(

@ExtrovertedMainMan I absolutely love it :D

@JesseBarnett It needs to be edited into a good question but damn is it good.

@Shog9 Oh... I thought you were talking about meta.stackexchange.com/questions/303429/…

@apaul ..... your answer to the addict question... really?

@JesseBarnett That's still not a good question.

5:18 AM
You are giving experience where more than a few people killed themselves, and claiming that that method of support is really the best?

@JesseBarnett I know an awful lot more people who didn't, that likely would have.

then instead of saying "its okay! I abandoned tons of people and watched them kill themselves because of it.. and you can too!"...... perhaps it would be more useful to talk about the people that were saved as a result?

@JesseBarnett Something tells me you've never loved a junkie or been one yourself...

You too have fun now. I'm going to step out on this one.

i haven't. but if i were dealing with it for the first time hearing about multiple people likely being pushed to suicide because of my actions in effort to help them is not going to convince me thats good advice
at least include a comment about how there were more people saved

5:25 AM
Yes there's hope, but offering false hope doesn't help anyone. Addiction isn't a pretty thing, nor is the earlier stages of recovery. It usually gets really dark before it gets better.
@JesseBarnett I wasn't talking about suicide. Perhaps suicide on the installment plan, but it's not the same thing.

... I'm gonna go brush my teeth again, I think ...

@JesseBarnett How old are you, what life have you lived? I love the way that people who've never actually experienced a thing want to pop up out of the woodwork to tell someone who's lived it that they're somehow wrong... Ever been destitute, ever been to jail, ever gone hungry just so that you could get a fix, ever buried someone you loved? F*** this place is frustrating sometimes.

5:58 AM
shog's comment on that question is hilarious ...
he clearly knows who the troll is, it seems ...

sounds like it @D.Hutchinson

yeah :)
funny question, though - I enjoyed reading that one ...

@apaul I'm 21 and I wasn't critiquing your life experience, just highlighting how the way you worded your answer, and the facts you chose to include/omit is absolutely ridiculous! Read it out loud to yourself. You have essentially told OP "The best way to help this person is to do something that in my experience, usually causes them to kill themselves". If you could just have included in your answer what you wrote in chat "That in fact, it usually saves them" instead of going on a rant...
@D.Hutchinson i thought it was a funny one too :D

@JesseBarnett Ya, absolutely, a 21 year old who knows literally nothing about the topic, absolutely knows how the subject should be addressed...

@apaul But I do know how to read, and I know that causing someone to probably kill themselves with no potential positive result is not the ideal way to help them, and lastly I know that your question reads as recommending exactly that. If that was your intention then I don't have much to say, but if your intention was to tell OP that it is necessary in the process of helping them... then I was just trying to bring your attention to the fact that currently, it was not worded that way.

That appeared totally a joke question to me.

@JesseBarnett My question?

@AJ yeah - so I had fun giving the "You can't." type of answer for it :)

@apaul your answer sorry**

@JesseBarnett If you wanna be pedantic, you may wanna get a handle on those things.
@JesseBarnett Most people don't get recovery, it's a sad horrifying thing. The few that do usually have to be pretty badly mangled before they get there. It's an unfortunate reality.
That is to say I met a heap of people who "got it" after it got bad enough, after entering recovery, but knew many more before that that didn't. It's not easy, or pleasant.
@D.Hutchinson was that you?
Looks awful bad if it wasn't...

the dont answer was D.H

@JesseBarnett Looks an awful lot like the question may have been too...

Q: How to improve my ways when teaching my wife

SimoneMy wife studied basic-to-midlevel (by school standards) programming in upper secondary school, but then she didn't go further than that, and slowly lost the grip of it and didn't think about it for years. A few months after we started dating, she said she would like me to teach her (I'm a profess...

Q: Waitresse accidentally charged me extra for someone who left, should I have insisted on correct bill?

bluevaporI was at a pub with a group of people. I had ordered a couple drinks. The waitress made a mistake and got one of my beers switched with a more expensive one the person beside me had ordered (he had already paid for his tab and left). I ended up just paying extra ($3.50) though if it was anymore I...

Q: What should I say the day I meet with my first love after a LONG time

CatheartThe Story Four year ago, my girlfriend of 5 years left me because of many things (alcohol, no ambition, being egocentric, wanted to drop school..). She was fed up with my behavior and she decided to left. At first, i've decided to drink a lot and ask her to come back, obivously, it did not pro...

Q: How does "primarily opinion-based" apply to questions about interpersonal skills?

bluevaporI just had a questioned closed as primarily opinion based. I don't understand what this means. There is no 'manual' or 'applied science' behind interpersonal skills so of course the answers will be opinion based. With a question like, 'what to do if a member of your group left and waitress forgot...

I've got Kendrick Lamar's Black Panther album on repeat.

7:29 PM
Oo is it worth downloading @NVZ?
I'm gonna download it tonight :)
Thanks for reminding me ...
you know what's weird about Bruno Mars' most recent album that won album of the year? it sounds mostly just ... average ... when you listen to it on your computer or phone ... but when that album is played at a bar / some place with a great sound system ... that album is Amazing ...
it's like the songs from the album are only meant to be played loud ...

get better headphones

true ...
I'm broke now ... so ... not anytime soon :(

Bose?
I have cheap Apple earbuds ...

I have Audio Technica ATH-M50x

7:34 PM
Oo nice ...

cost me ~$120 on amazon 5 years ago

cord detaches so ive broken a couple cords, worn down the earpads, both are easy and cheap to fix
but the actual headphones have survived any and all abuse I've put them through
and still sound great
but there are a lot of good headphones out there, these are just the ones I use

I see ...

Sennheiser HD 203's. Love 'em.

7:36 PM
Oo
nice :)

most of the music I like sounds offensively bad out of phone/laptop speakers, speaker/headphone quality makes a huge difference

would happily get the 820s but I don't have that much money to spare

Trust gtx 363... Blue one, because they didn't sell pink :(

Oo nice, @Tinkeringbell :)

the brand name is Trust?

7:39 PM
Yep

hm, gaming headset though :/

Do you want to avoid gaming headsets?

takes a certain look to pull off riding the train to work with a mic attached to your head
hahaha

I use a Razer Kraken, the mic is retractable

I considered those at a point

7:41 PM
@spiralsucculent Ohhh.. I have Philips noice cancelling ones for the train
Just posted the ones I'm wearing now :)

I actually don't ever listen to anything on the train

these aren't noise cancelling, but they can block out most noise by being at a comfortable volume
well, recently I've been reading books on the train
but walking to/from is headphone time

so ... is everyone here against Bose? is Bose for the people who are too lazy to do research about good headphones?
Bose is the brand sold here at all the Apple stores ...

Bose makes a good product

7:43 PM
I see ...

My mom and partner are happy with their noise cancelling bose cans

I see ...

from a totally uninformed (out of date research and rumor memories) opinion, Bose rides a nice name recognition profit margin
but there's nothing wrong with their products, there's a reason that they have great name recognition

@spiralsucculent I see ...

I just buy cheap no-name earbuds and turn the volume up.
Of course, they die after a couple months of use, but it's only 20NIS or less, soooo

7:57 PM
@Mithrandir don't you blow out the earbuds then? I feel I've blown out a few cheap Apple earbuds ...
Oo yeah ...

@Mithrandir I actually prefer that someone uses a good headset than turning the volume up in public transport, It is quite annoying if you hear someone from 50 meters

@Peter I never use public transportation :D
Actually, I've used it a couple times in the past year, but I don't turn on my music then

@Simpleton that edit you made here isn't very helpful, since that's clearly not the OP's goal, see the comments they left... Maybe not go around putting words in people's mouths..
