Q: Opt out of getting notfications about non-suggested edits to some or all community wiki answers

StormblessedI recently posted this answer. It is a community wiki looking to identify 378 characters. In less than 48 hours, it has been edited 55 times. That translates to over 50 notifications sent to me about teensy edits to one big thing that I don't have much investment in. Another similar answer I po...

Damn, numbering the mutants in base 16 needs three digits after a 255...
Ok, base 20 is the most efficent
@OrangeDog currently working on that, using base 20 numbers so as not to have more than 3 digits per character XD — Stormblessed 2 mins ago

@Stormblessed You're not thinking of changing the grid are you? I'd vote against that; it messes up all work done to date.

2:17 AM
@DavidW well if you think about it
Every 4 squares could be compressed into one square
Wouldn’t mess it up too much

You're going to go through an manually merge squares between columns?
Not to mention it messes up the vertical divisions on 9 columns.

9:08 AM
@DavidW The original grid is so ... ahem ... in this special case I'd say we should change it, beacuse the non-alphabetic greek letters bother me as well. And if you say we have to do redo a lot of work, well, we have to anyway, because the post has numbers for all squares, and we have to figure out which of those have a mutant that is still to be identified.
I'd do numbers horizontally and letters vertically, since the image is so wide, but Stormblessed's way works too, and whoever does the work can make the calls.
Let me see how that question stands now.
Also, it would definitely be worth to slice the image and put the slices into the answer, like I did in the Flash image. More important even than getting a big image with numbers.
Hmm, there aren't too many answers yet.

9:22 AM
@b_jonas about 65 IIRC. Put in 50 of them myself, if my calculations aren't wrong :)

In any case, we have to rearrange the answer anyway, to be able to tell which mutants we're missing.

SQB
Perhaps the best solution is to number each of them individually.
Which would be a hell of a job, and not one I would be willing to do. But the grids seem sub-optimal too.

@SQB Yes, it's probably worth. I did the grid only twice, when it wasn't clear how many objects we even have that are identifiable:
But here, the individuals seem pretty easy to separate.
And you can do them piecewise, splitting the image. I may try, if I have time and nobody else does it.

SQB
Yes, when it's not clear what's identifiable at all, a grid is better.

Q: Who are these Multiverse Flashes?

JenayahThe Flash #52 (2018) opens with the panel below (minor spoilers for the Flash War arc). This "council of Flashes" seems to feature the Flashes of different universes. And a different angle right after, revealing even more Flashes. Who are all these Flashes?

9:28 AM
Might be worth creating a macro in Gimp or a similar editor, to drop a new number every time you click on the image.

^ This is the one where I can't tell how many items and characters there are, so I used a grid. Someone else tried to number it first.
Well no, not number, but do it without a grid.

Q: How to quickly insert sequential numbers?

Daniel R. CollinsWorking in Gimp, I frequently need to label different parts of a diagram with sequential numbers (say, 1 to 30 or so). Is there any tool in Gimp which can make this more efficient (ideally 1-click on each spot with a number)? Alternatively, is there any other software that can streamline this?

Currently at work, though. No time to insert (checks question) 378 numbers.

SQB
9:52 AM
I couldn't resist and tested the Gimp plug-in. That seems to work fine.
It does create a new layer for each number, though, so I wonder how it will work on 378 points.

Can you start it part way through?
Like start at 10 instead of 1
So you could create up to N, run the script, merge/flatten the layers and then start again at N + 1

SQB
Yeah, that would work.
Seems to work, except that it now shows the path I used to create it as well. I know next to nothing about Gimp, to be honest.
But I got it working pretty quickly.

I've only used Gimp for very basic things every now and then

SQB
10:25 AM
Same for me.
Nevermind, the path isn't saved to file.
Works pretty well, actually.
Might do it on a break.

@SQB I wouldn't number them sequentially though, more likely with letter-number combinations. If you number them sequentially, then it gets ugly when you have to go back because you missed one. If you leave slack it's easier.

SQB
I don't have any options to do so, though.

I find it quite trivial to insert text with the text tool though, so I don't need any extra tool for this. You just click then type the label, and that's it.

SQB
Yeah, but 378 times. Keeping track of the numbering.

Oh yeah, we should link

Q: Who are the 378 mutants in this image?

Jack B NimbleRecently a new series of covers revealed the picture of "every" mutant. I am attempting to build a comprehensive list of these mutants, who could potentially be a threat to homo-sapiens. @SQB Like I said, I wouldn't use sequential numbers. That's a recipe for disaster, like alphabetizing a CD rack with individual shelves and no gaps.
@SQB Is there some other image editor that you know better? I don't think gimp is a requirement here.

SQB
10:40 AM
I may be able to adjust the script.

@TheLethalCarrot Jenayah identified almost all of those, so that one is fine. I only did editing, no identification.
@SQB They're text layers, not even converted to (tiny size) pixel layers. In fact merging them would turn them to a large pixel layer so it would be worse.

SQB
Dammit. After 293 layers, it started over at 1.
Also, I now have 293 + 93 = 386 numbers.
Was my mistake, had disconnected the path somewhere.
Hm. Could it be 387 instead of 378?
Because I just found one I missed.

SQB
11:21 AM
Did I miss anyone? :)

@b_jonas Ooh, yes. I wanted to suggest changing it just to fix up the god-awful ordering of those Greek letters, but felt bad about doing so because I'm not actually involved in any of the work there.

@SQB Will you also slice the image up for the answer?
Let me see.

SQB
I have the .xcf for anyone interested to do more work on it.

@SQB Shouldn't you make the numbers bold and bright green, to make them easier to find?
@SQB big face between 2, 13, 14

SQB
@b_jonas 1

11:29 AM
Ah, that's number 1
I just didn't see the number 1 on his forehead.
There are some places in this image where I can't tell if something is a separate tiny person in the back or a detail of an existing person, so this will be hard to check.

SQB
Yeah, it isn't optimal either.

@SQB There's a person in a black mask between 44 and 36

SQB
Dammit, you're correct.
And the 40 is unreadable.

I'd recommend going more or less by a grid, even if you type out every number individually. That way it's quicker to find a person by number. Although if you slice the image up so you can find the slice image above each number, then that might not be necessary.
And I still say bright green bold
84 is hard to read as well
59 hard to raed

SQB

11:37 AM
@SQB Ok, now the numbers have what look like too much JPEG compression.
But I guess you won't have that in the slices.

SQB
@b_jonas ...slices?

Can you reexport that with 444 (no chroma subsampling)?
It currently has chroma subsampling both ways, which makes the numbers really hard to read.

SQB
Already at 4:4:4

And preferably as good compression as you can fit to the imgur size limit, whatever that is today.
@SQB Then imgur recompressed it because it went over the limit
Get it under the size limit so that imgur doesn't recompress it.
May be impossible, in which case upload halves or quarters as separate images.

SQB
Looks like it. What is the limit?

11:41 AM
We'll have to do that anyway, in even smaller slices, to make the answer more readable.
@SQB Dunno, one of the metas say.
Probably 2 MB or 1 MB.

SQB
> Non-animated images over 1MB for anonymous uploads and 5MB for account holders will be lossily compressed.
Dammit, can't get it to work and I'm past my break.
Size on my side is about 3MB.

@SQB: save a png with just the labels on transparent background, I'll put it over the image on this side.
Or slice it up.

SQB
Better?

@SQB No, that's still chroma subsampled.
Well, it is a bit better admittedly.
Number 9 is hard to read now.
Number 5 too. Admittedly I told you to make them green.
Let me look for missing numbers.
@SQB I think two people are missing numbers next to 167
@SQB And there's a face between 130 and 162
Is the label 152 supposed to be for the lady below it? because it's quite far from her face.
@SQB The large person with the mane and fur neck between 142, 145, 155 has no number.
@SQB 153 and 137 are on the same person as far as I can tell.
@SQB Small person between 223, 241, 220 has no number.
@SQB Guy with red cloak between 346, 347, 350 has no number.

SQB
12:13 PM
@b_jonas I was in doubt, but I figured those triplets could be 166 together.
@b_jonas Yeah, missed that.
@b_jonas no, seems I numbered 152/178 twice.
@b_jonas Dang. Missed that one too.

166 are the Cuckoo Sisters, yes

I might try to redo this myself, numbering them in slices from left to right. Then I can do them online, merging the answers for the left part when I'm done with that image.

SQB
@b_jonas 153 and 177, yes.

Hive mind, so they can be considered one, methinks

SQB
@b_jonas missed as well.

12:17 PM
If I slice them properly, I can put most of the numbers above or below.

SQB
@b_jonas Indeed.

As in for the Flashes.

SQB
Slices can be found here: comicbook.com/marvel/2019/08/26/…
Gives you 6 slices of about 60-70 characters each.
Might be best as 6 separate cw answers, then.

@SQB Too big slices.
Slices should be around 620 px wide so they can easily show up inline in an SE answer without scaling,
and not too high either, so there's not too much text below each.

SQB
I'll leave that up to you.

12:20 PM
@SQB Sure, I'm just saying we might be duplicating work.
But you're ahead right now.

SQB
@b_jonas Nah, I deleted my cw answer.

@SQB Even if you deleted it, you're ahead.
You still have the files.

SQB
But not willing to pursue it any further.
I must say, that script to generate the numbers, it works like a charm.

@SQB And I say, generating the numbers isn't the hard part.

SQB
Being able to just click "I want a number here" and not caring what number, just the next one in the sequence, while being able to control that sequence by editing the path it takes, is a huge time saver, though.

2:56 PM
@SQB why'd you delete your answer?
Going to edit the previous answer to have the new numbering system instead?
@WebHead No, recreate your account instead. Sure, especially if you make your list with helpful SE-style formatting.

SQB
@Randal'Thor because the numbering was still off — @b_jonas found 5 or 6 unnumbered characters on there.
And I was already past my break and had no inclination to fix it.

If someone would edit the first answer to use the new numbered image (and edit the already-done correspondences accordingly), that'd be great.
Maybe better than having two competing answers on this type of question.

3:12 PM
#nocontext?

@Randal'Thor Instead of a single big numbered image, I'd ideally try to slice the image to smaller parts and number the characters on each individually, like in scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/195303/…
That way the text parts of the answer can be close to the numbered image, and also I can edit them into the answer incrementally from left to right

Well, if you can find a neat way to slice it ...

But this is a lot of work, and I have real world stuff to do too, so if other people fix the answer before, then I won't.

@Randal'Thor Oh it's just Inspiro Bot, random "inspirational" quotes... found it funny

@Randal'Thor I'm not a professional, but I know how to use scissors and an x-acto knife, so I'll find a way.

3:15 PM
@TheLethalCarrot Oh. I wondered if it might have been a subtle comment on current British politics.

Well it was quite relevant I suppose

@SQB wait how does that work?
Us Americans think we’re the best democracy, when we’re very much not, but at least we don’t have the House of freaking Lords

@Stormblessed They're not involved in this fiasco. The Eton lads have managed to make a supreme mess of this without the help of the lords larda**.

@SQB Do you have a stable numbering now? If so, then I might add those numbers to my slices.

@Stormblessed It works by a prime minister (elected by a tiny electorate of about 100,000 party members, and having faced essentially no public scrutiny by his peers in parliament) who's so intent on pushing his specific Brexit agenda (for which there is no clear mandate) that he's willing to sacrifice the constitutional parliamentary democracy in order to force it through against the will of parliament.
3
Or, as the government is repeatedly telling everyone, it's just business as usual.

3:21 PM
So that we don't have three incompatible numbering schemes.
Drat, this image is huge, I don't think I'll have patience to do all of it.

@b_jonas That's why we have CW ;-)

@DavidW oh just an unrelated complaint about Britain’s system
Like we don’t have this kind of crap
But I mean here, until this year we have had much more insane leaders than Britain
