He almost gets executed by King Arthur, but he performs a magic to block the sun and gets out, which even the fireball-hurling Merlin finds amazing. He also perfor...

Q: Why do wizards use such ineffective spells during serious situations in Harry Potter?

Filip KočicaIn Harry Potter, we can see many wizards in many really important situations/fights using very ineffective spells, and so later on they pay the price for that (e.g. somebody uses expelliarmus, but later on he loses to somebody else or even gets killed by the same person he could have killed first...

Interesting story-id question over there by Tamfang: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/…
“Name the story, maybe by Vernor Vinge. Post-apocalyptic. The tribe uses sacred sentences as currency: I can pay you by teaching you one of them, and I thereafter must not spend it again. […] The protagonist is banished for collecting these sentences by eavesdropping. He suspects that the sacred sentences are fragments of the instruction manual for an Ancient machine hidden nearby.”

To save time I tagged an edit ‘dinos’
But it doesn’t show questions about dinosaurs when I click on it?? Is it not a synonym?
Why are synonyms so hard to make?
Anyone have [dinosaurs] rep? Please suggest and vote for [dinos] as a synonym for it

3:49 PM
@CorvoAttano dinos is only used once, just replace it with dinosaurs
No need for a synonym
Here done

@Jenayah Seems like something that should have a synonym because it's faster to type.
@Jenayah You have edit access??
That's cool

@CorvoAttano that's not what synonyms are for actually
Besides if you type dinos it suggests dinosaurs
@CorvoAttano you can edit immediately once you reach 2k
Except for tag wikis, that's 20 or 25k

Dang it
I almost had a great question

What was it about?

@Jenayah Stormlight Archive
It hinged on Kharbranth appearing to be part of the Frostlands, when, in fact, it is a city-state (kinda explains the whole King Taravangian existing thing)

4:00 PM
Ah... Never read those

The map in the UK two-volume edition (and probably in the normal one) had it marked exactly like the other cities, not showing its independence
@Jenayah They're great, if you have a lot of time to read them (the first one, The Way of Kings, is 1200 pages with the part where the plot finally advances in the last 200)

By the way @CorvoAttano I think you said you were doing edits partly for rep and badges; if so you might want not only to edit stuff that's already on the homepage but also "old" stuff. I'm mainly thinking about old story-id questions with unhelpful titles like "Please help me find this SF short story I read when I was younger" (along with a body edit of course). This has three advantages:
1. it cleans up stuff that needs cleaning
2. it bumps them so if they're not answered they might eventually be, as they get fresh attention from beingon the homepage
Stuff like this, for instance:

Q: I've been looking for this book for years, but I can't remember the title of it, and I only read the first chapter

cinnamoncat23Since I haven't found it for years, it's clear I'm not able to describe it as vividly as I could before. I only know a couple things about this book, which is most likely my problem. ^ needs an actual title, a media tag etc
If you're willing to that is! No obligation of any kind :)
And who knows you might even be able to answer a couple along the way
------------------ (wild separator of unrelated discussion appears) -----------------------
@Jenayah-As far as proof goes, I do not mind if someone states that they've read all the comics featuring Toad up to that point and he didn't use the ability, but only if they have some kind of way to back the claim. I'm also willing to accept answers based on interviews or comments from someone involved (maybe Ray Park or Bryan Singer, or one of the producers mentioned it during production?) — Gothamite24 2 days ago
^ @RDFozz you seem to have read pretty much everything that's ever been published so maybe you have a shot at this :P

7:05 PM
@Jenayah If only I trusted my memory a bit more. I can't back it up via my digital comics collection because Marvel hasn't released the X-Men Forever miniseries with Toad's change of appearance and powers - and trying to locate the physical issues is simply more work than I'm willing to put in. I'll at least drop in a comment, though.

@RDFozz He doesn't have spit in those, IIRC
just long tongue and maybe whoever was pulling the strings fixed his back or something

@Jenayah I believe it would document the power change. To the best of my recall, all he had before that was jumping, a toadying personality, and access to some tech the Stranger left behind.

There was some slime in X-Force
But... maybe we shouldn't think too much about 90s X-Force :P
there was slime/glue in the (original, not Evolution) animated series as well

@Jenayah That I can check. Painful though it may be. (Rob Liefeld, who gave a whole new meaning to having flat feet).

X-Force #7 he slimes Syrin

7:15 PM
@Jenayah Also, clearly Gothamite24 has read (and remembers) Toad stories that I either missed, or have forgotten - I haven't read everything, and there's plenty I've only read once, years ago.

I can't possibly imagine why someone would read a Rob Liefeld (especially one featuring Toad) issue only once and then forget about it 🤔
