I think if you plotted openness of countries' government (maybe through the EIU index jpatokal linked to) against the overall visa burden they impose on people trying to enter, there would be a relationship

There is a correlation between a lot of things

@jpatokal and the like, white people in general, are unfair.. they love to say whatever about other countries, and if u talk about them, you are a terrorist. of course, I flagged the answer, but it's declined, but when I say "Egyptian accent pronounces G wrongly", people attack me because i said an "accent" is wrong.. fuck this shit man. white people and their non fucking sense..
just unfair..

could we maybe, especially when complaining about stereotyping and generalizing entire countries or races, not make our complaints about "white people" in general?

8:04 AM
@ZachLipton could we maybe, especially when complaining about VISAS, not generalize a whole country? and I will be thankful.

9:02 AM
@RoflcoptrException Yo man. I have been pretending to be busy. :D

To change the subject, is this guy getting scammed?

Q: My girlfriend wants to fly from LA to St. Louis. Can she do that with just a visa?

BachtovenMy girlfriend has a visa. It doesn't expire for 4 more months. I told her to get an ID but she never did so all she has is her visa. She's not a citizen of the US but she lives here. She pays about 500 dollars every few years to obtain a US government issued visa which allows her to be employed...

Wow, that question is a lot more detailed now since I read it the last time

unrelated, love the OP's name

Scammed by who @phoog ?
It seems there is either something very wrong with her stay in the US though. Or he just has no idea about her actual visa situation
If he buys a ticket it is harder to get scammed. The usual scam is "Send me money for a ticket"

12:44 PM
If they decide not to fly. An option is gift tickets with greyhound though since they can be retrived by the other person using only a password. (As suggested on here a few weeks ago)

@CMaster seriously man, you think his answer is facts and not opinions?

No
that's not what I said at all

his answer is more like accusations to me..

fine, say that, report it, downvote it

stealing women? dangerous infidels? seriously..
i reported it..

12:49 PM
don't just delete the one example that you're unhappy with

but let's face it, it is against arabs, lol.. i will never win this argument :)

also, I'm pretty sure "dangeous infidels" is exactly the reason that one can't get a tourist visa for Saudi

@CMaster what's the link to it?

now i didnt delete saudi,
I deleted the accusations..
so, i hope it makes sense to you..

@NeanDerThal what's wrong dude? You have been ragging it all week

12:50 PM
I left saudi arabia, since he changed it to regime..
its a new issue..
since last night or something..

(well, it's that tourists are seen to engnage in improper activities)
26
A: Why do many countries in the world still require citizens of states with a high HDI to get visas?

jpatokalAs a rule of thumb, the worse the visa regime, the worse the country's regime. It's the tinpot dictatorships of the world (Turkmenistan, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Angola, etc) that make it the hardest to get visas and watch visitors most closely, and in the case of the United States, suffering ...

@CMaster note, i left saudi, i removed the accusations.. i hope you approve.

I have to be honest dude, I think you're taking this personally and the reaction was disproportionate to what he said
yes the answer isn't helpful, it's generalized and inaccurate
yes westerners love to criticize other countries
but name calling isn't cool man

I wouldnt accept an accusation against any country..
he removed saudi "country" and make it "regime" thats fine.
then, he added stuff that can only the people do.. like "stealing women"..
makes no sense, an accusation..
i am sorry if i called names. i apologize..
i am out of this argument..
have a good day.

Oi Nean Der Thal, you're being a complete dickhead with edits like this:

12:53 PM
@NeanDerThal There's a good fellow

The UK and Saudi legal systems are currently arguing about a woman as it happens

Seriously, people get banned for shit like this. Please revert.

not sure what the situation with that one was

chill and let's chat

geez, guess we really aren't all adults here

12:54 PM
sigh.

@jpatokal ok, i am dick for making the edit..
but accusing as you go.. what do you call that?
makes no sense man.. at least make good accusations.. not based on some CNN reports controlled by some feminine movement or something..

accusing who? what?

not that I do not respect that.. but come on..
man, i always respected u. I really did..

@NeanDerThal steady on. You know what happens when you start to rage

dude, economist intelligence unit: eiu.com/home.aspx

12:55 PM
anyway, not a good idea to engage in this argument.. i am losing :)
@jpatokal dude, one source? its not a fact.. and it is irrelevant.

pretty f'ing far from a "CNN report controlled by some feminine movement" :P

@NeanDerThal Steady on old mate

bye :)

@jpatokal come along lads

anyway, one thing you're missing is that i'm actually not involved in this edit war...
you're digging your own hole here.

12:57 PM
@jpatokal I have to say a reference would have helped, if you wanted to make a point there

@blackbird Reference for what?

steal their military secrets, report on human rights issues, lead the faithful astray, steal their women
we know they don't like journalists, ok

@blackbird steady on

so, um, as i hope you realized the whole answer is ever so slightly exaggerated for comedic effect...

anw I'm not trying to defend anyone's position, just trying to calm it down

12:59 PM
so what's i'm trying to say is that there are countries {a,b,c,d} that are afraid tourists are actually {e,f,g,h} who want to {i,j,k,l}.
as in, some but not all will apply to any specific country. is that not obvious enough? how do i spell that out more clearly?

@jpatokal Seriously man there's no need for that.

I take no offence with that, I'm trying to make him see what you're trying to say, and hope you see how he took it

@JoErNanO Steady on old sport

Please all stop arguing. You took this to Meta. It's being discussed. That's the way to solve controversies.

I wanted to talk to you on the phone by the way

1:01 PM
@GayotFow To me? :)

@JoErNanO No, the other JoerNando :)

@GayotFow Is that a gerundiefied version of my nickname? Cool.
Carthago joernando est.

@JoErNanO JeErNanO, camel casing dude

:)

Are you burning the camel at both ends?

1:10 PM
I tried but he starts running away panicking once I light his tail.
I wonder why.

Curse the darkness?

Or darken the curse.

Sir when you are ready I will explain my idea to you
Also I am thinking about asking a question about NYC

@GayotFow didn't know you were born in the USA ! cool

@blackbird yes, I'm very American, born in Brooklyn
Vietnam era vet, US Navy

1:20 PM
woah
guess I'll be more confused by your American english spelling now
just kidding :p
so what's the Russian and UK connections then ?

So I had the very distinct pleasure of voting for Brexit here and for Trump there by absentee ballot
Yeah I have those too
Coverage for 20 time zones :)

haha the sun never sets in your time then :p

@blackbird try it! You can have an interesting life

I cover a mere 6 time zones :p

@blackbird That's fine too!
Did you count alaska and oahu?

1:34 PM
I'm in Canada :p

eh?

haha

My parents were originally Quebecois

damn ! more cool stuff about Gayot today
tu parles français ?

yes, it gave me a leg up with french, definitely.
When I get the tape mounted I can conceal my origin, but that's after a while and I get rolling
So I have a question about NYC

1:41 PM
shoot

I was going to ask how to get from 7th Ave to 5th Ave walking underground. Do you think it's a great question?

I'll probably question why anyone wants to walk and suggest you take an uber instead :p
I think it's interesting, I'd be curious to know

@chx Damn!

chx
It's not like it's the first google result googling those exact words.
:)
now i know shopping questions are looked down
but
in the AC adapter thread I posted i.stack.imgur.com/AIxzX.jpg this image I found

1:53 PM
OK, I see where he's going once he got to 6th Ave

chx
and I am really curious where to buy one
i mailed wonpro but no answer (yet?)

I bet he comes up at 53rd street!
@chx yeah, he comes up on 5th & 53rd street
Can I change it to 8th Avenue?
I know that starting from Port Authority you can get to 7th Ave, but then you have to come up and go uptown to Radio City to go back down again

chx
it's not Toronto where you have an entire downtown underground

@chx Toronto does have its moments

chx
It's Canada, obviously better than the USA :D
Canada: like the USA, just better.

2:07 PM
@chx I have huge family branches in Kingston, Montreal, and Toronto. Bikers and rednecks and proud of it.

hahaha i'm not sure how much we're like the US but ok :p

@blackbird bring me back a carton of luckies eh

haha you don't have them in the US ?

chx
well

good commercial, eh?

chx
2:18 PM
we are planning to build a wall
much as the US does

Yeah, but Trump is going down the tubes.

chx
so yeah: America but better :D
I love that video.

Beer - wise I would go for Germany

or Belgium

chx
I don't drink :(

2:28 PM
Belgium!

Well, I'll go cook breakfast, and think about Molson's, Moose Head and the like versus dunkles hefeweizen

you need to try a Maudite, or Fin du Monde

@GayotFow from any point on 7th Ave to any point on 5th Ave? Can there be two walks separated by a subway ride?
@GayotFow if you like Belgian beer but yearn for a patriotic choice you can try Unibroue's La Fin du Monde.
Most of their beers, if not all, are Belgian style, but Quebecois.

2:44 PM
I hear you can even get a tour of the breweries in Chambly (I think)

3:15 PM
@phoog preferably midtown. But there's a video of somebody doing exactly that, I don't know where he descended, but he came up on 5th Ave. So now I'm wondering where he descended, and also if it's possible from 8th Ave, like Port Authority

3:28 PM
I remember being able to cross a couple of streets in midtown using a subway station when I was in NY years ago

got a link to the video?

chx
"What's the largest difference between avenue numbers you can walk underground in NYC" that'd be a great question.

or are you saving it for your question?

Looks like there should be enough clues there

3:35 PM
@Berwyn Yeah! It spoils my question.
I wish I knew where he descended
I loved my daily walk underground, especially in the winter.
Once on a weekend I was under 6th ave at a coffee shop with my daughter and Mark Hamill was there.
Anyway, there's got to be a bell ringer of a question about underground walking in NYC
There's a row of atriums west of lex that goes for about 4 or 5 streets, so you're always under an atrium

Yeah, should be an interesting question or two there

I heard an unconfirmed rumour that you could get from columbus circle to the JC Penny building underground, but I'm really doubtful

"I think we can rule out the possibility that OPs girlfriend is the Queen of England, but the other options seem possible."

where's the +1 funny for comments?
Flew into JFK yesterday on an ESTA. CBP guy wasn't happy. Said I had to use my E2
then he pointed to one of my 50 entry stamps and said how long were you here for this one?
I laughed
He went off to get a second opinion and reluctantly let me in

chx
3:50 PM
LOL where's the link?

Realised later on that I'd been stamped in on visa waiver for that one he pointed at without having had an ESTA at the time and actually entered on E2

BachtovenMy girlfriend has a visa. It doesn't expire for 4 more months. I told her to get an ID but she never did so all she has is her visa. She's not a citizen of the US but she lives here. in there somewhere

@chx Nobody upvotes my comments. It bugs me some times

you have 3 comments at +20
Doesn't look like a bad haul...

someone had a query for a comment score leaderboard
Apparently my highest scoring comment is 69

chx
4:05 PM
I wonder what are my comments upvoted this high

It's a source of mild concern, especially when I give the OP's answer outright.

@phoog my phone made me do it hahahah
2
that taiwan visa Q is really teasing me with the bounty :p

@blackbird ok it might have been more accurate to say "my phone did it and I didn't notice in time to correct it."

no I love it :p

"More accurate" isn't always "better."

chx
5:14 PM
Seriously? my highest voted comment is travel.stackexchange.com/questions/59848/… this?
you people :P

5:27 PM
unsurprisingly, many of the top comments involve posts with "we're all adults here" in the title

6:07 PM
@NeanDerThal You smiley isn't really visible from the sidebar, you may get flags from people who see the f word on their sidebar without the smiley

For even more confusion : When you mousover it it says : Asked 6 non-wiki questions with a total score of 46. Gave 70 non-wiki answers with a total score of 398. Which only adds up to 76

@GayotFow I'm guessing (without having watched the whole video) that the 5th-avenue ascent is from Rockefeller Center. I don't think there's any way to get to 7th Ave underground from Rockefeller Center, but I'm not entirely sure.
Also, many of these underground passages are open only during weekdays. I'm mostly around there in the evenings and weekends.

@Berwyn Thanks for liking my Queen of England comment :)
@NeanDerThal LOL is that the usual banter in here? haha

8:17 PM
@phoog The video claims to begin at 7th ave, but I can't think of where

I think you can start at the Rockefeller Center concourse and end up at the subway on 7th and 49th
at least during weekdays
untappedcities.com/2015/10/05/… has some references to it
that claims you used to be able to get to grand central, but no more

@ZachLipton The 7th and 49th N-Q-R station? That's news to me. I'll have to look into it. I used to use that station frequently when I lived in Astoria.

allegedly. I wandered around down there once but it was at least five years ago

it does say "just short of" 7th Avenue so I guess it doesn't connect underground to the station.

I know you can walk long distances between underground/metro stations in London and Paris, but as far as I know not these kind of distances. And in Toronto even more? Missed all that when I was there last.

8:35 PM
you can get from the NQR at 49th into the Barclays building. If you can get from the Barclays building into the Time-Life building, then you're set. I think that's what the guy does in the video above somehow?
I'm not sure it connects into the station. The question is where the starting point is

idk about Toronto but we have a large underground city here in Montreal

I have seen videos about snow clearance in Quebec, (in winter of course) and I can understand why you have underground connections/city. (Not sure which city, chat friend.)
I missed the one in Montreal as well, different journey, same friend as travel companion. He is not one to explore those kind of things.
I will need a lot of rep, soon. I just crossed the 13K line and I do not like the number 13.

I kind of want to go to New York now to poke around the Rockefeller Center concourse system
