Q: How to get out of another group's interpersonal problems without hurting their feelings

Rocky_CherryBlastMy friend "Alice" has an older boyfriend. He asked me out on a date right in front of her today. I looked at Alice, and she turned away. I didn't know if this was a dare or serious, so I called him a jerk for asking me out, especially in her presence. Alice later came to me and told me that he...

@RoryAlsop Really? O.o Can you really judge someone in 5 days?

8:11 AM
@AJ Judging is possibly orthogonal. There are many reasons why it could be irrelevant - say for example you didn't want a serious relationship, just something physical
In my particular case, I had had plenty of girlfriends, some long term relationships over many years, and even a fiancée before I met my wife. And I knew instantly that she was the one.
I judged because I had prior experience of what I wanted:needed in a life partner
And that's us 20 years married this year

@Tinkeringbell They're called "flags" ;P

helloo guys, I have a quick question with regards to posting a question on the site, can anyone help?

Sure, what are you wondering about?

I read a poem and i have several problems/questions (7-8) in the poem. So, should I ask all these questions in a single post or different posts for different questions. I think I should post separate questions, what would you say? :)

@RohitShekhawat Different questions... but I don't see how that's related to Interpersonal Skills?
You should try Literature.SE instead ;)

ah, thanks! actually iam looking to post it on english language and usage site

Hmm, I still think you'd be better off on Literature.SE... but I may be biased.

actually my questions are less regarding the poem itself, but more regarding the english language :)

@EmC good evening :)

1:46 PM
@Tinkeringbell Yes, did you read the messages below? A friendly user (NotThatGuy) went to the rep tab in my profile, and that seemed to be enough to fix it.
@Magisch Why? I understand and support it with regard to really bad and sloppy, immoral or seemingly trollish questions. In these cases, upvotes keep their posts visible and ma encourage them to try again in the future. But when someone is really in a sorry state and desperate - why add to their pain?

@AnneDaunted Yeah, I fixed it by switching tabs, mine is now normal again too. Still, I found it very weird, and it seems to have also influenced my 'posts edited' count

I guess it was someone else's (old) rep tab

@AnneDaunted Don't get me wrong I'm not advocating that we downvote them extra hard, but it's too easy to fabricate that kind of thing over the 'web, so we can't make it a policy to let that stuff slip

That would be very weird, and a serious security risk ;)

Like I'm not advocating to add another downvote when it's already off the front page but upvoting something not because of the content but because of the mental state of who wrote it is really bad imo

1:54 PM
@Tinkeringbell Maybe you had Jeff Adwood's ;-)

@AnneDaunted Hahaha would have been nice if it had also updated my rep then ;)

@Magisch Just keep it around zero, not upvote it indefintely. And close it, for sure. Then a mod will delete it.

Keeping it around zero would mean to upvote when it's below that. I think thats a fundamental misuse of the vote system

@Tinkeringbell Just asssociation bonus at IPS then ;-)

the whole basis of SE is that we vote on content. So upvoting bad content to cushion the feelings of OP is indeed misusing the voting system

1:57 PM
@Magisch When the question is being deleted soon afterwards anyway?

@Magisch Suicide posts get deleted by moderators anyway, so if a post is threatening suicide, this is a good approach > Votes/rep will get invalidated, and a user won't feel worse pushing them over the edge.

For everything else, like the post Anne and I were discussing (this one: https://interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/10624/im-going-to-see-my-father-for-the-first-time-in-26-years-and-im-terrified-that) I do believe it is worth keeping around 0 either
Because this isn't something a moderator/the community will delete soon, this needs to be downvoted IMO :)

@AnneDaunted Maybe I'm too puritanical in my thinking there but for me it's votes === content

@AnneDaunted Wonder how hard I would be complaining then ;)

So if I upvote something it's strictly because I think it's good content
same if I fail to downvote something I strictly think it's not that bad of content
so a post threatening suicide would be (bad/off topic -> downvote / close / delv) + (special circumstance -> modflag)
but i see your point

Down where I live it's mostly produce, oranges and tomatoes, that get to ride the train.

@Tinkeringbell I flagged 'em all

@AnneDaunted Was wondering, because I did that too, flagged them as rude and the flags were declined :/
if more people find them rude, I was wondering whether it was worth taking to meta

2:41 PM
@JAD the US is far too big to be a train country, plus our population is constantly shifting, and those train tracks are pretty hard to pick up and move.

I don't think the specific comments are all that rude

@apaul We use we when talking about site policy because we are the ones who get to work together to set it.

3:05 PM
@sphennings we am trying to understand all of this

@sphennings I'm aware. Just joking about frustration with someone who wasn't and refused to be.

@apaul It's one of the things I like most about the SE formula. The level of community involvement. It keeps the discourse much more civil than should be expected on a site where people talk about interpersonal problems all day.

@sphennings More of it should probably happen on meta, but I get your point.

@sphennings it's its greatest strength, and also it's vulnerability. When stacks get too cliquish, they die.

@TheSnarkKnight That's a problem with any site.

3:13 PM
@sphennings SE is a bit more vulnerable than most in that regard.

"Majority rule, don't work in mental institutions"

@apaul That's why there are mods and community managers.

@apaul that's only because you didn't fill the bathtub with multi-colored machine parts while I was getting the giraffe

It's a song lyric.

@Tinkeringbell rude seems to have a very loose definition here

@TheSnarkKnight rude = anything you don't say in a respectful conversation iirc?

@Tinkeringbell Again, 'us'. It's just like 'we'...

That makes the behavior definitely rude IMO. But I'll look up that definition and edit accordingly if necessary, as soon as I'm of mobile

@Tinkeringbell Just generally speaking, I haven't read the answer yet ;)

@Tinkeringbell I think the guidelines can be a bit more cut and dry. 1)Address the issue, not the person. 2)Keep it relevant 3)Don't argue

3:30 PM
@TheSnarkKnight which makes the comments still rude ;)

@Tinkeringbell indeed, and I'm crafting an answer to that effect

And it's already attracted another delete vote.

@TheSnarkKnight You're suggesting mob rule? Nice :P

3:36 PM
@Tinkeringbell I'm suggesting "democracy"

@TheSnarkKnight I'd leave it up until discussed on meta ;)
@TheSnarkKnight what's the difference ? :p

@Tinkeringbell We're just crazy for democrazy
But in all seriousness, the multiple flags against a comment shutting it down is there for a reason, if something is blatantly rude, several community members do have the authority to shut it down. It shouldn't be abused, but it should be used to keep the stack from turning into a mess.

@TheSnarkKnight yeah well same goes for deleting posts, but apparently we were wrong about that too

@Tinkeringbell yeah.... about that. too many actions like that, and people will just walk away.
If moderators undo what the community votes on, and do it without discussion, then the community will simply stop. That's happened elsewhere and the mods took a great amount of heat for it.

@TheSnarkKnight interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/2475/… Let's see why first, before we jump to conclusions :)

As a note, mods are part of the community, too. Three users voted to delete; two users voted to undelete (and I would have cast a vote, too, so that makes three). I don't think we can say that the community as a whole had decided to go one way.
I'm also still looking for a good argument for deleting the question in the first place. It's closed, it's not getting any more answers, and any rude/belittling/off-topic/unconstructive comments can be dealt with individually.

We had a user go on a very rude spree here on meta (and a bit on main too) today, and one of the rants they posted disguised as a question here. N...

@HDE226868 which is true, and as it should be. But it looks bad if mods reverse things out of hand. In some stacks, a mod might reopen/undelete if there is one vote shy, and then casting the last vote. Otherwise, it looks like "Forget you, we're doing it our way"

@Tinkeringbell I know, I'm just thinking aloud, so to speak.

@HDE226868 IMO, it should have been, and stayed deleted because the question itself was a rant.
I can't find a single word of that worth saving.

@TheSnarkKnight Again, though, that assumes that everyone else had already decided to go one way . . . which was not the case.
