@SirArthur7 in principle i would not mind cleaning this up (the question is way too long-winded) and expanding the accepted answer to form a complete answer. but it is too much work right now... maybe i will do it another time...
actually the accepted answer is not quite right either... the question is asking about heats of combustion, the answer is talking about heats of formation..
argh
there are probably like 1000 questions on hess's law on the site and probably 600 of them are asking the same thing but in different ways
i don't think losing one of them will hurt very much
so maybe is ok to delete that
