Congratulations @heather on your third mortarboard. And two days in a row!
And for what is currently the 6th highest voted answer on the site :)

I just realized why it has been so quiet the last few days! It's a Big holiday weekend in the states.
Yup. Earlier you said something was a "bizarre post". Was that in ref my comment of fast action, or the closed question found by heather?
The closed question
Kewl. Did you read the mother meta post I mentioned?
I'm actually going to bed, but which one? (I will pull it up in a new tab and read it in the morning)

Q: Graduation, site closure, and a clearer outlook on the health of SE sites

AnaBack in April of 2010, Joel shared our assumptions about the role of small sites in the newly minted Stack Exchange network: If a site does not have enough activity at the end of 90 days, it will be closed down. Any existing Q&A will be archived and made available for download, but the site...

Very good news for us. :)
02:32
Oh, yeah, I read that :)
We're never closing, then :)
As long as the mods stay on things, were here to stay, graduated or not.:) Yipee!
And our mods are on it :)
Good night, Gypsy. I hope you get some sleep

Q: A Question by any other Number

no comprendeThe main page of the site says that there are (currently) 207 Questions. When I hover on the links though, there is a number, which I am guessing is assigned sequentially. Many recent questions are in the 1300 range. One is 872, there is a 211 and a 14. If "question sequence numbers" are over 130...

@GypsySpellweaver Hello
Are you in?

Something embarrassing just happened to me.
I made an edit suggestion on the site interpersonal.stackexchange.com and after submitting it I realized that it's not making the post look any different than before.
So "What is so embarrassing about that?" you may ask.
There is a chance that RC ♦ may see that edit.
This is how I think it will go down:
RC ♦ - (Checking the reviews and comes across my edit)
his response: "What is this????"

I noticed that having a HNQ here is a mixed blessing. I've had "off the wall" comments and answers from people with 101 rep, indicating that they come from elsewhere in SE. However they probably aren't teachers and so have different concerns. They were once students, of course, so have valid opinions - but different.

2 hours later…
13:44
@Buffy Don't forget that (at least) two of our top contributors are students: @heather and @thesecretmaster
They're admittedly exceptional.
Also, having other peoples views is always a good thing. Wost case, we ignore/flag, best case we learn somthing new.
14:16
@Buffy Yeah, I've noticed a spate of answers from people who clearly know basically nothing about teaching there. HNQs are a mixed blessing, but they bring us strong people, too. Out of curiosity, how did you come by the site?
14:28
It wasn't a complaint, actually, and @EllenSpertus I agree about the local students. One difference, though is that they are committed, not just drive-by commentators. And, yes, a variety of views is especially important for the kinds of questions I want to ask.
I was pointed here by a colleague who promoted it, though either he isn't here or is hidden behind an alter-ego.
@thesecretmaster we always learn something new. we might learn that HNQs bring opinionated comments, and sometimes we even see them bring a whole stream of goodies (Buffy and Bennett are the ones that I have in mind ;))
I note that it isn't possible to send private messages to individuals here (unless you are one of the masters of the universe). I'm pretty sure that was a design choice. It was probably a good one, but I've wanted to do so several times.
@ItamarG3 HNQs ;-)
whoops
I always say "new hot questions" in my head, because they generally are
@Buffy That was one of my biggest frustrations until I was named a mod two weeks ago. And even now, we're basically not supposed to unless extreme circumstances are involved.
It is deliberate, and I suppose it keeps the whole mechanism focused on QA, which is the site's raison d'etre
14:33
and prevents flaming and such
For example, two alter-egos might want to reveal real identities. But yes, the reasoning is strong against.
And probably helps to reduce bad behaviors like revenge voting, too
There was a "teams" feature proposed on SO a while back
I remember that. That was scary
Died in beta
14:34
... teams?
A private chat room visible to small groups (and mods) might be useful, though.
@thesecretmaster it's a recurring theme. It keeps coming back up, but it's not allowed to breath until it's squashed anew
this is a sad review
Nearing my "Steward" badge for suggested edits on SO :)
@Buffy Mods can create private rooms, but only for moderation purposes. After you hit a rep threshold you can create rooms where everyone can read but only somepeople can talk. You can also invite a user to chat from their chat profile.

Q: The Power of Teams: A Proposed Expansion of Stack Overflow

HynesUpdate A follow-up to this post has been made here: "The Goal of Teams: Our Follow-Up to Your Questions" TL;DR: We're proposing a new area called Teams. The goal is to allow groups (of varying sizes) to publicly share about themselves (who they are and what they build) on Stack Overflow. Con...

tag destruction (burnination) are usually humorous, I find.
@ItamarG3 ... how'd that review get approved
because some people really want the editor gold badge
so they target bad reviews, edit the bad parts, and voila, get 2 badges for the price of none
I might support the team idea, but was thinking of something more immediate and temporary, not requiring approval from anyone but the participants, but with mods overlooking the conversation (generally fly-on-the-wall).
Thats called a gallary room. Public, but only specific users can talk.
If it is available, where?
or how?
Not surprised the US users are taking the day off, but it is a regular day in the EU. I assume from this that a huge fraction of our members are from the Americas.
14:48
Go to the chat home page, make a new room and select gallary instead of public. Not sure if you have enough rep, lemme check
Yeah, a huge portion are from the US
Not quite what I was looking for. Sharing real identities wouldn't be protected from general knowledge. I noticed one user "outing" another whose profile suggested they wanted anonymity. I didn't care for that, even though guessing the identity was easy enough.
But then, I know the "target". I still thought his wishes should have been respected.
Some users here can probably guess who I am just from what I say, of course, as we have had many interactions in the past. Still, I want to "hide" behind Buffy
As the community grows it will become more and more true.
Guessing, I mean.
Someone outed someone else? That's a serious offense. Where did that happen?
Search for David A.
It wasn't quite intended as an outing, though. I'm sure.
But that particular david might have been more obscure if he wanted it to be.
Maybe a note in the faq about outing is appropriate.
@ItamarG3 You should custom flag the post and explain if you haven't already... Honestly anyone approving that without paying attention should be given a break from reviewing
Oof - that's on me. I read that answer, and didn't even notice. I will go and figure out how to eliminate that from the revision history
@BenI. You can use the redaction tool... but make sure you read the manual first
Easy enough to to miss, since it wasn't obvious that it was a screen name that was extended. And pretty obvious to anyone who knows a (David A) educator from Brooklyn.
Anyway, I might want to be outed to one or two people as we seem to share world view, but carrying on anonymously in comments is frowned upon and possibly disruptive. I've sinned there a few times, of course.
And of course, Jesse knows David for a fact as we all chat on the SIGCSE list.
@Buffy Slow down before you accidentally out someone yourself.
For a fact @GypsySpellweaver. I know YOU are @GypsySpellweaver. =)
But naught else.
The name has been removed from the revision history
I would guess that a lot of teachers here would be recognized by their students even behind pseudonyms just from what we say. They have heard it all before.
I don't object to people recognizing one another. But we can't out one another
Yes, agree completely
FAQ it. =)
Semi-related question that someone here might know. Is it allowed to have a second, isolated account to use on one site that remains disconnected to the other sites?
15:19
I'm sure it is done -- a lot.
Having multiple accounts is fine... as long as you don't use it to do things you couldn't do anyway (voting for yourself; answering your own questions etc.)
An army of attacking avatars.

A: Multiple accounts question

ArtOfCodeYes. The normal restrictions on multiple accounts apply. You are allowed to have multiple accounts, but: there is no official support for that; it's down to you to ensure they're separated enough to not get merged if you're doing something with one that you would be prevented from doing with t...

Seems to me that the new site, interpersonal skills, is a good candidate for account isolation.
You can use the 'hidden communities' feature though if you just want to hide your linked accounts
15:24
If you're in one of the hidden accounts, it still will show the non-hidden in the profile view in the hidden. Hiding only works one way.
@GypsySpellweaver I don't think so (e.g. this is my hidden ELU account)
Excellent. I'd only looked at the profile from within my own, which does show it.
Only moderators and staff can see your linked accounts, so it's exceptionally difficult to figure out who owns the account
I dunno if anyone here cares anything about leTour, but something amazing happened today. Peter Sagan, one of my personal favorites, is second in every individual category.
Not worried about mods anyway, they have access to the registering email, so they could do anything they wanted anyway.
15:31
The registering email may not help know the IRL persona, though.
Unless you are a deep delver.
@Aurora0001 As an offsite mod, can you delete messages in the room?
Yep, all moderators on the network are moderators in chat
Since the transcript is "forever", if it matters, the hidden account link aught to die.
To my hidden account? I don't really care about it; there's no real reason it's hidden

Q: Good datasets for intro CS courses?

Bennett BrownWhat are engaging sources of data with which students can explore, develop questions, analyze, and draw conclusions in an intro CS course? I'm looking for flat files like XLSX or CSV, or relational databases in an environment that permits selection and export of a flat file. Kelly Powers asked ...

isn't this a bit of a shopping list?
Bit odd, of course, since he answers his own question, but a pretty valuable resource for anyone who wants it. It got an up vote, but not a lot of other action (yet).
Oddly (perhaps) enough he is one of the people that I'd like to talk with IRL. There is such a real person, but I gave up in trying to find an email address to reach him. We seem to share a world view, but I don't know him.
16:08
@ItamarG3 Yeah, I did think that when I saw it, but didn't do anything with it
@Aurora0001 likewise. But I will express that I don't like it too much...
@Buffy As far as I know, he's under his real name, so he shouldn't be hard to track down.
Couldn't find him. Lots of stuff, but no email address.
@ItamarG3 Also, in this case, he was basically just sharing a great resource the he had gleaned at a conference. So, he was adding useful information into our silo. This is a good example of why shopping list questions aren't always bad, and why there's always a judgement call involved
Gush
16:23
That answer is one I'd consider a good candidate for wiki, after he's had the chance to collect some rep that is.
Wiki removes the rep, right?
I don't think it removes it, just ends it. Not sure, however.
let's not use community wiki; it's deprecated and shouldn't really be used to legitimise questions that ought to be closed
I thought it was a tool to gather useful content in one place when a question looking for such would be too broad or shopping list. In this case he's not really looking for answers, but sharing information
Well, originally, that was the intention. But CW didn't really work out, and you can no longer make your own questions CW
16:31
Though, it seems must of his posts are to share more than learn.
But you can still make your own answersCW
And at the time CW was developed, suggested edits weren't a thing, so it was needed to allow low rep users to edit
@BenI. yes but this is q&a. That question makes it more of an q&come-and-see-this-list-of-links-you-never-knew-you-might-have-possibly-needed.

17:44
I got an accept on Meta.SE in... 41 seconds
Takes me longer to reread my answer :P
and well played on the minor site advertisement you made from that answer. :P
18:00
It still directs me to cseducators :P
Notice the link
And you're a mod so you don't get redirected
If I access it from our question list I land on cs.SE
That's what I figured, since there are still actions that I can take at that page.
18:55
How high in the hierarchy do you need to be here to see who voted up and down on a post? Can mods do this? Just a curiosity.
Or, I suppose, to see an individual's vote history.
@Buffy You need to be a member of staff at SE (either a Community Manager or a dev)
I don't think all CMs can view votes, either
@Aurora0001 No one can, unless a SE employee goes directly into the database
@BenI. Some SE employees definitely can to track down vote fraud
(At least, that it my understanding from my conversation with Pops)
Pops?
19:01
He's a SE employee. He comes into this room sometimes
He's adopted Peter, thesecretmaster and I as we learn our way around being mods :)
Hey @AdamWilliams! I love that question
Thanks, I was going to say I found your article about tests improving recall interesting
Not something I'd have expected, I guess? :P I don't know about you but there have been more than a few exams I've taken where I've felt like I forgot everything the day afterwards
Spanish comes to mind xD
If I'm teaching, and my kids start seeming... fuzzy... I've found that a quiz is often the best way to fix it.
Basically, we need a focus point to say "this is a coherent chunk of information that you need to go back and study before we can proceed"
That's pretty interesting, do you have them review the quiz afterwards?
(and if they don't do too well, is that enough for them to ensure they understand the topic?)
19:05
Yes, definitely. I have a whole system of test-retest that I described in the remainder of my answer
that applies to the quizes too?
Every assessment.
Sorry, to me a quiz is a practice assessment
I assume you're in the US?
I am
That makes more sense!
19:06
Where I am, quizzes count in final grades
Just not as heavily as tests
that always seemed to make more sense to me than the UK approach where at secondary level it's usually just one all-or-nothing (standardised) exam
Your make-up policy seems more reasonable than my university's equivalent, though :P
That's essentially just because the government thinks it's "more rigorous" to have linear exams rather than modules, though
Oh, yes. I dislike that system very much. My UK-based friends all suffered through that. And when my wife studied at Oxford for a semester, she has to do that as well. Law School here still works that way, though.
@Aurora0001 Yeah, sadly. Though that was still a component for the more modular subjects when I did them, just to a lesser extent
I don't use tests much, bur for assignments I always permit re-do (almost recursively). Even after the assignment is discussed. Just do-ing the work, even after being told how, adds learning imo
Not for full marks, though
19:09
how do you cap it?
Here, if I resit a module exam it gets capped to 40/100
(which is an unclassified pass w/o honours)
I also constantly send my kids back to refactor
I never felt the need to cap it, but many re-dos could still get you 90. But you had to keep up on the other work while you re-worked stuff, of course.
Right, yes
It let some students recover from a disaster. But some others tended to get caught in a loop and I had to step in and advise moving on.
Mostly, as both a student and prof, I've been in non-rigid systems. I once took a physics course in which my exam grade pattern was (approx) F, D, C, B, A. Luckily the prof graded on the trend, not the average.
Luckily for me he had few constraints - and that wasn't any stated policy.
I think that's pretty reasonable
I did poorly in a large majority of my first year further mathematics stuff (prior to university) and redid all of it
luckily there was no cap there or I probably wouldn't have ended up studying at unviersity
19:43
I talked about drive by visitors earlier here today. I just got a really good edit suggestion from such a one on cseducators.stackexchange.com/questions/1347/…
Yeah, you'll find that some of them are great, some less so. And you'll also find that some of the not-so-great-ones turn into really valuable members if they actually stick around. There really is quite a learning curve here.
That's why I try so hard to be as welcoming as I can be to first time users, even if their first answer or question isn't great.
