Q: 2017 Moderator Election Q&A - Question Collection

Grace NoteTravel Stack Exchange is scheduled for an election starting next week, February 13th. In connection with that election, we will be hosting a Q&A here for candidates. This will be an opportunity for members of the community to pose questions to the candidates on the topic of moderation. Participa...

Don't forget to add questions for the upcoming new moderator candidates:
@ZachLipton Not getting rid of it but trying to rationalise its use somewhat prior to a possible rename so that we can get back to reserving 3 letter tags for IATA codes (in this case Sembach Kaserne). Already [sex] is somewhat ambiguous (gender/copulation/both?)
For example the Accepted (high-voted) answer here seems to have nothing specially to do with gender or copulation - would probably have been the same (IMO) had there been a drummer next door.

@pnuts come on, the [sex] tag is much more appropriate for sex-toy questions than [prohibited-items]. I rolled back the two edits of yours that I noticed. Personally it has come to a point where I find your (tag-) editing more harm- than useful and certainly it is annoying to more users than just me.
and since Sembach Kaserne is a fairly small military facility that isn't even an airport anymore, there's no reason to reserve a tag for it
10:08
@GayotFow Oh damn. I'll edit it then. Do you have references to the updated legislation?
@RoflcoptrException Yup. I cast the last close vote. The question went on hold. I refreshed. Got the popup. Refreshed again. Same popup.
@RoflcoptrException Thanks for the help my man.
Are we really having another election?
So the mods asked for more mods? How come? @RoflcoptrException @MarkMayo
@JoErNanO I had to reopen it and close it immediately
@JoErNanO yes, there will be an additional moderator
@RoflcoptrException So something was wrong with that question I guess?
probably, but difficult to say
Have you toured the world like you wanted to, yet?
I'm currently writing my phd manuscript fyi. That's one of the reasons I disappeared lately.
I did but less than I would have liked to :)
wow cool, then you're done soon?
10:14
@RoflcoptrException Soon is a big word. Must submit by end of May, to defend in September. But at least I got a journal article out at the beginning of the year.
You didn't come to France, did you?
I did a couple of days, but only in the region close to Switzerland :)
well, have a year, that's not too long
Less than that. Dammit it goes fast.
Whoever told me that the phd would be 3 years long lied. :)

@pnuts why did you remove the tag from a question about people having sex in a hotel?..
The Accepted (high-voted) answer there seemed to have nothing specially to do with gender or copulation - would probably have been the same (IMO) had there been a drummer next door.
@mts The Usage guide for [sex] at present is Coping with different cultural habits related to sex when traveling, and traveling for purposes related to sex. - might you consider editing it to better fit your expectation of its intended coverage?
@pnuts still, [sex] in the title, [sex] in the tags
seems straightforward to me
13:48
@JoErNanO I have been 'pressing' for more mods for a while. Interesting that you ask in the middle of "too many edits" complaints because most of the recent edits have been a direct result of slow/no reaction from mods (ours/Community?) for months.
@JonathanReez But the "theme" of that Q was the noise (for which we have no tag) - that was disturbing sleep. Would you expect, say, a tag [burj-khalifa] for Elevated viewpoint to photograph Burj Khalifa, Dubai - where at least that is a unique, static location?
@pnuts still, having an extra tag is okay if it's relevant at all
I don't see the need for the edit
We have (and need) an exceedingly high proportion of tags to Qs/As. Already there is barely one Q a day that is tagged according to the 'consensus' conventions. So practically every new Q needs an edit (often gets several). Then new tags mean editing 'old' Qs in some cases (because now applicable but not then available) - that is a LOT of 'housekeeping'.
Would you want a new Q/A pair for every source of guest-originated noise that might disturb sleep? - the existing A seems comprehensive for far more than enthusiastic rumpy-pumpy.
14:03
@pnuts no, but the tag is okay to stay
Yet that Q seems a bad fit for Coping with different cultural habits related to sex when traveling, and traveling for purposes related to sex. As far as I am aware noisy intercourse is not a cultural thing and we don't know the motives of either the person who asked or the couple (or more?) making the noise.
14:29
@pnuts What's the too many edits complaint?
@GayotFow What is the BIVS scheme?
Also, how are you doing old chap? @GayotFow
@M.A.R. Yo dude!
@pnuts it's only a minor detail in the end and I think we should strive for more tags if in doubt
in any cause applauds to your work
as for those who don't like it... get a life, people :)
@JoErNanO Some background here
@JoErNanO The British Irish Visa Scheme - a sort of two-country Schengen for Chinese and Indians.
@JonathanReez I admit to some reluctance to add more at present - until the worst of the deficiencies we already have are attended to (but have just added [sex-toys]!) It does not help when a very high rep user adds a tag and declines to give it a Usage guide on the basis that he does not know what it means :(
15:11
@pnuts it's really weird that the two countries don't have a 100% overlapping visa policy
the mainland's border union has 20+ members and they agree on adding/removing countries and respecting each other's visas just fine
it's not like you can't cross into the UK easily with an Irish visa if needed
They are supposedly working towards that - China and India were just 'phase 1', "testing the water" and ironing out issues.
... and not such a bad start - more than 1/3rd of the world's population!

Q: I was refused a Standard Visitor visa, so how should I reapply?

user55582Last year in December I applied for a UK Standard Visitor visa and it was refused on the grounds that I didn't satisfy the ECO I met the requirements of paragraph 4.2 of Appendix V: Immigration Rules for Visitors. 21:06
Yes
this is the new craze from Africa apparently
I wonder if they really try to join the UK army or are scammed into false visa applications.
21:25
yeah I was surprised to learn that the UK army just sort of expects you to show up and doesn't really get involved with visas besides sending an invitation letter
it stands to reason that most people prepared to fly several thousand miles and join the military of a foreign government probably don't have much in the way of ties to their home
"Oh yes officer, I'll absolutely return home after my visit as promised because I have my job, family to take care of, etc..., but if the Army takes me, nevermind all that, I won't go home and will spend the next few years serving at the pleasure of Her Majesty"
I always thought that you could only serve in the military of a country you are a citizen, and often have to as a young man, except for the French foreign legion.
the British Army lets members of various commonwealth countries join: army.mod.uk/join/commonwealth_joiners.aspx
Ah, commonwealth, not something I am really familiar with although I do see it mentioned enough on BBC.
and the US military even takes some non-citizens. mostly permanent residents though, plus some pacific islanders
the US used to recruit from the Philippines though, and a number of Filipinos have gained US citizenship that way
21:40
Thanks.
