excellent
if you've been there it'll be cool too as you can try and recognise places from above!

Disaster Recovery

Proposed Q&A site for survivors of disaster recovery, be it cities or people, or relatives, often have zero information about what is happening, or support to help continue. This could be a place for that.

Currently in definition.

An idea I proposed, thought some travel people may find it interesting
being from Chch, I'd love such a site to have existed

The only problem with it that I can see is that you're not likely to have long-term members, or to attract experts
an interesting point, although people of the 'next' one will at least have a bunch of questions already answered...
Well, a lot of the questions will be country/disaster specific
And a -lot- of them will be extremely localised
I just don't know if a Q&A site is really a good fit for that topic. On the other hand I can see how it'd be useful if I'd just experienced a disaster. But that's because I'm used to stackexchange and am in that mindset of obtaining information
As well, getting it out of beta will be really hard. You need disasters to keep happening often to drive traffic.

lol, true

oh, the sweet nectar of moderation!

Was it necessary to use the moderator tools again? :D
no, I just got access to them :)
cool
is it rep-based?
ah so you're not talking about travel SE? :D
i see you are :D
I am :)
have 2001 currently
09:25
i see
congrats!
09:48
Ooh congrats @MartinTapankov!
I just passed by VMAtm and Gagravarr on points table. You're next, @Roflcoptr
haha no
@hippietrail is next
10:19
btw
when exactly do we use . Every time a question about a country in Europe is asked? Or only if the question is about Europe in general?
about Europe in general
no use for it on questions which are already country/city/region-tagged

Q: What museums and attractions in London offer interactive exhibits for blind people?

victoriahI'll be visiting London next year with my in laws, of which my father-in-law is blind. Since London is basically just wandering around and looking at things, our trip could get very boring very quickly for him. I know some museums might have interactive exhibits (like things that you can touch),...

should we change the title to "visually impaired" people?
IOW, how do you guys feel about "politically correct" terminology?

1 hour later…
16:16
I don't have a problem as such with 'blind' since it's a specific state of condition, and that's okay. I used 'visually impaired' because such resources can also be used by people with poor vision, because there are many people who aren't legally blind but have conditions that prevent them from seeing there environment properly. (I'm obviously not referring merely to people who wear glasses.)
I think on the whole at a lot of places, terms such as 'visually impaired', 'hearing impaired'...whatever you want to call it is now being used is because of greater awareness of how there can be a wide range of conditions rather than just blindness or deafness respectively.

roflcoptr is back
the lava question is slowly creeping up to the top of the hot list
it is really a good question
22:10
hmm do you think a question about visiting villages with rude name is ontopic? Because once I did a bike tour from Fucking to Petting and now i wonder if there are other funny routes available?
very unusual, but if you are a little more specific what constitutes a "rude name", then it might work
i.e. rude in English, or in the native language, or something else
i think it would have to be in english
and limited to europe
otherwise it is way too open
yeah
so you'd be looking also for innocent-sounding names in the country's language, but something rude in English?
for example
fucking is in Germany
I think there might be a chance somebody would close it as non constructive
22:15
but it isn't a german word
hmm yes that would be a risk
i'll think about it
or maybe wait for other opinions
btw i created a new meta question about that

Q: Preview of Google Map links in chat

RoflcoptrIf you paste a link to travel wiki or other SE questions into the chat, a preview image is automatically created. I would really like the same for Google map links. A lot of time we're discussing something in the chat and it would be really cool if a mini map is displayed if you copy a link to ...

I like the idea, but might not be feasible/desirable from a technical standpoint
hmm but how does it work for wiki travel?
why shouldn't it work the same way?
because it's static and easier to put directly, since it's the same engine as wikipedia
ok i see
we will see
:=)
but I have no idea, we'll have to wait for a word from the SE devs
22:23
Liking the popularity of the lava question
yes it is really great
@MarkMayo what do you think about the fucking/petting question?
sigh
we are never short on innuendo and suggestive language in chat
ok ill edit it
@MarkMayo what do you think about f*ucking/p*tting?
:-)
I think this is one of the cases where capitalization really makes a difference
lol yes
but now it is too late
22:29
who's doing what to a pet??
oh right
@MarkMayo .. I don't think you want to know
there's a town with that F name in Austria, if I'm not mistaken
Fucking [http://www.fucking.at/], pronounced roughly "fooking", is a village in Austria. It is home to Austria's most stolen sign and is known for its name. Get in Get around See * Fucking Street Sign. Do Steal the Fucking Street sign. The sign has been stolen many times in the past, lately they have taken measures so that you cant steal it as easily any more. Buy Eat Drink Sleep Get out
exactly
lol
that's hilarious
do you understand the sign below?
22:30
I love the sign below..
kids - not so fast
not so fast please
oh, lol
if it got onto the front of stackexchange, it would take off
hmm ok i'll ask :D
(oh dear)
wait, let's make this worded very carefully
22:31
yes
describe title and desc in here first, before you post
so that we can 'get away with it'
;)
ill do
I'm in and out, running some tests at present, but will check back shortly ;)
Going to F***ing myself
I think it's best if the title is SFW
22:33
safe for work
no nasties
ah yes
but you can go crazy in the question itself :)
but if we do **** it, it'll be almost asking for trouble as you're implying it's nasty
I'm all for keeping it as "Fucking"
yeah
you're right
Fucking or Petting, what is more beautiful?
22:35
subjective
too subjective
I'll close it ;)
Nasty villages in Europe?
I think you should still go with the original version, travelling to places with rude names
again, what is rude? too subjective
22:37
well, Rofl should provide a list of criteria what he considers "rude"
Last summer I did a bycicle tour from Fucking in Austria to Petting in Germany.

[google maps picture here]

On the way you can take a lot of funny pictures.

[include here the please not so fast picture]

Now I'm looking for more villages or cities in Europe that have a rude English name, so that I can do more tours like that. Ideally, the villages should be close to each other so that I can make a bike tour.
hmm criteria for rudeness is difficult
you're essentially asking for a list, which is also not valid
Perhaps, "are there other towns in Europe with names that have caused offence or hilarity?"
By rude names I'm referring to names that are obscene, disrespectful or names that are violating a taboo.
ah yes, that's not bad
one usually goes from Petting to Fucking, but hey, to each their own
3
22:42
"Alternate options to Fucking"
I was thinking to include a cat skinning metaphor in the above, but that kind of felt wrong
omg :D
"Does Europe have alternate options to Fucking?" ;)
that a super ql title :D
22:43
cool
lol
is it really necessary to abbreviate a 4 letter word?? :)
i always do :)
@MarkMayo you are asking about this a guy named Roflcoptr?
so the question now looks like this
Last summer I did a bycicle tour from Fucking in Austria to Petting in Germany.

[google maps picture here]

On the way you can take a lot of funny pictures.

[include here the please not so fast picture]

Are there other towns in Europe with names that have a rude name, so that I can do more tours like that. By rude names I'm referring to names that are obscene, disrespectful or names that are violating a taboo. Ideally, the villages should be close to each other so that I can make a bike tour.
"bicycle"
22:45
thanks :D
and "I can do a bike tour" not make
Perhaps you can include a translation in small text for the German-impaired
so now you just need a title
ooh yes, translate the image
yes ill translated it
European alternatives to Petting to Fucking?
"European alternatives to Petting and Fucking?"
22:50
I still don't think it's a good idea to put these in the title
some over-sensitive SE mod might close it quickly
but "Other European Offensive Towns for Bike Tour" isn't going to get attention
it is difficutlt to find and attractive title
ok it wasn't a good idea to search for fucking and petting in google :(
2
Similar Bike Tours to "Petting" -> "Fucking"
22:52
but it would be really cool if you search for fuck or something like this in google and then SE is the top result
no, that doesn't seem smart ;)
haha
WOAH
the lava one just took off
an extra 100 views in 5 min
yes
very nice
another >1000 view question
StackHQ tweeted it 5 hours ago, that's about it tho
got tweeted two hours ago, and I guess somebody retweeted
wonder what triggered it
22:54
i think the best thing is if someone famous retwitters it
like joel spolsky :D
yeah, but nobody seems to have
hmm maybe facebook
or a blog
lol Mark, you also got a pretty epic post
ah Jeff Atwood just tweeted it
codinghorror
that'll explain it
22:56
haha, thanks. sadly only 1 vote tho
very nice
which post?
on the lava question
3
Rude town names in Europe?
hmm but also does not attract a lot of attention
maybe we should wait strategically with this until the interest to the lava question dies out
yes maybe
22:58
nah, both will get attention if people are interested
or use the attention travel SE already has
yeah!
Alternative offensive town names in Europe on Bike paths
Searching for bikeable offensive town names in Europe like Fucking
yes i like the second one
but put "Fucking" in quotes
and say "Fucking" and "Petting"
we could try that and if there IS offense caused, to moderators or otherwise, we can then revise and reopen if necessary
@MartinTapankov what say you on that idea?
thanks for the comment on my post, btw
oddly with all the views, there aren't many votes
That might work.. but you know that SE people have special powers, and can make it go away without trace and a chance to state our case
23:04
then we can reformulate it and post it again
or just don't ask anymore :D
is it possible to see how many times a tweet was retweeted?
no idea
yes, if you just search for hte text of the tweet, it shows you all the mentions, original tweets or RTs
and then click view all if it's only showing 4
so any more changes or shall i post it?
dude in Mexico with 295 followers just RT'd it ;)
um, er, it's in your hands now
23:08
very nice
what's the final title?
I'm going to go hide and eat lunch ;)
ok ill risk the high amount of down votes ^^
actually if you're about to post, I'll wait and then vote fir it
for
thanks for the help
23:09
give it a chance of making onto the list

Q: Searching for bikeable offensive town names in Europe like "Fucking"

RoflcoptrLast summer I did a bicycle tour from Fucking in Austria to Petting in Germany. On the way you can take a lot of funny pictures. The white sign below is German and the English translation of the text is: Please - not so fast. Are there other towns in Europe with names that have a rude nam...

thanks
bikeable?
then enjoy your meal
it's a word
23:20
@MarkMayo: I think you could mention in your lava post that the info is mostly from the linked article and not your own writing, to avoid further accusations of "stealing" the info from the site
fair point
cheers for the comment on it
always welcome :)
btw the article seems to have stolen it from here:
I googled randomly one sentence from your text and this is what popped up
I don't think the article linked to it..
btw
do you use such software at work
or at your university. to detect text clones?
23:24
yeah, we have a super-secret system called Urkund, that works for all universities in Sweden
apparently the first rule about Urkund is that you cannot talk about Urkund
joking, of course
you just violated it :D
yes we use something similar if not the same
some universities require that all written reports go through it, but not ours (currently)
you can also submit your writing yourself and get a score
nobody knows how it works, and how many of the works are actually checked without student's knowledge
but I think they do this for all major reports and thesises
i just googled it
23:49
thanks
we weren't lucky, the question is already closed
maybe you can rework it and vote to reopen
at least it got closed not because somebody felt offended, but for "procedural" reasons
yes
added this
I tried to search more of these towns in Google maps by just trying out random offensive words. Obviously this is not a very good choice and I couldn't find any other village. What could I do instead? Where can I find resources that will help me to find bikeable offensive towns in Europe?
but 10 views and 4 upvotes isn't bad
