@dhein If you, a man, open a door for me, I will definitively think you are a sexist man who sees me as a fragile creature who can't take care of herself...

@Noon: Would you think the same if it was a women opening you the door? :P

@Noon which is unfair of you to assume that. I see dheins point. It's not his fault that you think he holds doors open only for women

12:55 PM
@Cashbee Yup, it's closable

@dhein I don't know but I would still think it's weird to open a door and not pass it. Passing it and holding it is "usual" but just opening it for me when I definitively able to do it on my own (because my hands are free), is definitively weird, IMO

And I really would love to add my opinion into that, but I keep compsure ^^

Need to go now, big meeting comming

@Noon good luck

12:57 PM
@Noon I agree on that one. But I still think its sexism just to assume, some one does it cause he is a man and you are a women. Hasn't even to be wrong, but still the assumption is the problem IMO.

the IPS phrasing is "How can I reduce the chances of being perceived as sexist, when I do [insert gentleman action here]?"

@Noon Enjoy it(?) ^^

A J
@avazula There were two scenarios, same case but different woman. Scenario was helping to lift the luggage to get it on the bus. One said thanks and other one said no furiously.

When my coworker and I - both male - walk out of the building, the one who's first at the door will pull it open and hold it for the other to go through. then he goes through himself. That is proper door holding etiquette here and has nothing to do with gender

A J
I offer seat on the bus to whoever is in need regardless of their gender.

1:04 PM
What annoys me most about that sexism topic is, there are already so many things I have to consider, what might be ok or not ok social interaction wise. And this is just adding an additional layer of having to consider "does the fact that this person is female change anything about my so far made conclusions?"
I actually feel due to that in my everyday life much more uncomfortable when interacting with a women than I do with a man.
If I know someone closer I dont care about it. And in my spare time its usually people I won't get to know closer.
But specifically at the workplace this is causing me a lot of trouble.

A J
I must say offer help to the person in need regardless of gender.
But first offer the help before doing anything in non-emergency situations.
If they consider it sexism, then let them think that. You shouldn't be bothered about it.

@dhein I wanted to say something but it's too hard to properly express it in English. Let just say that I won't pitty you for that
(my meeting was postpone for half a hour)

@Noon BTW I often do that still, if I feel uncomfortable with having someone walking behind me. Usually when someone appears to me like walking faster than I do. Then I prefer letting them pass for many diferent reasons. And doing so by opening a door for them and passing after them is one of the ways I came up with working out least weird.
Rather then walking a circle around them to just end up behind them ( I do that sometimes too xD)

@dhein that reminds me of our topvoted question here on IPS but instead of walking behind someone you walk in front of someone and are uncomfortable xD

@dhein If someone is walking faster than you, it a normal thing to just let them pass you. I don't see anything strange in here

@Noon the keyword here is "appears to me"
@Noon And I would appreciate you giving it a try.

my solution to all those problems: allow only 1 person at a time on each street. create turnstyles on all corners.
can i count on you to vote me president?

@Cashbee Allways and ever

If you want I can also have waterslide-lights installed which also make a boop when the street is empty and the next one can is legally allowed to enter

@dhein I'm a woman, I'm uncomfortable around men because a lot of them are sexist in a lot of subtle and hidden way. When I'm with a man I don't know, I don't know if he will act sexist toward me or not so I always have to be careful. The fact that you are uncomfortable around women because you are afraid to be sexist is, IMO, a good sign, not a bad one

@Noon it's a good sign yes but that is a paradox. It's good that nonsexistmen feel uncomfortable?
sorry for the many pings :S

@Cashbee Where do I sign?
@Cashbee "To make sure you're not oppressive towards anyone, you must feel uncomfortable by the idea of potentially being oppressive" that's terribly sad xD

1:28 PM
@Noon Thanks for clarifying. The way you wrote it first I took some offense. This way, I can emphatize with you. But still, I find it unfair, that I have all this stress with it, if I would rather prefer just behaving equally in pressence of women as of men. But instead I am forced to differentiate between men and women, just to not appear sexist, what per definition is sexism when I differentiate here.

@avazula here (link to a reddit gif - trump makes mistakes when signing papres)

@Cashbee I just realized while writing... yeah its a paradox. I have to be sexist to not appear sexist.

@dhein Or else you could just not care, be yourself, and apologize if someone took offence of your behavior?

@dhein it0s the other way around IMO. in order to be not sexist, you have to think about what a sexist would do.

oof I don't like that line of thought that men should feel on edge around women all the time because they are afraid of being sexist
im not sexist so I am not afraid of suddenly acting as such

1:32 PM
@alex.l Ahah XD Sorry I'm out

and if I do make someone uncomfortable it's because of something else, not my presumptions about women

@alex.l We're all sexist on different levels IMO. Society formats us that way.

@avazula That would work as I mentioned before, in case I was able to send and receive nonverbal messages via bodylanguage or in subtext or that alike. But since in the past it happened to me that people took offense and me not realizing it made things worse, since I couldn't clarify till it was too late, it seems to not work for me just not thinking about it.

1:34 PM
@avazula yep, I wouldn't dare to say I am not sexist, but I don't want to come over as such. probably thats even adding to the problem for me.
... Knowing that I actually AM to some degree...

@dhein I know it's kinda sad but I'd not really trust a man openly saying he's not sexist. Sounds like "I'm not racist! I have a [insert any ethnic minority] friend!" to me ...

@avazula Love that one xD

Usually when a man tells me this it goes like "I'm not sexist but I hate feminists / feminists are the worst / feminists want to turn men into slaves "

that's totally fair haha, I just know myself enough to not be afraid of "being sexist", if that makes sense... like, we don't need to live in fear of being thought of as assholes just because assholes exist

The difficult part of the whole sexism issue is that women are different than men. It's just that some differences are dangerous when generalized (i.e. woman is more emotional than man) and some are less so (i.e. woman is physically weaker than man)

1:37 PM
not to say I don't see room for improvement in my social skills

@alex.l Now you really sound like my SO o_o

just be empathetic and earnest with people you talk to face to face, works for me :)

@Cashbee It's all in the average, at least for the examples you're giving ("women are generally physically weaker than men"). Feminism is truly about getting legal equality between men, women and non-binary people. Sad thing is, it's not how media depict it.

@avazula "I am / I am not ...... BUT..." its a pattern to watch out for '^.^

@scohe001 That's so cool that he could leave the door open! Although ... 7 TVs?? o_o

@avazula I like the upbeat attitude! As long as you keep pushing yourself to learn knew things and not get stagnant even if the job does, you'll still have opportunities!

@scohe001 He's really good. We're in a much better place now :)

@avazula haha there's 20 people! We need that many TV's and systems so we can all play together!! Usually a few of the guys will bring their own. I don't think my friend has 7 himself...

Oh, and I lost 17 of the 44 pounds I gained from inappropriate medication

@Cashbee Well I find that twrm more fitting than you might think. But I usually tempt to say „having symptoms from the spectrum“^^ Well, yeh thanks for your.... empathy?^^

3:56 PM
@scohe001 Huh, that's reassuring then :)
How is it going with Ms Scohe?

@avazula Congrats!!! Lil' Miss Ava is kicking butt at the gym lol you'll be a force to be reckoned with

@avazula Same for me. It is so annoying, as better knowers allways want to teach me that I can‘t have autism as I am so social.... urgh... as if they knew me better than I do >.>

@scohe001 Meet me after 9 hours of workoffice passive-agressiveness and I'm unbreakable xD

@avazula Misscohe is dying from med school lol she just had a huge exam yesterday so she spent last night sitting on the couch doing absolutely nothing for once haha she needed it

@scohe001 Ha, that's sometimes needed! Do you guys live together?

3:59 PM
@avazula oh gosh. I hope I never get on your bad side O_o

@dhein Yeah, that's the worst ...
@scohe001 You normally wouldn't. I'm a nice person aircraft, I'm no bite :p

@avazula Yea! We moved in when we moved out to Texas, so it's been a few months now. But since she spends so much time being really quiet and studying she's the perfect roommate
