Oooh, I can chat again!
04:55
@MeNoTalk Welcome back.

6 hours later…
10:50
Hey everyone... I'm in Madrid, Spain for a couple weeks or so... wondering if anyone else is or will be in the area to grab a drink together.
11:18
@aditya thanks

2 hours later…
13:01
photo of a Nara deer I took today that made me laugh:
and an auto-awesome'd pic of the Golden Pavilion (all editing done by G+):

1 hour later…
14:04
@MarkMayo I trust you have this well in hand?
@MichaelHampton I'm not a travel mod myself if that's what you meant?
just have the window open
@MarkMayo Oh crap, I thought you were a travel mod. Obviously I need to pay more attention.
Used to be, now mod on expats :)
Oh, that explains it.
Why do I get the red notification button in chat with mod messages from you, @MarkMayo? Is that sent to all mods network wide?
14:10
@Flimzy there's discussions in Teacher's lounge if interested
ah-ha
I'll poke my head in. Doubt I'll contribute.
fair enough, I was watching BSG myself :)
The old or new?
2004-2008 series
I need to re-watch that myself.
14:16
yeah after living in Vancouver in 2012-2013 I figured I'd rewatch and see what I recognised in the sets
not too much outdoorsy on that show tho, aside from on Caprica
Ah, I didn't realize that's where it was shot.
Did you watch the Caprica series, too? It had a lot more outdoor shots, IIRC, but was very short-lived.
yes, lots of shots around Lions Bay area :D
and Once Upon a Time is all around Steveson near Vancouver, as well as Gastown for the 'New York' scenes
Recognise LOTS in Arrow too, and looking forward to Flash
When I first visited London, I had that surreal feeling that I was visiting a movie... I mentioned to a couple friends "It wouldn't be any more surreal if I stepped onto the bridge of the actual Enterprise."
and they thought I was insane...
Manhattan was like that for me
Central Park was ridiculous
Your experience with BSG in Vancouver makes my scenario that much closer to "real life"
14:19
haha
do you watch Doctor Who, perchance?
I try to avoid obvious tourist places like Times Square and Central Park. Then again I try to avoid NYC entirely...
I haven't watched the most recent 1-2 seasons, but otherwise yes, I watch Dr. Who.
I will get around to watching the latest soon.
TV is just very very very low on my priority list--and doubly so when I'm traveling.
(which I'm doing full time the last year)
there' a shot in season 6 that I wanted to replicate
didn't have a copy handy tho
the actual:
14:21
hehe, that's cool.
I do occasionally wear a bow tie...
and I have my self-defense line at the ready:
"Bow ties are cool!"
apparently sales of bow-ties rocketed that year
I can imagine. Although I owned mine before watching that season :)
Making me one of the trend-setters, not the trend-followers.... right??
hipster
@menotalk @andrewgrimm clearly you guys don't like each other, but poking each other with sticks is not going to be tolerated. I suggest that you both make sure the other is on your ignore list and simply avoid talking. You'll both probably be much happier.

14:33
Every year I go to Atlanta for a work meeting... somehow I don't get nostalgic about The Walking Dead, though... heh
pfft, I bet you fly in ;)
Usually. Last year from Johannesburg... (second longest non-stop in the world!)
although I have driven, too...
(when I lived in Kansas and wasn't traveling to random destinations all the time)
Doc
Doc
heh... i guess that answers my question about what comes after 7 days
30 days
14:38
now I'm making typity-typing noises in a quiet hostel dorm, so I best shutdown now. night all!
@Doc I'm lost... are you referring to a previous conversation?
good night
Doc
Doc
@Flimzy about a week ago i was wondering what happens if someone gets suspended from chat again after already being suspended for 7 days
Ahh!
15:09
@Doc there isn't a set amount, it's determined based on the situation, though it does tend to move like that
but not all the time
Doc
Doc
@Flimzy you drove from Johannesburg to Atlanta? that is impressive
ha
no, from Kansas
Doc
Doc
youre from Kansas?
Yes
Doc
Doc
cool.. i was there week before last (Kansas City)
and JNB-ATL wasn't the 2nd longest flight in the world when you flew it. probably 4th
well, maybe. depends what time of year
15:13
Well, the flight attendant said it was, and I confirmed with Wikipedia
although that may not be completely accurate
it's longest in terms of miles, not flight time
A non-stop flight, especially in the aviation industry, is a flight by an aircraft with no intermediate stops. == Ultra long-haul non-stop flights == An ultra long-haul non-stop flight is a flight by a commercially operated airliner with: No scheduled intermediate stop of any kind A route length over 7,500 miles (12,100 km) These flights usually follow a great circle route, often passing over polar regions. As of February 2014, the longest non-stop scheduled airline flight only operates non-stop in one direction—from Australia to North America—and the return flight has a scheduled intermediate...
Doc
Doc
singapore airlines had 2 longer ones, but they stopped them in October/November last year
that sounds... unpleasant
though I suppose it probably still beats having to make multiple hops
I took my flight in January this year.
Doc
Doc
@AJHenderson not the singpaore ones, they were business class only. no economy
@Doc ohhhh
15:15
@AJHenderson The nice thing about a 16-hour flight is that after that, 9- and 11-hour flights seem easy!
Doc
Doc
@Flimzy ahh, ok. you said last year
I can sleep through an 8-hour flight. I can't sleep through a 16-hour flight
Doc
Doc
yeah, so that's #2, after QF SYD-DFW
@Doc: Well, the flight was actually Jan 4, if memory serves... almost last year :)
Doc
Doc
but SYD-DFW can't make it back, has to go DFW-BNE-SYD
15:16
how many pilots do they need for an 18 hour flight?
Doc
Doc
4
2x2
@Flimzy I think my longest was 8.5
JFK to Charles DuGall
I just did a 9.5 last week. And it seemed short after Sao Paolo to Mexico City (11.5 I think)
or maybe the other direction, I forget which was longer
but the return trip was on an A380 and was awesome
I did DFW to LHR last Sunday
15:18
@Flimzy just stay away for 24 hour prior ;)
then I can sleep 16 hours
@Doc I thought it was 8 hours at a time max
@AJHenderson I could to... in a nice bed. But not on an aircraft :)
with a 16 hour rest period
@Flimzy true
It helps that when I was young (i.e. < 6 years old) my family drove from Oklahoma to Montana and back (~30 hours each way) multiple times.
So I learned to endure/enjoy long trips from an early age.
yeah, my family used to drive from upstate NY to Hilton Head SC every year
not quite 30 hours total
but enough that we normally did it in two days
We usually did 2, sometimes 3 days.
Doc
Doc
15:20
@AJHenderson nah, it's not that simple
Although we sometimes drove through the night, too... parents switching off drivers
having a tablet with 16.5 hour battery life also helps
Doc
Doc
for intl they can do more, depending on a number of factors like how much rest they get before and after
@Flimzy my dad did the entire trip in a straight shot once
@AJHenderson Which tablet do you have?
15:21
I was quite surprised when I woke up in my bed at home
@Flimzy Asus Transformer
@AJHenderson I've done Kansas to Montana straight through... and Kansas to Guadalajara, Mexico also... both are 24-25 hours
@AJHenderson Hrm... Windows based?
Android
nothing windows based will get that battery life
unless you mean windows phone
Well, it doesn't matter...
I'm not interested in a tab that doesn't use Android, regardless of batt life
with 16.5 hours, I might be tempted to replace my kindle. Although I do like the free books I get on my kindle with Prime... and that's not available with the mobile apps
@Flimzy yes it is
Doc
Doc
dont need 16 hours
if the plane doesnt have power, take an extra battery pack
15:23
I carry an external battery pack every where I go.
But it's not always fully charged everywhere I go :)
Instant Watch video is the only feature not available on non-fire devices that I know of
Battery life on Windows Phone is crazy good. My Lumia lasted an entire day.
My Moto G dies within four hours
Doc
Doc
i just bought a Hisense Pro 7 tablet. i have no idea why, other than the fact it cost $35
@AnkurBanerjee it's entirely processor dependent (and how many background services you have) my Galaxy S4 lasts a full day, even with relatively heavy use
@Flimzy in fairness, the Asus Transformer is basically using a battery pack for the 16.5 hour runtime
basically the tablet itself gets 10 to 10.5 hours depending on the model and the keyboard dock has another battery for another 6 hours
@AJHenderson True, but I'm talking about similar usage patterns. With Windows Phone, processes get tombstoned and the notifications handed over to a system process. In Android they all keep running in the background.
Doc
Doc
15:26
that's not entirely true...
@AnkurBanerjee depends how well written the application is, account service provision can handle a lot
but there are lots of legacy apps that don't make use of the better power saving features
My guess it that my company-mandated email app is what kills my phone (from battery stats)
@Flimzy and yeah, I also carry a Samsung 9000mah battery pack, because it's small and only $35
@AJHenderson Even 10 hours of active usage would be sufficient.
Doc
Doc
which app?
15:27
and works with anything that can charge off a USB port
@Flimzy they test it by playing HD video
@Doc Touchdown
Seemingly very popular with IT departments
Doc
Doc
touchdown uses almost zero of my battery
And also AirWatch MDM
I've gotten better results than the stated time before for things that are less processor intensive than h.264 decoding
@AJHenderson I use this one because it's 10000mah, and only $26 :)
Doc
Doc
yah, the Anker ones are great until they catch on fire
then not so much great
that one wasn't available yet when I bought mine... looks like it's the one to get if I'm in the market again, thouh!
the samsung one is smaller though
Well, battery technology is such that size is pretty directly related to mAh. At least within a specific battery technology.
@Flimzy yeah
15:35
so a 9000mAh would naturally be smaller than 10000mAh. With a little wiggle room for the fire-catching control board. :)
they also made it thicker, so it is smaller dimensions overall
that's the one I use currently
btw, anyone else notice that Amazon completely redid their graphics style this weekend?
I'm waiting for one of the solar charging packs that actually charges fast enough to be worth something in non-emergency situations.
although that may not be possible. There's only so much energy in so many square inches of sunlight....
@Flimzy yeah, but the efficiency of such panels is pretty absymal normally
Right. I hope that improves over time.
there is a reason that solar power plants use a giant black boiler and mirrors
and even that isn't super efficient
I think someone managed to make a high efficiency solar cell, but it's difficult to make
15:41
Only about $350 for the T100, eh? That's not bad at all.
Although I wonder if I would end up playing PvZ instead of reading my books if I got that.
how does the keyboard interface to the tablet? BT? USB? Or something proprietary?
@Flimzy it is a dock
it actually locks in to place via a physical connector
So it wouldn't be possible to use the same keyboard to interface to my phone... bummer.
but not surprising.
the base also provides a touch pad, 2 full USB ports, and a full size SD card slot
It has a 500gb HD? Is that spindles, or SSD?
which version is that?
15:45
hmm, the specs I see says Windows 8.1
I don't want that
Is yours the T100 or the trio?
oh you don't want the transformer book
TF-100, not T-100
they are different devices
I'm not seeing that
do you have a link?
When I search for Asus TF-100, I find the same page I just showed you
you were on the intel page
not the ARM page
they showed a couple android pages there...
on that page I see the TF103C. is that a newer version of your device?
probably
I haven't looked recently
it's slightly different, but similarish
mine is an ARM chip
15:50
it's amazing how much extra they can charge for 1GB more RAM these days
not an Atom
I feel like I'm buying RAM in 1998 again
but the transformers on that page that I linked are the ones you want to look at, I guess they call their low power processor stuff Transformer Pad now
well, it'll be 2-3 months before I'm truly in the market... I need to pay for some special jewelry first. :)
what, you can't get an engagement tablet
it's far more useful
you could even set an image of some rings as the background
15:52
ha
you could even take engagement photos with the tablet
because who doesn't want engagement tablet selfies
and as an added bonus, it'll give you another reason to take a long flight
though one off a remarkably shorter runway
hahaha

2 hours later…
18:19
On Foursquare, I often come across hotel site names which are branded short URLs
For instance
Has an IHG.co URL. Where's this generated from? I can't find it on the standard ihg.com site... ihg.com/holidayinnexpress/hotels/us/en/aberdeen/abzex/…

4 hours later…
22:04
@AdityaSomani the saga continues: parbonieuws.com/rss/…
@AdityaSomani I guess you are now the butterfly that caused this storm at the other side of the world :)

1 hour later…
23:30
@AJHenderson Well spoken for the Grimm/MeNoTalk issue. Please stop nagging each other and wise-cracking, I am sick of it.
@AdityaSomani Looking for the all-time user stats...holy hell, 4754 !?!
What happened ?!
@all How can I see if a user is...erm..."temporarily unavailable" and how long he will be unreachable ?
