Q: Movie where a girlfriend is abducted by a demon and loses her memory

arose820I'm trying to remember a movie I watched around 2013-2014. In the beginning there is a young couple about to have sex in an old building (church?), and there is a very disturbing scene where she is stolen away by a demon/evil spirit creature. The man then searches for her. Much later, he finds he...

Q: Could it ever make sense to use megahertz as a unit of energy?

nuggetheadI'm reading Nnedi Okorafor's book "Noor." In it, the author describes a character who has invented a way to transmit energy through the air using some kind of light wave. OK, I get it, it's sci-fi, I can go along with that. But then this character compared how much of the energy she sent with ...

Q: What is the name of this fantasy book?

Riccardo BarbieriI'm looking around the internet to find out the title of an old book (maybe 10-12 years ago) I read as a kid. I roughly remember the main story and I think the title contains the word "Super" but I can't seem to find anything about it. The book is about the story of a group of teens/kids with sup...

Q: Sega Genesis game where you coached a monster that fought in tournament battles. After fights, you could blend your monster with the opponent

FuzzyBootsOne of my friends rented this, probably in later elementary school to early high school (late 1980s to mid 1990s). There was a tournament with monsters fighting. I don't remember if it was brackets or a ladder tournament. The graphics were 2D. The monsters, as I recall it, were largely quadrupeda...

Q: What unit of measurement are they using for altitude?

AlexRight in the beginning of Episode 1 of Lost in Space (2018), the ship is knocked off course and rapidly loses altitude. The computer voice announces the decreasing altitude as "4,000 feet", then "3,000 feet", and then 2,000 feet. However, the display console is shown when they hit 3,000 feet, and...

Q: What would actually happen to a locomotive on ice like in The Polar Express?

bigyihsuanIn the Polar Express film, there is a scene where the Polar Express runs off the tracks onto a frozen-over lake, which supports it and doesn't collapse even after the locomotive tilting and hitting the ice with force twice. (This is disregarding the crack from the pin.) This Reddit post calculate...

@Riker Yep, sorry, I don't have any thoughts on the show except "no thanks". I'm catching vague bits of news about it, and dreading the time that anyone can become "WoT fans" (or at least followers of a different version of WoT) simply by turning on the TV.
@JohnRennie Elizabeth Kay's Divide series has dragons used as aeroplanes, but they're not at all a major part of the story, literally just appearing when characters need to take a flight from one place to another. (I remember some nice illustrations, but couldn't track them down online.)

@Randal'Thor Thanks :-)

@Randal'Thor yeah, the current approach seems relatively fast 'n' loose with canon :p it's not bad but it's definitely not the og

Q: Short story about a voyage to harvest tissue from a dead angel

Joe NoirI am trying to recall the name of a short story collection on audio. The last story in the collection involved a sea voyage to a distant land - there was a giant dead angel and tissue growths from the inside were prized.

15:14
@JohnRennie Following up on this; I presume then that you want the dragon(s) to have a fairly large role in the story, not just supporting character(s)?
It's been a long time, but ISTR liking Hambly's Dragonsbane but IIRC the dragon only really showed up at the end.

Q: How many Marvel One-Shots are there, where were they released, and where can they be found?

Peter NielsenSince the (relatively) recent addition to Disney+ of All Hail the King, a Marvel "One-Shot", I've been wondering: how many Marvel One-Shots are there? Where were they originally released? Are they still available or have they become ghosts of the past? I'm looking for: A complete list of the One...

Q: Was anything ever said about Muggles being able to see or enter Hogwarts in the films?

ibidThe trailer for Fantastic Beasts 3 shows Jacob Kowalski (a Muggle) inside the Hogwarts Great Hall. I am familiar with the book-canon about Muggles and Hogwarts, and there already are other questions about that. (Tl;dr They see a ruined shack according to Hermione in book four, but Myrtle's paren...

@DavidW We agreed at the last meeting that it would be nice to discuss a dragon book next, and I rashly said there were loads of good dragon books that aren't just vaguely YA stories of waif finds dragon egg, bonds with hatchling, waif and dragon save world.
"Rashly" because I'm now struggling to find anything along the lines I had in mind.
Something written from the point of view of the dragon would be good.

Q: How much say do the actors of the Doctor have in how (s)he is portrayed?

How much saying does the actor have on the character of the new incarnation? E.g., do they get the scripts and have to play out ...

Q: Need help with a movie name

KirboI need help remembering the name of a movie that I want to say showed up on the sci fi(syfy) channel ages ago. I don't remember much other than it had scientists running across some kind of desert being chased by a silver tripod that was smaller than the war of the worlds tripod. I vaguely rememb...

If you don't mind short stories, "The George Business" (Zelazny) is one of my favourites. :)

For "from the point of view of the dragin", Tooth and Claw (Jo Walton) and Mating Flight/World In My Claws (Bard Bloom) are the two that come immediately to mind; I feel like I've read other stuff in that vein in the last five years but I can't quite put my finger on it
(possibly I'm thinking of Martha Wells's Books of the Raksura; the titular Raksura can shapeshift between a mostly human-passing bipedal form and a larger one that resembles a dragon)
For "dragon or dragons as major characters or elements of the plot", off the top of my head I can think of Phoenix Extravagant by Yoon Ha Lee (mechanical dragon given life by magic), the Lady Trent series by Marie Brennan (the titular lady explores the world to compile the definitive text on dragon behaviour and biology), Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon (napoleonic war with dragons -- I didn't like it, but it's worth mentioning in case you might)
Also Heartstrikers by Rachel Aaron (post-masquerade urban fantasy where dragons wield significant political power), Genevieve Cogman's Invisible Library series (the multiverse is in a cold war between physics dragons and story elves with an extradimensional library caught in the middle -- that one has a less of a focus on dragons as dragons, you could probably replace the dragons with Different Elves without noticeably affecting the plot)
16:43
@Randal'Thor that seems a smidge exclusionary
Well, at least he's not insisting that people have to read it in the original Klingon.
@DavidW I mean if you don't, are you a true fan?
@AncientSwordRage See, it's not being elitist; if it's acceptable to read them in English first you won't be a true fan™ right away, but it allows a path to reach true fan™ status.

Q: A "Thousand and one nights" semi-short fantasy about a door to the past or the future

AlfredI read this novelette or shortish novella about 10 years ago, maybe less. It is in a strong "Thousand and One Nights" atmosphere. It is about a magician (probably in Baghdad at the time of Harun Al Rashid) who knows how to make "time" doors : stepping one way takes one to the future, the other wa...

Q: Story about a house with a supernatural door

TronmanI read this story online, sometime between 2009 and 2012. The story was told as a series of blog posts, emails and text messages between two individuals, the narrator, and their friend, who had recently purchased a house. It's also possible the narrator was the purchaser, corresponding with someo...

I often wonder what went on in all those dead chat rooms.
It's like one of those old cottage motels, except that all but two of the cottages are rotted and falling down, and you don't really want to know what's going on in the other one.
