12:00 AM
Nah, the router is acting up AGAIN!

I've been on that river. :(

How did you deal wth it?

Finally replaced the beast dinosaur. Then my new modem flaked out.

Ouch :(

Upgraded to 1G on the router in the process. Old one was a LinkSys from '04.

12:04 AM
Cool, I'm waiting for optic.

iirc it was WRT-54G
My LinkSys EA6350 has been a trooper for a while now though.

@GypsySpellweaver Do you remember when you didn't know the SE lingo? There's always do much to learn about this place.

Aye. I do recall that.
And, in many cases, I still don't know what I ought to know.

Has anyone here used a fibre optic internet connection?

Many moons ago

Is it any good?

Good realtive to what?

3:57 AM
Cable tv connection

It could be called "Good" iff your hardware supports the extra speed AND your provider allows you to see that speed

Hmm, thanks.

Is your router, cables, and system 1G ethernet capable?
10/100/1000 is typical notation on hardware ports

Dunno, I'll talk to the landlord.

If you have one device in the chain that is 10/100, then you'll never even know you have fiber

4:01 AM
I use wifi

:))))))
Compared with wired:

Interesting comparison, thanks @GypsySpellweaver

If you have, or end up getting, a newer router with 802.11n or 802.11ac abilities, then things look a lot better. The degradation still applies, but you can start with higher numbers.

What are the technicians called who work in this area?

The bad news is that, unless the building was re-cabled recently, with speed in mind, it probably has CAT 5 wire in the walls, and the best the router will see is 100Mbps.
Network Engineers
actually, the could be under many names.
Could simply be "Cable Technician" or even "Service Tech."
@s.patroller Here's a bit to peruse: leblanc.com/blog/what-to-know-about-wifi.html

It's like someone turned off a switch, and the site went dead. This seems excessively long, even for a period in which I've been largely out of commission.

2:20 PM
If I get through tomorrow it'll have been a week without rep.
Only 55 total rep for this week. Total for everyone.
Hardly any visitors either.
Or, more likely, those who do come, see no changes on the active questions page and just move on.

We nees to revive the site.
@BenI. Are there any cs teachers, students etc. which you know and haven't invited here?
We should start sending twitter links to many places. Making twitter more active. Not only posts of posts, but also retweets about cs-related things
Promote the site in cs stackexchange more.
Find an "agent" there and....

3:24 PM
@ItamarG3 I mean... it's not dead dead. There are sites with lower activity than ours. Sure, more activity is better, but it's not as though SE is going to shut our site down.

3:58 PM
@thesecretmaster Community Building. Oh, the bitter irony.
@ItamarG3 No, I promote the site to every person, bird, leaf, and twig I see.
Also the occasional chipmunk.

A: The Question Sandbox

Java JiveSubject: What are the advantages/disadvantages of teaching students how to implement their own Nodes, Linked Lists, Stacks, and Queues before showing them built-in types (C# in my case) that provide the implementation for them? I'd like to introduce my students to Nodes and then require them to ...

@GypsySpellweaver Good point. My real interest is this: what objective criteria can be used for HS CS placement? I would bet some, if not most, AP teachers have some requirement for admission, so what are they? I guess I'm assuming an answer of math, and then wondering how good an indicator of future success it ends up being.
@ItamarG3 I have been working on getting more active on the twitter of late. I've been posting new questions, but alas, there has not been much to post about in that regard.
