awkward silence
as usual
@10Replies I welcome you to the living room. I guess people are traveling on the holiday weekend.
Silence...
. . . will fall.
Just checking for Whovians.
Hi everyone
02:29
Howdy!
Hello to all. I hope you are doing well today!
Do we just say hello to each other in this room?
That and comment about awkward silence. I must say that I am concerned about the slowed pace of people asking questions.
This room lives up to its name
02:45
I wanted to call it Living Room for obvious reasons. And for reasons I guess not obvious to me, it got trounced.
Well, at least we 2 are talking here
Good enough, for now
I'm from California. Are you in the US?
No. India
@Avantgarde Can make that 3, if you like. :)
@anonymous2 Of course!
02:49
I am from CA, USA.
Many Americans are on the road for the holidays.
@John Duh. Nevermind. It's past my bed time, as you can see. ;)
@John Yep.
No problem.
Are the holidays for an extended period of time?
Well, 4 July is on Tuesday. So many are taking Monday off and making it into a really long weekend.
Good plan
02:51
In Quebec, we've got construction holiday coming up July 23 to August 5, 2017.
But since I need an Interpersonal Skills site, I am renewing my drivers license on line.
@anonymous2 Sounds really cool -- and extended.
That's a lot of holiday time
@Avantgarde You got any plans? And you @anonymous2
@John Can't really, my summer job keeps me going 6 days a week.
@John Just the usual. Study, music, sleep. You?
02:55
I study part time and work full time. So I am gearing up for my start of quarter which is on Wednesday.
So that is pretty boring actually.
All the best for that!
@Avantgarde Are you a musician or a listener.
Second the motion. ;)
Probably won't stay like that once it begins
@Avantgarde Thanks to all.
02:57
@John Oh, just a listener :P
Yeah, it took all my time in the last quarter.
Returning to school this autumn, so dropping my job, but will probably take it up next summer.
@anonymous2 Yeah. Gotta take those opportunities to get ahead. Go for it!
@anonymous2 Good luck with that
This room is getting so busy, we're going to have to learn to use replies, so that people can follow the conversations. ;)
02:58
I am 58. So all my plans have retirement in mind.
Thanks, @John, @Avantgarde.
Thanks!
@John Ah, I see.
Yeah. I'm going to school because I wanted to study certain subjects. That's all. But they do take up a lot of time. (Not complaining)
They do. Which subjects, if you can tell?
Thanks!
03:00
I am an Electrical Engineer, but no longer pursuing that.
Sorry, thunderstorm, internet keeps cutting. :)
I am about to take Linear Programming and Electromagnatism. I know... boring.
Not at all. I've taken both. Hopefully you'll like them
@Avantgarde I hope so. These are subjects I have always wanted to study formally.
@John About time. So, 1 semester for each course?
03:04
@Avantgarde No, these are Quarters. So two courses together makes for half-time study. Combine that with full time work and I am busy.
No complaints. I want to do it.
@John Yeah, certainly.
So you have a technical background as well?
Great.
Maybe most of us are technical guys that want to brush up on the interpersonal end.
haha
@anonymous2 Do you have a technical background as well?
03:08
@Avantgarde Unofficially, yes.
Did a bunch of free-lancing HTML, javascript, css, dabbled a bit in PHP.
But my real tech world was Qbasic.
@anonymous2 Oh nice. QBasic. I haven't heard that name in years. Did that a long time ago
I loved the language. Worked well on DOS, anyhow. :)
Got to the point where I designed a program to open bitmaps on our old MS-DOS.
Had to figure out how a bitmap worked in the binary first, but it was a fun project.
Also made a 3D tetris game that worked on DOS (the graphics were just barely fast enough, even at top speed.
Anyhow, that's my tech.
Sounds great.
I've gone programming, but only tangentially when it worked in my field. It was and is great to do.
Are you guys enjoying the site so far?
03:14
Making a game is pretty good in my book
SE is amazing
I didn't even know there were so many sites within SE. It's very interesting
Yeah. It can really absorb you, eh.
@John I am. Learning a lot, and seeing a few questions that are my level, unlike a lot of the technical SE sites.
Great. I got started on the Movies site. I found it totally absorbing. I had to pull myself away (hee hee).
It's the best technical online community I've found so far. And other sites are also interesting.
It makes into academic circles as well. I was in a Theory of Computation class last quarter, and Stack Overflow was mentioned several times. Pretty nice.
03:22
Stackoverflow is so active. I'm mostly in Physics, which is not that active. Some sites' questions get thousands of views! Insanely high
My personal favourite for views is Workplace.
Wow, that's very active too
I am sure those are all great sites. Yes, the amount of posts is staggering there. Imagine trying to answer all those questions...
04:19
@Avantgarde I know! since we changed the name lol

Q: Would questions on reasons and origins be on-topic?

r mWould questions pertaining to the origins of, or reasons for, particular social practices or points of etiquette be on-topic? Examples might be of the "Why do we say "bless you" for a sneeze, but not a cough?"sort.

How much rep do you need to see upvotes vs downvotes separated? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/177/… seems to be receiving a lot of both I think
750 I think
13:49
but not on private beta?
That was the beta amount.
@10Replies 5 up 3 down

Q: "View Vote totals" without 1000 rep

Rob W Screenshot About The vote counts are a great tool to determine whether an answer is disputed or not. Unfortunately, not many of us have enough time to join all Stack Exchange websites and get 1000 reputation. This script unlocks the "View Vote counts" feature for those who are not logge...

@Mithrandir well it works for me
not to mention that I don't see the reason behind hiding it in the first place (and that it can be retrieved by said user script nonetheless)
You have SOUP or SOX or something?
I'm literally eating soup right now, so I do have soup
I'm wearing socks
14:04
sigh
vote to close as not funny
yepp ;)
I've finished my soup, so I no longer have soup
Homemade pumpkin soup - delicious (it's winter here - hence the sox and soup)
what could winter in Australia possibly mean? like 20°C?
14:18
lol
meh, this room lives up to its name
it was 14 degrees this afternoon - hey that's cold and 6 overnight - freezing! (well not technically
@Ghanima I
dammit
I'm going to watch netflix with my daughter bbl \o
enjoy
15:19
@YvetteColomb also, FYI, it's 19°C here (feels like 11°C) and it's summer time

Q: For questions, should we assume politeness is required?

HDE 226868I noticed that a fair amount of questions ask for a "polite" solution to a problem. For instance: How do I politely end a cold call I've received? How to politely say, "I know, right?" How to politely refuse money from someone who is insistent? A search of is:question polite gives 18 results,...

16:20
@YvetteColomb Come over to Toronto or Ottawa in the winter >:D

1 hour later…
17:28
@Ghanima where are you?
@Zizouz212 I know! it looks freezing, but such a great place to live. Canada and New Zealand are two places I'd like to live if I wasn't in Australia
@Ghanima ah you're in Germany

2 hours later…
19:13
@YvetteColomb sorry, I was afk
but tbh, better 19°C than 35°C

@IntrovertedMetaMan. D'oh! I feel stupid after reading Robert's answer.
