Q: Raw grains through security

TraveltheglobeHelp Help. I am studying abroad and trying to save money by taking food from home (the US) and not having to buy EVERYTHING once I get there. I have packed ziplock sandwhich bags of raw brown basmati rice and ziplocks of protein powder. Will they freak out at the TSA checkpoints?

am I missing something here? does it really make sense to buy your rice in the US and take it somewhere?

5 hours later…
4:47 AM
that's the second question tonight where I'm scratching my head at the premise

3 hours later…
8:00 AM
@ZachLipton My strong suspicion is that it's not a case of buying it in the US to take with them
but taking it from their parent's home

sure, and I get the protein powder, but if a few dollars worth of rice is so material to your financial situation that it's worth it for you to carry it, you probably can't afford to study abroad

also, are spammers fair game for mocking? travel.stackexchange.com/questions/76864/…

I like to think so, they tried to ask the same question on SO too
that's way worse than google translate

I mean, this is kinda funny: "Our dream We can become people a friend who is share with your happiness and sorrow."

I do experience both happiness and sorrow reading that, but unfortunately it is at their expense

IMHO thinly veiled spam: travel.stackexchange.com/a/76865/22140

@JoErNanO he hasn't mentioned a company?

@MarkMayo His profile does.
> I am Dorian Duran owner of TicoRide, a travel planning company in Costa Rica. Here we provide private and shared transfer and transportation services in Costa Rica.

Sure, but there's no law against that
and he is pointing out an answer. It's an awfully written answer, IMHO, but it is directed at the OP.

Yeah, the way it's written is like a travel agent
"kindly consider" etc
but there's no particular attempt to sell their own company

True. There's no law against that. However the is user is saying "the bus answer is wrong, use private transport services". Then one clicks on their profile and sees that they offer private transport services. Looks like thinly veiled spam to me.

9:36 AM
Wow, the edit war meta post has had 142 views
in under a day

@MarkMayo Is there a way we could link to the meta post, rather than to the whole meta site, from the informational popup on the original question?

I did in the comments on the controversial answer
but the locked comment is site driven, I don't control the text

@MarkMayo Ach. I thought you had superhuman powers. :P

I also hoped so after visiting Chernobyl, but alas :P

I'm disappointed.

10:36 AM
@MarkMayo Superhuman powers only comes from visiting a nuclear site shortly after the accident.. So your best bet would have been Fukushima

10:49 AM
nah, Chernobyl would have been fine, Mark just didn't grab enough Artifacts

Boom
glaring at @JoEr

@ShadowWizard Badaboom cha cha!
Miss me, huh? @ShadowWizard

Greatly, @Joe
Even though bot is back to Den, something was still missing.... :D

@ShadowWizard Hey hey I'm in the Den. I just pretend to be too busy for SE.

@JoErNanO using the room to sleep 24/7 doesn't count :P
I'll start charging rent, @Joe ;)

@ShadowWizard You're a true businessman.

Eh, if you want superpowers there's plenty of radiation left in Chernobyl
Visit the Elephant's foot for an hour, you either die within the day or become the Hulk.

@GayotFow (and other double+ citizens) - is it better to have one's second citizenship with the same name as the first one?
or better to have one in a slightly different version?
I can see a pro of having slightly different names for stuff like making visa-runs easier
and other visa-related schenanigans

I can see difficulties with tickets booked on one name/passport and using the other passport for (part of) the travel

depends where you want to live too, I can tell you my gf went through lengthy legal procedures to get all her documents with the same last name everywhere
because it was just too confusing/annoying for travel and living documents etc

My niece is double nationality from birth, the Netherlands + Slovakia, in her Slovak passport they put a female ending on her family name, as usual in Slovakia. Both being Schengen and the Netherlands being pretty good for esta and other visa free entry, she has never had to use her other passport. But I bet that Dutch passport people and airline crew would be confused if she used her Slovak passport.

6:31 PM
@JonathanReez I'm a guy who plays everything strictly by the book; so same name for everything, the sole exception is when it has to be spelled in cyrillic. And even then I argued with them.

7:24 PM
@chx Where would such an adventure fit in on this map?

chx
@Fiksdal 1-2 yellow little cubes. you are dead if you get close to that thing, in short.

3 answers now, 2 non-A really

chx
@Fiksdal it has mellowed a lot because these days you can spend a few minutes next to it and have a chance to survive. if i rmeember correctly now it takes an hour to be guaranteed to be dead within a day.
@Fiksdal a few days after Chernobyl, you spent a minute in the same chamber and you had a few weeks, tops.
@Fiksdal so now it's really not dangerous :P
@Fiksdal the Soviets in their infinite wisdom sent people to take samples!

@chx Wow.... Yeah, that's pretty far down on my list of proposed holiday destinations...

chx
I can't understand what makes people visit the area
I am scared of radiation, sorry.

7:50 PM
radiation is scary

@chx Me neither, I wouldn't go within several hundred km of the site

chx
me neither!

i feel barely reassured when I go for a dental xray and the technician hides in the other room with their vest :p

chx
i got my own dose from Chernobyl as I grew up in Budapest and we were all irradiated to a small extent

i don't care if someone's written what's safe or wharever.. I'll err on the side of extreme caution.
@chx Yeah, most of Europe felt it, I think? We got a fair amount of radioactive rain over Norway

@chx Wow... that really sucks...

chx
well it seems it's not a lot compared to the background anyways

In one way I'm grateful for the new huge nuclear reactor that's powering my area (there used to be outages 50% of the time before it came).. On the other hand, nuclear power scares me.
@chx oh ok

My sister in law was in Slovakia, Czechoslovakia those days of course, and they celebrated the First of May ceremonies before they were told that a week before Chernobyl had happened.

I probably wouldn't work in a nuclear site even if everyone assured me it was safe an offered me a million USD a year

7:57 PM
some can't afford not to though
especially if you worked in the USSR, not sure how much of a choice you had :p

chx
but this doesn't seem to count for the radioactive iodine accumulated in thyroid glands

@Willeke Yeah, the Soviet Union tried to keep the accident a secret IIRC

chx
which was a sin because if people would've gotten iodine hours after the explosion that would've helped

we're lucky where I live to have enough water not to need nuclear power

It was not kept secret, the western world knew all about it before 1-5, it was just that the ceremonies were considered more important.

7:59 PM
@blackbird Haha, yeah in the SU maybe you were just assigned a job and that was it. And they probably didn't tell people how dangerous it was either.

The most dangerous about those tours to see the Chernobyl is that there are guides who go in many times, to earn a living.

@Willeke I didn't mean secret in that sense, I meant that the media didn't report in the Soviet Union itself didn't report widely on it, or tried to downplay it to the Soviet public
@Willeke Wow, that sounds messed up

Either they got too much radiation already and now consider it worth going to earn a living, or if not yet ill, they may think they will not get it.

@chx there's a Q about tipping in Hungary, maybe you could help ?
12
Q: How to tip in Hungary/Budapest?

oriqueIn a few weeks we'll be at Budapest for our holidays. We'll try to avoid tourist traps and we will pay in cash. In order to avoid more friction than that generated by the obvious language barrier, one thing I'd like to know before arriving is how tipping is done (if at all) by locals, specially ...

Thats what I said, first of May parade was more important.

8:02 PM
@Willeke Right, yes.
Secret is not the right word.

there's a whole controversy in France because the authorities told people there was nothing to be feared, even when nearby countries were already affected and taking adequate measures
I think it even led to some conviction on neglect of public health or something

Looks like someone is upvoting my content in series, had a three answers and now 5 Q upvoted in a short time, makes me wonder if and how the 'no serial actions' kicks in.
I still wonder if all 'do not eat your vegetables' and 'get all cows under cover' was really needed.
Here, in the Netherlands I mean.

@Willeke Has it often happened here that rep has been adjusted due to serial upvoting?

I never had serial upvoting before, so I can only go by what I remember what was been said.
I do appreciate the votes though.

Probably just someone browsing your profile and reading through your posts

8:06 PM
(I do not remember much, to tell truth)
That is what I tend to do.
First upvoted Q was one that had been active, most or all other content is older.

Reading through another user's posts? I do that sometimes too. But I try to limit my upvotes to only the best ones, to avoid the serial voting system being triggered
Yes, that sounds like someone was browsing your profile

I did not know about serial upvoting blocks when I first started out here, so I might have been guilty on it myself. Now I am more careful.
I think that I have reached the point that you can not get upvotes from me on old content anymore, (all done.) ;-)

IMO it isn't really bad to go through a user's profile and upvote their good posts

guess you'll know tomorrow if those votes are "corrected"

It's just that the system has no way to distinguish it from vote fraud
One guy at Ask Ubuntu tok a 3k to his rep due to that

8:12 PM
a 3k hit ? damn

It's not like it made him low-rep or anything, so i guess not a big deal

For voting fraude? If for fraude, I agree.

He's just a super helpful guy who goes to extra lengths to write custom scripts for people and help them out in all kinds of ways.. he goes the extra mile

For assumed (but unjustified) I do not agree

I was on a research trip so my bounty on the US overstay as a minor, how to tick ESTA form - Q was awarded automatically to @Berwyn in half. A pity for wasting half a bounty but @Berwyn does not need it so badly and it is just IMHO that the bounty goes to him

8:15 PM
My guess is that many users felt thankful to him and went on some voting sprees...

@blackbird Oh, that's sizable
AU is a pretty tight nit community, some people could have simply upvoted a huge amount of his posts because they thought they were good

chx
@Fiksdal have you seen the famous photo where the radiation corrupted the photo?

@chx No, link?

chx
that's a worker on the left....

8:17 PM
Holy S-IT
That is so scary.. I'm afraid of getting cancer simply by looking at that...
lol.. anyway, it's scary at least

I think the multiple image of the worker and the trails of light are mostly due to a slow shutter speed rather than radiation.

chx
what do i know, this picture is purported to be radiation corrupted and it's easy to believe due to the thing on the right
which is the Elephant's foot.

Most discussions I've seen suggest that the graininess is caused by the radiation. The amazing thing is that that guy is still alive, or at least he was 2 years ago when the NY Times interviewed him.

chx
In Soviet Russia....

The trails of light are attributed to a flashlight moving around.
The picture was taken in 1996 (in post-Soviet Ukraine).

chx
8:28 PM
why on earth would anyone approach that thing in 1996??

money?

To monitor it. It's disintegrating.

@phoog Right, but why would anyone consider that worth risking dying a painful death of cancer?

It's now barely warmer than the ambient temperature, so it expands and contracts with changes in the weather.

If you can make enough for the family to survive in an area where there are no jobs and little prospects of improvement

8:29 PM
It's not nearly as dangerous as it was at first.

@phoog It would take more than such an assurance to keep me away
In 1996, certainly

It is not so much danger for people going there one time, it is the guides who go repeatedly.
And he might already be suffering from overdoses of radiation, as is the norm for people who worked in the area.

@Willeke I guess. But sometimes there's more of an emotional fear response than a reasonable look at the maths.

I feel all nuclear power, testing and so on should be banned, but if countries that can not be trusted have it as only people......how can the rest of the world ignore it. But we are creating 'clean' power (no CO2 gasses) now, for dirty (nuclear) waste that will be around for centuries to come. Nice legacy for future generations.

@Willeke Yeah, due do it's scary nature, it wouldn't be too bad banning it
But my house is running on nuclear power as we speak
They just built a huge reactor.. Before that there were power outages all the time and it really sucked.

8:35 PM
We just need to get that energy from other sources. I am waiting for sun collector net curtains.

I hope they've got their routines in order down there...
Yeah, solar could be huge in some areas

I live almost under a natural gas fired energy plant. Or is it still steel factory gas?

That's nicer, tho

My flat has two big windows facing the sun most of the day, I have to have curtains or something, would be great if those would generate power. Technology for that was developed a few years back already, not sure whether it will ever come.
Either curtains or a film to put against the glass, see through for a part.
We have some nuclear power here, but most we use is imported from France and Belgium, as far as I know and I wish I could block it.
They are so concerned getting all coal power plants converted, but nukes, no thanks.

@Willeke Where are you?

8:40 PM
NL, not that far from Amsterdam.

@Willeke What about when it's overcast?

winters are pretty dark in northern Europe too

Still enough light comming through to get a lot of power, if a little less that when it is sunny.
I am not talking replacing the power plant with window energy, but it would help.
And being in a flat, (rental) I can not put it on the roof.

Right

We are not that far north, we still get 6 hours or so of daylight even on the shortest day.
But short days in winter are compensated by long days in summer

8:43 PM
You'll probably save a bit on the electricity bill

If we could get every office with central air also have sun collectors to power the airconditioning, we would safe a lot of energy out of the power system.

you wouldn't believe how much power we waste on heating/conditioning here

At this time they are installing sun collectors on the flat roof at work, makes me wonder how efficient that is going to be.
The Russian system? Heat to full power, open the window if too hot?

hahaha

And switch off before the weather is hot enough so people still freeze in their houses in spring.

8:46 PM
@Willeke In the tropics is where it's really useful though

I have rented a room in a block of flats where there was a central heating system for the whole of the building. I had one of the main pipes in my room, I never had the radiator on, I also had to open the window at times, and that in NL, where power is carfully guarded.

Strong sunlight, rarely overcast

Specially where there is no power net (yet), sun collectors can be put where power is needed, instead of putting loads of leads through nature.

yeah I lived in blocks like that too, except here if you open the window in winter good luck closing it again

@Willeke Only you need batteries too, if you're gonna have power at night.

8:51 PM
Or a mechanical way to store power. In some places they pump up water to a high point when power is plentiful, and use hydro energy when they need loads of power later. Both Luxembourg and the UK use this.

Oh, that's cool

@Fiksdal, when is this pelgrimage you consider joining? weeks from now, sooner, later?

Yeah, some people have this huge weight that get's hoisted up to the ceiling. And then it gradually descends, powering a light on its way down.
tonight :)
I didn't go
But it's every full moon
I was just in town.. massive crowd

No way to harden your feet so soon. But you can go next month or the month after.

I'll probably walk on a day other than full moon, to practice.. That way I can get a taxi home when it becomes too much

8:54 PM
Start walking bare feet in the house, all the time and sandals or toe slippers/flip-flops for a real walk outside, say building up to at least an hour per day.

Then try again a week later, etc. On every trip I should be able to walk longer.
@Willeke Yeah, I already do go barefoot in the house. And nobody wears shoes here, it's all sandals

That is also a way to harden your feet, but be careful the surface of the road/path/track is clean.
So you have some protection already.

@Willeke Yeah, it's sweptregularly by municipal workers.
@Willeke Yeah.
Actually, the locals here have the same philosophy about the actual mountain itself

I have not done it recently, but I used to go bare feet on the allotment (my parents) all summer, sandals or some such rest of the summer.

They actually climb the whole mountain barefoot
what's an allotment?

8:57 PM
I met one girl, one year Christmas holidays in Paris, next in London, and she was bare foot even there, said she only wore shoes in snow, and for that the thinnest possible.
Garden away from home, mostly you find them in groups on the edge of a village or town.
Big enough for have a small hut and fun area, rest for growing vegetables.
I guess in Norway and Sweden people have summer huts out of town, not sure whether those have a garden as well.
Alotment is the UK name.
here we call them 'volkstuin' 'peoples gardens'.

@Willeke Ah, I see.
Wow, barefoot in the winter is crazy

It was around freezing point in the day, both years, some puddles were frozen over in the mornings, and she was really bare foot.
I can not even keep wearing sandals, it works my bladder when my feet get cold.
If I lived in a hot country I would never wear closed shoes, I bet.

@Willeke If you wear closed shoes here you will soon find yourself in the position of a biological weaon

?

Your socks will start to smell so bad that you can use them as a weapon

9:03 PM
:)

Nobody wears closed shoes here
Except for office workers who wear suits and work in offices with AC anyway
Even they take them off when they get on the bus

I bet European ladies living there will still wear high heeled pumps, most silly shoes ever.

@Willeke I'm not sure if I've seen it
Probably in nightclubs in big cities
It's all westernized there.. Especially the young people

I see them on TV all the time, women wearing such high heels, the front of the shoe has to be given a thick sole and they can not really walk. It is possible on the level but they can not take stairs at all.

@Willeke Must be terrible
I guess they wanna be taller

9:07 PM
At work the office girls sometimes wear shoes that are slightly less rediculous, just as high as they can get without the extra bit under the front.
Fashion, that is all it is.
Each new round of high heeled shoes has to be higher than the last.

Must be terrible to walk on

They are. I used to be able to walk in high heeled shoes, but never the pointy ones. (In case you wonder, I am female.)
I grew up in the 70's and 80's when high heels were blocks, not narrow.

@Willeke Didn't know you were

Females seem rare here, funny enough.

example photo?

9:09 PM
No, nearly bedtime, sorry
Should have been in already. Work starts in 8 hours.

Will I find it if I google high heel blocks?

Google pop bands of the 70's and 80's, Kiss, the police, Abba, and such, look at those pictures.
Yes, those are now, and the heels seem a bit wider, so less risky that the worst.

Anyway, yeah. I guess since SE started as a programmer site, there are lots of males here. Anyway, sorry to keep you up while you should be charging your batteries for work

Yes, and those Abba ones are not the worst either. The worst had higher soles all around as well. Very bad for knees, I am told.
Good night

Good night
