Q: Why do Starfleet ships employ cetaceans?

Sovereign InquiryIs there some kind of benefit to using cetaceans (dolphins in this case) for aiding in navigation? Aren't humans more than capable of doing the job? Is there some reason that dolphins are better-suited for this job? Dolphins don't have hands, which would most likely complicate things.

KirtIn S10:E15 of The Walking Dead, "The Calm Before", at around 13 minutes in, the leaders of the soon-to-be Coalition decide to sign the charter originally drawn up by Michonne as part of a mutual defense pact against The Whisperers. The King is the first to sign it (as "King Ezekiel") and then Car...

Q: Where was the Quaritch recombinant "born"?

KidburlaIn Avatar: The Way of Water, we see the Quaritch recombinant waking up in a lab somewhere for the first time. Shortly afterwards, he is in a transport craft and says "we're on our way to Pandora", implying that they weren't on Pandora before. The vehicle they are in looks like the ones which tran...

@Randal'Thor Sorry to bother you on an unrelated room, but if you're going to delete messages then I'd appreciate deleting the one that started it too. The comment I replied to is offensive. That's why I replied at all. I and the millions of people he painted as evil don't appreciate it and shouldn't have to just take it.

Q: time manipulation provides immortality?

riggedif time manipulation is possible (traveling into the past) then wouldn't immortality be guaranteed? based on our current understanding of our universe, time is infinite, so at some point someone/thing will travel back in time and download our conscious.

@22286 I did check that message to see if it should be deleted too, but couldn't find anything really inappropriate in it. It doesn't say any view or group is "evil", and it doesn't equate "Christian values" with that other list of views: it just says that some people in the US do.
That said, feel free to flag a message that you find offensive; maybe another mod or bunch of 10k users will take a different view.

JontiaIn Drew Hayes Super Powereds, year 3 the HCP is attacked and the teachers resume their hero personas in order to fight off the attack. Q: 1950s-ish novels with spacecraft drives that are concentric rings

Christopher WeuveLooking for author name for short novels (at least two in series) where spacecraft engines are concentric rings (some sort of reactionless drive?) that gave off a glow when operating. In one book there is a small ship going to the moon to rescue stranded astonauts. The rescue ship gets there fast...

Q: Tessering by what means in 'Wrinkle'?

2540625In Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, did Mr. Murry (Meg's father) use a device, a body motion, or only his mind to tesser? Did the non-earthlings tesser by the same means? Is such a detail given? I'm not asking about the bug-on-fabric analogy. I haven't read the story in decades, and I can't...

I guess the posts that appear in the chat feed are copies of the posts and not just links. I edited a title in the actual post but it didn't change here.
Maybe snapshot images, but that would be more data, not less.

Q: In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, how did the Americans know where to search for the vibranium?

Alex319In a scene in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the Americans were on an offshore platform, using the underwater vibranium detector to search for vibranium. It is my understanding that: (1) They only had the one vibranium detector, built by Riri Williams, and had no way of building more, (2) The de...

Q: Orc calls elves "filth?"

releseabeThe orcs insult disparage elves but they use terms that seem too human -- is something being filth that big a deal to an orc? So are we getting only an imprecise translation of what orcs say often, perhaps only conveying sentiment without the real meaning? I think other species similarly refer to...

Q: Did the Star Trek TNG font originate in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom?

DrSheldonI was watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), and the font in the opening credits looked remarkably familiar: Is that the font of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)? Or at least designed by the same artist? For what it is worth, both were released by Paramount. Related questi...
