@JudyOakley The norms take a long time to get used to, but for the most part, the people concerned with how good a question is (this is assuming I've understood your question) are acting as custodians for that grand library.
There are rules, there are norms, and there are underlying principles that can override the norms in the instance of particular questions and answers.

12:25 AM
I also think that when we have a HNQ some of the drive by visitors are overly harsh since the people at SO seem to be more driven by testosterone than some others. It isn't trolling really, at not usually, but some come close to the line. It isn't so bad when it is quieter here. But we do need the traffic.
Moreover, some of the "visitors" don't really understand teaching and think of it as just something like spoken wikipedia - content delivery and everyone for him/herself.

I guess I just need to be thicker-skinned. So I played in the sandbox but I don't feel like it's right at all - too listy, too much opinion (see, I'm getting the jargon!) and I don't really know what I'm asking myself, or if it's even useful. Maybe you ladies and gentlemen can help. But I'm off for tonight. Up at 5 tomorrow to see my babies. TTYL.

@JudyOakley At the moment, according to the stats on Area 51, we have only 162 avid users, users with more than 200 rep. out of 4,515 total registered users. You've been here 20 days and already you're ranked #64 all-time for the site. (#7 for the month). You are in the top 4% overall and top 12% of the avid users.

A: The Question Sandbox

Judy OakleySubject: How should CS students maintain/build a portfolio of their coding skills as they progress through school? Many high schools, mine included, are encouraging, if not requiring, students to build an online portfolio showcasing their achievements and growth through their high school career ...

You are going to help make the norms for the site.

12:52 AM
@JudyOakley I have to say that the regulars here are a lot of the draw, IMO. They're a pretty amazing bunch. The drive-by folks are a mix, but the regulars are pretty consistently great people.

@BenI. Glad to see that you're here now. At least half-way, anyway.

I'm sorry I haven't been around tonight, and now I must off to bed. Tomorrow is another day.

Q: C++ binary operator overloading and destructor

user41375I am getting two errors in the program. 1.Member identifier expected 2.parameter 'obj2' is never used.

3 hours later…
10:31 AM
Bam, closed.

@JudyOakley, holler if you are available. I have comments about portfolios.

11:16 AM
Hi guys, I am at school, but in first period. Second period planning I will come back. Good morning!

Q: A meaningful exercise that requires using a destructor

Erel Segal-HaleviI am teaching destructors in C++ and would like to give the students an interesting homework exercise that requires them to build a class with destructor. In previous years, the homework were something like "write a linked list, but do not use the classes in the STL". I do not like this - I tell...

12:18 PM
Answered twice before it appears here. Some of us are awake and ready to pounce. Lookin' at you @BenI.

Now three times.

12:40 PM
Busy beaver, you.
@BenI. which day is best for questions seeking HNQ status? Look at this: cseducators.meta.stackexchange.com/a/383/1293

The k question is still on the HNQ list, but it's no longer causing a lot of activity. It's mostly just slowing other questions from arriving on the list :P

To get to HNQ we need quick activity from regulars to draw in the visitors.

The easiest times to achieve HNQ status are presumably weekday mornings from 8-11am (east coast) at moments when there are no other active HNQs form our site.

I think visitors would pounce on such a question, but I'm not sure about regulars. It hasn't seen traction here yet.
But is Friday good or bad?
I can let it sit and stew a bit, of course.

It's still first thing in the morning somewhere at work in the US, there is a full workday ahead to keep traction going, and there are no headwinds from other HNQs
Oh, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are the highest traffic days on the SE network broadly speaking
Friday and Monday are both still good, but not as good.

12:49 PM
I'll leave it for next week. Maybe I'll get some feedback here first.

@Buffy Are my answers to Erel's question salvageable, or should I just delete them?

I think the answers are sound. I didn't evaluate the conway answer in detail though.
The OP seems a bit confused about C++ also, from some of the comments.

2:19 PM
@BenI. Up to some discussion on frame challenges?

2:41 PM
@GypsySpellweaver I swear I'm not avoiding you or this discussion. Things just got extremely busy again :(
I'm not one to ignore CSE issues in general. I hope folks here know that :(

Live is a priority
It is for me anyway.

Q: Usefullness of Study Guide

ClémentThe notion of "Study Guide" was unknown to me before moving to the US (I don't think I was ever given one during my studies in France). I believe that the goal of a study guide is three-fold: To list all the topic that will be on the exam, To provide some hints to the students as to how to rev...

4:04 PM
I wish I had more time to clean up my answers. It's just write, one quick edit, and run on busy days.

4:24 PM
@BenI. maybe that's one reason I have so few answers. By the time I actually finish mine there's one better already.
I'm a bit slow translating into English.

4:44 PM
@GypsySpellweaver Translating from Kentucky?

I'll probably never learn "Kentucky" worse than a conlang.
My thoughts tend to be symbols and relationship diagrans, writing serves as a poor substitute
BTW I'm on the move, hopping from hotspot to hotspot. Delays are inevitable.

5:22 PM
@BenI. can you delete my duplicate (and deleted) post for the study guide question. I hit post twice.

Looks like I'll get to keep WiFi for an hour. Yeha

5:38 PM
@GypsySpellweaver So, what is your preferred language?

Perl
For interhuman communications I'll stick with English though.

6:10 PM
@GypsySpellweaver So, this was translating perl to English, then?

No.
Translating thoughts to English.

6:25 PM
@Buffy It looks like you already did it
Off to a meeting!

6:44 PM
4 questions today!!

Q: Should I Provide Answers To Exercises?

Onorio CatenacciI'm preparing some exercises to introduce software developers who have no experience with Scheme to the language. Part of the exercises are simple things like: Create a function that squares a number passed to it I've been sort of debating whether or not I should include answers to the exercise...

7:15 PM
Well, 3, really.

1 hour later…
8:27 PM
Got to say "grok", again.
Study Guide Q is HNQ
KillerByte is still hanging on.

Glad that I ken grok.

8:44 PM
and, I suppose you grok ken

8:56 PM
That'd be redundant, or is that tail recursion?

Life is wheel.

May you never thirst.
I could say that I ken grok, as I can ken that grok is kin to ken. :D
Is it possible to have tail recursion with circular logic? Or is that just Jörmungandr?

yes

2 hours later…
10:39 PM
Barbie groks Ken.

10:53 PM
@GypsySpellweaver Hmmm. Now where did I leave the Sambuca?

Hopefully where the youngsters can't get it. They might think it was just licorice juice. Till the morning.

11:53 PM
Actually, the "youngsters" here are late 40's to around 50, so I need a special hidey hole
