12:29 AM
Slow day on our SE

12:49 AM
Thanks, gypsy!

1:01 AM
@BenI. Welcome, I think. What for?

1:15 AM
Doing an activity on the site :)

1:25 AM
Well, in my view, that's what "committing" to it means. And not just whatever SE considers meeting the commitment, but doing what I can to make it work.

Me, too. I have been so brain-dead this weekend from a lack of sleep I can barely put two coherent sentences together, let alone formulate a strong CSE question

Watch some entertaining YouTube videos instead. Or catch some nice TV shows.
The Good Witch is half-over, but there should be something.

Yeah, that's what I've been reminding myself. We're in a tough spot, but we're not disappearing tomorrow, so if it takes me a few days to recover, I can still contribute.
Besides, I created a strong letter yesterday for the CSTA folks in my state that I sent out (with your guy's sharp editing), and I did bits and pieces here and there throughout the weekend, so it's not like I've done nothing. Just not up to the standard I'd prefer

@BenI. I think you're the last person who I'd call an underachiever on this site.

1:42 AM
We'll make this work

I'm confident we can make it. I think we have 60 new users since Roberts announcement? And many of them have asked/answered.
Plus Peter is still promoting us on twitter and you've (and still are?) sending emails and everyone is participating.

I'm gonna hit the sack, I think. Have a great night, everyone!

Q: Voting on questions

Gypsy SpellweaverI have noticed that we have a few questions with more answers than up votes. Seems to me that if the question is good enough to take the time to write an answer, that it's probably also good enough to earn an up vote along with your answer. While having good questions in beta, especially privat...

I ended up reviewing the same question more than one time.
Well two times.
@GypsySpellweaver Are you in?

How are you?

kewl
I had to review that same one myself. "Keep closed"
Reviewing my options for a super low-budget build with odd specs for development not gaming.

8:06 AM
So I am getting a new charger today hopefully.

that's a good thing

Yes because as you many know..

Which is newer, AMD FM2+ sockets or AMD AM3+ sockets?

@GypsySpellweaver Do you have any reviews about the site?

@thesecretmaster None?

Q: Accepting Nominations -- Who should moderate this site?

Robert CartainoIdeally Moderators are elected by the community, but until the community is large enough to hold a proper election, we will be appointing three provisional Moderators to fill those roles. We need your help. Please nominate folks you would like to see become provisional moderators for this site. ...

A good sign, it seems

3:29 PM
@Aurora0001 I like it, that does indeed look promising :D

I am going to nominate @Aurora0001
Not really

3:51 PM
@Aurora0001 That post means one thing:
CONGRATS guys! :) You are moving on to public beta soon.
2
We have a lot of pinned messages here don't we?

Great news!
Cheers to all of you for great work promoting the site

@BenI. Mind if I nominate you?

No-one minds if I unpin the community ads message in here, do they? They've already been approved.

May I?
@Aurora0001 I want something to do.
@thesecretmaster But I was

Q: The Real Essential Questions of Every Beta

asheeshrThe blog post Seven Essential Meta Questions of Every Beta gets linked to prominently from every beta's meta. However, this blog post is somewhat inaccurate and misdirects new users. In almost every beta, the site design question, for example, gets asked and undergoes a fair bit of discussion eve...

Can I unpin that one?

@Aurora0001 I don't mind

3:58 PM
He already did.
Secret: Sometimes I wish I was a mod. ;)
Been that way for a long time.
I say that to see people's reaction also. ;)

Q: How We Use Twitter

PeterAs some of you may be aware, we started a Twitter account to promote the site this past weekend: @cs_educators. I am currently managing it, but I would love your input on how we use it: I want it to be a collaborative effort. Up until now, I have tweeted in general to some hashtags -- #apcsp, #a...

Just curious, who here actually wants to be a pro tem mod?

@HenryWHHackv2.0 Besides you ;)

I am interested
I'm sure Ben would be as well

4:15 PM
I'm pretty sure you and ben will be mods, but I'm not sure who #3 will be. I'd like to be #3, but I don't know who else does.

Why can I look at the history of deleted messages?
Did I accidentally became a mod?

Your a RO

Oh
@thesecretmaster I never knew ROs can do that.

I wouldn't mind... But I'm not sure how good of a job I'll do. Doesn't mean I won't be posting questions and answers when I can ;)

4:32 PM
@thesecretmaster Feel free

i think I'll nominate myself... Nervous shuffling. Do you guys think I'd be a good mod? I'm really unsure about it...

If you think you can do it, go for it! Why not?

I haven't been active in the site's early days (while it was still in a51)
Does that matter much?

I think all that it takes to be a good mod is to be willing to put in the time

I'm more than willing
So the nomination is just copying the text in the quote in the end of Robert's post and then edit the line in the end?

4:40 PM
It looks like it, yes
I'm reading about "A Theory of Moderation" to see if I think I would be able to do a good job

I nominated you @BenI.
I think I'll self nominate as well if nobody nominates me as I'm fairly sure nobody will.

@BenI. (cc @thesecretmaster) Up voted that nomination.

Likewise

4:56 PM
I think I'd be a good mod. I've done a lot of review on SO and here, put a ton of time in, know the SE protocols, am active on meta and care about the site.

Likewise
I agree that @BenI. Is very likely to make a great Pro Tem Moderator, as well as @Peter. (In my opinion)

Thank you - I'd be honored to do it

@peter you've been nominated too.

Just saw that. Thanks.

Funnily enough, I was interested in designing the logo a while ago, so I asked how that works in a post in a51. Now I know how.

5:05 PM
Yeah, the site design will be the same until graduation (usually when you hit 10 questions/day, consistently)
But you can always modify that userscript I made if you want in the meantime

@ItamarGreen There's a lot we can design for the site. The banner at the top, the logo (in sizes to include the favicon), the up/down vote arrows, the favorites "star", even how the vote/answer and accepted answer are shown on the listing pages.

Really? I'll get to it. I have some wacky (yet educational) ideas

I was just browsing all the graduated SE sites to see how many different things they've been allowed to modify.

Well, it's up to the designers generally; they tend to do the bulk of the changes
I think the more recent designs have more changes than the older sites
e.g. Worldbuilding's design was probably one of the best ones that SE made

Pay attention to the [StackOverflow](stackoverflow.com) site. The top bar there is supposed to be the new model for most sites.

5:09 PM
The Code Golf users made a userscript to change their design while waiting for a custom design

The nice thing about a userscript version is that we can "preview" changes before they get made, and find the one we really like. Then pass that on to the developers. And most of the work will already be done for them too :)

Agreed

5:41 PM
Oddly silent in here

I just leave it open in the background while I'm working, so I can stay in the loop

5:59 PM
Hey everyone! I just self nominated. If you think I'd be a good mod, have a look.

I think you'd make a great mod

@thesecretmaster I was just about to ask if you were planning to nominate yourself. Good luck!

6:26 PM
Thanks! Are you going to self nominate? You clearly have experiance.

in Chat of Things, 3 hours ago, by Aurora0001
@HenryWHHackv2.0 No, I don't think so. IoT keeps me busy enough, and I think there are plenty of candidates over there who are much more qualified for the job than I would be
If you want to get a preview on being a moderator:

Q: What does the site look like to a moderator?

Amith KKThe site has special features for moderators. Can I see how the site looks like to the average moderator(tools and stuff)

@thesecretmaster No, I don't think so (@HenryWHHackv2.0 has already quoted me :P)
The UI is largely the same now

When you are a mod you will have richest, money, power, cool cars and girls
Not really.

'recalc rep' is gone now, but other than that, it's very similar

6:39 PM
it'd be pointless to allow recalcs now anyway; your reputation is always up-to-date in real time now

Yes
@Aurora0001 Not really the case for the Area51.SE meta though.

Area 51 is a creaky, old, broken site that should be replaced
Area 52 was supposed to come years ago, apparently

Area52?
Never heard of it.

7:14 PM
Also, @Peter and @BenI., don't forget to accept your nominations by editing

7:37 PM
Yeah, I've been hesitating a little :/ but I will do it once class ends

Texting in class!?!?
I wonder who else will get nominated

7:58 PM
It's band (dress rehearsal!) and I have student conductors, so they're on right now.

Thanks for the reminder, @Aurora0001. Will do now.

@BenI. I think it's kinda funny that your nomination got the same score as the nomination question (-me)

8:18 PM
I am very flattered!
Probably too flattered - my head will inflate too much. Luckily, I've married someone who will be armed and ready to go with pins whenever necessary ;-)

haha

When do nominations end?

I'd guess in about a week, or whenever we get promoted to public beta?

9:14 PM
@BenI. Today I had to walk in on an orchestra rehearsal to make the lights work. Our system is sooo old, everything is breaking, but we can't get money so I guess we wait until it is totally broken?

LOL

Do you guys have funding in New Jersey?
Our lighting system is from the 1960s from some quick googling. The manufacturer went out of business in the 1990s.
Anyone think the Overlords will be upset with me if I change my flair theme in my self-nomination?
Also, if you wish to be amused, look at the revision history on our area51 proposal description

9:45 PM
@thesecretmaster I doubt they will care, after all the themes are built in to the system anyway.

I know, but maybe they'll look down upon me and smite me...
I feel like the hotdog theme is a smidge to bright

If you made your own flair, maybe, though probably not even then. Using theirs, I just don't see it happening. Worst that could happen is the CM does a rollback
I do wish there was something a bit less in your face than the hotdog

10:01 PM
All I use my flair for is to create a control panel type page where I can get to any of my accounts, main and meta, without going through a bunch of clicks and menus.
@thesecretmaster Looks fine to me.
Glad you added the network flair. Seems to fit in well.

10:20 PM
@GypsySpellweaver Just curious, what's the origin of your name? When I first heard it, I thought of Gypsy Rose Lee, but I'd like to know the actual origin.

Pseudonym not name . Gypsy, I've been known to move around a lot - though hope that's come to an end. Spellweaver, I'm active in web tech a lot lately, hence "weaver", and since most other words I liked weren't available in all the corners of the web where I wanted to use it, so "spell" was the choice. Hopefully I can do some magic on the web :D
