Q: Are long answers part of the culture here?

ab2As a new user on this site, drawn in by a post on ELU meta, I am surprised to find so many very long answers. This Q is related to "Just the facts, ma'am." OR Reining in answers, but is not a duplicate. Are long answers truly unavoidable here because of the high opinion content of the answers...

@IntrovertedMetaMan. a meta question on the culture of our Interpersonal Skills

@YvetteColomb Wait 'til we get a question on the main site about interacting on meta. :P

@HDE226868 LOLOL it could link back to this meta question, an endless loop O>O

Yeah. Talk about awkward

An unsolvable problem, then.

Q: How do I effectively forestall gifts for my birthday?

ab2I have a milestone birthday coming up, and a friend insists on giving me a party. But please, no presents! I don't like stuff to begin with, I have everything I need or want already, and am in de-acquisition mode, culling all my stuff and donating most of the excess to charity shops. Ten yea...

How do I get a question protected?

11:50 AM
@AJ Raise a custom flag - although if things are bad enough, the system will automatically protect it. What question do you have in mind?

Q: How can I get someone to say their first name without letting on that I've forgotten?

A JI often face the problem of forgetting name of a person who I last met a while ago. This can lead to an awkward situation when asking what their name is. How can I elicit them to say their name, without letting them know that I've forgotten?

but who'll handle this flag?

@AJ Oh, right.
@AJ A Community Manager, likely.

Q: As a runner, should I move onto the road to avoid a collision?

HDE 226868I run daily, training in a suburban area with poor sidewalks. From time to time, I'll encounter a pedestrian going in the opposite direction. The sidewalk isn't quite wide enough for us both to pass, so one of us has to move to the side. I'm typically the one to do it; I'm moving faster, and so I...

Q: Is it worth being friends with a person who is 2-faced?

Abhigyan ChattopadhyayI have a friend, whom I have known since we were both in 2nd grade. She has a different set of behaviours for different people. For example, when she's around the people she wants to be friends with, she tries to stay away from people whom she thinks her friends consider 'un-cool', but when she's...

Q: How do I get a delusional friend to seek professional help?

DCONI have a good friend who has recently lost the ability to take advice or criticism and has become extremely delusional as a result. It's clear that he has a mental disability of some description and although we (me and other close friends) have tried to accommodate him and give him the support he...

Q: How can I respond to "It's because I'm <historically oppressed quality>" as a rebuttle to a request?

SidneyOccasionally I hear or encounter "it's because I'm <historically oppressed quality>" as a response to an objectionable request to the claimant. The claimant is usually a minor who in my experience is 1.) Not very respectful in general and 2.) Not old enough to really remember when some form or op...

@apaul34208 If possible can you look at the edit review queues? It's just only you and john can approve all the tag wiki edits I make so unless both of you review them I'll constantly be stuck at the edit limit for a while lol

7:43 PM
@Crafter0800 Don't worry too much about it. Nobody really takes a look at wikis anyway, so it's not too big of a deal

Having tag wikis does prevent tags that are only used once from being deleted...

Wait what?
If a tag is used on a question, then it won't be deleted...

@Hamlet Not yet; I've been pretty busy today.

Q: How to temper conflict in close relationships

MichaelI was reading some of the answers to this question and it got me to thinking. I can't control another person's reaction to me, but I can perhaps temper my own approach when dealing with conflict. Knowing why conflicts arise, perhaps I can prevent them from occurring as much or can contribute to...

@Avantgarde Hey there.

Hi @gypsy @HDE :)
How's the new SE turning out?

Decently. Lots of activity.

That's good!

Sort of.

Q: How to remind an instructor about a message I sent them?

Crafter0800I am currently having driving lessons, and my instructor and I communicate via texts in order to arrange our next lesson. He's always very good in replying, I often didn't have to wait more than 24 hours for a reply. However, it's now been 5 days since I sent this message with no reply: "Are ...

@apaul34208 I'm going to say "no". Writing an answer but, in general, we only suggest alternate tags when we're saying "don't use this for ____, use ___ instead".
Could you edit that question to cite a specific example, though? I'm interested in seeing how the wiki is worded.

8:55 PM
@Catija It's a general 1 liner that follows most excerpts, with the exception of a few which also include things such as "can be used with ___, if ___" or "should not be used with ___"

@Catija Kinda what I was thinking, but it's always worth running things through Meta.

@ExtrovertedMainMan thank you for having a humane feed now!

@Crafter0800 But "general" doesn't help. even if we're going to do this, we need to decide if we even agree with those recommendations.

I would reply and discuss this more with ya'll but it's getting really late. In the morning I'll check in on the meta post. I personally agree with @Catija, but also including it in tags which others may find confusing to use correctly and such.

Q: Do tag wiki excerpts need to remind people that tags can be combined?

apaul34208I just ran into a number of suggested tag wiki edits that included things like: This tag can also be used with tags such as united-kingdom and also friends. This sort of usage guidance makes sense in some contexts, but is it expected for all tag wikis? Seems like it makes sense in cases...

Goodnight all, enjoy your morning/day/evening/night o/

Night!

@Crafter0800 Good night!
We'll let you know if the site blows up or something.

Just make sure to record it if it sets on fire or somethin', it'd be a shame to miss it. If it does hopefully it looks good

@Crafter0800 night

Well, we currently have 4 HNQs. That's something.

9:05 PM
Go us!... and I wish we were able to protect questions...

Ping Jon Ericson, he might toss you a couple

I've been so focused on Meta stuff and trying to prod existing posts into shape that I haven't been earning any reputation myself.

9:36 PM
@HDE226868 unfortunately, Interpersonal Skills will probably have to deal with Workplace style HNQs. Lots of them, with tons of comments, and a bunch of bad answers.

@Mithrandir Guess that'll just keep the mods busy with flags, maybe we'll get a couple extrxa mods to handle the workload?

@Mithrandir I know.
This should be fun. </sarcasm>

@GypsySpellweaver I'm guessing not. At least, not initially. I think that they'll appoint three and see how it goes and how active they are. Mods can always ask for more assistance if it becomes clear it's needed.

@GypsySpellweaver I wouldn't be overly surprised if we got four, given the level of activity here. But there's no guarantee that that will continue.

9:54 PM
We do have a lot of good candidates... to be certain... but I know many decent-volume sites that only have 3... it really depends on how active the mods are.

Very active, I hope.
Welcome to Interpersonal Skills Stack Exchange! Feel free to take the tour and check out the help center. Answers shouldn't just give a suggestions, but should explain why the suggestion would be beneficial to the reader - in other words, discuss where you got the idea for the answer (experience, perhaps). If I use your suggestions, how can I be sure that they will make my situation better? — HDE 226868 2 mins ago

Oooh, I like that wording. That makes a great autocomment.

I basically merged my standard new user welcome (first sentence, with links) with one of Hamlet's suggestions, and added in some stuff in between.
(See in part the last suggestion here.)

10:23 PM
@HDE226868 nice! That's a good example of a constructive comment.
@HDE226868 I didn't realize that I wrote part of it.

10:49 PM
@Hamlet Thanks. I'm hoping to use it more.

@HDE226868 you can probably adapt it for experienced community members as well. In that case you might want to include a link to my original meta post.
