I would say that in the US, a full legal name that includes a middle name not normally used is considered PII. The organization can require it, however they are also responsible for its proper usage and control. I wonder if it is really needed in routine documentation. An appropriate official can check the information against a persons DL to prove identity, without making it public. — user31692 days ago
The commenter is merely saying that there are legal ramifications to their organizations policy. It says nothing about an IPS suggested solution. They are just tyring to add good content to the post -- but it would be inappropriate as a post.
@apaul There is A LOT of bordreline stuff on this site. I appreaciate that there are people like you and others that are keeping the heartbeat going. Thanks.
@apaul Point taken. I need to add more finesse here. Thanks for the constructive feedback.
@John "It's all chaos, it's all random, and it's horrifying, and if you want to try and reduce the horror, and reduce the chaos, be kind. That's all you can do."
@John Actually there is one thing that's been bugging me a bit. Not sure if you'd be willing to nudge someone about this, but the lack of response is troubling... meta.stackexchange.com/questions/302410/…
@apaul It definitely appears that the information they already gave is all they are interested in giving. I do not see the point to try to further this along. I'm pretty sure that my status as a temporaray mod on one site will not help this cause one bit.
A bit of background:
I've had my cat for the past 13 years and it is very important to me. The cat used to live at my parents place.
Recently, my parents took a 4 month vacation and I took the cat to my appartment. My roommates tolerate it well enough, but it is slightly irritating to them as th...
@John if you're not concerned that's fair. Just figured you would have the ear of the CMs...
@John Just seems like they've been really open about how suicide prevention posts are handled and less so with abuse disclosures. Admittedly I'm a little worried because some of the staff seem really great at dealing with people who are in crisis, but some can come across as a little ham fisted at times. I guess knowing who I was passing these situations to, and how they handled them would ease some fears.
I'm female in my late 50's live alone in the same apartment building in Southern California for 10 years, on the autism spectrum and now, physically disabled. Everyone living here is likely younger and they've seen me using aids to walk. They all seem to know I'm the one who calls the City when t...
@ExtrovertedMainMan Hmm, I don't think this can be solved using IPS. Not necessarily because of the broader topic, but rather because this example is so soured that I don't think any amount of IPS would be sufficient.
I have a girl i have met 2 weeks ago. We understand each other very well and like each other. For the past 4 days she was away in her hometown, and came back yesterday evening. During that time i had a terrible sore throat, constant caughing to the point i coulnd sleep and i thought it would go a...
What does a room-owner have to do... Someone named feed made me owner of this room, and the help section doesn't even mention what that means and what I should do!
What tools are available to room owners?
Room owners are users that have some elevated permissions in a chatroom. Typically, they will be the first line of defense when it comes to inappropriate content or behavior in a room. Users will look to the room owners to guide the room. The room owners...
The subject says it all: There is no one specific incident I can summarize, but in general I have had encounters with people who endlessly ask loaded/leading questions and statements that are simply uncomfortable to respond to. Questions such as:
“Who wouldn’t like that?”
“Who could say no?”
“I...
@HenryWHHackv2.1 Ah... than I got the implications wrong ;) Replying with "You make me feel better by saying that" sort of sounded to me like you would like me to do nothing ;)
There are many people who, after stating their political, religious or ideological view, or an opinion in a debated or controversial topic, explicitly ask for confirmation.
For example, "Am I right?", "Isn't it so?"
Assuming it's not done in bad faith to provoke a debate, but it just occurs na...
@apaul Oh darn... Forgot that.. Maybe I shouldn't joke about it? (For me, it's just a thing my mom shouts whenever I say something that can be used at a future wedding to embarrass me ;) )
A friend of mine has been nominated for a rather prestigious award in his field and it seems that this year all contenders decided it would be a good idea to send "gifts" to the judges. The stakes are higher this year since the award has a research grand attached to it.
His wife had made extensi...
That's sort of one of the reasons they exist... I'm not judging the close reason but, like the Vegans question, sometimes you have to go up the chain or do something else that requires their response other than trying to have a reasonable discussion with someone.
@Catija We've already decided to refuse to do the stupidly dangerous things. Unfortunately there are days/times where the supervisor is the only one on shift, so he starts the dangerous activity on his own and then we get stuck dealing with the aftermath when we come in on the next shift.
@Catija Eh... It's a sort of Jerk of All Trades job. But if I said anything more specific it would be really easy to figure out exactly where I work, because it's uncommon and niche.
@Catija It's one of the things I worry about while participating on this site. To ask and answer here you end up leaving a lot of personal breadcrumbs... I guess it's not a huge deal, but it is a concern at times.
@Catija I honestly wish I didn't need to be as covert. I've been thinking about making some changes in to my real life circumstances to make that less of an issue. Not being fully comfortable being open kinda sucks.
@apaul I'm not personally in that position but I can commiserate with you. I hope that at some point in the near future you're able to be yourself everywhere and not have to hide :)
@Catija Thanks. The world is slowly getting better about things, so I'm hoping it'll go well. I know I won't get fired or anything, but I know some of the older folks I work with are a little behind the curve.
One of my questions was just closed with a somewhat questionable custom close reason:
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it sounds like
you've spoken to him about it a few times already, at which point it's
no longer a Interpersonal Skills issue (of how to discuss it w...
My partner and I were in a very casual restaurant (self seating, buffet style) with another couple who we were still getting to know. As we were about to eat, a good friend of the couple (but unknown to us) came over, and without excusing himself for interrupting or even so much as a glance in ou...
@Xander If you have a concern, please let me know. I hadn't seen anongoodnurse's comment on your question as I'd just come back from lunch. Her comment has been removed. Regardless of that, what I said still stands. Please don't escalate interactions with people.
@Catija I shouldn't have posted on her post but honestly her interactions towards me have been uncivil at best. I didn't flag all her posts but this has been going on since I joined. As long as I don't question her "profession", I would rather appreciate it if she got off my back.
If you don't flag things, we're unlikely to see them and act on it. If you have a concern of being targeted, please, use a custom flag and tell us about it.
@Xander Can I ask you a question? A lot of your questions are focused on what would be called 'meddling with/in other peoples affairs' where I'm from. Where are you from? Is this a cultural difference --> Is it a normal thing to do where you're from?
You'll find (in here and around the network) that the users on a site are usually a combination of people who need help and people who can help. Expecting everyone on an IPS site to have good IPS seems a bit... odd... otherwise we wouldn't have anyone asking questions ;) And, regardless, even people who are good at IPS, doesn't mean that they're always perfect at it. :D
As far as I know, we don't have any "IPS Experts" here. I'm not even sure who would fit that description... We have a mix. As a moderator, I do my best to cull out the noise and the comments that shouldn't be around. We delete a lot of comments here and I have no problems deleting more of them.
@Catija My experience so far is 4-5 standard users asking and replying to the same 4-5 users. I know this SE is in beta and want to keep it going but it looks a bit like a clique.
@Xander I don't really care who says shitty stuff. If they do it repeatedly, I want to know about it, whether it's apaul or you or another mod. I have very a very low tolerance for it, particularly in comments.
@apaul I'd be happy to discuss it because I joined to help where I can. My questions might sound silly to some but even if you're the psychologist/psychiatrist around, you could have issues with using those skills on your personal life.
@Xander I don't even know what your line of work is... to be honest. I don't have much time to read stuff that isn't flagged (which is why I stress that you should flag stuff that bothers you)... We're not paid to be here as mods, we do it in our spare time.
@Tinkeringbell I don't see it as a cultural thing. Wouldn't you advise a close friend of yours not to go through with something? I find it important in any honest relationship - esp childhood friends that you interact with on a daily basis.
I'm not going to say you're too sensitive... but I'm not always able to walk on eggshells, sometimes I just want to know and I like to ask in a very direct way, so as to make it as clear as possible what I'm getting at --> I know Dutch people are known for being very direct and that this is not always 'appreciated' - for lack of a better word - by others
Yes and No --> I would say that I didn't think it a good idea once the topic was brought up... I'm not the 'jump in and save the day' kind of person ;)
Most of my IPS counseling focused on when to talk and when to shut up, so it might have something to do with that :)
@Xander There's a difference between telling someone what you think they should and shouldn't do and actively working to change or invalidate their choices. We're pretty careful about the latter here. You can affect your own actions but, ultimately, you can only advise people on theirs.
@Xander Meh, I'll leave this one alone ;) Although it might be good to include Wouldn't you advise a close friend of yours not to go through with something? I find it important in any honest relationship - esp childhood friends that you interact with on a daily basis. this somehow in the question, it gives a nice insight into where you're coming from and why you want to do this ;)
@apaul Feel free, I always jump on making those because I'm bad at making the more subtle ones :P
@Xander But what would you expect in an answer to your question about awards? Not so much what the answer should be but what a good answer would tell you?
@Tinkeringbell "Most of my IPS counseling focused on when to talk and when to shut up" Just thinking that you don't come across as someone who holds back all that often ;) Purely joking here, no offense intended.
@Xander But that may be part of the problem with the question. We can't tell you what to do, we can tell you how to do what you want to do. We need some guidance. We're not really here to give you the arguments for your discussion, we're here to help you decide how to have it.
@Xander They're still chirping away down here. We've just started getting slightly cooler days. It was meant to be a joke about the room falling awkwardly silent though.
@apaul What? I'm an unpopular person. I don't even have many friends... so I consider you all crazies the closest I've got. I've only ever seriously dated one other person and I was the one who ended that relationship so... yeah.
@Tinkeringbell Nope. My husband and I met 11 years ago (Thursday)... but we grew up in different places entirely. I never had a boyfriend until I was 19?
@Catija So you have 1 ex, sort of, but not someone you're likely to stalk. I was more jokingly remembering that boy from 2nd grade you found on FB a while back.
@apaul Second grade? No. Maybe you're confusing me with someone? I had a crush from fifth grade and then high school (same person) but we're actually "friends" on FB, so no stalking there.
@apaul Not you ;) HA HA... Honestly, probably someone I should just follow. It's a SE related account, so it's not that I don't actually interact with them.
@Catija I'm not really sure how the etiquette works for social media. I would guess that if it's SE related, they're used to being followed by people they know from the network.
@Mithrandir Yeah, well, I haven't hidden my real name in the TL.
No, see, now if I cop to it it makes it look even weirder why I didn't just follow them in the first place. I'm now stuck because I asked about it in here.
She was bothering me at the coffee machine today (again), and I sort-of lost my temper... (didn't think thrice).
So I told her something like 'Look, I already know you've got a mentor, you should be asking him these things. If you don't he'll get a false impression of your knowledge. You're not making friends bothering me with these things over and over again'
@Tinkeringbell Just saying it's probably for the best. She'll probably get a slap on the wrist and then things will settle down. And your vamp will have been staked, so... There's that at least.
@apaul Yeah but cooks are allowed to do that ;) A certain Mr. Ramsay pops into my mind :P I don't like my food cold, and you've put so much trouble into it!
@apaul My mom actually cooked stewed pears for me this evening.... I'm the reason we're eating haricots verts at christmas and not stewed pears -> She's getting old :P
I have. I'm not really a fan of green beans in general. They're the default at nearly every restaurant here and they're usually done poorly. If I make them at home they're good but... it's a bit annoying that they're so difficult for a restaurant to do correctly.
@Mithrandir google.nl/… This is a 'Dutch' vegetable soup.... It's made with water, and something called a 'maggi-block' which is basically salty, and soggy vegetables
I should remember the pepper thing for next time my mom dares serve it.
@apaul Yeah... but the thing that translates as 'vegetable soup' here is 'groentesoep'.... otherwise, it most likely called carrot soup, broccoli soup, pumpkin soup
@apaul after cooking the violet fades to normal green, but they taste great, much better than normal grene beans. I planted them this year, they grew 3 meter tall...
