Q: Upgraded office to Logitech K235 kbd/mice. How can I help my users who are complaining that there is no caps lock light?

SDsolarThe question is in the title. I just upgraded an office from older keyboards which were starting to fail from overuse. The new K235 units have a nice feel and am hearing no complaints about the decision to go with this less-expensive model. But I am getting some grumbling from some people ...

"They don't appreciate my telling them that I merely removed that keycap from mine" - I wouldn't appreciate it either, thats like the doctor telling you not to move your arm, if you tell them your arm hurts when you move it.
I don’t get it. When you type stuff, you’d usually look at the screen. That means you’ll catch on after the very first letter.
"When you type stuff" - You're assuming the user is touch typing @DanielB. In this case that appears to be a false assumption, which is why my answer recommends that users learn to touch type.
@allquixotic Well of course. :D It’s explicitly mentioned in the question that some “touch-typists” accidentally toggle caps lock.
@DanielB - A good majority of people look at their keyboard to type instead of looking at the screen. Your skill as a typest depends on what you will do (search and type) or (mindless type away)

They are looking at a document from which they are typing. So they can get through whole paragraphs before they look up. Of course, the people who transcribe from audio certainly notice right away.
If you are running Linux/Xwindows, you can completely disable the CapsLock key (or others such as NumLock), or remap their function to something useful. Don't know if it's possible in other systems, though.
... what about writing in password fields? Or are you using a case-insensitive login system like facebook?
To be fair, that does sound incredibly irritating. Did you not buy one and try it out before replacing the entire office stock? And how cheap are these keyboards that they don't even have a Caps Lock LED?!
@LightnessRacesinOrbit: With logitech removing essential features it is often not about being cheap, but "because we can" or "because to have that feature you should buy a ridiculously upmarked model". for example the last logitech model produced for the sequence "shiftdown, )down, ;down, allthreeup" only the ) and not the ); like any other keyboard. logitechs answer as "buy the gaming keyboard if you want more than two simultaneous keypresses"
@SDsolar: If they are looking at the document while typing and nowhere else, how would they notice even with a caps lock light, given that they would not look at that either?
@PlasmaHH I'm not much of a typist, so when copy typing I tend to flick my eyes between the document and the keyboard with the screen in a distant third place. A good touch-typist wouldn't need to look at the keyboard at all, so could spare a more frequent glance at the screen, except it would slow them down.

@ChrisH: exactly my point, so why would an LED on the keyboard make them more aware of that they are having caps lock on when they don't look at it?
An LED on the keyboard would help those who glance at the keyboard at all. If they really don't take their eyes off the document of course it wouldn't help. But they notice the difference (maybe the unfmailiar keyboard makes it easier to miss-hit CapsLock).
@PlasmaHH: It's a light. You can see it from the corner of your eye or with a very quick glance. I have a habit of doing so that has been cultivated over several decades
Are they also using software that does not have the ability to swap the case of words enmass like Word? support.office.com/en-us/article/…
Ignore them. Many more keyboards over the last 15 years have shipped without the lights than with, and people have adjusted. This will blow over.

@Ramhound It's more like the doctor's telling you to quit hitting your elbow with a hammer.
Map their caps lock keys to something useful like control, and send them on a Vim course. They'll be thanking you when they get over the learning curve (if you're still working there in 2019)
@chrylis I disagree the author's claimed response and the reaction they received is to be expected since their statement about removing the key is sarcasm
