@blackbird still waiting
and @CMaster what .net framework are using?
And ANYBODY: does anybody know if they have a4 pockets stateside? Or alternatively what do they use instead of an a4 pocket? What's the American term for it?
07:19
你好
08:01
@hippietrail cool, i bet it would make a great tatoo
@GayotFow err, 4.5
although I think I started a project with 4.0 at one point as well
if you can send me the dll of the library you are using
I can probably knock you up an example failry quick
THey won't be A4 in the US, they'll be one of their weird sizes (letter or legal or whatever)
just say plastic wallet or holder or something like that
@CMaster yeah, those things exactly. I don't think Americans use them like we do.
And on the other thing, I used string manipulation that appears to work. It's not as 'official' as using a scientific method.
I made the delivery yesterday. And now I'm working on it from personal interest because I like the concept for myself :)
08:35
Chat room very sparse. @Neanderthal is having a strop and won't be back for a while; and I don't know where @JoErNanO is. My two allies who double check my stuff are missing :(

2 hours later…
10:29
@GayotFow who's waiting for what ?
@blackbird Waiting for you to put an answer in for that Saudi guy
10:53
@blackbird then ping me :)
11:27
once we get up to about 100 views we can decide to delete it. Right now it has 53, about half-way there.
ok, now deleted
Why the need to delete it?
@CMaster poor community reception, too broad (1), unclear (2)
12:37
@GayotFow but you've already answered that one
@blackbird I saw it earlier, but then reread it
it is an answer to the question, I decided to leave it
@CMaster I'm still on the fence with A like this
we've had some like that where it was a genuine A but it was promoting some product or website and people flagged it as spam
@GayotFow did you speak to neanderthal offline ? too bad he's away

2 hours later…
15:11
@blackbird Yes. People were beating him up because he's a Saudi. A low point in the community's life
Thats an errr, interesting take on events
@CMaster I wasn't there and only have what he said. It was very disappointing to hear what happened.
15:27
hm I have to agree with CMaster on this one, that's not quite what happened, even though I sided with neanderthal in the debate
then I tried to mediate and it didn't work
I think it compounded with the other clash on the question of how to pronounce Giza in Arabic
My interpretation was that he misread what was said
took it as saying "Saudi Arabia is a poor shithole"
and then went off on one
and any critcism of this atttitude could be dismissed as "racist white people"
Were you a participant?
minor
I rolled back an edit he made
to remove the mention of SA from the answer
I could see why the answer would be seenas a problem
"The worse the visa regime the worse the country"
but to my mind, that should get the post flagged (and possibly removed)
not just the one example that a user feels close to removed
quite frankly I think that post was needlessly contentious, but neanderthal took it personally
He's a good lad
15:33
as said, I could see why people would dislike the answer
but I didn't like the idea of removing each nation one by one
I know he is
as an individual got offended to see their faourite nation on there
either it's acceptable to say, or not
but he had it in his head that somehow the answer was trying to say that Saudi was poor (it wasn't)
and that seemed to be the main objection
poor as in literally or that it's a terrible place to be ?
literally
because the question talked about HDI
nean took the answer as meaning that those examples were low HDI
I don't quite get why
the initial wording of the A was "the worst the visa regime the worse the country", and I think he took it as a criticism of the country/people itself not its government
15:40
yeah
not entirely unreasonably
Bad situation to see judgements like that surface
i asked on MSE whether each site gets to decide their own policy on meta tags if anyone is interested
@GayotFow Agree
keep in mind that KSA is an absolute monarchy and the new king is very popular with the people too
so it's quite possible part of normal citizen patriotism to defend their government under such a system
I've gotten into serious arguments with Americans over minor criticism of the US
15:45
it would be a far longer far less fun thread were we to have some chinese users who felt we slighted their government in some question or answer here
yep americans are the most patriotic of capitalist democracies that i've ever come across
I don't presume to know neanderthal personally, it could be pride or patriotism or cultural, idk, he felt offended and I respect his position (though still disagree with some edits he made, name calling etc)
I have seen this also with Americans.
but not the most patriotic of all. you can still have such debates with many americans without it getting heated
Brits are the most relaxed when it comes to criticism of our small island
i do know neanderthal personally, not that well, but we got on well. he's a funny guy with an open mind and has lots of stories.
kiwis are more relaxed that britis or aussies. canadians too.
15:49
He's a very progressive muslim, and he's a good lad. Also can be hot headed
nationalistic aussies really bug me.
Chile has to be somewhere near the top.
i'm sure we can all be hot headed about certain things at certain times. i know i can.
near the top of what
And don't forget the "Soccer War"
15:51
@hippietrail yeah for sure, depends on the topic
chile has been through tough political stuff and recovered pretty damn well. there's a lot they themselves can criticise and there's a lot to be proud of.
we could all benefit from more tolerance to dissenting views
who would bother to have a war over a game people say is beautiful but at the end of the day is all about who is best at falling over and pretending to cry?
Canada is pretty relaxed I think, though in Quebec you could run into some hardcore folks
I have seen American who were genuinely shocked. Gobsmacked
15:52
haha i like quebecers. they hate the english and the french ... and in such a french way (-: and they have poutine!
d'oh i had the wrong adjective in my soccer minirant!

Q: Are meta tags banned across the board on all Stack Exchange sites or can each site decide if it wants to allow meta tags?

hippietrailI think it was now six years ago that Stack Exchange told us that meta tags are bad. They convinced me. Up till now we'd managed to keep them off the travel site. Though I suppose a couple of our tags there could have cases brought against them being meta, that had never happened so I think we p...

anw, I hope neanderthal decides to come back
And Joe also, don't know what set him off
his profile says he was here 17h ago
@blackbird Joe?
yeah, Joernano we're talking about ?
16:06
yeah, that fellow
idk if that last seen is for travel or the whole network
ah no, seems to be for travel
@blackbird in mine it's a ping from my main machine, it doesn't mean I was here
yeah I guess it could be fooled easily enough
I could die and still seem active
16:28
I have never seen the US so polarized
if you say something nice about trump you get unfriended; and if you say something nice about clinton, you get unfriended
16:55
sadly that happens before many elections
my gf was telling me the same was happening in Peru before the last elections
I've seen it in France as well
We get a covey of asylum claimants every US election. Without fail
yeah they also like to say they'll move to Canada if X is elected
though I'm not sure how many more applications CIC actually gets because of this
17:32
The best 'election result asylum claimant' claims it when they want to come to Europe when the democrat candidate wins, specially picking one of the countries which is rather on the left of the political field. (Where the right most party might be left of the democrats in the USA.)
17:43
we joke about that here too
some satirical website collected a bunch of tweets from Americans swearing to move to Canada if Obamacare was signed into law, oblivious to the fact we've had universal healthcare for decades
17:55
@Relaxed mind if I convert your comments into an A here ? travel.stackexchange.com/questions/71383/…
18:08
comments promoted
18:19
@Fiksdal good A on that India visa Q
So I was trying to find some statistics on UK border rejections, and struggling; primarily things like some breakdown of numbers per nationality. Anyone able to help?
where have you looked ?
The data tables there don't seem to have it in them either unless I'm blind (totally plausible!)
Oh, no, they are in the tables rt 03/04
The inevitable case of finding it just after you ask strikes again :)
18:35
Not a problem, the question is asked, you got the information you need, case solved.
18:54
@Willeke it doesn't make it seem less silly :)
@gsnedders, I have always been told that the only silly question is the one you do not ask when you should have done it.
@gsnedders there's even a meme I think on SO where you find your answer as you start to compose your Q
also, rubber duck debugging
19:24
@blackbird Thanks :)
19:44
@blackbird I've definitely done that. To be fair, when posting a question it seems more reasonable as posting your answer often seems reasonable…
Whereas in chat it seems more like noise.
20:05
I hope with that last A I posted I don't look completely paranoid :p
20:16
@blackbird No, OP asks about high risk areas.
I'd use a dummy wallet
a decoy ?
and leave a "gotcha !" note inside
read under "Warnings" :)
20:27
hahaha
ok :p
Anw, that's a good tip, added it to the A
I'm tempted to ask where the OP is going ...
boat trip off somalia
could be far more benign, some people are convinced the world is full of thieves out to get you
usually Americans who want to pack their gun to take on holiday
I gave you a +1 for pickpocketing my idea ;)
hahaha
I had no idea that was even a thing, I guess I haven't been to sketchy enough places
I like the new answer. Now it's a desparate armed robbery
"I do try to have sufficient resources available that, were I to awaken naked in a ditch, I would still be able to get on a flight home without too much additional trauma"
20:34
this has the potential to become a hot Q with lots of weirdo A (including mine :p)
Some potential material here:
I should have checked that url before opening it at work
oh well :p
Forgot I'm on holiday :)
Are you still in Hawaii ?
If you get a body cavity search when you leave work today, don't blame me
yeah
20:40
ah so that's why you're only making 500 rep per day lately ? :p
I'm rep bankrupt almost!
hiding drugs in various body parts is interesting googling
who knew you could hide drugs up your nose?
without sniffing them ?
maybe I shouldn't be discussing this before a trip to the US :p
might want to start your vpn up
anw, I have to go
cheers
cheerio
