not quite, .com as a brand has a different logo, different colours, and a completely different UI

it's that it's called "WordPress.com" and not "WordPress.com, the commercial one not the open source project" and people are lazy, shorten it to WordPress, and assume it's all one entity

That's how real world works, people don't dig info they just check the names. Another example is Marvel studio, which they use the same name for original and extended universe
