@b_jonas Thanks for the response. You say that you don't like eastern european scifi in general. Can you tell me what it is about it that you don't like? I'm so glad to run into someone knowledgeable of the area with an opinion on its scifi.
(me, I've lived in and around China for almost 30 years now, since I was 20, but although the rest of my life happens in either Cantonese or Mandarin I've never enjoyed Chinese scifi - I've found what I've looked at to be either derivative, overly nationalistic, or too heavily reliant on Chinese mythology for my taste.)
@Jenayah pretty sure French vowels would make Cantonese pronunciation easier for you :-)

Q: Should I shave my head bald?

Clarke BarrettA few days ago, my cousin came to visit me and she dared me to play a game and whoever win would shave the loser’s head completely bald. Memor-Xin The Avengers Fury explains that the reason why S.H.I.E.L.D was making weapons with the Tesseract was because of Thor's fight with The Destroyer and the sudden realization that there was aliens and that Earth was hopelessly outmatched Bruce: I'd like to know why SHIELD is using the Tesserac...

@Adamant Oh, I totally agree! The US is one of worst when it comes to my-nation-centric scifi. I actually don't mind that Chinese scifi is nationalistic either - I enjoy it from other countries. It's just, I live here, and am bombarded with the local version of ethnonationalism daily already, so for me it's not an interesting new viewpoint, it's more of the same and predictable to boot. I have nothing against it per se....it's just not the escape I'm looking for into a different world.

Ah, and among the persons I missed yesterday, @NapoleonWilson is German (and has very good taste in movies :P ); and while he is allergic to books, @AnkitSharma might be able to recommend Indian movies/shows/comics

Q: Synthesizing mirror life as one of hypothetical explanations of Fermi paradox?

Jarek DudaThere is a possibility of synthesizing mirror version of our life (Wikipedia, considered e.g. in Arthur C. Barafu AlbinoThere is a vague idea of a setting in my head, and I can not even remember whether I read a story with it, or was it a part of a game. In Harry Potter, do we have a question about how the Dark Lord's chosen name is pronounced? Apparently there's a JKR interview answer on this, but all I can find on SFF is scifi.stackexchange.com/q/114325/4918 "Which names (besides for Voldemort) do the movies pronounce wrong?" and scifi.stackexchange.com/q/112401/4918 "What is the correct pronunciation of Hermione?"

@MikeC I'm not sure really. It just that I read a lot of Asimov and nothing else stands up to that.
@MikeC With the three Strugackij books I've read, I think my problem is that the novels aren't going anywhere. They start with some fantastical concept and explore what would happen if such technology existed, which is a good way to write a sci-fi novel, but then there's no proper ending. Some of the other sci-fi books I've read feel that way too.
@Adamant Jenkins has minor complaints about those in asimovreviews.net/Stories/Story015.html and asimovreviews.net/Books/Book003.html . In the first case it's easy to ignore; in the second case the whole novel is terrible.
@MikeC I think the books I read, like Asimov and Verne, just feel more like classical adventure books. They let me escape the real world.
